"Oh, you made it!" Sam yelled excitedly when she saw her three teenaged friends walk up to the park where her Sweet-Sixteen was taking place.
"Of course we did." Ryan assured her.
"We wouldn't miss it for the world!" Neil smiled at her.
"Why do I always get stuck carrying the stuff?" Keith whined as he set three large gift bags on one of the picnic tables.
"Aww, poor Keef!" Sam said running up to tackle-hug her surfer friend. "You're just so good at it!"
"Exactly." Neil agreed.
"Hi Neil!" Sam yelled giving him a tackle-hug of his own.
"Hi Sammie." Ryan said when she turned toward him. Ryan was the ONLY person in the world who was allowed to call her Sammie, partly because when said with his thick Irish accent, it sounded more like 'Sommie', but mostly because Ryan was the kind of person who Sam just couldn't say 'no' to.
"Ryan!" She squealed at the sound of his nickname for her. She gave him the biggest tackle-hug of all.
"Oof! You're gonna kill me with one of those one of these days." Ryan laughed as he threw his arms around her in a tight embrace.
"CAKE!" Keith cheered seeing the three layered beauty sitting on a table with it's orange and white roses arranged on top. Green vines draped down the sides, flowing delicately around the words 'Breithla Sona Duit' which, as Keith clearly knew, meant 'Happy Birthday' in Gaelic.
"Not quite yet." Sam's mom smiled at the over enthusiastic seventeen-year-old. "In a few minuets."
"That is a beaut!" Neil gasped, referring to the cake.
"Isn't it?" Sam agreed excitedly. "My best friend made it for me."
"Wow! She's good!" Neil exclaimed.
"So what'd ya get me?" Sam giggled, skipping over to the gifts the three boys had brought.
Keith hurried over and slapped her on the hand. "Don't look!" He demanded. "It's not time yet."
"Oh, lay off." Ryan told him.
"Why do you think that just because you're a year older then me, you can tell me what to do?" Keith huffed.
"Everyone tells you what to do, Keith." Neil pointed out. "The only difference between the two types of people who do it is that you listen to one, but not anyone else."
"Yeah." Ryan teased. "You'll listen to ONE."
"Shove off." Keith told his two friends. He crossed his arms over his chest and turned away from them to hide the fact that he was starting to blush.
"Oh, look!" Sam squealed excitedly. "Here come the last guest!" She ran off to greet the new arrivals. "Shannon!" She called as she ran up to glomp her friend. "You're here!"
"Okay!" Sam's mother announced. "Now that everyone is here, I think we'd better have the cake before it gets too warm and all the frosting melts. And before someone decides to eat it all himself." She added when she saw an eager Keith staring at the cake.
"First," Sam corrected. "We have to sing!"
"Yes!" Her mom agreed. "We can't for get that! Okay, everyone, 1, 2, 3,"
All the guests except Keith, Ryan, and Neil began singing, "Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to – "
But then they were cut off by, "No, no, no!" Keith protested. "It's her Sweet-Sixteen! You can't sing THAT!"
"What are we supposed to sing then?" One of Sam's very confused friends asked him.
"One, Two, Three," He called to his two companions while waving his hands conductor style.
"Tonight's the night I've waited for," The trio sang. "Because you're not a baby anymore." Then, Keith and Neil stopped singing, causing Ryan to take the solo, "You've turned into the prettiest girl I've ever seen." They joined back in, "Happy birthday Sweet-Sixteen!" Ryan gave his two friends a deadly look for making him sing the one line alone.
"When you were only six," Neil skipped ahead in the song. "I was your big brother."
"Then when you were ten, we didn't like each other." Keith cut in.
"When you were thirteen, you were my funny Valentine." Ryan continued.
"But since you've grown up," They all three sang together. "Your future is sown up!"
As Ryan sang the last line according to the original writing of the song, Keith and Neil sang out above him, "From now on you're gonna be Ry-an's!"
Sam and Ryan both stared at Keith and Neil in utter shock at their improved line, a dark blush taking over their faces.
"I think we'd better run now." Neil told Keith, as Ryan's shocked embarrassment slowly faded to a look of pure hatered.
"Yes!" Keith agreed. "Now that he's been found out, I've a feeling we may never be found again if he catches us."
The two friends took off running with Ryan tearing after them, hot on their heals.
"What just happened?" Sam whispered to Shannon.
"Um, Keith and Neil just admitted what Ryan was to shy to." Shannon answered simply.
"What do you mean?" Sam asked her.
"I mean," Shannon explained. "Ryan has been in love with you for, like, EVER but was always too shy to admit it so Keith and Neil just told you for him. And now they're probably going to die."
"Oh." Sam smiled. "He likes me? Really?" She didn't seem to hear the last part about the boy she'd had a crush on since she was little violently disposing of two of her best friends. All she heard was that that boy was madly in love with her, and that was all she cared about.
"Um," Sam's, now rather worried, mother said softly. "D-do you think we should, um, wait for them to come back before I cut the cake?"
"Probably." Shannon told her. "They'll be back in a second.
As if on cue, the three boys came tearing back to the party area from the opposite side of the park from where they'd started toward.
"DON'T KILL ME!" Neil pleaded.
"CAKE!" Keith announced for the second time.
"RYAN!" Sam squealed with joy at the sight of her crush.
Ryan stopped suddenly. "Sam." He smiled innocently. "Hi."
Suddenly realizing the danger the other two boys were in, Sam ran up to him and threw her arms around his neck. "Hi, Ryan." She smile up at him in her attempt to distract him from his rage.
"Hi, Sam." Ryan smiled, wrapping his arms gently around her and staring deep into her emerald eyes. He was strangely comfortable holding her in his arms with her face just inches from his own. "Hi." He said again, this time as more of a whisper. Suddenly Sam found herself drawn closer to him and his lips now against hers in a warm, tender kiss.
"Of course we did." Ryan assured her.
"We wouldn't miss it for the world!" Neil smiled at her.
