Sam walked slowly into the family room of her uncle's house where the whole family would be meeting for their Christmas party. The reason she was walking so slowly was because she was pulling a very heavy wagon that was overflowing with Christmas presents. It wasn't overflowing because there were a lot of gifts though. It was more because one of the packages was so big.
"What in the world is in that sack?!" Sam's aunt asked her in surprise.
"Molly's Christmas present." She answered.
Just then, Sam's cousin and her family pulled into the drive.
"QUICK!" Sam gasped. "Hide him–it!"
Just as the two women got the wagon into the next room, Molly came bursting into the the family room.
"I'm HERE!" She called excitedly.
"Molly!" Sam greeted her cousin.
"Hi-a Sommie! Hi Susan!" Molly was grinning so wide that Sam was sure her face would split in two because of it. She was also sure she was up to some mischief again.
Their aunt, Susan heard a muffled whimper from the next room over.
"What was … that?" She asked Sam.
"Uh, nothing." Sam answered guiltily.
"You will NEVER guess what I got you for Christmas!" Molly giggled (which she didn't do often.) "You're gonna LOVE it! You're going to SCEAM when you see it!"
"You're gonna love what I got you even more." Sam assured her best friend.
"Not likely." Molly grinned. "Just wail till ya see it."
She ran out the front door without any warning, then came back in minuet later with an enormous box.
"help" Came a muffled sound from inside. But only Molly heard it.
"Shush!" She demanded quietly. Then to her cousin she said, "Here ya go, Sommie-Jo!"
"WOW!" Susan gasped. "You two got some big presents for each other this year."
"Ooh!" Molly cheered. "What'd ya get me?"
"You'll see." Sam answered mischievously. "You'll see."

"Now that everyone's here," Uncle Steve announced. "And since I am extremely curious about the two girls' gifts to each other, I think we should open presents now. Starting with Sam."
"Careful when you open it." Molly warned. "Don't let it get too much momentum if it get's out."
"What?!" Their other aunt, Shelley, shrieked. "What IS it? Is it poisonous? Is it a snake?!"
"YES!" Molly shouted at her least favorite aunt. "It's a poisonous snake that takes up a three foot tall square box! That's what I got her for Christmas! You guessed it!" With that she rolled her eyes at the woman.
"Sounds pretty cool." Steve laughed at the girls sarcasm.
"You gonna teach this one to dance too, Steve?" Molly's mother asked him.
"Just open it!" Molly squealed. "I can't wait any longer!" Then she realized the gift hadn't made any noise in the last few minuets. "And he might be running out of air in there." she muttered to herself.
As Sam began to tear the bright red paper away from the enormous box, the package began shaking and bulging in random places.
"What the –!" Sam shrieked.
"Just hurry up!" Molly was bouncing with excitement.
Sam tore all the paper off and reached to cut the duct tape that held it together.
"Can I borrow it sometimes?" Molly's sister, Megan asked.
"No!" Molly scolded her.
"What is it?!" Susan was anxious to know.
Everyone leaned forward as Sam cut the last bit of tape on the top of the box. Suddenly, a man's head shot up through the now opened top.
"AAAHHH!" Sam's scream was ear-splitting.
"OW!" Ryan Kelly yelled from where he sat, tied up in his box. "What the – " He yelped. "Who are all these people? Where am I? Why do these crazy things always happen to ME? Why can't something like this happen to Damian? Or better yet, Keith!" He leaned back against the corner of his box and began the usual ritual of sulking that inevitably takes place whenever one finds themselves tied up and given as a Christmas present for a twenty-year-old girl when none of his friends must share the same fate.
"Hi." Sam grinned at the Irish singer.
The rest of the family was left speechless.
"Told ya you couldn't out do my gift." Molly smirked.
This brought the love-struck Sam back to reality. "Wanna bet?" She challenged. "Why don't you open yours."
The sack Sam had brought was dragged into the room by her father and left in front of Molly.
"Hmmm." Molly mused. "It looks a bit … lumpy."
"Just open it." Sam laughed. So Molly did.
She carefully untied the ribbon that held the sack shut and pulled it open.
"Awwwww!" she cooed. "He looks so pitiful in there!" She pulled the top of the bag open and reveled the blonde head of Keith Harkin, his mouth sealed with a handkerchief with a Christmas bow stuck to it.
I couldn't get him to stop talking for ANYTHING." Sam explained.
"HA!" Ryan shouted, cheered up a bit at the knowledge that one of his friends did in fact share a similar fate to his own.
Again, the family was speechless.
"Mmm." Keith moaned, still not raising his head to look at his surroundings. "Mmm mm mmmm mm."
Molly untied the handkerchief and pulled it away from his mouth. Keith looked up at her with a pitiful expression, until he met her sympathetic smile.
"Why, hello." he grinned back. "Merry Christmas to me."
Molly rolled her eyes at the Irishman.
"See?" Sam said to him. "I told you it wouldn't be that bad. You're just SO dramatic."
"Well, how about you?" Ryan asked her, now realizing the girl he was given to was far from plain, herself. "Are you all that bad?"
"I don't know, am I?"
"Well, I don't know. Do you like sports?"
"I, uh, tolerate it." She tried to force a smile.
"How about music?" Ryan asked hopefully. He was a bit disappointed by her first answer.
"Love it!" This time she couldn't help but smile. He liked her smile.
"Do you sing?" He asked, a bit more excited.
"Black is the colour," She began to sing. "Of my true love's hair."
Ryan's jaw dropped. "If I write a song for you, would you sing it for me?" He asked.
"Of course!" Sam blurted out instantly.
"How about a duet?" He asked again.
"Heck yeah!"
"Perfect!" Ryan was overjoyed and overwhelmed by sudden love.
"They have problems." Keith whispered to his new girlfriend, Molly.
"They always have." Molly sighed. "And they always will." She and Keith shook their heads sympatheticly at the couple.
