Mindy’s heart pounded. She scrambled around her small cottage, grabbing everything she deemed important and throwing them in a small bag. She had to hurry, they would be here soon. Her hand hovered over her pots of herbs, so much work, but no…they had to stay. She could gather more where ever she was going. Yeah…where ever she was going, that was the question. Only a few more minutes, Mindy could hear their shouts coming nearer. She quickly scanned the cottage. Her book of spells sat there on the table. It was the reason she was in this trouble in the first place. She should leave it…but she quickly swept it up and stuffed it with her meager belongings and closed the satchel. Quickly, she slipped out the front door and into the forest beyond, just as the angry mob of villagers approached her cottage. She hurried away, sure her footsteps would be heard. But the villagers were intent on their prey: the witch.
“KILL THE WITCH!!!!”
She heard the man yell. She recognized the man’s voice. The toad! The swine! He deserved the face full of warts she’d given him, though unintentionally. The Reverend Josiah Sweeney, (or Swiney as Mindy liked to call him). She ran through the woods. Her footsteps sounding like thunder in the silence of the woods. Her breath came in small gasps. GAH! How did she ever get herself in this situation? It was the boredom, the endless boredom of her life that got her in this mess. Well that and that horrid Book of Spells.

Mindy...Yes....a witch...and not a very good one at that! ;D Thank you for all the nice comments. Glad you like the story. The smell of smoke made Mindy lift her head and turn back. She saw a small glow through the forest. The glow increased in size as it consumed greedily. The villagers were burning down her beautiful little cottage. The cottage she grew up in, with her maternal grandmother. Her heart gave a squeeze as tears pooled in her lovely eyes. Her grandmother had taught her so many things; like how to forage for plants and herbs and how to use them for healing. That’s what Mindy considered herself, a healer; not the witch that she was accused of being. Of course, to be perfectly honest, she was a witch too. Although, not a very good one. All the females on her mother’s side were witches. Her grandmother had instructed her how to bring forth the 3 elements; the earth, the air and the water, to do good. Her grandmother had warned her to never use magic as a weapon. That evil brought out evil. Mindy had never gotten the hang of using magic, and quite frankly, it made her a bit queasy to try. More often than not, the lessons her grandmother tried to teach her had backfired. Once when her grandmother showed her how to produce a beautiful flower from mother earth, she grew only a weed. In another instance, she tried to light a fire in the fireplace, resulting in the fireball almost hitting her cat, Captain, causing her to screech and race out the window, her tail smoking. No, magic wasn’t for her. So after her grandmother had passed on, Mindy had settled in as the village healer, and never opened her grandmother’s Book of Spells. That is until today.

Today started as any other day. Captain purring loudly and walking across her face. “Gah! Captain stop! Just a few more minutes please!” Captain responded by plopping her body right on top of Mindy’s face and purring loudly.
Mindy sat up quickly and gasped for air.
“Okay! Okay! I am up…you horrid little cat!” Mindy frowned at her friend, who didn’t mind being yelled at, she just purred and rubbed herself against her.
“Yes…yes…I see that thou art hungry. I shall see you get something after I wash.”
The cat jumped down and waited patiently by the door as if she understood exactly what Mindy had said.
Mindy climbed out of bed and went to the nightstand, poured water into the bowl and splashed her face. Slipping off her nightgown, she donned an old gown. She brushed her long dark hair and braided it, pinning the braid in a nice tidy bun. It had been a very long night. Her dreams were crazier than normal. Great silver flying beasts and moving pictures….Great cities, with buildings as tall as trees, maybe even mountains. And there was a man there, his eyes as blue as the sky, his smile…so sweet. It made her heart race, just to think of him. Such a handsome man…she wondered if she had ever met him. Of course not...she would surely remember such a wondrous man. Shaking her head at her queer dreams, she turned and opened the door. Captain raced out and meowed loudly, demanding her daily milk.
“Ah yes…my friend. You shall have your breakfast.” Mindy picked up Captain and hugged the cat to her. Captain allowed the hug for a few minutes, then began to squirm. She set the cat down and proceeded to fill the bowl up with milk, stirred up the fire in the fireplace and started a tea kettle for her own breakfast.
Before she knew it, Mindy had breakfast done and the little cottage tidied up…and the long day ahead of her. Captain had headed outside, for a little hunting trip in the woods, so that left Mindy without even someone to talk to. She sighed. Perhaps she would read. She ran her fingertip over the spines of the few books she owned, books that she’d read so often she practically knew them by heart. Nothing appealed to her. Then she spotted her grandmother’s Book of Spells. Well, perhaps she would just take a quick peek; she hadn’t opened that book for a long time. She pulled the book off the shelf, grabbed her bonnet that hung on a hook by the door, and headed out into the beautiful day. She found a nice shady spot to sit and read.
The day passed quickly as Mindy read the many spells that she thought may be helpful in her healing. The sun was already close to setting. Captain had returned from her hunting trip and lay next to her, napping. She had just gotten to a very interesting spell on getting rid of warts, when a loud voice broke her concentration.
“Idleness is a sin, Mistress Mindy! If thee must read, the Good Book should be thy guide!”
Mindy stood up quickly.
“Good day, Reverend. What brings thou to my humble cottage? Are thee ill, sir?”
“I have decided, Mistress Mindy, that thou should not be allowed to live out here by yourself, practicing your witchery. I have decided to make thee my wife and mold thee into an obedient wife. Once thou are my wife, thou will no longer practice thy wicked ways.”
The reverend stepped closer to her and ran his hand down her face, cupping her chin tightly. Mindy felt her skin crawl. She looked down, quivering in fear.
“I thank ye kindly sir, but I must decline thy kind offer.”
The reverend grabbed her chin tightly and pulled her face up.
“Thou has it wrong Mistress. Thou has no choice here. It has been decided. Thou art a sinner that must be saved and I have kindly offered to save you. Thy beauty has bewitched me. If thou refuses to marry me, then thou shall die as the witch thou art!”
Anger surged through her. Anger like she had never felt before. It filled her very pores and made her heart pound.
“Sir! Unhand me! I would not marry thou if thou were the last man on earth. Thou art a pompous toad and thy touch makes my skin crawl and my stomach cramp!”
The reverend smiled evilly.
“Such beauty wasted. Marry me or die as the witch thou art, Mistress.”
“I would rather die than marry a wretched swine!” Mindy looked at the reverend defiantly.
The reverend grabbed her by the shoulders and pulled her to him, kissing her on the mouth with his wet slimey lips. Mindy felt her stomach heave. She wriggled free and pulled back, wiping her mouth with the back of her arm.
“How dare thee touch me, thou horrible, repulsive toad of a man!” She was shaking in her anger. “I shall teach you to lay your filthy hands on me!”
Mindy raised her arms. The words of the spell she had been reading were fresh in her head. She wasn’t really intending to hurt him, just to scare him and make him go away.
“Mother Earth, I call to you!” The wind came up and a large cloud of dust swirled.
“Bumps on skin, an ugly sight. Match bumps to man, and do what’s right. Warts to face, so all can see! So shall I speak, so shall it be!”
The cloud of dirt swirled around the reverend and he held up his hands, covering his face. As Mindy watched, his red face started to grow large repulsive warts.
“THOU WICKED FEMALE, THOU SHALL REGRET THIS DAY!” he shouted at her.
Mindy just looked at him, daring him to come closer.
“Good day Reverend.” She picked up her book and calmly walked to her cottage. Outwardly, she was calm. Inwardly, she was scared to death. What had she done? Closing the door, she leaned against it and began to think. She had to leave! Captain meowed and rubbed against her legs, as if pronouncing her approval.
“Yes…Captain…I know the offal deserved it. But we have to get out of here and hide. The villagers will come for me soon. I am sorry my anger has put both of us in danger.”
Mindy picked up the cat and hugged her. Her mind raced. Where should she go? Well she’d think about that later. She needed to get out of here.
She quickly started packing her satchel.

Mindy...thank you very much for the edits. Hope you are enjoying your story so far. Thank you all for the awesome comments. I will try to keep it exciting...and we will find out who the blue eyed sweetie is..soon..very soon. ;D Mindy thought about her day, as she quickly ran through the forest. Maybe she let her temper get away from her. No…she would still be here, running for her life, even if she hadn’t performed the spell. She wouldn’t marry that toad for anything. She glanced back to see if she was being pursued, and then tripped over a tree root, landing on her knees. “Praying for deliverance, Mistress? It is too late for thee, I am afraid.” Mindy saw the boots step in front of her. She looked up to see the Reverend’s warty face, sneering at her. She never uttered a sound. She was soon surrounded by angry villagers, holding pitchforks and large sticks. She looked at each of them; hoping one would help her, as she had helped many when they were ill. She saw only hate and fear in their eyes. She hung her head, looking like she was giving up, but her mind worked trying to figure out how to get out of this mess. “Tie the witch up! We shall take her to the church for her trial!” The Reverend ordered. Mindy felt her arms being tied in front of her, the rope then tethering her like a dog on a lead. The villagers pulled her along toward the village. “Not so high and mighty now…are thee witch?” The Reverend whispered in her ear. Mindy turned and hissed at him, making him jump back in fear. She smiled to herself silently thanking Captain for the idea. Captain! She almost forgot about her! She prayed her friend was okay. They entered the village and walked down the center of town toward the church. Many people peeked out their doors and watched the procession walk by. Some stood along the road and yelled “Witch!”, some even throwing a stone at her. The villagers filled in behind her, as the procession reached the church. Tears filled Mindy’s eyes. Never had she felt so hated. She had helped and healed many of these people, if not all of them. She spied her friend Sybil, standing on the side, wringing her hands and crying. Mindy sent her a small smile, trying to comfort her friend. The villagers led her to the front of the church and turned her toward the entering villagers. Mindy held her head high and watched them. Everyone filed in and sat, not one looked at her. All except Sybil, who tried to run up to her, but was harshly held back by her mother. Reverend “Swiney” stepped up to the pulpit. “My friends. We have a daughter of the devil in our small, pious community. Thy has brought her before thee, to decide her fate. Mistress Mindy has been allowed to live, outside of the village, doing the devil’s deeds long enough. If thou need proof of her evil ways, just look what she has done to me, a pure and godly man.” He gestured toward his wart-ridden face. Many of the villagers gasped and murmured to each other. “Good sir, tell us how this happened? Many have gone to Mistress Mindy’s home and been helped. Many of our children have been cured by her.” one man asked. “CURED BY WITCHERY!!!”, The Reverend yelled. “Do not be misled by this evil woman. She is the devil’s handmaiden. I, myself, have seen her wickedness. I stopped by her cottage, to offer thyself as her savior and found her reading the devil’s handbook. At thy own peril, I tried to free her from Satan’s clutches, but the beast came into her. She held her hands up and called to the devil himself, speaking to him in tongues. Then I felt a great burning to my face. This is the result of her witchery! We are a pious people. We must not allow this witch in our midst! I say, we must kill the witch and save ourselves and our children!” Some of the villagers cheered, others murmured to each other. Elias Baker stood up and turned. Everyone quieted in respect for village elder. “I must protest the treatment of Mistress Mindy. We have all watched her grow up. She has lived among us her whole life. All of us at one time or other have been healed by her or her grandmother. I have never seen her say or do anything that would deem her witch. She has only been good and kind.” “Friend Baker, we all know the devil can be deceitful. That he hides and does his evil ways through seemingly innocent women. Look at my face, sir and see the evidence of the witch’s treachery! But do not let only thou eyes be the judge. Perhaps we should let God himself decide her fate. I say we have a trial by water. Throw her in the lake! If God deems her guilty of witchery, the water will reject her and she will float to the top. If she stays under, the waters of baptism will accept her, and she shall be called innocent. What say you?” There were many “yeas” in the room. “Then let it be agreed. Tomorrow morn, Mistress Mindy will be tried by water at dawn. Let God determine the witch’s fate!” The reverend stated. Mindy was pulled out the door of the church and thrown in a small shed. She hit the floor and heard the lock click behind her. It was so dark, Mindy could not even see her hand in front of her face. She was scared. Scared and determined to escape this awful mess. Her mind raced as her heart thumped wildly. She knew the trial by water. A large rock is tied to the witch, so she would sink like a stone. There is no way to escape drowning. Think!

Mindy felt her way over to the corner of the shed and sat to think. If only she had her grandmother’s Book of Spells, she could search for an escape spell or a spell to turn invisible. “Mindy! Are thee in there? Are thee alright?” It was Sybil, calling to her from the outside of the shed. Mindy scrambled over to the wall.
“Sybil! I am here.”
“Oh Mindy! I am so sorry! I pray for thee sister!”
“Sybil, can thou help me? Can thou get my bag? And Captain? Does thou know where Captain is?” Mindy asked her friend through the wall.
“She is at my house, Mindy. She was following you and I hid her so no one would hurt her. The Reverend Sweeney has thou bag, but I think I can get it. Stay still, Mindy, I shall get it for thee.” Mindy heard Sybil move away before she could warn her to be careful. She did not want her only friend besides Captain to be hurt.
Time passed slowly by. Mindy wondered if Sybil had been caught. She prayed that she had not. It could have been 15 minutes or it could have been two hours later, but finally Mindy heard a commotion at the door.
“Please sir, open the door so I may give Mistress Mindy her evening meal.” It was Sybil. Mindy’s heart pounded in fear.
“The witch needs no meal. She is to die in the morning anyway.” The guard pronounced.
“Ah…so thy knows all then. I wonder why we even had a trial, when all we need do is come and ask thou….SIR ALL-KNOWING!!! Maybe you even know God’s will!” Mindy could just picture Sybil poking the poor guard’s chest and started to smile. She was blessed with such a good friend.
“Alright Mistress! Thou may bring the witch food, but you must come right out and no talking!” Mindy heard the door unlock and open a crack.
“What was that?” She heard Sybil exclaim loudly.
“What?” She heard the guard say. Mindy saw her bag being pushed quickly through the doorway. Mindy quickly slid the bag out of direct sight of the guard.
“I thought I saw some evil red eyes staring at me from those bushes. Can you go look?” She asked the guard.
“Nay, I stay right here and guard the witch.” The guard sounded nervous. “Now go and give the witch her last meal.” He snickered meanly.
Sybil came into the shed with a plate of bread and cheese. She carried a lantern with her and set it on the floor.
“I tried to put the fear of demons in him.” She whispered, “I hope it makes him nervous all night, the swine.”
“I’m not sure how I am going to escape. Keep Captain with thee at all times. Thank-you my friend, I love thee.” Mindy hugged her.
“Good luck, Mindy. I love you too.” Sybil turned and walked out of the shed, deliberately forgetting the lantern. Mindy smiled…good job friend.
Now Mindy had a lamp to read by. She opened the bag and brought out the Book of Spells and began to read while nibbling on the bread and cheese.
Finally just before dawn, she found a spell that might work. It was going to be risky, but it was her only hope. She sat down to memorize the spell. It had to be perfectly said and perfectly timed. She then prayed to God the Father to help her.
Finally she heard commotion outside the shed. She quickly tucked the book in the large pocket of her skirt and stood up to await her fate.

The door was unlocked and opened. The Reverend Sweeney stood in the doorway, a malevolent smile on his warty face “This is your last chance, Mindy. Did thou decide to marry me?” He stated.
“Never would I marry a toad like you!” She declared.
“Then die today, foolish, wicked woman!” He loudly declared.
Two men came in and tied her hands in front of her and tied a rope around her neck, just as they did the day before. They led her through the village and out by the lake that the village was built next to. They stood her on a large flat rock that stood on the edge of the lake and turned her toward the crowd, then tied a large, heavy rock to one of her legs. Mindy looked at the rock…this could be a problem. She then searched the crowd of villagers, looking for Sybil. She finally spotted her in the back of the crowd, holding Captain. Perfect. She then checked the men that were closest to her. Spotting what she was looking for, she smiled inwardly. Perfect. With a last prayer to God, she awaited the perfect time. Element of surprise would hopefully give her the time she needed.
The Reverend stood in front of her and started preaching to the villagers. Good, here was her chance. Hopefully the pig talked until she could get her spell cast.
“Dear Friends…”
“Mother Earth, I call to you.” Mindy declared in a soft voice.
“We assemble this morn….”
“Brother Air, I call to you.”
“To decide the fate of this wicked female….”
“Sister Water, I call to you.”
Just then a terrible wind came up, blowing leaves, sticks and dirt around the villagers. The lake started stirring with great waves behind Mindy, but not touching her.
“Hark thee pitchfork, tool of hate.” “Aid me to escape my fate.” Mindy started her spell.
The Reverend turned, suddenly realizing what was happening. The pitchfork that a man near her held in his hand, flew into Mindy’s hands.
“Throw her in the water! Quickly!” The reverend yelled to the men over the wind. The men moved toward her.
“Fly away and set me free.” “So shall I speak……” Mindy yelled above the wind.
The two men grabbed her arms and threw her into the lake.
“So shall it be!” Mindy managed to say, just before the water covered her head. The rock tied to her leg pulled her down into the depths of the lake.
Mindy held her breath and started to panic.
“Up! Go up!” She thought. The pitchfork still in her hand vibrated and started pulling her up. Just when she felt she couldn’t hold her breath another second, her head broke free. But unfortunately the pitchfork kept going straight up, and Mindy didn’t know how to stop it.
“Halt!” She finally yelled. The pitchfork stopped and hovered. Mindy managed to put her one leg that wasn’t weighted down over the handle and pull herself partway up. Now….to go get Captain.
“Ok…down.” She said. The pitchfork headed down toward the villagers, who all stood, wide-eyed and mouth hanging open, watching her. She swooped over them, hitting a couple of men in the head with the rock that hung from her other foot. That’s when the idea popped into her head. She turned the pitchfork and headed straight toward the Reverend Sweeney. Then swooped up and let the rock swing. The rock hit him, right in the chest. The nasty swine fell backward, arms swinging widely, and fell, right into the lake. Laughing loudly, she turned her pitchfork around again and headed toward Sybil and Captain. The villagers all hit the ground, as the rock swung over their heads.
Sybil sat Captain on Mindy’s shoulder, took a knife from her father’s waistband and cut the ropes that held Mindy’s hands and the rock.
“Thank-you, for being my friend.” Mindy whispered. “I hope thou doesn’t get in trouble for this.”
“I’ll just tell them thy was bewitched. How can they not believe after what they have seen.” Sybil whispered back. “Good luck, Mindy. God Bless you where ever you land.”
Mindy held on to Captain and headed the pitchfork east toward the ocean. Where should she go? Just then a picture popped into her head. A picture of a smiling face, with laughing blue eyes. The pitchfork jerked and sped up. Faster than Mindy had ever imagined she could go…faster and faster. She held onto Captain and the pitchfork for dear life. Dear Lord! She was going to die after all. Suddenly, the pitchfork slowed and headed downward. She looked down and wondered where she was. There was roadways with large creatures with wheels that rolled on them. And right in front of her, a very large wheeled black vehicle, with many windows. Her pitchfork was headed right for it. Gah! She was going to hit it!
“Halt!” She yelled just before she hit the metal thing. Unfortunately, the pitchfork halted, but Mindy did not. Captain yowled and jumped and Mindy kept right on moving, headfirst into a stopped bus that carried the Celtic Thunder main stars. She covered her head and felt the thunk….then everything went black. .

“Damian! You bloody little Wanker!” Keith shouted. Hysterical laughter could be heard coming from Damian. Pounding footsteps. A thunk and a bang. More hysterical laughing.
“You lads…knock it off.” George quietly told the two as he stepped over the two laying on the floor, Keith on top, pummeling the laughing Damian. George headed over to the coffee pot. He pulled out a cup and proceeded to make a cup of tea.
Paul sat reading a book at the table in the bus, a bowl of Cheerios in front of him. He barely noticed the commotion coming from the sleeping quarters in the back of the bus. It was a regular occurrence, with Damian always up to something.
George sipped his tea and sat across from Paul.
“So...what you reading today?” He asked Paul.
“American history…did you know that this area is known for witch trials?” He told George as he put another spoonful of Cheerios in his mouth.
“Hmmph…Don’t know about you, but I’ve known a few witches in my time.” George smiled.
Ryan entered the bus in his running clothes, sweat still running down his face, his shirt clinging to him, a towel hung around his neck. He headed to the fridge to grab a carton of orange juice. He opened it the carton and started drinking it.
“Yeah Kelly…put your name on that carton…I don’t want to drink out of it now, ya slug.” Paul told him.
Out of the corner of his eye, Paul saw something outside. He turned to see a rather large black bird flying erratically and seemed to be headed toward the bus. He didn’t listen to Ryan’s reply as he watched the bird come closer to the bus. Utter disbelief registered in his mind, as the large bird took the shape of a flying woman…holding a….cat?? Paul was halfway up when the woman hit the bus.
“THUNK!” “What was that? Hey! I told you lads to knock it off!” George yelled to the back of the bus.
“Not us. That was outside!” Damian came running from the back, followed by Keith. Paul was already out the door of the bus. The others followed.
Outside, Paul saw the girl lying by the bus in a heap. He reached her and knelt on the ground beside her, grabbing her hand. She was dressed in an old black gown, on her head an old white cap. The other lads followed. Ryan knelt beside her on the other side, grabbing her other hand.
The first thing Paul noticed was her beauty. High cheekbones, porcelain white skin. She was lovely one, that’s for sure.
“What do we do? Who is she and where’d she come from?” Keith asked as he looked down at the girl.
Paul patted Mindy’s hand, at a loss for what to do. Ryan on the other hand, started rubbing it.
“She just ….flew…out of nowhere…and hit the bus.” Paul said, disbelieving his own words.
“Flew out of nowhere??? Like flying? Like birds?” Damian knelt down and looked at Mindy. “Yeah…right.”
Mindy groaned. All the lads moved forward.
“Hey…what are you lads looking at?” A voice from behind them asked. Neil walked off the bus and walked toward the group.
“It’s a girl!…a flying girl!” Keith said. Neil walked up and looked down at the girl.
Mindy opened her eyes. She blinked…then blinked again. She closed her eyes. Then opened them again. They were still there. Six handsome angels looking down at her. She must have died and she’s now in heaven. One angel was holding one hand and …..Oh Lord in Heaven!!!! The man of her dreams was holding the other!

“Where am I? Is this heaven?” Mindy asked. “Art thou angels?” Paul chuckled.
“If this be heaven, then you’re the angel.” Paul smiled down at her. “Are you alright lass?”
“I’m sure I don’t know sir.” Mindy couldn’t stop staring at him. Her head hurt. “My head throbs.”
“Yeah…and sure it would after taking a flying header into a bus.” Damian commented. “Paul said you flew…like a bird.”
Mindy panicked. She just escaped being killed as a witch, she was sure she couldn’t escape again.
“NAY! NAY SIR….thou art wrong! I did not fly!” Mindy started to rise.
“Calm down lass, no one…now who’s this?” Ryan looked down at a little black cat, who walked up and started rubbing herself up against him…purring loudly.
“That’s Captain, sir. She is my cat.”
“Captain huh?” George bent to pick up the little thing. The cat purred louder, pushing her head under his chin. “Hellow puir wee one. You’ve had quite a time of it haven’t you? How about a little cream?” Captain gave him a little meow like she knew exactly what he said.
“So lass…who are you? Where’s your family? Can we help you home?” Ryan asked her.
Mindy was having trouble understanding what they were saying. Her head was dizzy and they talked so fast and funny. And all of them were so BIG and everyone seemed to be talking at once.
“I don’t know…….” Mindy started to say.
Paul interrupted. “Puir lass! She doesn’t remember who she is! We better get her up and into the bus.”
His angel. That’s what she was to him now. Paul didn’t understand what was going on, but somehow he couldn’t let her go. He knew that he had deliberately misunderstood what she was going to say, but he just wasn’t ready to let her escape without finding out who she was. Since he first saw her lying there, he knew she was his and he wanted to keep her. It was such an odd feeling for him. He carefully scooped her up into his arms.
“Nay sir! Thou must put me down! Tis unseemly!” Mindy protested.
“Shhh Angel…ye bumped yer noggin pretty good and I will not let you walk a step until you’ve seen a doctor.” He headed to the bus.
“So why do you get to carry the girl?” Ryan followed complaining.
“Because I saw her first, she’s mine…that’s why.” Paul smiled down at Mindy. She was looking up at him with her large chocolate brown eyes. His heart did a little flip.
Mindy had no clue what the men were talking about. She only knew that she was short of breath and looking into the most beautiful pair of blue eyes she’d ever seen. The same blue eyes she’d dreamed about forever. He smiled down at her, and her heart started pounding harder.

I am so glad you are all enjoying the story!!!
Paul carried her into the bus. Mindy finally noticed her surroundings. What the heck was going on? This was the strangest place she had ever seen! Paul laid her down on a couch and stuffed a pillow behind her head. He must have noticed the panic on her face. “I guess I never introduced myself. Hi…my name is Paul Byrom. I am a singer in a show called Celtic Thunder.” He smiled at her and shook her hand.
“We all sing…hi. I’m Ryan Kelly.” Ryan lifted her hand and kissed it. She pulled her hand back quickly.
Damian laughed.
“Looks like the ol’ Kelly charm isn’t working for this one old boy.” He patted Ryan on the back. “Hello…I’m Damian McGinty. Can you show me how you fly?”
“Damian…the girl didn’t fly… now drop it. How do you do, lass. I’m Keith Harkin. If there is anything I can do for you, just ask.” He smiled widely, showing off two lovely dimples and a sparkle in his eye. Mindy couldn’t help herself, she smiled shyly back at him.
Next a smaller man walked up and squatted down, eye level to Mindy. He held her hand and smiled.
“Hello…my name is Neil. Don’t let these big ugly guys scare you. They’re no too scary once you get to know them. Now you just call me and I’ll come runnin if you need anything….okay?” He smiled at her and gave her hand a little squeeze before releasing it.
“Now boys…off with you and give the puir lassie a rest!” The large man with no hair said loudly. Mindy jumped. All the men walked away, with the exception of Paul. “My name is George, lass. If any of these lads give you any trouble, you just say the word and I’ll send them away.” George told Mindy quietly. He handed Captain to her. Captain walked around her, sniffing. Then found a comfy place to lie right in the middle of Mindy’s stomach. This reminded Mindy that there was something she needed to do right this minute. She started to rise. “Hold on Angel…where do you think you’re going?” Paul asked.
“Please sir..I…” Mindy’s face turned red.
“What? I can get you something.” Paul told her.
Mindy’s face turned redder.
“Sir…please…I must go outside.” She answered.
“Outside? But you just came from outside. Did you forget something? I’ll get it for you.” He stood and waited for her to answer.
“Sir…I must find the privy.” Mindy whispered, her face as red as a beet. She was so embarrassed she wanted to hide.
“The privy? OH! You need to use the washroom? I’ll show you where it is.” He picked her up and walked with her down the aisle of the bus until he came to a door. He set her down and opened the door.
“Here it is…it’s very small.”
Mindy looked in the room. Her confusion must have shown on her face.
“What’s the matter…Angel? This is the privy.”
“Yes…of course…I knew that.” Mindy walked in the room and shut the door behind her, her face flaming red. A privy inside a cottage! And no foul odor! Tis wonderous! She looked around the small room. Looking down at the toilet she looked thoughtfully at it. Well, surely she could figure this out. It was shaped like a chamber pot but it had a porcelain tank behind it, with a small silver knob. Mindy poked the knob. Nothing happened. She pushed the knob. Nothing happened. She then turned the knob and a large gush of water swirled around the chamber pot. Mindy jumped back as the water swirled and went down a hole at the bottom. Mindy smiled…amazed at the wonderous chamber pot. It must be magic! She turned the silver knob again…but very little water came out that time. Maybe she broke it. She finally decided she was going to burst if she didn’t do something soon. So she used the fancy chamber pot, then turned the silver handle. Whoosh…the water came in the pot, swirled around and emptied itself. She then set herself to exploring the rest of the room. There was a knock at the door.
“Hey…you okay in there?” Paul asked.
“Yes Sir…I am fine.” She answered. A roll of paper hung on a dowel right by the chamber pot. She picked up a piece and pulled it toward her wondering what it was for. It was very soft, too soft and fine to write on. Perhaps there were words on it, like a book. She kept pulling on it, looking for words but there were none. Soon all the paper was laying in a big pile on the floor and the roll was empty. She looked down at the mess. Now what was she to do? She couldn’t just leave it there. Looking around, she saw a cabinet under what looked like a washbowl. She opened it up and scooped all the paper into the cabinet and shut the door. There. Next was the washbowl. There was no water about, but there were little silver handles like on the chamber pot. She turned one, and out came some water. She turned the other one…and out poured more water. Wonderous!!!!!! A pump INSIDE a cottage!!!! Paul knocked on the door again.
“Angel…are you sure you are alright! Do you need some help?”
Mindy washed her hands in the water and shut it off. Then turned it on and shut it off again. Turned it on and shut it off. Amazed by the sight. She opened the cabinet underneath and dried her hands on the toilet paper there, then shut the door again. She stood and opened the door and walked out, right into a brick wall named Paul.

Hey guys....I hope your having fun reading the Mindy story. Maybe I should have called it "The Perilous Adventures of Mindy" ;D. I enjoy reading all the comments!
Paul caught the girl to him when she came out of the bathroom and ran into him. He couldn’t help running his hands up her back. She fit so perfectly in his arms, her head just skimming his chin. She looked up at him in surprise. Eyes locked. The urge to taste her lips was overwhelming. He bent his head to give in to temptation but Mindy pulled away, her face flaming. He smiled…ah well. There was always later. He bent to pick her up again. “Nay sir…please do not pick me up. I am fine..I am sure that I can walk on my own. My head only aches a little now.” Mindy turned and walked to the front of the bus and sat down on the edge of the couch.
“Well at least let me get you a couple of ibuprophen for that aching head.” Paul reached into the cabinet for a bottle, opened it and dumped a couple of pills into his hand. He opened the small fridge and brought out a bottle of water.
Sitting on the couch next to Mindy, Paul handed her the small capsules.
“And what is this …ibu…pro? “ Mindy looked at the capsules in her hand.
“Ibuprophen…medicine for pain relief. You’ve never had ibuprophen or aspirin or Tylenol? In this bus, there are aching heads a plenty. We keep a large bottle around at all times.” Paul opened the bottle of water. “Go ahead, swallow the pills, they will make you feel better.”
“Yes...okay.” Mindy popped one pill in her mouth uncertainly. When nothing unusual happened, she took the other pill. When Paul handed her the bottle of water, she hesitantly smelled the liquid to determining the liquid was not some strong spirits. Relieved that it was just water, she took a drink. The water tasted fresh and clean, nothing like the water she was used to drinking. Just then her stomach loudly letting the both of them know that it had been awhile since she had eaten anything. Mindy blushed, when Paul laughed.
“Sounds like you could use something in your stomach. Would you like something to eat? I’m sure I can scrounge something up around here.” He helped her to stand and walked her over to the table. “Would you like a sandwich or a bowl of Cheerios?”
Mindy wasn’t listening to Paul. She noticed the open book, still lying open on the table. The one Paul had been reading when Mindy had hit the bus.
“Yes, thank you, sir.” She offhandedly told him as she pulled the book toward her. Mindy noticed the text discussed the Salem witch trials of 1692. She was lost in the book which told of witch trials and the persecution of young women. She was so caught up in the book, she barely noticed the bowl of cereal set next to her.
“You better eat up before that gets soggy.” Mindy looked up from the book and noticed the bowl of round things floating in milk. What was this? Soup? She took the spoon and tasted it. It was cold. The round things tasted sweet like honey and maybe even a bit of nuts. It was very good. The milk was cold and a bit watery, but all in all, the cold soup tasted very good. Paul then sat a sandwich next to the bowl of cereal. The sandwich looked to have fruit preserves coming from it.
“Thank you sir…thou is most kind.” Mindy picked up half of the sandwich and inspected it before she took a bite. She tasted strawberries and nuts again. It was delicious.
“So…I think we can be a little less formal here, Angel. How about you call me Paul and I call you…? Can you remember your name?” Paul sat down across from Mindy and watched her eat the food like it was the first time she ever eaten Cheerios and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. She acted so strangely, like everything was new to her. He had questions, lots of questions but she was so timid and shy, he thought that perhaps taking it slowly would be for the best.
“Melinda Kinney…Sir..Paul. But thy friends and family call me Mindy.” Mindy answered.
“Mindy. So we are friends, right? May I call you Mindy too? Paul asked her.
“Yes,Si..Paul. We are friends.” Mindy smiled at him. “So may I ask thee a question?”
“Thou speaks oddly, where art thou from?” She asked.
“Well, we are from Ireland. We’re touring the states for a show called Celtic Thunder. And by the way, you speak a little oddly yourself. Where are you from?” He asked.
“I lived in a cottage with my grandmother, but she has passed on, and my cottage has been burned. I know of Ireland; it is a country by England where pagan sinners dwell.” Mindy turned red. She couldn’t believe she just insulted her new friend, but he just laughed.
“Well, there are many pagan sinners in Ireland, that’s for sure, but mostly the people in Ireland are good folks, willing to help anyone out. Of course historically, we are rebels, but here in 2010, we are peace lovin people.” Paul explained to Mindy conversationally, not even noticing her face paling.
“Sir…Paul…what did thou say? 2010? What doest thou mean…2010?” Mindy asked.
“2010…the year?” Paul looked at her questionably.
“Oh…yes …of course…2010…the year…Thy thought thou said something else.” Mindy’s head was spinning. 2010!!!! She really did it this time! She spelled herself right into the future! Oh dear Lord! Now what was she to do?

Mindy took some deep breaths to control her panic. She was NEVER going to open that book again. Well, except maybe to get back where she belonged.
“I must go.” Mindy stood up quickly.
“Mindy wait!” Paul put his hand on her arm. “After that knock on your head, why don’t you just lie down for a few hours. Our bus is parked here for a bit yet and we’re not going anywhere, and we can contact someone for you and let them know you’re ok.”
“There is no one to contact, Paul. I know no one here.” Mindy started walking toward the door.
Paul started to panic. She was walking out of his life. He had to stop her; he just wasn’t ready to let her leave.
“Mindy please….just stop! Hold on a minute! You obviously need some rest; I would feel so much better if you would just rest here. I promise you that you will be safe.” Paul gave her his best innocent look.
Mindy paused. Oh good Lord she was tired. She couldn’t remember the last time she had any sleep. Her friend Captain jumped down and started rubbing herself against Mindy’s legs. Mindy bent down to pet her friend.
“What do you think Captain? What should I do?” She whispered to the cat. Captain immediately jumped up on the back of the couch and lay down, stretching out with a big yawn. Trusting her cat’s instinct, Mindy turned toward Paul.
“I thank thee for the kindness. I believe I shall rest for a small while.” Mindy lay down on the couch. Paul came over and pulled a blanket over her. Captain jumped down and curled herself along Mindy’s side. “Sleep well my friend.” Paul whispered and moved his hand over her hair.
Mindy hugged her cat to her.
“Captain…what are we going to do? How are we to survive here?” Mindy’s eyes watered up. She finally closed her eyes and slept.
Mindy woke up to a cat walking across her face and a murmur of men’s voices. The first thing she noticed was it was dark outside. She had slept the day away. Oh no! Now she would have to wander in the darkness. Gah! How could she be so stupid!
Mindy heard Paul say her name. She lay there and listened to the conversation.
“Her name is Mindy. I can only guess she’s been living in the woods by herself with her grandmother. And now she’s alone. She says her cabin burned down. I’ve never seen someone so innocent. Good God, she wanted to go outside to go to the bathroom. I tell you guys, I just don’t feel comfortable letting her go out on her own.” Paul explained to the lads.
“We can’t let the puir lass wander around alone.” George commented.
“Maybe we should call Sharon and see what she can do.” Ryan suggested, “She knows so many people, I sure she can help.”
“Why can’t she stay on the bus with us? We could use someone to clean up around here and I would love someone to cook for us.” Damian suggested.
“Yeah whelp…as usual you’re thinkin with your stomach. And by the way, I didn’t appreciate the toilet paper stunt.” Keith thumped Damian in the head.
“What you talkin about? What toilet paper stunt?” Damian pushed Keith back.
“Like you don’t know what I’m talkin about.” Keith pushed Damian back.
“Lads!” George interrupted the potential argument. “Now is not the time!”
With one last push, Keith turned toward the group.
“Well, we know a lot of people too. We’ll be in Boston tomorrow night. Who do we know in Boston that can help us out?” Neil suggested.
“My friend Meagan and her mom are coming to the concert tomorrow night. I know her pretty well. I’m sure she would help us if we asked.” Damian suggested.
Paul knew Meagan’s mom and liked her. He knew she lived somewhere in the Midwest, in the middle of the country. He was starting to like this idea.
“When can you ask her?” Paul asked.
“She should already be in her hotel. I could send her a message on the computer if you want me to.” Damian told Paul.
“Yeah Damian. Set up a time we can meet up with them before the show, would ya?” Paul looked at his buddies. “Thanks everyone...you lads have been a great help.”
“Geez Paul. We like the girl, we don’t want to see her hurt. Anyway, she hasn’t shown me how to fly yet.” Damian replied.
Keith smacked him in the head again.
“How many times do I have to tell you, she doesn’t know how to fly!”

For those who sit and waits patiently. ;D
Thunder was heard outside the bus. The wind came up and shook the bus. Mindy walked toward the cluster of men, head held high, shoulders back and her eyes seemed to burn with fire. All the men stopped what they were saying amazed at the sight of a very angry Mindy walking toward them.
“How dare thee sirs! How dare thee discuss me like I was just a child to be taken care of. I have been taking care of thyself and my grandmother for many years. I do not need you to take care of me. I did not escape a horrible marriage to a slimy toad of a man, just so I could come here and be told what to do by you! Now I shall leave your presence and you can go about taking care of yourselves! Good day sirs!” Mindy turned and stomped toward the entrance of the bus. She was so angry; she waved her hand at the door. The door opened with a slam…then slamming shut behind her. The thunder stopped and the wind calmed. The men stood stunned. Paul stood there, grinning like an idiot.
“What a woman! I think I’m in love!” With that remark, he stalked up to the door to follow Mindy out into the dark night. Captain raced to the door ahead of him and headed outside. Paul decided to follow the cat, for he knew that the cat would lead him to Mindy.
“There goes…a very brave man.” Damian commented.
“Or a complete idiot.” Keith commented too.
George laughed out loud.
“Boys…I think we’re in for quite a show!” He laughed harder. “Let’s head to bed. The bus is leaving in the morning and it’s going to be quite a day.”
“It should be interesting to see if she comes back with him.” Ryan laughed. “Or she may bury him in a shallow grave out there.”
“Och…I don’t think our Mindy is a murderer. But she is definitely going to give him a time of it.” George smiled and shook his head.
Meanwhile, Paul followed the little cat into the woods. He finally saw her, sitting on the ground, her back up against a tree. Captain ran up to her and jumped in her lap. She pulled the little cat close to her, rubbing her face into the little cat’s fur.
“Are you still angry with me?” Paul said quietly.
“Yes…no…I don’t know yet.” Mindy said quietly. “I am sorry I lost my temper.”
“I don’t blame you. We were butting into your life. I’m sorry.” He sat next to her. “So…you don’t need or want our help.”
“I am used to taking care of myself, and I am not stupid nor a child.” Mindy sighed, “To tell you the truth, I do not know what to do. I know no one here but you and your lads and I am not sure I can go back home.”
“There is a woman I know, who has a daughter named Meagan. She is very nice but lives pretty far from here. I would like for you to go stay with her while we’re on the tour. Just until you decide what to do, you don’t have to stay with her if you don’t want to. You can decide for yourself when you meet them. What do you say? I will come and visit you when I get a break. Please…just think about it Mindy.” Paul put his arm around her and pulled her to him. He felt her sigh.
“Ok…I shall meet thy friends.”
“Good Mindy. I’m glad.” He pulled her chin up and lightly kissed her lips. She smiled softly.
“So…thee sings songs? Is thee good? Can thee sing a song for me?” she asked him.
“Of course I’m good. I’m the best. There is no one better than me.” Paul smiled.
“Thy thinks too much of thyself, good sir. Tis a sin of vanity I believe.” She teased.
“HA! Non-believer! I will show you. I will sing and bring tears to your eyes with the wonder of my voice…what would you like me to sing my lady?” He smiled.
“I shall hope I do not cry tears of pain that your voice brings me. But I choose…one of God’s songs, since only he can forgive your sin of vanity.” She laughed at him.
“Prepare to be amazed, beautiful lady.” Paul cleared his throat. Hummed a little...did a couple of voice exercises…cleared his throat again…all for show before he started singing.
“Indeed sir…I am amazed people pay thee money for that.” Mindy laughed.
“Just wait…I’m exercising my vocal chords. My vocal chords are a fine instrument that must be tuned.” He cleared his throat again..making a big show of it, which made Mindy laugh harder. Finally, Paul started singing “Amazing Grace”. All laughter stopped as the echo of his voice filled the woods. When he was done, all was quiet. Mindy stared at him in amazement.
“Tis wondrous…” She framed his face with both hands and kissed him right on the lips. Paul…not letting the opportunity go by, took advantage, pulling her closer and deepening the kiss. Finally, Mindy pulled away.
“I thank thee for thy gift. Thy voice is wondrous, Paul and I am sorry for making light of it. Please forgive me.” She said with all seriousness.
“Mindy, there is nothing to be sorry for…after all, I got a kiss out of it didn’t I?” Paul smiled. Mindy turned red and smacked his arm.
“Thou is a devil with an angel voice.”
“Mindy…your right about that. So let’s head back to the bus… and let’s get you out of that dress.” Paul told her.
“Nay sir…thou won’t be getting this dress off me!” Mindy said firmly.
“You can put on a pair of my sweats and a T-shirt. I told you, you’re safe in my care, and I meant it. Remember?”
“What are these sweats and T-shirt?” Mindy asked him.
Paul laughed.
“Oh, you’ll see…they will become your favorite thing to wear. Trust me.”
“OK…I shall try them.”
The pair held hands and headed back to the bus.

Sorry this took so long. Hope you like. ;D
“AAAHHHH!!!! HOLY CRAP!!!!”
THUMP
Keith laughs hysterically.
Mindy woke up the next morning to the loud laughter of Keith, and Captain walking across her face and jumping down to investigate. She felt movement. The bus was moving now. Sitting up quickly, she looked out the window. The bus was moving so fast! She lay back down and tried not to think of it. This was the future, of course the vehicles would go very fast. She would prefer to think about last night anyway. She smiled when she thought about it and snuggled deeper into the couch.
When Paul and she had gotten back to the bus, he went to get her the sweats and t-shirt he promised. She took them into the privy and undressed, first pulling on the t-shirt. She liked the t-shirt because it smelled of him, but it showed her arms and she felt half dressed. At least it hung down to her knees. Sweats, she found out, consisted of a pair of soft men’s trousers. Being a woman, she had never worn men’s trousers before. She slipped them on but the waist was too big. Paul seemed very slim, how could he wear these trousers without falling down? She held her pants up as she opened the door. Paul stood waiting for her. She liked his smile and the light of interest she saw in his eyes. Never had a man looked at her like she was a delicious dessert that he would like to eat up.
“Thou must be very fat to fit in these sweats.”
“You’re supposed to tie the waist, there is a string there. Here let me do that for you.” He lifted her shirt so he could tie the pants. She stepped back quickly, both hands let go of the pants to hold him off, sending the pants to the floor, and Mindy standing in a t-shirt and pantaloons.
“Mindy…what are you wearing!” Laughing, Paul bent to help her pull up the sweats at the same time Mindy did. Mindy quickly pulled the pants back up.
“Sir…you must not speak of a lady’s undergarments, tis impolite!” Embarrassed and holding onto her sweats she started for the privy.
“Mindy…hold on...I’m sorry.” Still chuckling , he explained. “Now…you take ALL your clothes off and then you put these clothes on. Inside the waistband of the sweats is a drawstring that you pull tight and tie so your pants don’t fall down. Okay? When you are done, you can hand me your old clothes and we will tuck them away to be washed.” He gave her his most innocent smile, the one that always worked with his mum.
She looked at him suspiciously. No one could look that innocent and not be guilty. She gave him a firm glare to let him know she was on to him, then went back into the privy to fix the sweats. Naked under the clothes, tis unseemly! Did he think she was born yesterday! She quickly found the drawstring and tied the pants leaving her pantaloons on.
When she came back out, he was waiting with a smile. “Does thee have a brush or comb I may borrow for my hair?” Mindy asked when she handed him her neatly folded dress.
“Of course, I’ll get you one.” He went to the back of the bus taking her dress, while Mindy headed back up and sat on her couch. While waiting, she pulled off her cap and unpinned her hair, letting the large mass of brown hair loose.
“Sweet Mary, mother of God!” She heard Paul say. She turned expecting him to be praying. But he just stood staring at her in stunned disbelief. She looked so different sitting there with extremely long hair falling down around her face.
“Sir…tis impolite to stare,” She blushed, “Did thou find a brush?”
“Mindy...your hair is…” he cleared his throat, “so long.” Long, yes he longed alright. He longed to grab Mindy up and kiss her senseless, since that’s exactly how he felt; senseless. He handed her the brush and turned away.
“I just realized that you slept through dinner. Would you like me to heat you up some leftovers?” Paul looked in the little fridge for the leftover Chinese food that Keith and Ryan had run into town for.
“And what are leftovers? Forgive me but, that does not sound very good.” Mindy started the long task of brushing out her hair.
“Well tonight leftovers are Chinese food and they are very good.” He pulled out the little cartons and dumped the ingredients out on a plate.
“You went to China for food?” She asked amazed.
“No, Keith and Ryan went to a Chinese take-out…no wait.” Paul was beginning to recognize the look in her face when she didn’t understand something. He scratched his head and thought about his words. “Okay…Chinese people came here from China, opened a restaurant here and people go and buy the food and bring it home to eat. It’s called Chinese take-out and it’s very good.”
“I would very much like to try it, but a fruit and nut sandwich and cold soup would be good too.” Paul looked at her strangely then realized she was talking about the peanut butter and jelly sandwich and cereal she ate for lunch.
:”Let’s see how you like this first.” He popped the plate into the microwave, pressed the timer and pushed start. She stopped brushing her hair and jumped up to watch.
“What is this?” Mindy looked in the window of the microwave at the food, circling.
“It’s a microwave oven, it heats the food quickly. I couldn’t…” He became distracted by her hair…he ran his hand down the length, grabbing a handful, lifting it up and letting it fall. It was thick and full, the length far below her waist.
“Could I help you brush out your hair while you eat?” He asked her.
“If thou wishes, but tis very knotted right now. Thou may regret volunteering.” Just then the timer went off.
“Go sit at the table and I’ll bring your food.” Mindy sat and Paul quickly grabbed the hot plate from the microwave and set it down in front of her. He handed her a plastic fork that came with the take-out. He smiled to himself as he watched her check the fork out, inspecting it closely in wonderment. Paul wondered what exactly was going on in Mindy’s mind. She was like a child looking at the world. It made him look at things in a whole new light, things that he always took for granted. He grabbed the brush and started working on her hair.
“Now usually you eat Chinese take-out right out of the carton, when it’s still hot.” He explained as he worked on a particularly large snarl. “It’s fun to eat with someone. You just eat out of each other’s cartons.” He watched her pick through and taste everything.
“Leftovers are very good. I like them.” She said. “Would thou like a bite?”
Mindy held the fork up with food on it, and Paul took the bite.
“Yes very good.” He brushed her hair, getting out all the tangles. “Now we are going to have to discuss the way you talk. Thee and thou aren’t used too often anymore. If you don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb, you might try using” you” instead.”
“I shall think on it. I would not like to look like a sore thumb. Tell me about the people who shall take me in.” She asked him.
“Well, Meagan is very sweet and is a friend of Damian’s, and her mother is very nice too. I like them, they are good people. Of course, all the thunderheads are good people. You’re going to love them, and they will love you.” Paul explained and he pulled the brush through her hair. Mindy loved it. She couldn’t remember the last time someone had brushed her hair. It was very mesmerizing. Feeling full and feeling the brush pulling through her hair, she almost fell asleep.
“Mindy, will you ever tell me your story?” Paul asked her.
“Perhaps someday, Paul. Are thou…you…almost done?”
“Would you like it braided my lady?” He started braiding the hair in one long braid down her back.
“Why thank you sir, thou…you would make an excellent ladies maid.” She teased him.
“Payment…Mindy.” He lifted her chin and lightly kissed her. “I guess it’s bed-time.” He pulled her up and walked her to the couch. She lay down and he tucked the blankets around her.
“Good-night, Mindy.” He said, running his finger down the side of her face.
“Good-night, Paul” She smiled up at him. “Thank- you very much for taking care of me. I shall see you tomorrow.”
“Yes, I pray you are not just a dream.” He smiled and walked away, shutting off the lights as he headed to bed.
Mindy felt Captain jump up on the couch. Mindy hugged the cat to her.
“What do you think, Captain. Can we be happy here?” The cat started purring. Yes, she was very happy indeed.

Thanks for the wait everyone...been a very busy week but here's an update for you.
Thump! Hysterical laughing!!! More thumping.
“You boys need to get dressed, there’s a female on the bus.” Paul told the bundle of arms and legs on the floor as he walked by. As he walked away from the lads wrestling on the floor, he heard another thump, shook his head, and smiled. He headed to the front of the bus, looking to see if Mindy was up yet. He was just in time to see her head rise up and her feet hit the floor. She stretched her arms up in a large yawn. Captain ran around him from the back of the bus and jumped up in her lap. She hugged the cat to her and whispered in the cat’s ear. Paul was feeling a bit jealous…wishing he were the cat right now, getting all the hugs and whispers. Sighing and shaking his head, he knew he was in trouble, wishing he were a cat….he had it bad for this girl. He headed toward Mindy.
“Good morning, Angel. Did you sleep well?” He asked.
“Very well, my thanks Paul, and how was th… yooouur rest?” Mindy smiled wide, glad to see Paul. She stood and turned to him just as the bus was taking a large curve in the road. Unused to the movement, Mindy pitched sideways. Paul stepped up and caught her to him, steadying both of them before they fell.
“Whoa, don’t have your bus legs, I guess. You okay??” He smiled down at her, happy to have her in his arms.
“I’m fine, thank you again, sir.” Mindy was more than fine. Standing there, pulled up tight to Paul, his arms wrapped tightly around her, that is a place she would gladly stay forever. “And again, I have to ask…how was your rest?”
“Slept like a log…even through George’s snoring.” Actually he had barely slept at all. He lay in his bunk, thinking of her…remembering her hair, her eyes, her lips, her smile. When he wasn’t thinking of her, he was dreaming of her. His dreams had been strange and disjointed. He remembered he had dreamed he had seen her in a small cabin. She was wearing the dress and cap that he had found her in…she seemed to be packing for a trip. She looked very scared as she packed her things in a suitcase. Next he saw her, standing on a rock. Her hands were up in the air and the wind blew her dress around her. It looked like a lake behind her….it’s waves climbed high behind her, yet she did not get wet. Next thing he knew…she was flying over everybody’s head. It was quite a dream. When he awoke, he remembered seeing her flying into the side of the bus. He’d forgotten about that. Surely he didn’t see her fly, it just looked like that. She must have been riding a bike or something.
“We’re almost to Boston, I was thinkin I could borrow some clothes from one of the girls for you, and then we can head out to get you some clothes of your own. How would you like that?” He asked as he sat her back down on the couch. He already missed her being in his arms. He left one arm around her shoulder.
“Oh, I like the t-shirts and sweats! These will be fine, I have never slept so well.”
“Mindy, you can’t have only one pair of sweats and one t-shirt.”
“And my dress. I can wear the dress in the day…and the other at night.” Mindy looked up at him.
“Well…yes…there is the dress too. But we really need to get you a few other things. Only one dress is just not going to do.”
“I thank you Paul…I would very much like another dress and some more sweats.” She threw her arms around him and hugged him.
“Well there are other clothes we need for you too. Judging by what you were wearing under the dress.” He looked embarrassed and cleared his throat. “We’ll get you everything you need. We’ll be at the venue in a few minutes. The other buses should be there already. We had bus trouble, that’s why we were stopped where we were when we found you.”
“What is a venue?” She asked.
“It’s where we are going to sing tonight. Meagan and her friend Kristine are coming to the bus to help us shop. Hey look out the window, that’s Boston now.” He pointed out the window to all the buildings. Mindy looked out the window amazed. So many people in one place! Where did all these people come from! There were many vehicles going very fast, and large buildings, and so many things she couldn’t even describe what she was seeing.
“Tis wondrous!” She said as she watched buildings fly by.
“You say that a lot. Have you never been out of the woods Mindy?” He asked her.
“No…I lived my whole life in the woods.” She answered looking down and not in his face. She didn’t like telling him a lie, it felt wrong. But, she reasoned, it wasn’t a lie so she wasn’t sinning. Still, it felt wrong, her stomach hurt.
“There’s so much to see out there…I would like to show it to you? Just stay by me and together we will do and see everything you wish.” He put his arm around her. “That over there is Fenway Park, where the Red Sox play.”
Mindy looked at where he was pointing but the confusion must have shown on her face.
“Sir you tease…how can socks play? Do witches make them dance around?” Mindy asked.
Paul laughed loud and hard.
“Mindy, there are no such things as witches….well I guess I have known a few witches in my time that made me dance to their tune, but I’m talking about a baseball team.” At the look of her confusion he gave up. “Never mind, I’ll take you to a baseball game sometime. Hey look…we’re at the venue. Let’s see if we can get you something to wear.”
The bus pulled to a stop behind a large building. There were other buses parked there and many people moving things from a large vehicle into the building. Mindy watched the men work while she waited for Paul.
“Hey Minds…mind if I come along on the shopping trip?” Damian asked as he walked toward her. “My friend Meagan will be going with you and I haven’t seen her in awhile.”
“You are welcome, Damian.” She smiled at him and he stopped in his tracks.
“Wow! You look different without the dress and hat thingy on your head. Really pretty! Um…well not that way….um..you didn’t really fly did you?” His face was really red and Mindy took pity on him.
“Shhh…don’t tell anyone….but I’m a witch.” She whispered to him conspiringly.
“HAHA…yeah right…that’s quite a corker.” He laughed. “This is going to be fun, taking you shoppin.”
Paul came back on the bus with a pair of blue jeans, a long sleeved t-shirt, socks and a pair of tennis shoes and handed the pile to Mindy.
“There ya be..go try them on. I guessed at your size hope they fit ok.” He turned to Damian, “I had a hard time explaining why I needed women’s clothes..took some crap from the ladies. Meagan and Kristine are out there waiting already.”
Damian smiled and ran to the door.
“I’ll see you in a bit. Mindy…I’ll keep our little secret.” He laughed and headed out the door.
“What little secret is that?” Paul asked her looking a bit confused.
“Oh…nothing….just something between Damian and me. So…I shall head to the privy and try on these clothes.” She looked down at the pile. There was no dress in there, just men’s clothes. Did women dress as men here? This is very odd, but Mindy decided to go along with it. She headed to the bathroom to put on the clothes.

In the bathroom, she pulled off the sweats and t-shirt, and pulled on her blue jeans which were too tight for her liking. She decided that they wouldn’t fit with her underwear still on. Now what to do? Well, the only thing to do was to take the underwear off or cut the legs them somehow. “Paul…does thee have a sharp knife?” She asked through the door.
“Mindy…why do you need a sharp knife to get dressed?” He answered her.
“I cannot say…tis indecent.” She told him firmly. She heard him muttering and walking away. Then he knocked on the door. She opened it and took the small knife from him.
“My thanks, sir” She politely said, then slammed the door shut again. She got undressed and cut the legs off the long underwear she wore. The knife slipped and sliced her hand, making tears come to her eyes. Quickly she shoved her hand under the water at the pump. Looking at the cut, she became concerned. The cut was pretty bad, she would need to stitch it up. She then tore the legs of the underwear into strips and tied a strip around her hand. She wondered if there were any herbs in the bus to press into the cut. Pulling on the men’s trousers, she figured the zipper, which she thought wondrous, and buttoned the trousers up. Next she pulled the red t-shirt over her head, pulled on the socks and the shoes. The whole outfit was indecent. Did women really dress like this? The legs of the trousers were tight to her skin, showing every curve she had. And the t-shirt was tight across her bosom. She could not possibly wear this in public.
“I cannot go shopping today, Paul. I will not wear these clothes where people can see me. Tis indecent.” She told him through the door.
“What do you mean? Everyone wears blue jeans and t-shirts. Now come on out and let me have a look at you.” He told her through the door. “No…I will be shamed.” She said.
“Mindy, let me be the judge of that. Now come out and let’s have a look, okay?” Paul said nicely.
Mindy opened the door and let him peek in. His head rounded the door as he looked her over.
“You look fine. Just like every other woman I know.” Paul lied through his teeth. She was perfect. Nicely rounded shape, just the way he liked his shapes, encased tightly in blue jeans. His eyes just about popped from his head. But he didn’t want Mindy to know this or he would never get her out of the bathroom.
“Are you positive that women dress in trousers?” She asked, her face flaming red.
“Yes…of course…you look like every other woman.” He told her. “In fact the clothes fit perfectly.”
“Okay, I shall trust you.” Mindy walked out of the bathroom just as Keith was walking to the front of the bus, on his way out.
“YOWSERS!!! Mindy you’re smoking!!” He said and he squeezed by her, checking her out from head to toe.
“Oh no! I am on fire?” She looked down at her clothes expecting to see smoke.
“He means you look very nice…don’t you Keith?” Paul corrected Keith.
“Yeah Mindy…your looking hot.” Keith replied. “Lovin the new look!”
“I am not feeling hot Keith, I feel a bit cool, but I thank you for the kind words.” She told him, blushing.
“So let’s go, Mindy.” Paul took her arm and led her to the door.
“But I must get Captain.” She stopped and looked around.
“Sorry, Captain can’t go shopping. They don’t let cats in the stores.” Paul took her arm again.
“No…I do not go anywhere without Captain.” She told him adamantly.
“Mindy, Captain will be just fine on the bus..now come on.”
But Mindy wouldn’t move. “I’ll take care of the wee cat for you lass.” George said behind her. “I promise she will have a lovely time, and be fine. I’ll take fine care of her.” George held Captain in his arms and Captain seemed very content to be there. “Ryan can help me, seems the cat can’t decide who she like better, meself or Ryan. She’s always curling up and purring on one of us.”
“She loves me the best.” Neil come up and petted the cat. “She slept with me most of the night.”
“No…the wee thing slept with me.” Ryan said from behind Neil. “Kept me up half the night purring and sleeping under my chin.
“I believe you are both wrong, because she slept with me all night.” George put in.
Mindy went up to the cat and whispered something in her ear. The cat seemed to wink at her and yawn widely. Mindy smiled knowing her friend would be in good hands.
“Okay then, I am ready to shop.” She followed Paul out the bus door. She was ready to go on a grand adventure in the large town of Boston.
