This is my very first story on here! I hope you all like it!
Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, lived a beautiful, smart princess. Princess Chrissy longed for more than ruling the land as her father's only heir.
She spent her days dreaming of a handsome young brave to come take her from her own prison.
One lovely day, Princess Chrissy was wandering about one of the many lush gardens on the grounds. She was lost in another day dream about what it would be like to be allowed to leave the grounds, when a lovely deep male singing voice interrupted her.
Curiosity over came the princess as she began to follow the marvelous sound. Upon rounding the last corner in the fruit orchard, she spotted a young man, not much older than she, lounging under a pear tree, eyes closed and head bobbing side to side with the tempo of the song he was singing.
Chrissy snuck up behind him to get a closer look. This young man was tall and skinny with the most voluminous wavy dark brown hair.
The closer she got, the more intrigued the princess was by the man. He continued to sing such a beautiful song. Chrissy didn't know it but the words were beautiful.
The princess was soon lost in the velvety voice of the young stranger and found herself swaying in time with him.
The stranger soon finished and opened his eyes. Princess Chrissy was so mesmerized by the unclouded true blue beauty of them that she let out a gasp. As soon as he made the noise, she covered her mouth, fearing the stranger had heard her.
Indeed he had. Those amazing eyes roamed the garden surrounding him to find the source of it.
Chrissy fully believed that she was safely out of sight, and she was, until she lost her balance trying to shift her position and attempting to avoid stepping on a dry branch.
The young man heard a loud rustling coming from his left, behind the honeysuckle bushes. He stared, waiting, holding his breath, until the mystery of the rustling was solved.
He didn't have to wait long as Chrissy soon was tumbling through the bushes into plain sight.
The stranger gasped at the sight in front of him. Swiftly he was on his feet and assisting the princess to her feet.
“Are ye arite princess?” he asked.
Chrissy couldn't move. She was shocked at the strong accent the stranger spoke with. “Yes. Thank you for your assistance.” she finally replied to him.
“Can I ask ye, why ye are out 'ere at this time a nigh?” he asked her wearily.
“I was enjoying a stroll around the grounds when I heard you singing. What was that beautiful song?” Chrissy asked, truly curious.
The stranger was unsure how to speak to a member of the royal family but knew it would be rude not to give her an answer at all. “Twas a wee song me ma an da taught me when I was a wee lad.”
Chrissy's eyes widened. “It was the most beautiful thing I've ever heard.”
The stranger blushed. “Thank ye, yer Highness.” he bowed.
“Please, call me Chrissy. And please do not bow to me. That is what everyone says and does in my father's presence. That is not me.” The look on her face told him that she was serious.
“My apologies yer high... Chrissy.” He loved the way her name rolled off of his tongue and sounded so natural.
Chrissy smiled. She, also, liked the way her name sounded when the stranger spoke it. This thought made her realize she did not know the man's name. “What is your name, sir?”
“Tis Damian.” he replied.
“It's wonderful to meet you Damian.” Chrissy replied, offering him her hand to shake.
Damian accepted Chrissy's outstretched hand but instead of pumping it in a shake he kissed the back of it.
Chrissy couldn't help blushing.
Before they knew it, the sun was setting. Chrissy and Damian had just spent the last several hours under the pear tree learning more about each other.
“Chrissy, doncha think ye should be getting' back ta the castle?” Damian asked, sadly.
“I suppose I should.” Chrissy sighed, not wanting to leave. “Can we meet back here tomorrow afternoon?”
Damian grinned broadly and nodded. “Aye. I will come back after I do me gardenin' chores.”
Chrissy was ecstatic. She hadn't been this excited for anything for as long as she could remember. She nearly skipped back to the castle.
For the next several weeks, Chrissy met Damian under the pear tree every afternoon, except for Sundays. Damian had explained on the first Saturday afternoon that they had spent together that to his family Sunday was a day to be spent together.
Chrissy didn't completely understand the tradition. She would go weeks without seeing her parents sometimes. She did respect it though and didn't push the subject. Honestly, part of her was a bit jealous of Damian and his family.
One afternoon, Chrissy's father summoned her to his chamber. She didn't want to go as she was due to meed Damian soon but no one disobeyed the King, not even his own daughter.
Entering his chamber, Chrissy spoke to him. “Father. You wished to see me.”
“Yes my dear.” he answered, not even turning to look at her. “Please, come sit.”
Chrissy obeyed. She was honestly curious as to why her father wished to see her. He hadn't had her summoned in quite a while and even then, she had usually done something which earned her a scolding.
“Christine, tonight a suitor is arriving from the Kingdom of Evanston to ask for your hand in marriage.” Chrissy was shocked at her father's words.
She opened her mouth to protest but closed it at her father's raised hand. He then continued. “The young man's name is Keith. He is the son of a nobleman and would make an excellent husband and King.” her father stopped speaking.
Chrissy knew that as the only child of the King that she had to marry to carry on the royal line. She had always been under the assumption that she would be able to find her own mate and not be forced into an arranged marriage.
Taking a deep breath to calm her anger a bit, she addressed her father. “I don't want an arranged marriage. I thought that I had made that abundantly clear!” With every word she spat at her father, her anger boiled up again.
The King looked at her. He only spoke after Chrissy had finished her rant. He looked at her with nothing but love in his eyes. “Darling. I'm not saying you actually have to marry the man. Just meet him. Please? For your mother and I?”
Chrissy was always as soft for her father as he was for her. Grudgingly she agreed to meet the suitor and left to dress for dinner. She also planned to meed Damian quickly to fill him in on what was happening.
Walking through the gardens was much more difficult in her formal wear but Chrissy was determined to reach her destination, and Damian.
Damian was ready to leave the pear tree where he and the princess would meet. She was uncharacteristically late and Damian was heartbroken.
“Damian!” Chrissy screamed his name when she first caught sight of him.
“Princess!” Damian began running toward her. Before he knew it, Chrissy had enveloped him in a hug and was sobbing on his shoulder.
Damian didn't know how to react but he liked the feeling of Chrissy in his arms. He held her tighter until her sobs slowed.
“I'm so sorry.” she mumbled as she looked at her feet in shame but also to compose herself.
Damian put two fingers under her chin and gently lifted her head until her gaze met his and she was looking directly into those magical blue eyes of his. “Chrissy, there's no need ta be sorry fer anythin'. Now, wat's botherin' ye?”
Chrissy took a deep breath and began to explain about her father and the suitor and how she felt. Before she knew it, Damian had helped her to the protective shade of their pear tree.
Listening to her story, Damian was conflicted. Part of him wanted to tell her that there was no harm in meeting the man, while another part, the part that was in love with the princess, was completely heartbroken.
“Damian, what do I do?” the princess looked at him, pleading for an answer.
“It depends, Miss Chrissy.” Damian began, taking a deep breath. “Are ya in love with anyone else?”
Chrissy didn't quite know how to answer him without giving away her feelings for him. After a bit of thought she answered, choosing her words very carefully. “I am but I am unsure if they feel the same for me.”
Damian's face fell, as did his heart. He was in love with the princess but she was in love with someone else.
Chrissy noticed the change on Damian's face. Did he know that she was secretly in love with him? Did he not feel the same about her?
Damian cleared his throat, at the same time trying to neutralize his expressions. He looked at the amazing, beautiful princess settled next to him, nestling her head into the crook of his arm. “Princess... Chrissy... Have ye told the lad ye love how ye feel?”
Chrissy couldn't speak for fear of revealing all to him so she simply shook her head. Damian's spirit soared knowing that possibly... maybe... she might just love him. “Maybe ye should tell 'im. I bet he feels fer ye too.” he finally told her.
Chrissy's eyes lit up. Maybe Damian did have feelings for her! She decided against telling him right then though, and showed him instead. She lifted her head to look at him. She flecked her gaze between his eyes and his full lips. Then, as quickly as possible she placed a peck on them. “It is you I love Damian.” she declared and ran back to the castle before he could answer.
Dinner was to begin shortly and Chrissy had to rush to freshen up. Thankfully sitting in the grass left no stains on the backside of her dress. Her mother would have had a fit.
Ten minutes before dinner, her father sent a servant to notify her it was time for her grand entrance. Chrissy knew the drill. She walked out of her room and down the hall to the grand staircase. At the top of the stairs she stopped, taking a deep breath and perfecting her posture.
Chrissy took her eyes off of the stairs for a moment to look into the entrance hall, hoping to catch a glimpse of her would be suitor. She recognized her family and the multitude of noblemen and their wives but standing next to her parents was a complete stranger.
He was very handsome. Golden blonde hair that reminded her of the straw that was spun into gold in the fairy tales her nanny used to read to her. He was tall and lean, but not skinny, he appeared fit to her. His eyes were a very beautiful steel blue. They weren't magical like Damain's were though. He smiled up at her and he had the most mesmerizing dimples positioned perfectly in the center of each cheek.
She thought he was a very handsome man but she could never see herself marrying him. She couldn't see herself marrying anyone but Damian. This realization made her stumble a bit and she almost missed the final step. She caught herself just in time, before her suitor had to catch her.
“Christine, darling, this is Keith. He has ridden a long way to meet you.” her mother told her.
Putting on her best princess face, she turned to Keith, held out her hand and curtsied slightly, “Tis very nice to meet you, sir.” She realized that she had spoken a word that Damian often said and had to quiet a giggle. She made a mental note to tell him about it later, if he was still talking to her.
Keith took her hand, kissing the back of the glove, “The pleasure is all mine, Your Highness.” as he bowed to her.
Chrissy couldn't help but be curious about this man. He was very sweet and polite. She had to get to know him better. She couldn't help herself.
Pulling her father to the side, “Daddy, would it be alright if Keith and I went on a walk around one of the flower gardens to talk before dinner?”
The King knew his daughter well enough to know that she was curious about the man, but in the end, she was just humoring himself and her mother. “Very well. Don't be too long though. I will have you summoned for dinner.” he said kissing her on the cheek.
Chrissy led Keith to the rose garden on the opposite side of the estate than the fruit orchard, which Damian worked in. She didn't know what she wanted exactly, just that she did not want the two men crossing paths.... EVER.
They spoke for a bit than began strolling in silence. It was so different than her time with Damian. With him, there was never silence. They always had something to talk about. With Keith, the silence wasn't awkward, but not comfortable. She wasn't sure how to explain it.
Dinner was pleasant enough but Chrissy was wanting it to get over. She had already made up her mind about what she was going to do. She would tell her father after dinner and everyone else involved that needed to know anything in the morning.
Climbing into bed that night, the princess was very unsure of what to do. Her father had given her his support 100% but her mother was another story. When speaking to her, Mother's only comment was, “I cannot have my daughter, a princess, marry a commoner! I won't have it!” Her mother's words would haunt her for the rest of her life.
As she was ready to turn out the light, she swore she heard a soft tap on her door. She stared as it slowly opened.
“Christine? Darling? Are you awake?” her father whispered.
“Yes I am. Come in father.”
The king looked very different in his dressing gown. He wasn't the king at this time of day. He was Chrissy's dad, and that's exactly why he was here. “Baby, I know you're upset about your mother. Please just forgive her. She means well but doesn't know how to show it. She's afraid that your Damian is only interested in you because of your status in the kingdom.”
“No daddy. That's not it at all! I don't even know if he feels the same way for me. I told him yesterday before dinner and before he could respond, I ran away.” Chrissy was close to tears. She didn't know if she could face Damian if he didn't feel the same for her as she did for him.
Her father held her to his chest while she cried. He hated seeing his daughter like this. He had resigned that if she chose to follow her heart that she would have to face the possible heartbreak, if that was the way it turned out. But she would not have to face that alone. He would be there for her, but not to keep her from the hurt. It was part of loving someone.
“Chrissy, you have to find out if he feels the same. If he does, then great. We will talk to your mother together. If not, I will be here for you, but you have to face the heartache head on. It's the best way.” he told her. “But, my beautiful daughter, now is not the time to fret about such things. You need your rest. Tomorrow is another day.” and with that he kissed her atop of the head and left.
Chrissy slowly drifted into a restless sleep, dreaming of pears, honeysuckle, Keith and her mother. It made no sense to her at all even though it was highly amusing.
Going about her morning routine, Chrissy couldn't help but think about that afternoon, when she was to meet Damian, for the first time since she admitted that she was in love with him. It was times like this that she wished she had friends to talk to. She felt all alone in all of this. Thankfully she had her father's support, but he had an entire kingdom to rule over.
Walking the familiar path to their pear tree, Chrissy was scared to death. She hope Damian even showed up.
Rounding the last bend, Chrissy's heart lept at the sight of Damian sitting under the pear tree, head resting on the trunk, eyes closed, singing a different song half to himself and half out loud.
Chrissy could feel the tears slip down her cheeks while she listened to the smooth beauty of Damian's voice. She truly was in love with this man and she committed that no matter what, she was going to be with him.
Damian didn't know what was happening. He was waiting for Chrissy in the normal spot. He had gotten caught up in thinking about what she had declared to him yesterday. The princess was in love with him. He still couldn't believe it.
He found himself getting lost in an old song his da used to sing to his mum and then next thing he knew, he had been thrown to the ground.
Once Damian got his bearings about him, he opened his eyes to find a crying princess had flung herself onto him. He patted her back awkwardly, due to the angle at which he had to maneuver his arm, to try to comfort her. “Chrissy?” he whispered.
She looked at him. The tears flowing from her eyes broke his heart. He never wanted to see her cry. He gently sat her up next to him and took her face in both of his hands, wiping her tears with his thumbs. “Chrissy, I love ye too.” he whispered.
She looked at him in stunned silence. Then he leaned in and kissed her sweetly.
No matter what obstacle came their way, the two of them were determined to be together forever and live happily ever after.
The End!

Steal away, let's steal away,
No reason left to stay.
For me and you,
Let's start anew,
And darlin' steal away.
Let's steal away and chase our dream,
And hope they never find us.
The dreary days, the empty nights,
We'll leave them all behind us.
Steal away, let's steal away,
No reason left to stay.
For me and you,
Let's start anew,
And darlin' steal away.
We'll leave with just our memories,
And make a new beginning.
We have to choose,
To win or lose,
And it's time we started winning.
Steal away, let's steal away,
No reason left to stay.
For me and you,
Let's start anew,
And darlin' steal away.
Steal away, let's steal away,
No reason left to stay.

Rounding the last bend, Chrissy's heart lept at the sight of Damian sitting under the pear tree, head resting on the trunk, eyes closed, singing a different song half to himself and half out loud.
Like a bird without wings
That longs to be flying,
Like a motherless child
Left lonely and crying.
Like a song without words,
Like a world without music,
I wouldn't know what to do
I'd be lost without you
Watchin' over me.
I get so lonely, when you're away
I count ever moment, I wait every day.
Until you're home again
And hug me so tight
That's when I know
Everything is alright.
Like a bird without wings
That longs to be flying,
Like a motherless child
Left lonely and crying.
Like a song without words
Like a world without music,
I wouldn't know what to do
I'd be lost without you
Watchin' over me.
You're my guardian angel
My light and my guide
Your hand on my shoulder
And you by my side.
You make everything beautiful,
You make me complete.
Everything in my world
I lay at your feet...
Like a church with no steeple,
Where a bell never rings.
In a town without people,
Where no voice in the choir ever sings.
If a boat on the ocean
Would be lost with no sail,
Then without your devotion
Surely all that I dreamed of would fail.
Like a song without words
Like a world without music,
I wouldn't know what to do
I'd be lost without you
Watchin' over me
I wouldn't know what to do
I'd be lost without you
Watchin' over me.
That longs to be flying,
Like a motherless child
Left lonely and crying.
Like a song without words,
Like a world without music,
I wouldn't know what to do
I'd be lost without you
Watchin' over me.
I get so lonely, when you're away
I count ever moment, I wait every day.
Until you're home again
And hug me so tight

Like a bird without wings

The End!
