Here it is, as promised!**** As the bell rung everyone scurried back to their seats for class to start. While Mrs. Stevens wrote today’s objective on the board, we all took out our notebooks and yesterday’s Spanish I homework. After she finished writing she turned to face us and address the whole class.
“Buenos dias! Como estas?” she asked (Good Morning! How are you?)
This was a daily thing that she asked and we would always respond with, “Estoy bien, gracias. Y usted?” (I’m fine, thanks. & you?)
“Muy bien gracias,” she answered. (Very good, thanks.) “Ah, pasar su tarea al frente, por favor.” (Please pass your homework to the front.)
I snuck a look over at Damian as I passed my homework to Turner who was in front of me and saw that he looked a bit clueless as what to do. It was obvious that he didn’t understand what Mrs. Stevens instructed. I giggled softly to myself as I watched him finally realized what to do.
We all sat silently as the teacher read aloud the objective of today in English- thankfully.
“Today’s object will be conjugating reflexive verbs, continued from last class.” she announced.
I let out an unnecessary loud groan with the rest of the class. We’ve already learned about 20 verbs this past week, how many more could there possibly be this language?
“Alright, alright quit complaining. I’ll tell ya what, I’ll compromise with you guys. I’ll do my normal lecture,
She was interrupted by protests that that wasn’t a compromise.
“I wasn’t finished. I’ll do my usual lecture, BUT you won’t have to take notes. All I ask is that you won’t take advantage of this offer and pay attention. If not, then at least pretend. Good enough?”
In return she only a few grumbled “Okay’s” but that was good enough for her because she carried on into her long in-depth lectures.
****
I wasn’t quite sure at what point I finally dozed off. It might have been sometime during the switch between the verbs ‘Lavarse’ and ‘Peinarse.’ I’d hate to admit it, but I was having one of those cliché dreams of where I was walking through a meadow with a faint calling of my name coming from behind me. Bu tin reality it was just Mrs. Stevens voice calling for me. I only learned this after I was elbowed- hard, if I must add- awake in the ribs.
“Wake up!” Natalie whispered loudly to me. I looked up see Mrs. Stevens standing there tapping her foot waiting for my response.
My eyes darted around the room, helplessly hoping that the answer would appear in mid-air. I blushed a deep crimson as she had to repeat the question, for which I was sure wasn’t the 1st or 2nd time.
“Kathy, could you do us the favor of conjugating the verb “Dormir” (To Sleep) for the she form and put it into a sentence since already kindly showed us the action of the verb already.”
I felt myself self-consciously sink deeper into my chair as the class tried to control their giggling.
“Uh-h…uhm” I stuttered trying to stall as I found a way to answer without making myself sound like a fool. “Ella duermo a las seis…?”
“No, your verb conjugation was off.”
Thankfully, she moved on to another victim to ask for the correct conjugation. Then finally the bell rang. Everyone gathered their stuff and scurried out the room. I walked with Turner- my friend since freshmen year- to the door and was almost home free but then I heard-
“Kathy? May I talk to you?” It was Ms. Stevens
Say no, say no, say no, I told myself.
“Yes?” Darn it. I waved bye to Turner as he left with a promise to save me a seat next class and I was left alone with Ms. Stevens.
Photography class was next and I knew there was almost no chance left for me to sign up for the committee if I stayed any longer. That’s why I decided to cut to the chase.
“Looks Ms. Stevens I’m sorry that I fell asleep in class. I promise if won’t happen again!”
She looked a bit speechless at how I apologized so quickly. I guess I set some kind of record in student actually apologizing without being told to.
“Well, uh, I’m glad you understand what you did wrong.”
And as if I agreed with her it would speed things up I said “Oh yes, completely.”
“Very well then, let me write you a pass to your next class so you won’t be tardy and you can be off.”
I already am tardy, I thought. Of course, I didn’t dare say it aloud.
I watched her jot down today’s date and my tardy excuse then initial it. Once I had the note in my hand and shut the door, I practically ran up the 2 flights of stairs to photography class.
****
I was about 10 minutes late to class when I got to Ms. Travis’ room. There was only one free seat left in the class. Thankfully, it was the one next to Turner that he promised to save for me. I haven’t been able to ask her about signing up yet since it seemed like she was in one of her long lectures. Plus, I knew nothing good came out of interrupting the teacher when they’re in one of those things.
“As a recap for you Miss McClure, I am giving one last assignment being it as the last few weeks of school. I assure you all that this will be an easy ‘A’ earned. All I’m asking for is 3 pictures. Which all will be featured in this year’s Literary Arts magazine. I’ve paired up with the English department for this so it will feature both poems and photography. From your photographs I will pick the top 10, then you all will vote for the best one.”
“What do you get if you win?” someone shouted from behind me.
“Winner gets their picture published as the cover.” she answered.
This seemed like an easy project, in fact, a little too easy. There must be some catch to it, she just hasn’t told us yet.
Ms. Travis went on describing the project and what the 3 pictures she wanted to be of. She told us the objective of the goal was to capture Ireland’s essence through 3 different ways.
“The first, the beautiful landscape - rolling green hills, cliffs, etc. The second, the rich culture/history of Ireland. We all know that Ireland’s history is long and filled, so if you can capture that in a picture- well then kudos to you. And lastly, romance. I want you to capture the ability to fall in love in this whimsical place in one picture. “
I quietly laughed to myself with an edge of sarcasm. Romance? Falling in love? In Ireland? She must be crazy. Not a chance. At least for me…anymore, of course. Though I admit, it did happen once. Or at least I think it did. My thoughts were interrupted as Turner leaned over and whispered something to me.
“Is it just or me or does this project seem to good to be true?” he said.
“I heard that Turner. And no it does not, to answer your question. Can’t I be generous without being questioned?” Ms. Travis asked.
Turner’s cheeks flushed a light pink. I couldn’t help but laugh silently. “Sorry,” he mumbled.
Ms. Travis carried on. “In fact I’m evening letting you have partners,”
Didn’t matter if she denied it, I still think there’s a catch to it.
“but I will be picking them.” said, smiling.
And there it is- the catch. I'm sorry its been sooo long since i've updated this! but im hoping to update more often again! anyways, thanks for reading!

Sorry its so short! ****
After some more extensive details were told about the project we were told we weren’t going to know our partners til tomorrow. It was times like this where I wondered if keeping students in suspense is one of the many goals of teachers.
We ended up having a few minutes of class left which I took advantage of to talk to Ms. Travis.
“Ms. Travis?” I asked, when I finally got the a chance to speak with her alone.
“I’ll be with you in a second Kathy.” She quickly finished typing her sentence onto the computer and looked up. “What is it that you need dear?”
“Well I was wondering about helping with the year book committee thing,” I began.
“Well, last time I checked there were one or two spots open. But you can check the clip board for yourself.” she pointed to where the clip board was and went back to typing on her computer.
I started to worry as I scanned the first page already filled up with names. Knowing there was a second page though gave a bit of relief. I did a quick flip of the page and another scan through the names. The sense of relief was short lived though, no spots were left.
I cursed at myself silently was falling asleep in Spanish class. Otherwise I wouldn’t have had to stay after and be late to this class. I took one last glance at the list of names before handing back the clipboard. My eyes fell onto the last name and lingered for a bit. “Damian J. McGinty”
Of course, I thought to myself. Of course the one last spot left would be taken by him. Maybe I was crazy for thinking this, but what if this was done out of pure spite? But surely, he can’t be that mean?
My thoughts were interrupted when the loud ring of the bell rang throughout the whole school. Everyone scurried out of the room getting to there next class. I grabbed my bag, which was heavier than normal thanks to my Spanish textbook, and slung the straps onto my shoulder.
I froze as I heard his voice over my shoulder. “Bye Ms. Travis!” He turn to acknowledge me and the clipboard in my hand. “See ya Kathy.”
I mumbled back something that I hoped to be a ‘See ya,’
Okay, I thought. Maybe he is just that mean. I took the clipboard that was still in my hands and placed it back onto Ms. Travis’ desk none to gently. I then walked out the classroom brainstorming ways to get him back.
I'll update again tomorrow afternoon/night! Comment pleasee!
