*loosely based off of Taylor Swifts song "Mary's Song (Oh My My My) Prologue “Did you even think about me before you agreed to this!?!” The sharp voice of young Mary O’Flaherty shouted. “Of course I thought about you! How couldn’t I? But, not everything is about you Mary! I have a dream to! And agreeing to be in the group is as close as I’m gonna get right now!” Her boyfriend, Keith Harkin, screamed back. The two were up in his room and Keith had just finished telling her that he had taken the job of being one of the lead singers in the new musical band Celtic Thunder. “You could have at least told me you were going to audition.” Mary muttered from her spot on Keith’s messy, unmade bed. Keith’s last outburst had put her in place and left her speechless. “Mary, darling, I didn’t even know I was going until me da’ practically threw me in the cab after telling me about it in a bar two hours after I landed.” “I think we should break up.” Mary said suddenly after a moment’s silence. Keith practically fell off the swivel chair he was sitting on. “What? Why?” He managed to get out, having one of those rare voice cracks, even though he was twenty-one and had fully matured vocal wise. Hearing Mary mention them breaking up shocked him: the two had been through so much and he had known her since she was consumed in the womb, for their parents were good friends. The two didn’t like each other much at first, but when he was eighteen and she was sixteen, he had started to see her from a different perspective. They have been going steady ever since. Until now. “Because I don’t want to be that girl who held you back. You’re right. You need to live your dream and your life. You don’t want a preg-a nineteen year old girl stopping you from doing that. You’ll be touring other counties, other countries. You’ll be in new places. You don’t want to have to come home to me all the time when you could meet some foreign girl. I’m not going to do that to you Keith. You are a free spirit and I won’t be the one to chain you up.” Mary explained. “But Mary, I DO want to come home to you after every tour. I love you.” Keith pleaded, on the verge of crying. Mary had tears in her eyes as well as she said, “I do to Keith. And if we are meant to be, then we will find each other again. But for now, I think that we should end it. I’m sorry.” Then, Mary got up and left before Keith could say something to make her stay. When she got back to her Dad’s house, which was about three houses down from Keith’s, she ran up to her room and pulled out the reason she had even went to Keith’s in the first place: a white stick with a little plus sign. Throwing it across the room in a fury, she started to pack up a suitcase so she could move to her mom’s house in County Sligo. * i know what you're thinking, not another one! haha but this story has been floating in my head for about a year now and i just gotta put it somewhere. Chapter 1 “Keith, feet off of the sound system! Emmet, wake up! Alright everyone, before we start to record, I have two pieces of information for you.” The sharp voice of Sharon Browne, the producer of Celtic Thunder, barked as she walked into the recording studio at nine o’clock one fine late July morning. After Keith Harkin took his feet off of the sound booth and Emmet somewhat pulled out of his sleepy state, Sharon continued talking. “The first bit is that starting next week I am holding auditions in Dublin to find a new female back-up singer since Laura will be unable to go on tour with us due to her new baby.” Sharon paused to see the lads’ reaction. “I’m gonna miss Laura, she was so easy to prank.” Keith said slyly with a smirk on his face. That smirk was quickly wiped off when he noticed the glare that Sharon was giving him. When the rest of the guys in the room stopped laughing at Keith, Sharon continued with, “I would also like to introduce the new singer that will be taking Daniel’s place. Colm, you can come in now.” At that point, a young man with a ball cap and wearing cargo shorts and a red sweatshirt walked in. “Lads, this is Colm Keegan, he will be joining us this tour. Colm, that is George Donaldson, Neil Byrne, Emmet Cahill, and Keith Harkin. The other man, Ryan Kelly, is not here at the moment for he is recovering from a very bad accident.” Sharon introduced. “Hey Colm, what’s a craicing?” Keith said as he held out his hand to the man standing in front of him. Colm shook it and replied with a “nothing” and then a laugh. As the guys got to know each other, Sharon took this opportunity to take a call. “Alright, Neil, you’re up first. Everyone else, go wait outside until it’s your turn.” Sharon demanded when she got back into the recording studio. Dutifully, the guys did as they were told and went out to the waiting room. “So, Colm, you got yourself a girl?” George asked as he noticed the Claddagh ring on Colm’s finger pointing in. Looking down at the ring himself, Colm blushed and said, “Yeah, I do. Her name’s Gwyn and we’ve been dating for about two years now. What about any of you guys? Any of you got girlfriends or wives?” “I’m married to a lovely lady named Carrie and we have a beautiful ten year old daughter named Sarah.” George said. “Very nice.” Colm stated with a nod of his head. “Neil’s dating the back-up singer Nicole and Ryan has a girlfriend as well. And that’s about it.” Emmet said when he noticed that Keith was staring at the ground coldly and wasn’t going to say anything any time soon. All the other men in the room noticed this as well and George was the one to pick up on it. “You okay Keith?” he questioned. “I need some air. Be back in a bit.” Was all Keith mumbled before he got up and practically ran out of the room. “I think he went through a bad break-up. He never usually talks about girls. Only the one night stands he has with them.” Emmet suggested. “Is that what his song Lauren and I is about? A break-up?” Colm questioned, having had listened to all of the band’s previous albums so he would have an idea of what he was getting into. “Maybe. But he never talks about that song, only performs it. And I don’t suggest asking him either. Paul, a former member, did once. Keith nearly killed him before running out of the bus. He didn’t show up until two minutes before the show that night.” George informed. Colm just nodded as the question lingered in everyone’s head: what was the song about and why doesn’t Keith ever talk about girls?

Chapter 2 It was the day of the auditions for the new back up vocal singer and Sharon had ruled just that morning that she wanted all of the lads present to judge since they would be working with the girl that was picked. The auditions went on for about five hours and not even half way through them, Keith and Emmet started to fall asleep, Neil started to play tic-tac toe and hangman on a scrap piece of paper that he could find with Neil and George was secretly texting his wife Carrie under the table. Some of the girls that audition were good but a majority of them were awful or they just weren’t the right fit for the group. “Okay lads, wake up, stop the games, and put the phone away. We’re taking a fifteen minute break.” Sharon stated as she shook both Keith and Emmet awake. “What? Is the torture over?” Keith quickly said as his mop of blond hair fell over his electrifying blue-green eyes. Sharon couldn’t help but chuckle as she reminded him that it was a break. “Of course. Put Keith through more torture. Sometimes I wish that I didn’t take this job like Mary wanted.” He mumbled as he took a sip of his water. What he had said went by Sharon’s ears, but it did not go by Colm’s. “Who’s Mary Keith? A long lost girlfriend?” For some reason, Colm had taken an interest in Keith’s love life, along with all the other lads. Keith’s eyes darkened. “She’s…she’s…” But his sentence was never finished before he just walked out on them. “Why does he always leave when someone mentions girls?” Colm questioned, still trying to get used to the lads and their quirks. “We’ve known him for quite some time now lad and we don’t even know what his deal is. All we know is talking about girlfriends is a tough topic for him so we usually just don’t bring it up.” George explained. “Yeah, the only one who can get away with talking about his girl is George and that’s just cause he’s a married man with a kid.” Neil added onto what George had said. “Oh…” was all Colm had to say. While all the other lads were talking and while Keith was in the bathroom locked in a stall trying to keep the tears from running down his cheeks at the thought of the only girl he has ever loved, one girl stumbled through the doors to the auditorium stumbling over her guitar case as she tripped over her six inch heel. “Hi, I’m here to audition.” She gasped as she gave the brown haired lady at the sign up station her name and age. “Okay, that’s great. You’re number 3737 and as of now you will be the last one to perform. Good luck!” Nicole Hudson said with a smile as she handed the girl her number. “Thank you!” was the reply. Forty singers and three hours later, the guys were right back where they were before they took the break. “Will you please just pay attention to the last singer? Please?” Sharon pleaded as she herself struggled to keep her from banging her head on the table. Auditions were not going the way she had hoped and she was starting to think that maybe she should just not find a replacement for Laura. “Hi, my name is…” “Forget the name. If you’re good enough we’ll get to that later. Please just sing before I loose these guys all together.” Sharon said as a normal sized girl with beautiful blond hair and bright blue eyes who was wearing a white sundress and cowgirl boots. “Okay, um I’m singing an original song that I wrote called Mary’s Song.” And then, after a few strums of her beautiful personalized acoustic guitar, the words flowed out of her mouth, fully waking each member of Celtic Thunder full wake up at her unique, pretty, simple, and perfect voice.
She said, I was seven and you were nine I looked at you like the stars that shined In the sky, the pretty lights And our daddies used to joke about the two of us Growing up and falling in love and our mamas smiled And rolled their eyes and said oh my my my Took me back to the house in the backyard tree Said you'd beat me up, you were bigger than me You never did, you never did Took me back when our world was one block wide I dared you to kiss me and ran when you tried Just two kids, you and I... Oh my my my my I was sixteen when suddenly I wasn't that little girl you used to see But your eyes still shined like pretty lights And our daddies used to joke about the two of us They never believed we'd really fall in love And our mamas smiled and rolled their eyes And said oh my my my... Took me back to the creek beds we turned up Two A.M. riding in your truck and all I need is you next to me Took me back to the time we had our very first fight The slamming of doors instead of kissing goodnight You stayed outside til the morning light Oh my my my my A few years had gone and come around We were sitting at our favorite spot in town And you looked at me, got down on one knee Took me back to the time we walked down the aisle Our whole town came and our mamas cried You said I do and I did too Took me home were we met so many years before We'll rock our babies on that very front porch After all this time, you and I I'll be eighty-seven; you'll be eighty-nine I'll still look at you like the stars that shine In the sky, oh my my my...
The auditorium was filled with the sound of clapping. “Sweetie, you were amazing. Now, will you please tell me your name?” “Thank you. That means a lot. And my name is Molly O’Flaherty.”

Chapter 3 “Well, if you just wait for a moment, I need to talk with these guys and then we’ll let you know.” Sharon said as she stood up from her seat. “Sure of course.” Mary said as she rocked from heel to heel. Sharon, followed by the rest of the lads, left the room to discuss the last performer of the day. “I say we take her.” Neil said almost immediately. Everyone nodded in agreement as each member voiced their opinions on how they should let her join the band. Only one member remained silent. “Keith, you’re awfully quiet over there. What do you think of Mary?” Sharon prodded as she noticed the young man with his head down and playing with his hands, a quirk she noticed he did when he was nervous or scared. “Take her. She deserves it.” Was all me managed to come out of his mouth as he slowly got over the initial shock of seeing his love again, staring at him with the eyes that made him putty in her hands, singing the song they wrote together, speaking of the future they had dreamed up together, and playing the guitar he had given to he had bought and personalized just for her. “Something wrong lad?” George questioned, the fatherly side in him taking over. “No, I…just let her join.” And with that, he quickly left the room again, something that had become a frequent escape for him during the past week. “He knows her.” Emmet said softly. All eyes turned to him. “What? How do you know that?” Sharon inquired, baffled by Keith’s actions. “Well, I think he does. I mean, look at the effect she had on him and him her. She practically sang that song to Keith when she auditioned, her name is Mary and he was muttering something about a girl named Mary, and I don’t get the feeling that Keith would just randomly say she deserves it if there wasn’t some personal reason behind it.” Emmet explained his reasoning. “Then maybe I shouldn’t accept her. I can’t have a riff between my performers and band members.” Sharon muttered. “Sharon, she was amazing and is the perfect fit! You would have to be delusional to not pick her! Keith is just gonna have to get over his issues, if he has any, with her. You have to pick Mary!” Colm exclaimed, still in shock over the girl’s performance and her beauty. “I’m not sure…” Sharon trailed off. Meanwhile, in the auditorium, a lonely Mary O’Flaherty sat on the stage strumming a few chords on her guitar, relishing in the fact she just saw her lover again for the first time in five years. He looked just the same, the only difference was that the shine in his eyes were gone and the permanent laughter that was also etched into his face was missing as well. Though, the resemblance between him and Collie was definitely there, no mistaking that. Lost in her thoughts, Mary did not notice that she was no longer the only one in the auditorium. It was the sharp, but sorrow filled voice that made the unknown presence known. “Why are you here?” Looking up, Mary could make out the figure of Keith R. Harkin in the back of the theater. “I wanted to see you.” Was the reply. “That’s a load of crap and you know it. If you wanted to see me so badly you would’ve done it years ago. Why now?” Keith’s harsh tone called back. “Wow, not even a hello. Where’s the man I fell in love with Keith?” Mary asked, avoiding the original question. “I spent so many nights wondering what made you leave. I thought what we had was real and we were going to last forever and everything that we wrote in that song you just sang was going to happen to us that we were too in love to ever fall apart. Then you just broke up with me for following my dream. Why? There has to be more reason than that. And I would like to know so I can control my emotions when we are working together.” Keith said as calmly as he could. “I don’t even know why I did. I, I was angry and just screaming words. I’m sorry. I do regret it.” “That’s all you have to say after five years? That’s it?” Keith asked, feeling years’ worth of frustration coming out. “I have loads to say Keith; I just don’t know how or when the right time would be.” “There is no right time to tell someone any of this! But it HAS to be done! Just tell me before everyone else comes back.” But, it was too late, for the rest of the Celtic Thunder crew came in with smiles on their faces. “Congratulations Mary! The job is yours!” Sharon exclaimed with a smile. After listening to the lads’ arguments, she was fully on board again for hiring the girl. “Wow…gee, thanks.” Mary said, mustering up as much enthusiasm as she could after her talk with Keith, who was still staring coldly at her. “Now, before we write up a contract and everything, is there anything we need to know about you that could affect you touring with us?” Sharon questioned. “Actually, there is something that I feel you should know.” Mary started slowly. “Yes…” Sharon edged her to continue. Then, looking straight at Keith, blue eyes staring into blue eyes, she said loud and clear, “I have a four year old daughter back home.”

Chapter 4 “Well, I don’t see that to be a problem. If you aren’t comfortable with leaving her with someone here, then I have no reason to say that you can’t bring her on tour with us.” Sharon said after a pregnant pause. All of the guys were looking at Mary in shock, for she looked to be too young to have a child and she wore no ring. “Okay then, thanks so much!” Mary said from onstage. The members of Celtic Thunder all clapped in joy that they had found the singer they were looking for. “Come down here sweetie and meet the rest of the lads.” Sharon gestured. Doing as she was told, Mary hopped off of the stage and walked over to the men in the back that were standing with Keith. Mary found it a bit shocking that no one had mentioned him being with her and talking to her like the way he had. “Hi, the name’s Colm.” Colm said first, holding his hand out for the very beautiful girl that was now in front of him. “George.” “Emmet.” “Neil.” They all introduced themselves and either shook her hand, or in George’s case he pulled her into a tight, fatherly embrace. “And I see that you have previously met Keith.” Sharon said when she realized that Keith wasn’t going to say his name to the girl or welcome her to the group. “Uh…yeah. We just met when he came into the auditorium just before you all came.” Mary lied, having that gut feeling that Keith did not tell any of his co-workers about her. “Splendid. There is also another man. His name is Ryan Kelly. He’s not going to be available to us until a later date because he is recovering from an accident that happened a month or so ago.” Sharon explained, trying to take away the tension that she was feeling between Keith and Mary. “Okay, awesome. When do I start?” Mary asked. Sharon laughed as she said, “Eager one now aren’t you? We have already started recording and such, but I’m going to give you a week to get ready and to decide what you are going to do about your daughter.” “Okay, thank you!” Mary said with a smile. As she got ready to leave, a voice called to her, “Hey Mary, us lads are going to get some dinner. Would you like to join us? Ya know, to get to know us and all? Sine you will be working with us for the next couple of months.” “Are you sure I’m wanted?” Mary asked uncertainly as she noticed the glare Keith was giving the man named Emmet. Neil picked up on the glare and attempted to discreetly kick him in the back of the legs to get him to loosen up. The kick was seen by everyone. “What was that for?” Keith shouted after a string of cuss words. “Mary, you are more than welcomed to join us. Now, we should get going before traffic starts to pick up and we won’t be able to go anywhere.” Neil said with a smile. Mary hesitantly returned one as she eyed Keith. Noticing her staring, he looked away as he announced, “Sorry lads, but I can’t go. Becca’s in town and I promised I meet up with her when the auditions were over.” “Bec’s here? Invite her to join us? She can come.” Emmet rushed out. It was no secret to anyone that Emmet fancied the singer’s sister and that the feelings were mutual for Rebecca. “Sorry, but I haven’t seen her in a while and I wanted to catch up with her alone.” Keith said, feeling only a tad bit upset when he noticed his friend’s face fall. He knew his sister would have loved to come but Keith knew that if he stayed with Mary any longer he might explode. Also, hearing the fact that she has a four year old daughter did not ease his mood. “That is completely understandable Keith. Spend some time with your sister; we can get to know each other some other time.” Mary said, ending the silence that had fell upon them. “Right. Well, bye.” And then the blond singer left. “What’s up his…” “So, where are we going for dinner? Neil, you pick since you know Dublin better than the rest of us.” George interrupted before Emmet could say something bad about the puzzling twenty-six year old. “Right, um, there’s this really awesome pub not too far from here that has AMAZING food. Prices aren’t that bad either.” Neil suggested. Everyone agreed that was where they would go and shortly after Mary collected her things from onstage, they left. “So, Mary darling, tell us about yourself.” George said once the food was delivered. “Well, I’m twenty-four, I live with my mom in Sligo. My parents are divorced. I have a four year old daughter named Colleen but I call her Collie and that’s about it. I don’t have a very interesting life.” Mary explained. “Are you married? Or do you have a boyfriend seeing as you have a daughter?” Colm asked. Mary’s smiled faded as she whispered, “I have neither a boyfriend nor a husband and I am not in contact with my daughter’s father any more. Please don’t judge me if you have certain beliefs on that sort of thing. I provide my daughter with the love that she needs and we get along just fine without a male figure.” “Darling, we are not here to judge. We were just curious. We all make mistakes.” Neil said as he took his hand in Mary’s. Mary quickly pulled away as tears started to form in her eyes. She hated when people referred to her daughter as a mistake. And she said so. “My daughter is not a mistake! Her father was a man that I loved very deeply and him me. What we had done was no mistake and I will not sit here with you if you think that about MY daughter.” “If it wasn’t a mistake and you both loved each other, then where is the father now?” Colm asked. “How dare you. I will not sit here and listen to you guys judge me and ridicule me for my choices. Goodbye.” And then, after throwing money onto the table for her portion of the meal, Mary got up and left. She was sitting alone in a nearby park sobbing for about fifteen minutes before she heard a voice say from behind her, “What are you doing here?”

Chapter 5 “What are you doing here?” The voice repeated when Mary said nothing the first time around. Snapping out of her shock, Mary stuttered, “Rebecca?” “No, the Easter bunny! Of course it’s me. Now, I don’t wanna spend my Friday night talking to you so I’m gonna make this quick: STOP MESSING WITH KEITH!” Twenty year old Rebecca Harkin shouted to the girl that used to be her “theoretical older sister”. The tears streaming down Mary’s face quickened as she cried, “I’m NOT messing with him! I never was!” “Then why did you leave him? And why are you back taking a job working with the same group that YOU left him for?” The red haired girl demanded angrily. “I didn’t have a choice! I had to leave him or else I would have held him back! And I am back because I need a job to support my daughter! And the reason I took this one is because I miss Keith! He was the best thing to ever happen for me and I still love him!” “Then why did you wait all these years? Huh? Why now?” Rebecca questioned, suddenly wishing she had not decided to take a stroll through the park while Keith went inside one of the restaurants where he saw his band mates. “I…I…Keith.” Mary said as she noticed the figure of Keith Harkin approach the two girls. Rebecca whipped around and became face to face with the man she looked up to and loved so much…her big brother. “Leave Mary alone Bec, what’s done is done now let’s go.” Keith said gruffly, his eyes softening from his hard glare when he noticed the tears running down his former love’s face. “But Keith, she hurt you! She broke your heart and you’re just gonna let her get away with it.” Mary let a sob escape and upon hearing that, Keith turned to his sister and said, “Bec, I came to tell you that Emmet wants to see you. Go, I’ll be right there.” Rebecca, knowing that was her brother’s way of signaling her to leave, did so without a word. “What’s wrong Mary?” Keith asked as gently as he could giving the fact he was beyond upset with the sobbing girl. “I screwed up Keith. I should have told you the truth and not just leave like I did.” “Truth? What truth?” Keith questioned. “Never mind. It’s done with now and I’ve taking care of it.” “Mary, what are you talking about?” “It doesn’t matter. Forget I said anything. I’m sorry I even thought to take this job. It’s obvious it was a bad idea. You’re mad, the other lads are furious and don’t agree with how I have previously lived my life, calling my child a mistake. And I don’t think I can take the pressure of touring. I’m gonna tell Sharon that I am rejecting the offer.” Mary rambled. Keith rolled his eyes, sighed, and sat down next to Mary on the bench. “Mare, we both know that you ramble when you’re either nervous or upset. What’s going on?” A small smile formed through the tears as the crying girl muttered, “I’ve missed hearing you call me that. I’ve missed you Keith.” “You broke up with me and then left the next day to live with your mom, only to show up five years later. I don’t think you have missed me that much.” Keith stated. “I really screwed up didn’t I?” “Don’t ask me. It’s your life you are talking about.” “I’m sorry.” Mary said after a moments thought. “Yeah, I am too. You were the one Mary. By the time you broke up with me, I had already had the ring. I frickin wanted to marry you! That’s how much I frickin loved you and then you left!” Keith yelled as he stood up. “You…you had bought a ring?” “I did.” “What did you do with it when I left? Do you still have it?” “No, the bottom of our lake does.” Keith referred to the spot that he and Mary named their lake because they were the only ones who knew about its existence. “I…” But she didn’t know what to say. Keith took that moment to walk away. Getting within talking distance of Mary, Keith turned around and said, “I won’t be your boyfriend and I won’t be your friend and I don’t forgive you. But, I will be civil to you and respect you.” Then, turning on his heel, he headed back in the direction he had come in.

Chapter 6 “MOMMY!” The shouting of a four year old filled the house as the sounds of padded feet could be heard coming from the kitchen. It was Mary’s last week with her daughter before she would be heading off for the tour. “Collie! I’ve missed you sooo much!” Mary exclaimed as she scooped her daughter up for a hug. “Did you get the job Mommy?” Colleen “Collie” O’Flaherty questioned sweetly. “Mommy did get the job baby. And to celebrate, I’m gonna take you out to ice cream.” Despite how tired she was, Mary wanted to make every moment that she had with her daughter count before she left. “Right now?” Collie squealed. With a bright smile, Mary nodded. Collie quickly ran off to get her shoes on and to tell her grandmother where she was going. “Don’t stay out to late dear, you look like you could use some sleep.” Ms. Cleary said as she pulled her only daughter into a hug. Rolling her eyes, Mary said, “Mom, I’m not a kid anymore!” “I know sweetie, but you’ll always be my baby no matter what.” Smiling softly and after hugging her mom goodbye, Mary ushered Collie out of the white one story house that had a picket fence in the front yard. “Sweetie, how would you like to stay at Grandma’s house for a while?” Mary asked her daughter as she wiped the strawberry ice cream from her face. “What about you Mommy?” The girl innocently asked. “Mommy can’t baby, she has to go to work for a little while. But don’t worry, I’ll be back in no time.” That last part was added when the tears started to form in Collie’s bright blue eyes. “Just like her father’s.” Mary thought to herself. “Okay Mommy. But you promise that you’ll be back?” The little girl said as she clung to her mother’s arm. “I promise.” Mary whispered as she pulled her daughter into a tight hug. After sitting at the bench and finishing up their ice cream, Mary decided to take Collie to the park for a little bit. When she got to the park, the site she saw was not what she expected. Keith Harkin was playing on one of the slides with two little children, a boy and a girl. Stopping in her tracks, Mary watched Keith interact with the children thinking, no wishing, that it was their little girl instead. “Mary?” Keith exclaimed, completely bewildered upon seeing his old lover at the park holding a little girl’s hand. “That’s probably her daughter.” Keith mused in his mind. “Hey-hey Keith. What are you doing here?” Mary questioned. “Well, I was visiting one of me mates and he had asked me to babysit his two kids so he could take his wife out to dinner to celebrate their wedding anniversary or something.” Keith explained as the little girl with dark brown hair and bright green eyes ran into his legs. Bending over to pick her up, Keith asked, “Why are you here?” “My daughter wanted to come and I wanted to spend some time with her before I leave for the tour.” “What’s her name?” Keith asked, as he stared at the little girl, thinking that there was something about her that seemed similar. “Colleen, but she likes to be called Collie.” “Hey Collie, my name’s Keith, I’m a…I know your mom.” Keith introduced, not wanting to say friend because he couldn’t think of Mary like that…not yet. “Hi Keith!” Collie giggled at the man in front of her. Looking at the girl for a moment too long, Keith set the girl he was holding down and said, “Collie, this is Erin, why don’t you go play with her so I can talk to your mom for a sec.” Mary’s eyes widened, but she went along with it and told her daughter to go and play with the girl Erin. After they ran off, Keith turned to Mary and asked, “Who’s the father?” Stricken with panic, Mary didn’t say anything. “Is that why you left then? Cuz you cheated on me and got pregnant? Is that why you left me?” Keith demanded, his heart breaking all over again at the thought. “No! Keith! That’s not why I left. Well, yes, I left because I was pregnant but not because I cheated on you!” Taking in a deep breath, Mary continued. “She’s yours Keith. Colleen is your daughter.” Keith’s eyes popped out of his head. “You’re lying. The Mary I knew and loved would have told me right away instead of just leaving. That is not my daughter.” “Yes she is Keith! I mean look at her! She looks just like you!” Mary cried, unable to believe what was unfolding in front of her…it was her worst nightmare. “I still don’t believe it. But, I will say this; if she is my daughter, then you should have told me. You shouldn’t have left. And I don’t want a part of her life unless you can prove she’s mine.” Tears ran down Mary’s face. “What happened to you Keith? What has made you so harsh?” Mary cried as she looked at the man in front of her…a complete stranger. “You happened.” Was all he said as he started to walk back towards the kids. Then, without saying a word to either Mary or Collie (despite the little girl’s shouts goodbye) he took each child’s hand into his own and left. “Mommy, who is that man and where is he taking Ryan and Erin?” Collie cried after she just witnessed her new friends being taken away in a heartbeat. “He has to take them home baby to their own mommy and daddy.” Mary informed her daughter softly. “Oh. Will I see them again?” “I don’t know baby…I don’t know.”
