Paul stood still at the side of the huge lake, looking over the clear water reflecting the sky above. Mountains rose up around it, framing the loch. George had invited the lads to come to Scotland for a short vacation before tours began again, and this was the second week. The others had quickly found something to entertain them, but Paul was finding it hard to fit in with them for some reason. Usually, they were all together, but here, the lads were excluding him in their plans. The only ones that tried to make him feel at home were George and his family, but they were not enough. As a result, Paul now planned on spending the next few weeks exploring the country by himself. Sighing, he glanced up at the darkening sky. Turning to go, he caught a glimpse of something out of the corner of his eye. Frowning, he looked back, scanning the waters for the movement he had seen. Finally, after a long time, he left, a mystery clouding his thoughts. * * * The next day, Paul returned to the loch and spent the whole day walking around it, enticed by the fresh air and thick forests. After a few hours, he was walking along the ridge of a steep cliff overhanging the loch. Suddenly, the small rocks under his feet slid out from under him and he realized that there was really no saving his fall. With a futile, desperate cry for help, he skidded down the slope, tumbling down into the cold water below, hitting just about every limb in his body, landing with a huge splash. * * *

With a groan, he opened his eyes. Where was he? How—? And then he remembered. Twisting his torso around, he looked around. And froze. Staring at him from a large boulder in the water was a HUGE…whatever that thing was. About 30 feet high, and roughly 40 feet long, with a gray-blue body, four flippers, whale-like tail, long neck, and two horns on his head, was a monstrous animal. Paul sat stock-still, gaping, not sure if he was dreaming or not. He was on the shore of a loch, sitting in the hot gravel-like rocks, next to an animal that looked an awful lot like what the Loch Ness monster. That was, at the moment, tossing Paul’s camera up and down in the air using his tail. With a muffled shriek, he scrambled and ran away, back towards his car, not looking back. But he had gone less than a few yards when something grabbed his shirt and jerked him back, sweeping him off his feet and flinging him in the opposite direction. Dazed, he looked at the animal. It really wasn’t that bad, he had to admit. It wasn’t trying to eat him, or toss him around as much as he had thought, and looked rather friendly, as a matter of fact, with that gentle face and kind eyes. Paul snorted. Kind eyes? Gentle face? What was he thinking?! This was a monster! Watching the creature warily, he eyed his camera, lying a few feet from him, and then the road that would take him back to his car and away from this madness. Maybe it’s hungry, Paul thought, pulling out an apple from his pocket and tossing it to the animal. It gulped it down in a single swallow, and then quirked its head, watching him. “I don’t have any more, I’m sorry,” Paul whispered, his throat tight with fear. Then, with a quiet murmur, the thing waddled back into the water and disappeared, reappearing within a few moments with a fish sticking out of the corner of his mouth. Leaning back out of the water, it tossed the fish close to him, prodding it with a blunt nose, offering him a treat. Paul wrinkled his nose, not sure that he wanted to eat a raw fish that had been inside that thing’s mouth. Shaking his head, he gave it back to the animal, stealing a quick touch. It’s so smooth, he thought, feeling the slippery skin. Then, the animal disappeared. Smiling, Paul realized that he had just made a new friend, however unlikely he seemed. * * *

For the next few weeks, Paul visited every day, spending hours talking with the creature, which he had named Storm. A week or so after meeting Storm, Paul even risked sitting on his back, and from that time on, the two would go for long rides across the loch. Once, Storm had plunged down underwater, dragging a horrified Paul with him, and taken him to all the gorgeous places in the loch, from the sea floor to the old shipwreck on the jagged rocks. After that first underwater ride, Paul took to bringing a pair of goggles with him so that he could see, and the only problem he had was the water pressure. But for some reason, whenever he was on Storm, that was no longer a problem; there was some sort of magical power to the animal that protected him, and he was able to hold his breath for several minutes without a hitch. The last week, the other lads began to wonder why Paul left every day for the same place. He had never explained, and they had never bothered to ask, but now they were curious. “Why don’t we follow him?” asked Ryan after Paul had left once more. They had asked him why he did so, but he had not answered, running away before they could ask anything else. “What if he’s meeting someone there? That would be just too awkward if he sees us and all that he’s been doing was meeting a girl or something.” This came from Keith. “Right. Uh-huh. Meeting a girl at a lake. With goggles. And a spare set of clothes. Every single day, all day long. Are we talking about the same Paul? Because that sure does not sound like our Paul.” Again from Ryan. “Maybe he’s looking for the lost treasure ships at the bottom of the lake!” “Damien, seriously, do you think he would be doing that?” “Well, it’s Paul! Anything is possible!” “True. I still think we should follow him, see what he’s doing.” * * *

The lads set out after him, following a discreet distance behind. What they saw next, none of them forgot for the rest of their lives. Paul walked casually along the lake’s side, setting down the spare clothes on a rock. Pulling on his goggles and taking an apple from his pocket, he jogged down the dock, whistling shrilly. A few seconds later, they saw a large head pop out of the water and swim towards the tall man, bobbing up and down. As it got closer, they realized that the head was attached to a long neck, which in turn was connected to a huge body. When the thing waddled up to Paul in the shallow water, he hugged the thick neck, wrapping his arms around it while the head snatched the apple from his hand. Crunching loudly, the animal nuzzled Paul, head-butting him, almost toppling him over. Paul laughed, and then he jumped up, grabbed two of the spines on the neck, and swung himself onto the neck of the animal. With another whistle, he squeezed the sides of the creature like he would a horse’s and tugged on the spines, turning the sea monster around. Together, they shot away into the dark waters, diving down into the depths, the man’s arms clamped tightly around the neck. After several minutes, however, they became worried because the two had still not surfaced. Just as they were on the verge of diving into the lake to look for their friend, there was a thunderous roar from their left. Whirling around, they saw Paul and the creature rising out of the water, soaking wet. He was grinning happily and laughing, but froze when he saw the lads on the shore, their faces a mixture of horror, worry, and amazement. “Guys?” he asked. “What are you doing here?” “We…we…f-f-followed you here, and…” Damien stuttered, staring at Storm. Paul glanced around at the faces, and then nudged the animal towards them. As he came closer, they could see that he had a strained look on his face. “Well, now you’ve seen Storm,” he said quietly, watching them carefully. “He’s gentle, don’t worry.” There was a long pause as he read the expressions on their faces. “It would be great if you did not let on about him, lads,” he continued. “I don’t want him, well, you know… too much publicity is also bad for the only water horse in the world.” “Water horse? That’s a water horse? That looks like a dragon!” Keith and Damien said this simultaneously, staring at Storm. “How come you’re riding it?” asked Ryan, admiring the way Paul sat so calmly on the slippery back, envious. He wanted to take a ride as well, considering how easy Paul made it seem. “I don’t really know, Ryan,” replied Paul. “I was with him one day, and then he just tossed me onboard and took off. Before I knew it, we were having great craic diving in the deep and racing the birds across the lake. That is,” he added with a chuckle, “the birds that could get away from him so as not to end up his dinner. But overall, this has been the time of my life. I have no idea how I’ll be able to leave this place to go back.” “You have to go back, lad,” said George softly, a sympathetic look on his face. “You cannot stay here, in Scotland.” Paul averted his gaze. Then, suddenly, he tugged on the spikes on Storm’s neck and turned him around back towards the water. With a whoop, the two of them leaped back into the deep and disappeared below the surface. But just before they did, the group heard, “I still have a week, and I plan to spend it with a friend.” * * *
