"You're packing?", Emmet said looking at Rosealie from the doorway.
"My cue to leave", Damon stood up,"Good luck", he patted Emmet's shoulder as he walked out of the bedroom.
"I'm sorry", she began,"I just had a small break down and kind of freaked out."
"It's okay", he flashed a smile,"Be honest with me Rose, do you want to go to be with your mom?"
She nodded,"I don't want to leave you Emmet, but I should be there with them. I am her only child."
"How soon?"
"As soon as Damon can arrange for", she studied his hazel eyes, they swam with the tears he was trying to hold back,"Emmet, I'm so sorry."
"Don't be", he said cupping her chin in his hand,"This isn't about you or me, it's about doing what's best. You should be with your mom."
Rosealie stood on her tip toes pulling his face to hers. Sliding her arms around his neck as he lifted her off the ground. Their lips moved perfectly in sync. Softly, slowly, memorizing. Emmet held her tightly against him as if she could disapper at any moment. He knew his thoughts were selfish and he chided himself inwardly, but he knew his heart was right. He couldn't live without Rosealie, for whatever reason they had been brought together. She didn't want to leave him, her heart was breaking with each movement of his lips against hers. The way his arms held her, so tight she could barely move and yet she didn't want too. She could taste the salt from both of their tears as they mingled against her lips. She needed Emmet Cahill, she feared the chasm of the Atlantic that would come between them.
"Rosie", Emmet said softly as they separated to catch their breath,"I need to ask you something."
"You can ask anything", she tried to wipe away the tears that had stained her cheeks.
He pulled her to the window seat and smiled as they gazed at each other. He took all of her in, the tears had left her eyes more aqua than he had ever seen. even after the crying spell, they were like the ocean on a summer day. Her cheeks were flushed pink and small hairs had escaped the clip she used,"I love you," he began.
"I love you too."
"I had no idea what fate had in store for us that day you came into the book store. You were a beautiful girl who only smiled and didn't say a word. There was something in your eyes that I couldn't get out of my head. Then that night at the pier, I saw you and I knew I had to take a chance and talk to you and then Damon told me about you not being able to hear. It only made me that much more interested. I wanted to know you, had to know you. And I thank God every day since then that we have been the way we are."
"Emmet, what is this about?", she smiled.
"I want to marry you Rosealie! I want to spend the rest of our lives together. I don't have the ring yet, but we can pick one out together."
She stared at him wide eyed and trembling. A million thoughts shot through her mind at the same time as she watched his awaiting face.

Fall! I have to admire Rose for having the courage to go home to be with her mother! And I'm proud that Emmet still had the guts to propose to Rose even though Damon and Marisa told him the time was not right! Please let Rose say yes!

"Emmet", she signed with shaking hands,"I......I don't.....I mean", she stopped herself trying to compose her thoughts and to calm the tremors in her hands,"I love you, you know that."
"What else do we need?", he asked simply,"I know that I don't want to be without you and that we are both willing to do what it takes to be together."
She nodded,"I know, but marriage. It's a big decision and with my mom being sick. I'm not sure of where my life is going to go now. I may have to put school on hold, choose a different school. There is a lot to think about."
"Let me do this with you", he said thankful that she could not hear the thickness of tears in his voice,"Let me be there for you."
She searched his hazel eyes, shimmering with unshed tears. There was nothing but love, anticipation, and hope. How could she tell him no? How could she tell him yes? He made it seem so simple, but could it be? Could they be happy together, could he be happy leaving Ireland to be with her? She wanted to be with him, knew that the pain of leaving him would be too great too withstand. She knew he would stand by her and hold her hand through whatever darkness lay ahead in her mother's illness. She took a deep breath and hung her head before bringing her eyes back to his,"Yes, Emmet Cahill. I will marry you."
"Thank God!", he jumped off the window seat pulling her into his arms,"I promise you", he said gazing into her eyes,"I will do everything I can to make you happy", he was quieted as she kissed him softly. They stood basking in the last light of the sun that splashed across the floor creating a golden, etheral glow,"Ring shopping tomorrow?" he was met by an ethusiastic grin and her lips moving against his excitedly.
"A toast to the happy couple", Damon said at dinner that evening.
"Yes, particularly to Cahill and his thick headedness", Marissa laughed holding up her glass.
"To my lovely new fiancee", Emmet said kissing Rosealie on the cheek as she blushed.
"To my best friend", Damon said smiling at Rosealie.
"To Damon, for asking Emmet and Marissa to join us for dinner on our first night here", Rosealie signed as Emmet translated for Marissa. After dinner they settled into the living room for a movie. Emmet and Rosealie curled on the couch next to each other while Damon and Marissa looked at airfares on the computer.
"You think those two will really make a go of it?", Marissa asked quietly.
"I think so", Damon answered,"I have never seen Rosie like she is with him. She is usually shy when it comes to guys, with Emmet she had really blossomed and come into her own."
"I am going to miss you Damon", she said suddenly.
"I'm gonna miss you too", he said softly,"It's been a really great few months."
"So when you leave is that it?"
"So you want that to be it?", he turned the question.
"Don't do that", she laughed,"Figure we have a choice. Give it a go and see how the distance plays out. Or we can just say our goodbyes and let that be that."
"What is your choice?", he looked at her.
"I asked first", she smiled.
"I like you a lot Mari and I wouldn't mind seeing where things continue to go with us."
"Good answer", she said pulling her knees up to her chest,"Because that is what I would like to do."
"Okay then", he grinned.
"Okay then."

The morning sun poured cheerfully through the window as Rosealie stretched and looked at the antique ring that now adorned her left hand. At the same moment a rush of happiness and sadness swept through her. She was leaving in just a few hours. Leaving Ireland and leaving Emmet. She hadn't been without him for the last two months and now they would be seperated until he had worked out the legalities of coming to the United States. A fear had pitted itself in her stomach at the thought of seeing her mother. What had the treatments done to her? Had the effects been as bad as she had read online? The loss of hair, pain, vomiting. The idea of seeing her mother so fragile frightened her. She let out a heavy sigh as she made her way into the bathroom to get ready for the long flight.
Emmet walked slowly up the pathway to the small house, the place where he had spent the majority of the last two months. He was taking Damon and Rosealie to the airport. His chest felt tight with the pain of having to part from Rosealie. The woman who had agreed to be his wife, he felt a smile pull at the corners of his mouth as he thought about that term, "wife". She was wearing his ring, the ring that they had found together at a small antique shop. He had known it was her right away with the intricate & delicate rose design. He had placed the ring on her finger, kissing her and promising forever. Then reality struck both of them when they realized that he had a bit more work to do before being able to go with her. They knew it would be weeks or possibly months before he would see her. He knew that he could not let her see the hurt that was so evident in his face. As he opened the door, he carefully masked the feelings with a smile,"Anyone home?"
"Kitchen!", Damon called.
"Mornin'", Emmet said strolling into the kitchen.
"Hey", he answered,"Rosie should be down shortly, she was packing her girly stuff."
"Girly stuff?", Emmet laughed.
"Make up, shampoo, body spray. All that junk that you assisted her in buying", he scowled playfully.
"She smelled great!", he defended with a grin.
"Anyway", he rolled his eyes,"I am going to start loading bags into your car."
"I'll wait for Rose", he made himself comfortable at the small table and rubbed his eyes. He felt her hand on his shoulder moments later, he took her fingers in his brushing his lips across her knuckles as he pulled her into his lap. He felt the warmth of her tears against his shirt as she tucked her head under his chin. He gently stroked her silky hair and inhaled the sweet floral scent, a scent he remembered telling her he liked while out on one of their many strolls,"You're messing up your makeup", he said as she finally brought her eyes level with his.
"I don't care", she signed before swiping at her cheeks,"I shouldn't be crying like this."
"You're a girl love," he laughed,"crying is sort of what you do."
"Mean", she smiled resting her forehead against his. She moved her hands to stray over the fine hairs at the back of his neck. She felt the crack in her heart widen as he kissed her softly and slowly allowing the kiss to linger as he wound his fingers into her hair.
"He you two", Damon said loudly causing them to jump,"We should hit the road."
"We're coming", Emmet said reluctantly allowing Rosealie to stand up. He kept an arm around her as they made their way out to the car.
"Be right back", Damon said,"One last run through, make sure we got everything."

I agree with Jenny! We girls do cry when we are to be parted from the ones we love! Besides it comes in handy when you want to lay a guilt trip on the men in your life! I hope her parents will accept Rose and Emmet being engaged!

They checked the last of their luggage at the counter and made their way to the ticketed passengers only area. Rosealie held tightly to Emmet's hand as the sign reading "Boarding Pass Required" loomed large and menacing. He felt her take a deep breath as Damon went ahead of them into the security queue,"Let me know when you land", he studied her face. He cupped her face in his hands,"I love you." he kissed her gently.
"I should go", she signed never moving her eyes from his.
"It's not forever", he allowed his fingers to stroke her hair and then her face,"We will be together soon,"
"Not soon enough", she with held the urge to sob uncontrollably,"I love you."
"I love you too", he kissed her forehead before their fingertips separated. He shoved his hands into his pocket as he watched her run to catch up with Damon. He smiled as she turned and gave a final wave. He tried to be as enthusiastic as possible and yet he felt them empty wave threatening to consume him as he walked out to the car. He sighed and rubbed his eyes as he started the engine. There was no time to mope about, he had to be with Rose as soon as possible. He would start the next morning.
Damon watched Rosealie as the plane began to taxi away from the gate. Tears trickled slowly down her cheeks as she stared blankly out the window, her fingers mindlessly turning the ring on her left hand. His best friend had become a woman before his eyes over the last several months. He had always known that she would fall in love, but he didn't know the transformation that could take place. He took her hand carefully as she looked at him,"It's not the end Rosie", he smiled wiping her tears,"You two will be back together before long."
"I hope so", she signed with her free hand,"I am scared though, about my mom."
"That you will have to try not to think about until we land. I have some sleep aid if you want it."
"Do you mind?"
"Course not" pulled a back pack out from under the seat pulling out the bottle of pills,"Here you go he handed her two." He stopped a flight attendant to ask for water. Soon after they took off Rosealie took the pills and fell fast asleep. The flight back to the states was long, Damon drifted in and out of sleep. Rosealie slept soundly next to him, he worried for her with the separation from Emmet and facing what lay ahead with her mother. He was grateful when the landing announcement was made nearly eight hours later. He shook Rosealie awake,"We're home."
Rosealie stretched and looked out the window, New York lay gray and bleak in a hazy summer rain. Home, the last place she truly wanted to be. It hurt her heart to think that way, but she missed Emmet and she was scared to face what she knew was coming. Scared to face it without him by her side. She took in a gulp of air and closed her eyes to clear her mind. They still had another few hours of travel back to upstate New York. Damon's mother would be picking them up at the airport. Once they had taxied into the gate the passengers were deboarded and the process of getting through customs began.
"Damon!", Meredith called to her son.
"Hey mom!", he smiled at her.
"How was the flight?" she looked to both of them.
"She slept most of the way", he signed for Rosealie to understand.
"Rosie, how are you honey?"
"Not sure", she shrugged,"Have you seen my parents?"
"I have", she shifted uneasily.
"How is my mother?"
Meredith was quiet for a moment,"She is not well Rose, I'm sorry." She watched as the young woman simply shrugged and averted her eyes to a spot on the carpet,"Let's get your bags and we'll be our way."
"Thanks for coming mom", Damon said as the three made their way to the luggage claim.
"You are welcome sweetheart," she glanced back at Rosealie who was busy typing a message on her phone,"How is Rosie doing?"
"It's a long story", he answered,"She's really worried about her mother, but she met someone while we were on vacation. It's all a jumbled emotional mess."
"Is she serious with this boy?"
"Look at her left hand."
"Oh my", she sighed.
"Don't say anything to her or her parents. It's just too much right now."
"I won't, it's for her to tell", she agreed. They stood with a trolley waiting for all the luggage pieces to come across the carousel. They were in the car and headed for the Hudson a short time later. Rosealie sat in the back with her phone in her hand. Looking over the messages from Emmet, he was glad she was safe, he missed her, loved her, wanted to be there with her. She had promised that she was okay and that she would give him updates as she knew more about her mother. She had made herself sound stronger than she felt. Once she saw her mother the pieces would start to fall into place. At that point she would know what she was dealing with.
