* * * *
About 15 minutes later we were in the car on our way to our destination which was still unknown to Kathy. The first 10 minutes were driven in silence- not counting the radio in the background- which was fine by me. Then she finally broke the silence by that annoying sound of when you reach the bottom of the cup but you keep on sucking on your straw. This went on for a full minute before it finally drove me crazy.
“You know, that sound means there’s nothing left in the cup.”
“There was still some crème left.” she replied, defensively. “So here’s a crazy idea, and just hear me out okay?” I didn’t answer, but she continued anyways. “I think you should pull over and let me drive.”
I laughed mockingly. “What? Why? And no way.”
She placed her empty cup back into the cup holder on the dash board. “It’s just that you drive really slow. No offense.”
“I do not!”
“Afraid so, Damian.”
“You’re not driving my car.”
She sighed dramatically. “Fine.”
Silence ensued, but this time it made me a little uncomfortable so I decided to strike up a conversation. “So, what’s up with you Mom?”
She looked out the window on her side. “What do you mean?”
“Oh, you know,” I did a casual little movement of my hand. “The whole baking thing at 4 AM.”
“Actually, it starts at 3 in the morning. But anyways, she has this really bad sleepwalking problem.”
“Well that’s strange.” I responded.
She kept looking out the window. “Yeah, but on the plus side there’s always cupcakes and muffins for breakfast. Which reminds me,” she reached for a container and opened it up handing me a muffin. “It’s blueberry. She gave me it before I left and said to give it to ‘that one weird friend’ of mine.”
I feigned looking hurtful by the comment. “She really said ‘that one weird friend’.”
She hesitated to which I raised a questioning eyebrow. “Well not exactly,” More hesitation but then mumbled the next part. “She said ‘that one cute friend’.”
She looked so uncomfortable saying it, I just had to had to ask her to repeat it again for my amusement. She did repeat it, but it came out muffled.
“One more time please, I didn’t catch that.” I said.
“No.”
“One last time.”
“No.”
“Aww, c’mon.”
“I hope you like the silent treatment.” she threatened.
I bit back the laughter rising in my throat. “Well, I hope you like walking home.”
She looked away from the window towards me. “You wouldn’t.”
“Oh, I don’t know. I just might.”
I allowed a small smile to form on my lips. “You’re bluffing.”
“Are you willing to call me on that bluff though?”
“Humph.” She crossed her arms defensively. “I hope you know that I hate you.”
I chuckled. “The feeling’s mutual.”
I pulled the car to stop. “We’re here!”
“So you woke me up at 4 AM to drive me to a dark forest?”
“Just grab the cameras and follow me.” I said, opening the door.
* * * *
“Oww!” Kathy yelled after tripping over a root of a tree for second time. “Why couldn’t we possibly wait to do this until daytime? When there’s light!”
“Because then we would miss the sun rise. Now would you stop falling and tripping everywhere?”
“Oh gee, am I bothering you? I’m sorry, I’ll try to control myself from now on for your sake. Especially since you’ve been nothing but absolutely charming this morning!” She replied with more sarcasm than needed.
“Someone isn’t a morning person.” I grumbled.
“Excuse me? Would you mind repeating that?”
‘Women. Whatcha gonna do?’ I thought sarcastically. I decided a smart move would be to not repeat what I said. So instead I announced that we were here, on top of the hill looking down to a lake and visible line of the horizon. Of course, you couldn’t be able to know that since there was no light coming up yet. I only knew this from the countless times I’ve been here.
“Okay since we have two cameras lets split up so we get can work from different views and angles.” I suggested.
“Fine by me. I’ll be down by the lake then.” she answered then left without another word.
After being left alone I looked around me for a clear space on the hill that was level so I could balance the tripod on. This was such an easy task since I was on a hill for one, and second I was still practically in the forest still, with all the bushes and trees.
When the sun started rising I felt myself swell up with excitement. It was even almost worth getting up for at 3:30 AM. At one moment the view in front of me was like a backdrop out of a story. The orange, pink sky from the sun rising, the green trees surrounding the lake, a couple of birds flying about, the sun rays reflecting off the small ripples of water. It was all so serene and spectacular looking.
After taking tons of pictures using the tripod I decided to take some free hand shots. I unattached the camera from the tripod and started turning in various ways to get different angles. For one shot I really wanted to capture as much as I could. So I tried to adjust my lens and widen the frame as much as possible.
It still wasn’t quite enough, with the camera still in my hands and up against my eye, I took a couple of steps backwards. I counted silently my steps as I went. One…two…thre--
I felt myself trip over something and went tumbling backwards. I tried to regain my balance- and uselessly, I might add- by flailing my arms at my sides. Then Bam! I hit the ground, hard…well, I thought I hit the ground.
“OWW!” I left out an agonizing sound of pain as I realized what I landed onto. If it ever occurred to me to hope, I most definitely would have hoped to have hit the ground. I’m was more than certain it would have been more pleasant than the rosebush.Hope you all liked it! Please comment
