Chapter 18
“Um Keith, can I talk to you?” Mary asked her boyfriend after she managed to clean herself up. Keith looked up from his daughter, who had somehow managed talking him into playing Barbies, at his girlfriend. The first thing he noticed was the small white stick in her hand; the second, her red, puffy eyes.
“Daddy will be right back.” He whispered to his daughter as he kissed her head and got up to see what Mary wanted to say to him.
“What are the results?” He asked as soon as they were in a room to themselves with no prying eyes or ears to interrupt them.
“I don’t get it, I had all the symptoms.” Mary muttered, tears starting to roll down her pale face once more.
“Mary, what did the test say?” Keith demanded, though he had a sickening feeling that he knew the answer due to the amount of tears on his love’s face.
“Negative.” She barely managed to say before she broke down crying into his arms. Not knowing what to say or do, Keith did the only thing that is like a sixth sense when it comes to crying women; he held her for all he was worth and let her cry.
Keith wouldn’t deny that he was disappointed in the results. He wanted a child so badly and he figured that this possible surprise pregnancy would be his way to make up for not being there during the time Mary was pregnant with Collie. Keith, as well as Mary, had the big family white picket fence dream.
“I’m sorry Mary, I knew how much you wanted this child.” At that comment, Mary couldn’t help but let a small smile form on her face. Keith noticed it and asked,
“What?”
“Look at us; we’re acting like some married couple who’s been trying to have a baby.” She explained.
“Yeah, I guess we are.” Keith mused, kissing her forehead.
“I guess it just wasn’t the right time love.” Keith stated after a few moments.
“I guess not.” Mary said. Keith felt awful hearing how deflated she sounded. He knew this was a blow to her happiness.
“Maybe it’s God’s way of telling us that we should get married before we try having any more kids.” He offered, trying to lift her spirit.
“Yeah, I guess. C’mon, let’s go play with Collie. I feel awful that I haven’t spent much time of the little time that I have with her.” Mary stated, pulling away from Keith to go meet her child in the living room. Keith sat for a second, bewildered by the quick rebound rate that he forgot Mary had. She would cry for a few minutes, let her anger or sadness out, and then go back to her life as if nothing had happened. It was one of the many things that he loved about her.
Later that night, just as Keith was about to go to bed, the shrill of his cell phone kept him from doing so.
“For Christ’s sake Colm, what do you want?” He growled angrily after he checked the collar ID.
“ARE YOU MAD!?! I JUST GOT OFF A THREE HOUR PHONE CALL WITH YOUR SISTER WHO WAS BAWLING HER EYES OUT BECAUSE YOU DECIDED TO SEPARATE YOURSELF FROM THE FAMILY FOR SOME GIRL! AND THAT THAT GIRL WAS MARY!!!!!” Colm angrily shouted. Holding the phone away from his ear so he wouldn’t have his hearing blown out, Keith quickly said,
“Now you wait just one moment, I did not separate myself from my family. THEY left ME.” Keith said angrily.
“Well, that’s not what Rebecca said. And frankly, I believe her more than you since apparently you have been lying to us this whole time.” Colm said, toning his voice down just a bit, but not much.
“Colm, I am telling the truth. And the only reason I didn’t tell anyone about Mary was because she asked me not to in fear that she would lose her job.” Keith reasoned, trying to appease the clearly upset singer.
“You’re gonna be kicked off of the tour when Sharon finds out.” Colm stated.
“So what? I have my solo gig and I love Mary more than I could ever love singing and performing. Same goes for…” But Keith trailed off. He didn’t want to admit to Colm that he was also the father of Mary’s daughter if the singer didn’t know that yet.
“Same goes for? OH MY GOD! YOU ARE FRICKIN’ STUPID! YOU’RE THE ONE WHO GOT HER PREGNANT AREN’T YOU?” Colm’s voice picked right up.
“Will you keep it down? Yes, Collie is my daughter! Are you happy? You discovered the infamous love secret of Keith Harkin.”
“You’re deep sh*t. I hope you know that.” Colm stated.
“No I’m not as long as you don’t tell Sharon. Mary and I are going to do that when we are ready and now we are not ready.” Keith pleaded.
“Sorry man, but I don’t think I can keep a secret like this. Not from the other lads and especially not from Sharon. She would kill me if she found out I knew and didn’t tell her.” Colm said. Colm hung up before Keith had the chance to explain that some of the other lads did know what was going on between Mary and Keith.
“He’s going to tell her isn’t he?” Mary asked from her spot on the bed. She had heard the whole conversation and it didn’t shock her that Colm would be the one to do something like this. She always got that bad vibe from him.
“I think he is.”
*just wanna say: i LOVE colm...but someone needs to be the bad guy and sadly, that role fell on him. and sorry for the bad word...kinda slipped in...please comment! thanks!*
