It was a dark and stormy night. There was a figure looking out from an alley, onto the street. And as he watched the rain pouring down, he saw a girl. The girl stumbled along, clutching something against her chest. It looked as if she had been crying. Then he saw her fall onto the cobblestone sidewalk. She was cute, the man decided. In a wet, drowned rat sort of way.
And as he watched, a group of men came upon her and surrounded her. The girl struggled and clutched the something against her chest even more tightly.
The figure pushed off against the wall and walked into the rain. He supposed he would have to help her. “Alright lads, funs over”, the figure said as he walked up to them.
“And just who are you?”, one man asked.
“No one of importance. Now leave the girl alone”
“No, I don’t think I will”, he replied.
The figure sighed and punched the man in the face, quickly disposing of the other men as well.
He reached a hand down to the girl. “You alright?”
“I’m- I- no…”, the girl started crying again.
The figure bent down and picked her up, not caring if it wasn’t polite. “I’m taking you home”, he whispered in her ear.
“No! I’ll be okay”, the girl protested.
But the figure just chuckled. "You're on a dark street in the middle of the night. You won't be okay. Just lay your head down... and let me take care of it", he said softly, his lips brushing her ear.
The girl seemed too exhausted to care. She lay her head on his shoulder and let him carry her away....
"Who are you?", she asked.
"No one of importance", the man murmured. "Let's just get you safe"
He lay her down on the couch in his home and looked down at the sleeping girl.
As he looked at her, her eyes fluttered open and he smiled at her.
"I'll see you in the morning", he said softly.
"No!", she grasped his hand. "Please... don't leave. I don't feel safe"
The man chuckled. "There's only room on that couch for one, love"
"Just please... don't leave me", she repeated.
Her voice was fading, but the man could still tell that she was scared. Very scared. He didn't know why... but he couldn't ignore the plea in her voice
So he picked her up again, and carried her to his room.
And as he laid her on the bed, he couldn't help but realize how beautiful she was. She looked like a little flower, laying there in her dress. A little, broken flower.
"You're safe here", he whispered as he covered her up. He turned to leave and take the couch himself, but her voice stopped him.
"Do you have to go?"
He looked at her, knowing that getting into that bed wouldn't be right. But what could he do? She was begging him not to go.
"I'll be right here, in the other room", he reminded her softly. "I'll even leave the door open"
The girl's eyes were wide and fearful, and the man's heart felt as if it would break.
So he got a blanket and set up a spot on the floor, next to the bed. "I'm right here. No one's going to get to you", he promised.
The girl sighed and drifted off to sleep.
What had happened? What had caused her so much fear?
The man looked down at the small form and brushed a small lock of hair off her face. He would have to find out in the morning.
And that was how Paul and Mia met.
