After a moment, Damian spoke, seemingly choosing his words carefully.
'So, ye are adopted? I had no idea, it must have been hard to go through... Why did you not tell me this??'
'Remember the second question you ever asked me? About why I was in America?'
'Yes.. What does that have to do with this conversation?' He seemed puzzled.
'Well, my mum gave me up for adoption when I was a baby because my dad left her, and she couldn't raise me all on her own. My foster parents have raised me all my life, and I appreciate that, but now that I'm here, I feel like I'm finally where I need to be...'
'Woah, that's rough. I'd no idea... But if you already knew you were adopted, what was the thing that made you cry?' Damian asked me quietly.
I sighed, not wanting to tell him what had happened. He deserved to know, but if he knew, would that drive him away? I wrestled with my conscience for a minute, then the better half of me won out in the end.
'I cried because I don't want to go back... I love it here already, everything.. I just want to feel normal, and just as I was starting to feel comfortable, I might get sent back. And.... I would miss you like crazy...' I blushed as I finished my sentence.
'Well, you shouldn't be forced to leave if you don't want to... Nobody should be made to do things that make them unhappy. I'd miss you like crazy, too. I don't like the thought of having you leave me..... Is there anything I can do to help?
'There's not much you can do, unless you happen to have a very good lawyer who specializes in adopted teens and their custody...' I said half-jokingly.
'I don't have a lawyer, but I DO have the Thunderheads on my side.. They're the CT fans. Maybe we could get them and the lads, and Emmett and Conor to help too...' He trailed off.
'How can your fans help me not get deported? I don't understand...'
'We can make a facebook campaign, use twitter, all sorts of stuff. Oh, and the Thunderpub too. I can introduce you to them, they take very well to people in our lives.. They can spread the word in America to government, lots of Thunderheads are American.'
'You don't have to do all that just for me...' I said, embarrassed he would go to such trouble for my sake.
'I know I don't HAVE to, I'm going to do it because I WANT to.'
'Speaking of having to do things, we have to meet our mums at the Millenium Forum to audition girls to sing with you at the concert next week...' I made a face of annoyance.
'Right, let's get a move on.'
Damian helped me to my feet, took my hand in his, and led me to the venue.
'Don't worry, it will all work out Kathy. You'll see.'
'Mhmmm I'll believe it when I see it...'
10 minutes later we arrived at the Forum. As we walked through the doors, I noticed a gaggle of girls lined up waiting to go into the audition room. When they caught sight of Damian, they screamed with excitement. When they saw me... Well, it was more like dissapointment. I heard a few of them whisper about who I was and why I was with him.
Damian led me into the room, past the girls. In the room was a long table, where Janet and my mum were already seated, looking very businesslike.
'Kathy! Come sit over by me, we're about to start the auditions.' said Janet cheerfully.
I walked over to the chair next to her, and sat down. It was a swivelley chair, my favourite. Damian stood behind my chair, his hands on the back of it. My mum started to explain the rules.
'Ok, so each girl will come in, sing about a minute by herself, then she will sing a bit with Damian. After, we will give comments, and the winner will be notified by phone. Got it?'
'Yep, seems pretty straightforward to me.' I replied.
The first girl was brought in. She had black hair, and brown eyes. As soon as she walked in front of our table, she started asking questions.
'Oh my! It's really Damian Mc Ginty! Who is this girl here anyway?'
She was talking about me. I stiffened, and I felt Damian's hands tense up.
'Um, that's not really an appropriate question. Please go ahead and sing your bit.' My mum added.
She began to sing, and she was alright, not the best, not the worst either. When the time came for her to sing with Damian, I felt a sharp pang of jealousy. They were singing a love song. It was 'Need You Now'. As I watched him act like he was in love with her, I nearly lost it. Then they were done, and it was time to comment. Janet went first.
'You've a nice voice, but your pitch was just the tiniest bit off.'
My mum was next.
'That was well done. Work on your eye contact, though.'
Now I had to say something. I racked my brains for something, anything at all.
'Um.. You are a lovely soprano. Good job.'
Then she thanked us, threw a glance at Damian, and left. The next few hours went by in the same manner. Finally, the last girl had gone and I could leave.
'So, how was that?' asked Damian.
'Hard to watch... What are we doing now?'
'Well, its back to my house for Operation Keep Kathy In Ireland. Or OKKII for short..'
'You just made that up.. But that sounds like a plan.' I said.
'Time's a wasting, let's blow this popsicle stand!' He seemed impatient to start on this project.
So with that, we walked the now-familiar route back to the Mc Ginty house. As expected, all the lads, Sharon, Emmett, and Conor were all there watching a footy match.
'Everyone, I need your help. Kathy might be forced to go back to America, and she dosen't want to go. We are going to do a facebook campaign, use twitter, and the Thunderpub. Let's get started, shall we? I need all your help if we are going to get her to be allowed to stay in Ireland.' Damian said.
Everyone qiuckly agreed to go along with Damian's plan.
'Wait a second, Damo. What are we going to start with?' asked Paul.
'The Thunderpub, of course! Since you all have your laptops here anyway.'
Damian grabbed his laptop off the floor, and came and sat next to me on the floor. He pulled up Celtic Thunder's website, and logged in. Then he went to the 'Pub' tab and began typing furiously.
Damian McGinty: Hi everyone. I and the lads, and a friend of mine need all your help. My friend, Kathy is being forced to go back to America, but she wants to stay here in Derry. Will you all help spread the word? Thanks! xx Damo
About 20 messages popped up instantly after he clicked 'save'.
damianisawesome: Yes, we will help Damo! Tell Kathy we are going to help!
irelandisthebest5867: For sure! We got your and Kathy's backs on this one!
luckyclover4202: Can we talk to her for a sec? I will help for sure!
And so on. I was shocked people that had never met me were willing to help. Damian started typing again, just as messages from the rest of the lads popped up.
Neil Byrne: Come on Thunderheads, Kathy is part of the CT family now! Support please!
Keith Harkin: Hey guys, please help us help Kathy! Much thanks to all!
Paul Byrom: Spread the word please, we have the best fans in the world!
Ryan Kelly: Support the newest addition to the CT fam please!
Emmet Cahill: Yeah guys, would love it if you all helped out!
Sharon Browne: As always, we appreciate all your support! You guys are amazing!
George Donaldson: Thanks for all of your help, guys!
Damian McGinty: Ok, guys here is Kathy.
Damian handed me his computer.
Damian McGinty: Hi, it's Kathy. I appreciate all your help! You guys rock! Thanks a million, everyone!
I gave him back his laptop, and he logged off and put it away. My stomach growled and I realized it was 8PM.
'I probably should go, it's suppertime, and I don't want to distract you all from your plans!' I joked.
'Alright, I'll walk you home.'
I wasn't surprised at that at all. I just smiled and nodded and we headed out the door. He yelled at the lads that he would be back in 15 minutes.
It was twilight, and so pretty. The sun had turned the sky beautiful shades of purple and pink. The few wispy clouds looked like cotton candy. We walked in silence, content with the peaceful air that the evening had. In no time, we were at my front door. Damian gave me a qiuck kiss goodnight, and promised to stop by in the morning. I went inside, and noticed my mum was still out. With Damian's mum, no doubt. I was so exhausted that I decided to grab a quick bite to eat and head off to bed. I munched on an apple and some cheese, and headed up to my room. I opened the window to let in the cool summer breeze. I felt better now that I had hope that I would maybe be able to stay. I sang my favourite song, 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall'. I knew the window was wide open and anyone on the street below would be able to hear me, but I didn't care since my mum wasn't home yet and Damian had left for his house. If I had looked out the window I would have seen him standing under my window, listening to me sing. I fell onto my bed, tired and sleepy. I pulled my comforter around me and fell asleep almost as soon as my head hit my pillow. On the street below, Damian walked home, with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eyes.
