Chapter 21
“Um…hi,” Damian said timidly to the woman standing behind me. At first glance, either because I did not get a good look or because my mind was playing tricks on me, I could have sworn that the woman standing behind me was Damian’s mother. Now, I realized, this woman was much too young – she was maybe college age? A brick seemed to have landed in my stomach. Another girl? She definitely seemed to recognize Damian, and she was pretty and about our age. Why would another girl be coming over Damian’s house? “Damian?” the girl said questioningly. “What’s going on here?” Yes, I would like to know what was going on here, too! I threw a confused, worried look at Damian, and then looked back at the girl. Wait a minute, I said to myself, They kind of look alike! Of course! She must be Damian’s sister! I forgot the girl and now had eyes only for Damian. A new, fresh feeling of panic set in. What would she think of me being here? “Gemma,” he said unsteadily, confirming my thought. “There’s – it’s – it’s complicated.” Damian approached me, and I reached my hand out to him. He slid his arm around my waist again, but this time it seemed more protective, instead of worried like it was before when he was on the phone. “Who is this?” Gemma asked, glancing back and forth from Damian’s face to mine. Her eyes followed his arm, which was around my waist, and as comprehension clicked, they popped. “You – you’re –” she stammered. “This is Abby,” Damian explained. “How – why is she here?” Gemma demanded harshly, her voice rising a little. I cringed into Damian’s side, and I felt him wince at the shrill sound of her voice. “Gemma –” Damian began, but seemed at a loss for words. “It’s a long story,” I said simply. “I’d love to hear it,” she said, looking at both of us together. She seemed to have aged ten years since when she first walked through the door; she seemed too authoritative and demanding. Of course, that was just in my head. “Okay, here’s the short version,” Damian said suddenly, regaining speech. “Abby was going to visit Oxford to check out the campus and classes and everything. So, I met her in England, and she came here with me, and now she’s staying at Keith’s.” Gemma looked baffled. “Wh – does your mother know about this?” she asked me. “Well…yeah, but she’s not too happy about it.” She waited while I struggled for words. “Ya see, I kinda left my mom at the airport and didn’t tell her anything about it.” “Does she know where you are?” “Yes!” I exclaimed. “But Mum doesn’t know that she’s here,” came Gemma’s question, directed at Damian this time. “No.” She took a deep breath. Before she could speak, however, Damian pleaded with her, “Please don’t tell her! We’ve kept it a secret so far, and if Mum knew, she would go mental!” “Mum’s gonna go mental?” Gemma yelled. “Damian, I’m goin' mental right now! Do you know how mad Mom would be if she found out that your girlfriend ran away and is stayin' with you now? And what about me? What kind of position did you just put me in?!” “C’mon, please!” Damian yelled, getting just as fired up as his sister. “If you don’t tell her, nobody has to know, and it’ll be like nothing ever happened. It’d be so much easier for all of us if you just didn’t tell Mom.” She closed her eyes and thought about it for a second. When she reopened her eyes, they were a dark glare directed right at Damian. “It doesn’t mean I’m happy about it.” “So that’s a yes?” he asked brightly. “You won’t tell her?” “No,” Gemma responded, and both Damian and I breathed a sigh of relief. “But if you ever do anything like this again, Damian, I swear –” “I know, I know, you’ll have my head, I get it!” he said happily. His elated face shone down on mine, and I knew that our secret was still intact. “Thank you,” I said sincerely to Gemma. “Sure, sure,” she said patronizingly. “I guess I should introduce myself,” I said awkwardly, shrugging out from Damian’s grip. “I’m Abby, Damian’s girlfriend.” “I’m Gemma, his sister.” We shook hands. After a minute of silence, we all decided to walk to the living room and sit down, to get the full story out. “So, when you told Mum you were doing stuff with Celtic Thunder,” Gemma said loudly to Damian, “You were really in England?” “Yupp,” he answered matter-of-factly. “Wow,” she said, stunned. “If Mom knew, she’d probably kill you.” “I know,” he said. “That’s why we’re not telling her, got it?” “Yeah, yeah,” Gemma replied, again patronizingly. “But now it’s your turn to answer a question,” Damian said accusingly, sitting up straighter beside me. “Why did you come home so early? I thought you had plans today!” “I did,” she replied easily. “I was supposed to be helping a friend move in, but the rain kind of ruined that. She couldn’t move any of her furniture, or else it’d get wet, so I said I’d just help her tomorrow, if the rain stops.” Damian grumbled something that sounded like acceptance, and we moved on with our conversation. “So anyway,” Damian said to Gemma, “What time is Mum going to come home?” “I don’t know,” she answered. “I don’t think it’ll be anytime soon.” “Still,” I interjected, “Maybe we should go, just in case she decides to make a surprise appearance like you did.” I nodded in Gemma’s direction. “Go?” asked Damian, and he sounded hurt. His eyes portrayed an emotion of sadness and rejection, as if I was dying to get out of his house and away from him. How could he think such ridiculous things? It did no matter to me where we went, just as long as we were there together. “Yeah, you and I,” I stressed that both of us would be going, “Will go back to Keith’s and hang around for a little bit. He said that’d be okay.” I paused for a moment before adding, “Is that okay with you?” “Yeah,” he answered quickly, sounding pacified. Turning to his sister, he added, “See you later. And don’t-” “I get it, Damian, don’t tell Mom! Alright, now go!” She shooed us out the door. The journey from Damian’s house back to Keith’s house was not as long as it had seemed on the way to Damian’s house and, before I knew it, we were back in the familiar small house that belonged to Keith. “Hello?” Damian shouted seconds after walking through the door. “I don’t think he’s home,” I said after a few moments of silence. He shrugged, and made himself comfortable on the couch. I joined him and flicked on the TV. I could barely make sense of what we were watching, I was so tired! I yawned hugely. Throwing my legs over Damian’s, I laid back and stretched across the couch. It was just barely large enough for me to fit all the way on. Yawning again, I stretched and moaned, “I’m so tired!” Damian chuckled and said, “Well, that sucks for you. I got ten hours of sleep last night!” “Yeah, well, we can’t all have the nice accommodations that you do like, oh, say, a bed?!” We both laughed at my sarcasm, and continued to watch TV. Gradually, so that I barely noticed it even occurring, my heavy eyelids slowly drooped, pulling me toward sleep. Each time I noticed the words from the TV growing quieter and quieter and Damian’s words seeming to mush together, I popped them open once again. They did not stay that way for long; every time I blinked, it became harder and harder to keep them open. What seemed like seconds later, I was being awoken by a sudden shift in the couch beneath me. That’s strange, I thought. The couch doesn’t move. That thought was suppressed as I felt a warm body slide behind mine and two embracing arms enclose around me. I was too tired to roll over and face Damian, who had now lain down next to me, or even to reopen my eyes. I twisted my head around for my lips to search his shoulder, his throat, his face, until finally they found his lips. Satisfied with the lips that kissed me, the chuckle in my ear, and the arms that held me, I drifted into a light sleep as before.
well, reply reply reply, even though ive kept you waiting for a month. ill try to be more regular about updating from now on, since ill be starting new easier classes at school and things should hopefully be slowing down a bit. yeah, i know ive said that before, but now i have motivation, because i wont start my new series til this one is finished! so tell me what you think! thanks for reading!
