Rosealie made her way into the what had been the living room. It now closely resembled a hospital room with the large bed and IV pole. An oxygen machine sat close at hand and medicine bottles lined a small table. The air hung heavily with sterile smell, a small vanilla air freshner worked hard to mask the scents. She made a silent vow that she would not lose herself in front of her mother. She squared her shoulders and walked to her mother's bed side,"Mom?"
"Rosealie", Elizabeth smiled weakly at her daughter,"I didn't know you were coming."
"Maybe dad wanted it to be a surprise", she took the frail hand that lay on the bedside,"I missed you."
"You haven't missed much", she took in a deep breath,"I have been here, I can't do much."
"Well, Emmet and I are both here and we'll be staying for as long as you want."
"Honey", she shook her head as she coughed,"You don't have to do that."
"You can't argue mom", she kissed her forehead,"I want this time with you."
Elizabeth nodded,"I am so happy to see you baby girl."
"I'm happy to see you too", she sat down carefully.
"How's married life and school?"
"Well, school is school, I have been learning so much. And married life, well we have our challenges, but we have worked through them. Emmet works hard between school and weekend performances. The time a part really helps us appreciate being together."
"You are both very lucky to have what you did at such a young age. I was twenty five before I met your father, I never thought I would get married."
"Have you ever had any regrets?"
"Not a single one, I have loved every moment with your father and with you," she closed her eyes,"I seem to get so tired now."
"It's okay", she stroked the hand she held,"I'll stay until you go to sleep," she sat quietly and listened as her mother's breathing slowed. Tears slipped slowly through her lashes as she fought the knawing lump in her throat. She looked up as she felt hands on her shoulders.
"How is she?", Emmet kissed her temple softly.
Rosealie gently laid her mother's hand on the bed and turned into Emmet's arms,"She's dying, its happening and there's nothing anyone can do."
"You're here, Rosie", he stroked her hair as her tears soaked into his shirt,"That's what she needs right now. To know her daughter is by her side is more comfort than you know."
"I'm scared," she squeezed her eyes shut,"I don't know what to do."
"Come on", he led her out of the room,"There's someone who wants to see you."
"Damon!", Rosealie let go of Emmet and ran into her best friend's awaiting arms.
"Slow down there line backer", he chuckled,"We just got here."
"It's okay", she nodded,"She's not doing so well."
"I know", he nodded,"She sleeping now?"
"Yeah, she gets tired easily."
"Why don't you kids go get something to eat?", Morgan suggested,"Lizzie sleeps for long periods at a time, so go and enjoy yourselves."
"Do you want anything, dad?", Rosealie asked.
"I have plenty here", he hugged her,"You kids go and enjoy."
