“I can’t believe you talked me into this dress!!!” Mindy tugged up the front of her strapless wedding gown. “It’s indecent!”
“Now Mindy!!! You look gorgeous!!! Stop messing with your hair!!!” Tam pulled Mindy’s hand away from her hair just as she was about to mess with a perfect curl.
“I swear!!! I’m going to tie you up if you don’t stop fidgeting!”
“I don’t understand this!!! Why do we do all this? Why not just get married and be done with it???” Mindy looked in the mirror at her made up face. She hardly recognized herself. Would Paul even recognize her? Two whole months!!! It was two whole months since she saw his face last. Knowing he was so close was making her crazy. She wanted to see him now!
There was a knock at the door. Tam ran to let in Meagan and Kristine.
“Thank God you’re here…you can help me keep her dressed now. Mindy!! Leave your dress alone!!!” Tam yelled at Mindy.
“Have you two seen Paul? Is he here yet?” Mindy asked the newcomers.
“Paul? No…I haven’t seen Paul.” Kristine looked at Meagan. “Have you seen Paul?”
“No…I haven’t seen him anywhere.” Meagan shook her head. When Mindy rose and ran toward the door…both women grabbed her arms.
“Kidding Mindy!!! Come on…of course we saw Paul. He looks handsome and sexy and we both wanted him to run away and marry us…but he refused because he said he has someone special waiting in the wings for him. That must be you!!” Meagan laughed.
“Oh my GOSH!! Mindy!!! You’re STUNNING!!!” Meagan walked around Mindy. “I think I’m gonna cry!!”
Mindy stood before the girls in a strapless sky blue wedding dress that was shot through with silver thread that made the dress sparkle. The dress fit Mindy like a glove and she never looked more beautiful. In true Irish tradition, Mindy’s hair was braided in intricate braids mixed with curls. All that awaited was a bridal veil made out of Irish lace.
“How did Paul look? Did he look like he was eating? Did he ask about me?” Mindy asked.
“Mindy!! Calm down. I saw him…gave him a hug….asked him how the hottest tenor in Ireland was doing…and he was looking incredibly handsome….in his kilt…oh, by the way, the florist arrived with the flowers.” Kristine told Tam.
“Why didn’t you tell me in the first place!!” Tam reached for the door. “Kristine, come and help me….Meagan….you’re in charge of keeping our bride company. Don’t let her ruin her hair or makeup.”
“Yes ma’am.” Meagan gave her a salute. It seemed that they had just left when there was a tap on the door. Meagan cracked the door to answer and there stood Paul.
“Paul!!! Go away! You know you can’t come in here.” Meagan said through the crack.
“No…Damian sent me up to tell you he needs to talk to you.” Paul explained.
“Nice try….butttttttt….no.” Meagan said.
“Mindy!! Can you hear me?” Paul said through the door.
“Paul! “ Mindy said through the door.
“Soon love….we are going to be together forever…in less than an hour.” Paul said. “I am never going to be separated from you ever again. I love you.”
“I love you more.” Mindy said.
“Paul!! How’d you get away from us!!” Mindy heard Damian say.
“You will never be as quick as I am wee Damian!! Try to keep up huh?” Paul said. “Goodbye love…I will see you in a mere 30 minutes.”
“Paul!!! Get out of here!!” Mindy heard Tam yell.
“I’m leaving…I’m leaving.” Paul said.
Minutes later, Tam entered the room carrying the bridal bouquet of yellow roses, with a sprig of lavender in it for luck. Captain and Kristine followed her in with the bridesmaid’s bouquets of blue and yellow.
“I just can’t get used to the idea of me wearing white and the bride wearing blue. I swear..I’m getting married today instead of Mindy.” Kristine commented. She looked down at her bridesmaid dress of white with a blue sash at the waist.
“Well I think it’s a lovely idea.” Meagan said. “Hi Captain.” Captain smiled shyly at Meagan and moved to quickly to Mindy’s side. Ever since Mindy came back, Captain didn’t like to be away from her for very long. Mindy always hugged her or held her hand. The only other person Captain would stay with for any period of time, was Neil.
“Hello my friend.” Mindy hugged her. “It’s time to put on your dress. Will you let Tam and the girls help you?” At Captain’s nod, the girls began to help her on with her dress. Afterwards, Mindy brushed out Captain’s long black hair and let it flow down her back.
Finally…a knock at the door.
“Are you lovely lasses ready? I believe there is a wedding about to begin.” George said through the door.
Kristine opened the door to admit George.
“I am surrounded by beauty! Hurry! Shut the door so I can keep you all to myself.” George said.
“And here I thought you already had a beauty of your own…you greedy man!” Mindy smiled. “I need help with my veil and have no married woman to help me. Will you help George?”
“First I’ve been instructed to give you some luck of the Irish.” George said. He pulled a green garter out of his pocket. “This is a special gift from Ryan, said to give this to you because you were going to need all the luck you could get.”
“And Keith sent his own bit of luck.” George then pulled a bottle of Jamison from his other pocket. “He said that you girls would need a shot of this for luck. The lads have been taking a few shots of luck for themselves.”
“I never heard of that tradition before.” Meagan said.
“Me either…but if it’s tradition, let’s do it.” Kristine said.
The girls slipped the lucky garter on Mindy’s leg, while George proceeded to fill glasses with the fine Irish whiskey.
“Slainte!” George said. The girls clicked their glasses and downed the whiskey.
“There…now I have all the luck I need…so are we ready?” Mindy said almost choking as the whiskey burned a path down to her stomach. She did like the warm feeling she got in her stomach. Already she felt her nerves start to calm.
“You forgot your shoes.” Tam said. She grabbed the shoes from the box and slipped them on Mindy’s feet making her 2 inches taller. Mindy’s ankles wobbled a little. George slipped the veil over her head and kissed her forehead.
“You are beautiful, Mindy. And you make a beautiful bride.” He smiled. “Now, let’s go see your future husband…shall we?”
The group walked down the stairs that led to the back of the church. Each of the girls hugged Mindy then stood in line to walk down the aisle. As if by silent command, the organ music changed to the bridal march and the girls started to walk. Mindy’s heart flipped. This was really happening. She never thought she could be so happy. Finally it was her turn. George took her hand and tucked it into his arm…patting it softly.
“Ready lass?” At Mindy’s nod, they stood at the door. Everyone in the church stood and turned toward her. She only had eyes for the man waiting for her. He stood there, in front of her, with a large smile on his face. Mindy took her first step, then slowly walked toward Paul. About halfway down the aisle, Mindy did the unthinkable. She stepped, and her ankle wobbled the other way. She started to fall sideways. George grabbed her arm to keep her from falling. Murmuring could be heard as Mindy yelped from the pain.
Suddenly, Paul was in front of her. He kneeled down, slipped off a shoe and threw it behind him. Keith reached out and caught it one-handed. Paul then slipped the other offending shoe off and threw it over his shoulder. Damian caught that one before it sailed into the large bouquet of flowers at the altar. Paul gently rubbed her feet.
“My hero.” Mindy smiled.
“Tis my pleasure my lady.” Paul smiled and stood. He scooped Mindy up in his arms and carried her the rest of the way to the altar to the laughter of the audience.
“Of course I expect my boon.” Paul said.
“Your boon is to be my husband for the rest of your life.” Mindy smiled.
“And a lucky man I am!” Paul smiled.
“It sounds like you have been drinking a few too many lucky shots of whiskey, sir.” Mindy laughed.
“Drunk on love, my sweet. Now…..let’s get married and we will talk more about my boon.” Mindy laughed out loud when Paul set her down.
The priest frowned at Paul, who looked very piously back.
“In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.” The priest began.
“Amen.” Everyone responded.
The wedding mass began. To Mindy it seemed to fly by. Ryan and Sam sang a beautiful song together. Mindy watched them sing….and saw something. Was it the spark in Ryan’s eye when he looked at Sam while singing; the certain smile on Sam’s face when she glanced shyly Ryan’s way. Their voices blended perfectly; Sam’s high soprano to Ryan’s tenor.
Paul leaned over during the song and whispered in Mindy’s ear.
“By the way….you’re beautiful.” He whispered and squeezed her hand. “and I love you.”
“I love you more.” Mindy squeezed his hand back.
Finally it was time for the vows and the ring exchange. Paul and Mindy both repeated their vows before all. Both remembered the first vows they spoke in the burning church and tears began to fall. The last time, they thought that it was for a short time. This time they knew that it was forever.
“You may kiss the bride.” The priest finally announced.
Paul took Mindy's face in his hands and kissed her throughly.
Damian carefully stepped back and walked behind the large vase of flowers. Suddenly from behind the flowers came an explosion of flapping wings as pigeons were let out of a cage. Screams could be heard from the many women in the crowd as the birds flew over their heads.
Paul, seeing the birds, started laughing hysterically.
“What were you thinking you eejit!!!” Keith yelled and popped Damian in the head.
“Hey!!! I thought it would be romantic!!! You know…doves.” Damian said. “And don’t call me a eejit!!” Damian pushed Keith back.
“Yeah…I’ll call you an eejit!! Because that is the stupidest thing you have ever done! Those are pigeons…not doves. Don’t you know the difference?” Keith pushed Damian back.
Mindy looked at the craziness before her and made a decision before things got out of hand. She closed her eyes and lifted her hands. Suddenly…the church was filled with feathers that seemed to float down from the ceiling like soft snow. Captain seemed entranced and began to bat at the feathers and trying to catch them with her hands. Ooooos and ahhhhs could be heard from everyone at the beauty of the feathers.
“Great work…Mrs. Byrom.” Paul whispered in her ear.
“Thanks…glad I could help.” Mindy whispered back. Tam smiled and winked at her.
Finally the priest said loudly out loud.
“I would like you all to welcome….Mr. and Mrs. Paul Byrom.” The priest walked over to the altar and genuflected then walked over to Damian and whispered in his ear. Damian turned red and nodded.
Mindy and Paul turned to face the congregation, smiling happily at each other.
Everyone clapped…Damian and Keith whistled. Ryan and Sam yelled. Kristine, Tam and Meagan cried. And Captain chased the feathers with Neil watching her closely.
Paul picked up his bride and carried her down the aisle and out the church door. He quickly walked to the waiting limo. A man stood by and opened the limo door for them.
“Thank you, sir.” Mindy said.
“Hello Ma’am,” The man bowed and smiled.
Mindy climbed into the limo. Paul whispered to the chauffeur and got into the limo behind her. The chauffeur closed the door and ran around the car….just as everyone began to file out of the church. The limo pulled away moved through the Dublin streets.
“Aren’t we supposed to be going to a party?” Mindy asked.
“I just want some alone time with you first.” Paul said. “I told the driver to drive around for awhile before we go.”
Paul pulled her close and held her to him, content to have her in his arms again.
“Now…about my boon….” Paul said. “I thought I would start with this.” Paul held up a pink striped sack that looked familiar. Mindy looked suspiciously at the bag. She took it and opened it and peeked inside.
“Paul!!! Tis indecent!!!” Mindy laughed. “I shan’t wear it!!!”
Paul laughed and whispered in Mindy’s ear. Then he pulled her into his arms and kissed her thoroughly.
AND I DO BELIEVE THIS IS THE END!!!!!!!!!!
