“Out of all the languages I studied, why was French not one of them?” Josie groaned, flipping through a small translator booklet.
“You would think you’d be able to see on the skyline,” Ryan said agitated.
“Aha!” Josie chirped, and then dashed to the nearest Frenchman. “Pouvez….Poavez-vous me….d-diriger vers la tour Eiffel?” she only sounded confident on the last word.
The man curled his lip at her and continued on.
“Tour Eiffel?” she asked again. “Please, tour Eiffel?”
He did not turn.
“Urg!” She threw her book up into the air in frustration.
“You know, Anna,” Ryan said comfortingly, and perhaps, a tad haughtily, “I studied French. Let me try.”
“Here, take the book.” She handed it to him. “See if you can work with it any better than I.”
“Naw, I don’t need the book,” he tapped his noggin. “It’s all up here.”
With that, he moved to the next closest person. “Pouv-ez-vous me dire où je peux trouver les haricots de lima?“
The woman rolled her eyes and pointed to a storefront.
“Grocieries?“ Josie was puzzled.
"Non, lima?" he repeated, and she pointed more frantically before running off.
“That’s odd…Are you sure you’re saying it right?”
“Positive.” Ryan insisted. “Let me try again.”
Now he moved to another man, one with the bow handle mustache. “"Où sont les rhinocéros mauve? "
The man looked at him confusedly before glowering at him. “Americans…” he sneered through his thick French accent before marching off.
“American?” Ryan whimpered. “I’m Irish!”
“I’m the American,” Josie informed the Frenchman.
“Ah…oui, Mamselle…” He took her hand and kissed it.
She giggled. “We’re looking for the Eiffel Tower? We don’t seem to be having much luck finding it.”
“Well, with zis man trying to halp, no wonder you are not.”
Now Ryan glared. “Back off. That’s my fiancé.”
The man looked dishearted. “Ah. Oui.” And tried to move away again.
“Wait!” Josie called. “The Eiffel tower?”
No reply.
“Grand. We’re back where we started.”
“That’s alright with me,” Anna grabbed his hand. “So long as we’re together, I don’t mind one bit.”
