Beep. Beep. Beep.
My eyes opened. It was my first day of my senior year at a secondary school near Derry called Lumen Christi Secondary School. I was planning on going to Lumen Christi college once the It's Entertainment tour was over. Sharon decided it would be a good thing to continue my education at a regular school for once, instead of being tutored. I'm pretty "iffy" about the idea now, since it's 5:30 in the morning, and the school started at 8, but I guess it's all "worth the wait."
"DAMIAN! WAKE UP!"
I heard Emmett's voice calling from the kitchen, wondering why my mam wasn't the one waking me up, but then I remembered that my mam and da were out of town, celebrating their anniversary. So it was just Emmett, Gemma, and me for a whole month. We all pitched in to get our parents something nice for once. I smiled, remembering the look on my mam's face once she found out she was going to the Canary Islands.
"OI! DAMIAN WAKE UP!"
I rolled my eyes. Emmett sure was the loudest one out of all of us. I was about to get up when I heard footsteps ascending from the staircase.
"DAMIAN! GET OUT OF BED YE LAZY BUM!"
I sat up, waiting for Emmett to enter my room. He was always a busybody, acting like Da when he's not around.
"Didn't ye hear me callin' ye?" He was already dressed for work. With a suit and everything.
I nodded, "Aye, but I knew ye were comin' up the stairs, so I waited." I looked up at my big brother, who was scowling.
"It woulda saved time if ye actually responded and came down the stairs when I asked, Damo." He looked at me, almost like he was disappointed I wasn't listening to him. Usually I ignore everything coming out of Emmett's mouth these days, since he's always reprimanding me for not listening to him or for not doing anything.
"Emmett, it's 5:30. It's too early to actually do anythin'." I looked at him, yawning and getting up from the bed. "Ye are always so uptight, Emmett, it's getting annoying. Especially at 5:30 in the morning." I patted him on the back. Normally if it was afternoon or a regular time, I would have never dreamed in telling him those words, but it was too early and I was tired of it. Nothing is going to stop me from making my first day of my senior year in school amazing. Especially not my uptight brother.
-----
I was nervous, there was no doubt about it. Ireland is amazing, so pure and beautiful. I had no trouble in telling Lucinda, the caretaker of the foster home, goodbye because I finally had a family. And when my new dad told me we were moving to Ireland, I was one of the most happiest people in the world. I had a great family, a new house to call a home, and I would be living in Ireland. How can anything get better than that?
Let me tell you my story. Ever since I was a little girl, my birth mother abandoned me on the steps of a foster care home type thing. And Lucinda, has replaced the title of "mother" for 15 years. I'm 16 now and I was really surprised when I heard the news that somebody wanted to adopt me, because usually they would always go for the little ones. The ones less likely to cause trouble. But nonetheless, I was adopted.
"Why did you adopt me?" I remember asking when my new parents picked me up from the foster care agency, where I would be leaving for good. "I mean, I'm no use, I guess, I'm 16."
My new father, Phil, looked at me and said in his Irish accent, "Just because you're sixteen, doesn't mean you're no use."
I smiled at the thought. I wasn't like the other foster teenagers. They were rebellious and would always get into trouble, thinking they own the whole world. I was really glad someone as great as the Coulters had the chance to adopt me.
Phil rolled down the back window, where I sat. He chuckled, "Make sure ye take a good look of California, because it's the complete opposite of Ireland. I mean, they are both beautiful, but weather-wise." He added, looking through the rear view mirror, winking at me.
I saw Geraldine, my new mom, smile at me through the mirror. "How are ye holding up, sweetie?" She asked.
"I'm great, Geraldine." I replied, smiling at the memory when they both told me I can call them Mom or Dad when I was more comfortable. But for now it was just Phil and Geraldine.
"Ye will love Ireland, Toni. Despite the weather, everything is worth looking for." Phil stated, as he pulled into the airport parking lot.
-----
The ride to Lumen Christi was a little awkward, to tell you the truth. I mean, Gemma was a great companion to be with, more so than Emmett, but she sure did ask questions that were a little..off. It started off like this:
Gemma: So, Damian, how's footy going?
Me: It's going good, Gemm.
Gemma: How come Brennan and them don't come by anymore?
Me: I donno, Gemma.
Gemma: Ye still mates with them?
Me: Yes, Gemma.
Gemma: Aye, how come ye don't invite them over?
Me: I donno Gemm, it's just a little hard, ye know with the tour and everything. We just can't find the time.
Gemma: Ahh.
That was how the first conversation went. And more followed. The conversation I will always remember out of the whole car ride went a little something like this:
Gemma: So Damian, ye got a girlfriend?
Me: No.
Gemma: Why not? Ye ain't bad looking, if I do say so myself.
Me: It's just a little hard, with Celtic Thunder and everything going on.
Gemma: Don't get me wrong, but I think you're letting Celtic Thunder revolve around your life. I mean, when was the last time Sean came over? Ye two were the best of mates, Damian.
Me: He still is my mate.
Gemma: But not as close as before, am I right?
Me: Uhmm yeah, I guess so. But why do ye care if I have a girlfriend?
Gemma: I just think that it would do ye good. Have ye ever been in love, Damo?
Me: No. Well there was..
Gemma: Who?
Me: Forget it, Gemm.
Gemma: Aye, but the feeling of love is a great feeling. It's just ye and that person.
Me: How do ye know. Who are ye in love with, eh?
Gemma: My car.
Me: That doesn't count.
Gemma: Haha, I was just looking out for ye. First loves are an amazing thing to experience, Damo.
And so ended the conversation. Gemma decided to drop me off to school early, since I had registration and everything. I was really hoping I would be the first one, to avoid all the constant stares from passerby, but boy was I wrong.
"When does the school start again?" Gemma asked, as she pulled in the parking lot.
"8:10 sharp." I said, looking at the already filled hallways. "It's only 7:20."
She clicked her tongue. "Well I'm running late. Have a great day and don't get into any trouble."
I rolled my eyes. Typical Gemma. "Aye, remember I have practice today. I'll be out early alright?"
She nodded, putting on her sunglasses. "Get going, freak. I'll see ye after school."
I cleared my throat. "Bye Gemm." I smiled and opened the car door, careful not to show how nervous I was at starting school in the first time since Grade 9.
-----
The seats were comfortable. Phil insisted that I get the window seat, saying it would be good for me to see the sights of Ireland first. I honestly can't believe that I would be adopted by the most amazing people, much less living in Ireland. This was honestly a dream come true.
I looked at Phil, who was listening to the movie being played. Geraldine was in the aisle seat and she looked comfortable, sleeping.
"Do ye need anything?" The flight attendant said, as she surveyed our seats. I looked at Phil, who was too busy listening to the movie being played, so I answered her.
"No, we're good thank you." I said, smiling up at the lady. "But can we get some extra blankets? It's sure getting a bit cold." I smiled as I contradicted myself.
The flight attendant must have been getting that a lot during the trip because she just smiled at me and said, "Be right back, miss."
Phil took of his headphones as the attendant walked away. "Did she say something?" He asked, as he put his headphones in the little compartment and stretched his whole body out.
"I just asked for an extra blanket." I said, tucking the blanket I already had around me.
Phil smiled. "Ahh, the cold is getting to ye. We must be nearly there." He looked at Geraldine. "Best not to wake her up just yet, aye?"
I shook my head. "No, she looks peaceful. So tell me more about Ireland, Phil."
He smiled. He seemed to like that sentence. "Aye, well let us see. Ireland is beautiful indeed, and the people are very friendly. We have an amazing history, filled with fairy tales of all kinds. Ye will just love it, Toni, I can already see ye enjoying it. Although, we will be staying in Derry for a while. Ye see I have two homes. My permanent home is in Derry, while my other home is in Dublin. Please don't think lowly of me, dear." He said, adding a wink. "I told ye already about Celtic Thunder am I correct?"
I nodded, remembering the time where he took me aside and told me about a show he composed for called Celtic Thunder. It consisted of 5 men, all with amazing voices and different styles of music. My favorite one would have to be the youngest guy, Damian McGinty. He had dark brown hair. He was pretty tall and had the most amazing eyes in the world. They were bright blue, brighter than the ocean, if it were possible.
"Well," Phil continued, "We are starting a new tour and I hope it's okay with ye, but I arranged a tutor for ye to have for 2 months. She's the very best. She tutored Damian as well, but who knows? Damian isn't really that bright." He added, chuckling. "I'm only joking, he's a very good kid, very headstrong, but a complete gentleman."
I smiled as he described Damian. Now he's making me want to meet him. But who knows? Maybe it'll come true someday.
"Excuse me passengers, we will be landing in Dublin, Ireland in thirty minutes. I ask that ye please put on your seat belts and enjoy the ride." Our pilot added with a chuckle. My stomach dropped. I could not believe this was actually happening. Phil grinned as he nudged Geraldine awake.
"Here's your blanket, miss." The flight attendant said, handing me my blanket.
I kindly took it, "Thank you." I said, wrapping the blanket around me.
"Fáilte Ireland." She smiled as she went back to the other compartments. I had a feeling I was going to enjoy life.
-----
"That's Damian McGinty."
I have been stuck in the office for a long time. I had to return my registration slips and check in and get my schedule. I never realized school would be this hard.
"Ahh here ye are, Mr. McGinty. Have yer schedule and everything." The secretary said, handing me my schedule and giving me a warm smile. "I must say, I am a very big fan."
I smiled. Of course she was. I haven't been in this school in an hour yet and I have already been told by many people that they were big fans or they couldn't believe I was actually going to school here.
"Thank ye." I said as I went out the doors. I looked down at my schedule. Room 134B - Physics. I loved Physics so I guess it wouldn't be half bad. I was running a little late, but good thing the lady at the desk wrote me a pass. A little too eagerly I might add.
I found the room and knocked three times. Then it was opened by a man wearing a dark beige suit with a striped tie. Presumably the teacher, Mr. O'Grady.
"Ahh hello." He said, as he let me in. "What do we have here?"
I grinned half-heartedly as he surveyed my schedule. "I will have ye sit next to Ms. Coyne over there in the back right." He said, pointing. I looked and met eyes with a smiling girl, who had long, curly, brown hair with a smile on her face. I took my schedule back and made my way to the ONLY empty chair in the class, ignoring all the stares.
"Hello, I'm Deidre." The girl said, extending her hand.
I smiled. "I'm Damian." I said, shaking her hand in return.
"Nice to meet ye. I'm a very big fan. Bird Without Wings is incredible." She added, batting her eyelashes.
Now don't get me wrong, I love my fans. But sometimes it is a little weird to be fawned over by millions of girls. I started to rethink the conversation I had with Gemma. I have met over a hundred girls, but not one has caught my eye. I listened to Mr. O'Grady carefully, but I could not get the fact that I haven't found a girl yet. I mean, I'm in no rush at all, but it just strikes me different. Maybe I'm just getting to know myself.

We arrived in Ireland. It was around 8 in the morning. Once we got out of the airplane and received out luggage, I immediately looked through the big window. The sky was gray and filled with fog. Other than the weather, the hollow pit in my stomach was lifted.
"Ye ready to go, Toni?" Geraldine asked, handing me my luggage. I nodded, taking my luggage away.
"It's a long drive back to Derry. Why don't ye get some shut eye?" Phil asked, taking his luggage from the luggage carousel.
I nodded. "So how long are we going to stay in Derry?" I asked, as we made our way out of the airport.
"Just for a month, to get ye settled and everything. We'll be leaving for the tour in the next. Geraldine will stay, though." Phil answered as we walked quickly to the parking lot.
"Oh, you're not coming with us to the tour?" I asked Geraldine, wrapping myself in my jacket.
"No, sweetie. I'll probably visit ye in a month or two, but someone has to stay home and watch the house. Besides, I think I have seen plenty of America for a while." She smiled at me. "Our car is waiting right over there." She pointed and I looked to find a black Subaru with a person standing outside the driver's door.
"Welcome back to Ireland, Mr. and Mrs. Coulter." He said, nodding his head. "And who might this young miss be?" He asked, smiling down at me.
"I'm Toni." I stated, extending my right hand.
"Please to meet ye, miss. I'm Declan McDonnell at your service. I work for the Coulter's." He added, smiling at Phil and Geraldine.
"Oh hush, Declan. No ye don't. Ye offered to pick us up, remember?" Geraldine said, chuckling as she got in the car.
"Aye, I do. And I'm glad I did." He added, winking at me.
"So how old are you Declan?" I asked. He looked around my age, maybe older. Probably around 19 or 20.
"I am 18 miss, how about yourself?" He said, as he started the car.
"16. So why aren't you in school? Isn't it Monday here?" I said, as I strapped on my seat belt.
"That's part of the reason why I'm glad I picked ye people up. I am excused from school. Well until tomorrow." He added, with a sigh. "I'm a senior at Lumen Christi Secondary School. The one where you'll be going, am I right?" He asked, looking at Geraldine through the rear view mirror.
"That's right." She smiled and she looked at my confused face. "Declan here has been a close family friend since he was just a wee lad. He is like our son, in a way."
I smiled and nodded. I understood how she felt.
"But ye wanted a daughter, am I right?" Declan said, chuckling as he stopped at the stop light.
Phil chuckled, but ignored his question. "Lumen Christi Secondary School is a good school that puts education first. As a matter of fact, Damian is going there, too. Today is actually his first day."
"Really? Damian? Damian McGinty?" Declan asked, with genuine interest.
Phil nodded. "I hope it goes well. We'll see him today, Toni. I scheduled a practice. But that is later, right now we're headed home to drop off your things and have ye take a shower."
I smiled. I couldn't believe I was going to be living in Ireland. Today is going to be an epic day, I could just tell. I smiled at Declan, who was smiling at me through the rear view mirror. He winked at me and continued driving.
He was pretty cute. He had light brown hair and hazel eyes. He was taller than me, from what I could see, and he had an athletic build to him.
-----
My day has been going pretty good, so far. Deidre offered to show me around the school but I kindly rejected her offer, I didn't really need any help. I checked out my classrooms early this morning, so I was pretty set. Although, every single time I entered a classroom, I noticed that all the teachers expressed that they were fans and at least one girl from each class said I was their favorite. Well, next to Keith. I also found noticed that I have every class with Deidre. So far. Great.
"Hey Damian! DAMIAN! DAMIAN! DAMIAN! TURN AROUND! DAMIAN!"
I turned around, beaming. I recognized that voice. It was Sean. I waited for him to catch up, ignoring the constant stares.
"Hey DAMO! What's the craic?" He asked, shoving me as he caught up.
I shook my head. "Nothing new. How about ye?" It just occurred to me how much I missed my best mate. I haven't seen him in over a year, considering I had the tour and everything.
"None." He smiled. "Eat with me, yeah? We got a lot of catching up to do, mate." He said, patting my back.
"Sure, nobody to eat with, anyway." I said, as he opened the door to the cafeteria.
The cafeteria was filled with tables, scattered around the whole room. As far as I could see, there wasn't an empty table. Each one was occupied by two or more people. Great.
"Let's go grab some lunch, yeah?" Sean asked, pushing me to the line.
The line stretched all the way to the entrance. We were behind a group of giggling girls. One girl, the one with bright red hair, started to jump up and down and surprised both me and her friends by screaming as loud as she could.
"OH MY GOSH! OH MY GOSH! OH MY GOSH! OH MY GOSH! OH MY GOSH! AHHHHHHH!" She turned around and beamed at me while her friends just started to giggle. "Hi, my name is. Is. Uhmm. Uhmm. Uhh." She stuttered, looking at me.
I chuckled. "Your name is?" I asked, enjoying myself.
Sean laughed. "That's Alice. She's in my Calculus class. Alice, this is Damian. Damo, this is Alice."
I smiled. "Hello Alice." I said. Alice smiled as I mentioned her name. I just realized how pretty she looked. She had bright, blue eyes and straight, red hair that was tied up in a high ponytail. She was also dressed in a footy uniform, which added interest.
"Ye play footy?" I asked, smiling at her.
She nodded. "Yes, haha, wow I cannot believe you're actually talking to me. I'm a really big fan. I just can't believe it."
I smiled. "Haha that's good. So, do ye support Liverpool or Manchester United?" I braced for the worst.
She laughed. "ManU for the win. Definitely. No brainer."
I breathed a sigh of relief. I was actually enjoying myself. This was going to be a really good lunch.
-----
We finally arrived in Derry. Derry was beautiful. The weather hasn't improved but that wasn't going to stop me from living my life. I'll get used to it.
"Welcome home Coulter's." Declan said, smiling at me. He drove through a narrow street and parked at the house. My new house was amazing. It was a quaint little two story house with a lot of land that seemed to stretch on forever.
"Well, it's not much, but it's home." Phil said, as we got out of the car. "Home sweet home."
I smiled. "It's so cute."
Sean got out of the car. "You'll love Ireland, Toni. It's like a fairytale, let me tell ye. But ye will absolutely love Phil's home, it's definitely my favorite place to be."
Geraldine laughed, "Uh huh, well yes and he loves coming here because of the fact that he can get a free meal once in a while, let me tell ye." She said, winking at me. "Sean will ye be a dear and grab the luggage from the back of the car?"
Sean nodded. "Sure, Geraldine." He smirked at me and left to open the trunk.
"Come here sweetie," Geraldine said, taking my hand. "I'll show ye your room."
I smiled and nodded. This was home.
------
There were two more classes left before the end of the school. I must admit, public school was a little hard, but I had fun all the same. I also learned more about Alice, too.
Alice Byrne was a senior who loved chili and played footy every Monday, Thursday, and Saturday. She loved to draw and loved Manchester United.
"Mr. McGinty can ye please read what number 12 states?" Asked my Language Arts teacher.
"Yes, Mr. Doyle." I read the question, but I couldn't understand what it said, but it didn't matter. Mr. Doyle moved on to another student to bother. Out of all the good things that happened to me, I couldn't keep Alice off my mind. It was only my first day and I'm not afraid to admit that I have already fallen for someone.
Ring. Ring. Ring.
The bell excused us. One more class and then I am home. I was looking forward to practice because Phil would be back and he always makes good craic. I had chemistry next and it was on the far side of the school. I only had 4 minutes left so I decided to walk fast. I guess I was rushing too fast because the next thing I knew, I was on the floor.
"Oh! I'm so sorry." A frightened voice said, extending an arm to help me up.
"It's okay." I said. I had a good look and I was face to face with Alice. "Never mind, it's not okay."
She giggled. "What are the charges, Mr. McGinty?" She asked.
I laughed. "I'll tell ye after school tomorrow."
She looked puzzled. "What's going on after school?"
"Oh didn't I tell ye?" I asked, getting ready to walk the other direction.
She shook her head. "Tell me what?"
"Oh, that tomorrow is when we hang out." I laughed at her expression and rushed off to class.
-----
My room was incredible. Geraldine rushed me into a room that was on the far side of the house. As soon as I opened the door, I fell in love with the room. It was small, but incredibly cute. There was a small white bed in the center of the room. There was also a balcony that met a great view of the land. It seemed to stretch on and on. There was also a walk-in closet and a big white dresser.
"I decided to shop for ye before we left Ireland." Geraldine said. "There are new clothes in the dresser. I sure hope they fit ye." She chuckled. "That proves how excited I was."
I smiled. "Thank you, Geraldine. You have no idea how much this means to me."
"Knock Knock." Sean said, beaming from the door. "I have all of your things here, Toni."
I smiled at him but couldn't hide the eagerness on my face. Geraldine must have seen it because she said, "I'll be downstairs. Ye can have a look anywhere ye want dear. The bathroom is just down the hall if ye want to refresh yourself." She smiled as she left the room.
"Well, I'll leave ye to it." Sean said, winking at me before he closed the door.
I sighed. I was going to enjoy it here. And this was all permanent. I opened the dresser, curious to see what Geraldine bought me. I beamed at the sight. The dresser was filled with clothes. I tried all of them on and was surprised that they actually fit me.
I grabbed my belongings and put it on the bed. I'll fix them later. I grabbed my toiletries and my bathrobe and headed out the door. All I needed now was a long, hot shower.
-----
The bell finally dismissed us. I literally ran out the class and looked for Gemma. I finally found the white Audi parked on the curb, with Gemma waving at me. I ran down the steps and climbed in.
"How was your day?" She asked, as she turned the curb.
I smiled. "It was good, but I can't wait for practice."
She sighed. "Ye work too much, Damo." And with those words, she turned on the radio and turned up the music as high as it can go. Great.
-----
After I got done showering, I picked my clothes. I decided to keep it simple. My old pair of skinny jeans, a new shirt that Geraldine bought that I really loved, and my black Converse. I went out the room, but quickly looked through the balcony. I sighed, opening up my suitcase and grabbed my jacket. I guess this is what I'll be wearing.
"Toni, is that ye?" Phil called, waiting at the stairs.
"Hi." I said, fixing my hair.
"Hello, dear. Do your clothes fit ye well?" Geraldine asked, emerging from the kitchen door.
"Thank you." I said, smiling.
Phil smiled. "Ye look wonderful. Are ye ready?"
I nodded. "Where exactly are we going again?"
Phil yawned. "To a little studio outside of Derry. And don't worry, I asked Sharon to make hot chocolate." He said, winking as he grabbed his jacket.
"You're not going?" I asked Geraldine, who was seated on the love seat.
"No dear. I need to make dinner. But ye go with Phil. Ye will have craic once ye meet the guys."
I nodded. "Bye Geraldine." I said, as I went out the front door, bumping into Sean on the way. "Oh, you're still here?" I asked, smiling up at him.
He nodded. "Don't sound surprised. I'm always here. I live right across that block. I was just going to get the bread Geraldine made."
I smiled. "I'll see you around?"
He nodded. "Tomorrow's your first day of school at Lumen Christi. Of course ye will."
I laughed and went straight to the car where Phil was smiling at me.
-----
"Ye getting a ride with Paul back home am I right?" Gemma asked, as she pulled in the studio parking lot.
I nodded. "Thanks Gemma." I shouted, hoping she heard me over the music.
Gemma nodded and honked her horn as she drove off. I grabbed my back pack and walked to the studio.
"Hey Damo! How have ye been?" The security guard asked.
"I've been great! Just got a lot of home work to do. Nothing new." I smiled, as he opened the door to let me in.
"Ah, good kid." The security guard said. "They are all in studio B this time."
"Thanks Connor." I walked as fast as I could to studio B.
"HEY DAMO!" "DAMIAN!" "OH NO! THE MCGINTY KID IS BACK!" "DAMIAN, HOW ARE YE?!!"
I laughed. This was great. I haven't seen the guys in a while and it was just like home again.
-----
"Here we are."
I was greeted by the studio parking lot. It looked warm and cozy in there and it was just what I needed. Phil put the heater on, but I was still cold. Phil parked the car and we got out.
"Hiya Connor." Phil said, as a burly security guard let us in.
"Studio B." Connor said, winking at me.
We walked in a haste and as soon as Phil opened the door, shouts started erupting.
"PHIL IS BACK!" "COULTER!" "NOW WE CAN GET STARTED!" "KEITH! WHAT DID YOU BREAK!?"
I laughed. I had a feeling I was going to like them.
"Hey lads. What's the craic?" Phil asked, as he took off his jacket.
"Phil. Nice to have ye back. Hot chocolate?" A woman with blonde hair asked.
"No, not for me Sharon, but maybe Toni would like some." He said, gesturing to me.
"Who's this, Coulter?" A young man with blonde hair asked.
"Lads, this is Toni. My adopted daughter." He added, winking at me.
I smiled at all of them.
"Hi, I'm George Donaldson. Nice to meet ye." A tall man said, smiling warmly and extending his hand.
I smiled. "Toni. Nice to meet you." I shook it and went to the next man.
"Ryan Kelly." A tall, dark haired man said. "How ye likin' Ireland so far?"
I chuckled. "Well the weather is certainly the opposite of California."
He smiled and shook my hand. "Definitely so."
"Paul Byrom is the name. Ye might have seen me around." The next man said. "I'm the best of the five. George is the oldest, and Ryan is next." He laughed. "Ye have seen me around California, yes?"
I shook my head. "No, I don't believe so."
He sighed. "Let me set ye straight. There is this guy, impersonating me. His name is Tom Cruise? A lot of people have mistaken me and him. Don't worry. I'm the real thing." He added with a wink.
I laughed. "Pleasure to meet you, Paul."
The blonde haired guy was next. "Keith Harkin at your service." He looked at Paul. "Don't listen to "Tom" over there. So how are ye?"
I laughed. "I'm good."
This was the moment I was waiting for. I struggled to fight the giggles coming up. I moved on the youngest of the five. He was really tall and much more amazing up close.
"Damian. Damian McGinty." He said, extending his hand.
I smiled. "Toni." I took my hand and shook his.
"Nice to meet ye." He said, still holding my hand.
"Back at you." I replied.
It was pretty awkward. The rest of them were laughing because we were still holding hands. I decided to break it. I took my hand away and cleared my throat.
"Uhm, so hot chocolate?" I said, looking at Sharon.
Sharon smiled. "Nice to meet ye, dear." She said, as she handed me my hot chocolate.
"Thank you." I said, as I turned around and sat by Phil, hiding my burning cheeks.
-----
When Phil and Toni came in, nothing else mattered. I honestly couldn't wait to introduce myself to her as we all lined up. The minute we shook hands, I couldn't think. Then I realized we were still holding hands and everybody else was smiling.
She took her hand away and went to grab hot chocolate. I met Phil's eyes and he was smiling. Then I met Paul's eyes and he was rolling them. I laughed. Can today get any better?

I sat on the floor, criss-crossed and wrapped in Phil's jacket, happily drinking my hot chocolate and texting all my friends back home to tell them how everything was going.
"Okay, Damo. Why don't ye start us off with Home? And then we'll go from there." I heard Phil say as he checked the soundboard. The mere mention of Damian's name made me look up from my phone. I looked at him. He was seated on the table with the rest of the guys and he seemed to be doing his homework or something because many textbooks were occupying the table.
"Aye." Damian said, closing his textbook and making his way to the stage.
"Alright. Well lights and zoom one in on Damo." As soon as Phil said those words, the whole studio became dark.
"AW MAN! NOW I CAN'T SEE!" A voice cried out, probably Paul.
I saw Phil look over at the table. He was smiling. "Ye have a problem with that Byrom?"
I smiled and looked at "Tom". He was shaking his head. "Nah, I'm good Coulter."
Phil chuckled and grabbed the microphone. "PLAYBACK!"
And then the music started. I looked at Damian and I caught him looking at me. It was really sweet because at that moment I met his eyes, he quickly looked away.
Another summer day has come and gone away In Paris or Rome... but I wanna go home
That did it. It hasn't been 10 seconds in the song yet, and I've already had goosebumps. I looked around to see if anybody else was entranced like I was. The rest of Celtic Thunder were playing with cards and Phil was too busy with the sound board. Apparently I was the only one really into the song. Well, me and Damian. Gosh, just the mere mention of his name made me happy.
I watched him carefully as he sang his way through the song. He really was cute. The song finally ended. I guess I was high off of his presence because next thing I knew, I was up on my feet, loudly cheering him on.
The lights finally went on and every head was turned to me. My cheeks burned and I was embarrassed. I looked at Phil for help and Phil laughed and stood up and grabbed the microphone.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, my daughter, Toni."
Everybody chuckled and I laughed and sank back down to my sanctuary, foolishly covering myself with BOTH jackets.
"Keith, you're up next." I heard Phil say, followed by many sighs. The lights turned off again and I quickly took off the jackets and ran to Phil.
"Um, nobody saw that, did they?" I whispered.
He chuckled. "No, no they did not." He said, laughing.
I nodded. "Great."
He chuckled. "Don't worry. The lads are more embarrassing. We're all just used to it."
I smiled grimly. "Thanks. I mean, the song DESERVED it. It was amazing."
He laughed. "Why don't ye make yourself at home with them at the table? I'm sure they will be glad to have ye. Make ye laugh and everything."
I shook my head. "I don't know."
"Toni, we have two more hours here, I doubt ye would be entertained sitting down on the floor." He sighed. "The guys are great craic."
"Fine." I said. I wasn't afraid to go up to them and start a conversation. I was afraid that I would embarrass myself in front of them. I made my way to the table, where they were all playing a game of cards.
"Hello there." Ryan said, smiling up at me as he shuffled the cards.
"Hi." I said, returning the smile. "So what are you guys playing?"
"Nothing, really." George said. "We're just watching Paul and Ryan and seeing who can make the biggest house of cards."
I laughed. "Who's winning so far?"
Paul chuckled. "Tom is, of course." He said, winking at me. "Why don't ye pull up a chair and watch, Toni? Must be better than sitting down on the floor wrapped in a jacket and texting."
I smiled. "You saw that?"
He chuckled. "We all did."
I nodded. "Of course."
Damian went and grabbed a chair on the nearest table. "Here ye go." He said, smiling at me and gesturing to the chair.
I laughed. "Thank you."
He gave me a smile. "It's no problem whatsoever."
Good thing it was dark, because my cheeks were hot. I sat down and watched Keith sing. He was a pretty good singer, as well. The song was amazing, but it was pretty sad.
After all that we've been through, I will make it up to you. I promise to. And after all that's been said and done, You're just the part of me I can't let go.
"AW MAN!" Paul shouted, as I watched his house of cards topple on the table.
"I WIN!" Ryan yelled. "I ALWAYS DO!"
George shook his head and looked at me. "This is how they always are on a daily basis. . . I'm sorry."
I smiled. "It's no problem. It's entertaining."
Damian laughed. I decided it was time to break the barrier.
"So, did you know you're a really good singer?" I asked, looking at him.
The brown eyes met the blue. He chuckled as he met my eyes. "Yes, I have heard that before."
I smiled. "Yeah, obviously I enjoyed it."
He laughed. "To tell ye the truth, I haven't had such an enthusiastic reception when we practice."
I shook my head, blushing. "Yeah, well.. I'm pretty enthusiastic when it comes to things I like."
He looked at me confused. "Ye like me?"
I looked down. "Your singing. I mean. Uh. Yeah. So. Um."
He got the hint and he looked down. I smiled because I saw the blush appearing on his cheeks. I cleared my throat as the lights turned on.
He cleared his throat in return. I smiled and cleared my throat, again. He looked at me and cleared his throat. I laughed and cleared my throat.
"DO YE WANT WATER OR SOMETHING!?" Paul yelled as he watched us in delight.
We both laughed and looked at Paul. Damian shook his head and said, "We're good, Paul."
I laughed, making a mental note in my head to never forget to thank Phil for making me "socialize" with them.
-----
You have no idea how embarrassed I was once I said the words, "Ye like me?" to Toni. I realized my mistake once I said those words. 1. She probably thinks I'm rushing into things too quick. 2. She probably thinks I'm rushing into things too quick. 3. She probably thinks I'm rushing into things too quick.
"Damo, can ye get me some hot chocolate?" Ryan asked, breaking the intensity of the silence.
I nodded. "Be right back." I said, talking to the whole group, but only looking at one person. She met my eyes and smiled. I breathed a sigh in relief. A smile. A very beautiful smile. Things were going good, I guess.
I made my way to Sharon. "Hey Sharon, are there any more drinks left?"
She nodded. "They're with the water, but be careful, they're pretty hot."
I nodded. "Thanks." I went to the table filled with refreshments and grabbed hot chocolate. It was hot, I must admit, and I accidentally scorched myself and spilled some on the ground. And the rest of my shirt.
"That's not good." A voice said behind me, chuckling. I turned around and saw Toni holding some napkins. "Need any help?" She asked, handing me napkins.
I nodded. "Thanks. I owe ye, big time."
She laughed, giving me more napkins. "Nah, you owe me more than that. You need to give me all of your money and your house, okay? I'll be picking up the money tomorrow."
I looked up, not knowing if she was serious or not. I had my answer as I watched her smile at me.
She laughed and said, "I'm not joking, you know."
I chuckled. "Okay what about this? Tomorrow, I'll pay ye what I owe ye, but not including money."
She looked at me. "That's no fun."
I chuckled and said, "I think I'm dried off."
She nodded. "Good for you. But I don't really know if you're lying or not."
I looked at her. "I can assure ye I'm NOT lying."
She scoffed. "And how do I know you're not lying when you said that? I honestly don't know if I'm going to see you tomorrow. See how things work?"
I smiled. "Well I have a better idea."
She raised her eyebrows. "Oh and that is?"
I looked at her seriously. "I guess I'm going to have to give ye my number then."
She smiled. "And what makes you think I want it?"
I looked at her and chuckled. "Well I normally don't give my number to people I just met, so consider yourself lucky."
She laughed and took out her phone. "And your number is?"
-----
When Damian asked to give me his number, I literally just wanted to jump around and scream. But no way to lose my cool. After he gave me his number, we both laughed and then it got quiet. Again.
"Come on, Toni. Time to go." Phil said, grabbing his jacket and putting it on.
I looked at my phone. "It's been two hours already?"
Phil nodded. "Damo, ye have a ride?" I looked at Damian, carefully to hide the eagerness on my face.
He nodded. "I'm going with Paul."
"OH YEAH! DAMO! I FORGOT! I'M GOING TO TYRONE WITH RYAN REAL QUICK SO I CAN'T TAKE YE HOME. WE'D BE BACK AT MIDNIGHT OR SO!" Paul yelled across the room.
Damian sighed. "I guess not."
Phil laughed. "Come with us."
I looked at Phil and he winked at me. I suddenly felt more appreciation towards Phil than I had before. Which was saying a lot.
"Let me just grab my jacket." Damian said, running to get his jacket at the table.
"Thank you." I said to Phil, beaming with delight.
Phil nodded. "No problem." He said. "I'll wait for ye by the car. Wait for Damian, okay? I just have to start it." And with those words, he rushed out of the room.
"Where's Phil?" Damian said, putting on his jacket. I looked at his jacket and looked down with disappointment. Damian looked at me, because I wasn't responding.
"What's wrong?" He asked, his face filled with confusion.
I clicked my tongue. "You can't ride with us anymore."
He looked at me. "And why is that?"
I looked down and muttered, "I didn't know you supported Manchester United."
He chuckled. "You're a Liverpool fan?"
I nodded, "A PROUD one."
He sighed. "I don't know if I can be friends with a Liverpool fan. But ye and Ryan will get along just find then."
I shook my head. "You can walk home."
He smiled and raised his eyebrows. "I guess I can break the rules just once. For ye. Consider yourself lucky."
I laughed. "C'mon Manchester United, let's go."
-----
Words cannot express how disappointed I felt when Toni told me her true feelings about ManU. All the same, it was pretty amusing.
"Ye got your jacket, Damo?" Phil asked as we entered the car.
I nodded, putting on my seat belt as Toni climbed on the front seat.
"Hey Phil, you need to find a new Damian. Who cares if he sings good, he doesn't support Liverpool." Toni said, smiling at me through the rear view mirror. I smiled back and Phil started driving.
The ride was pretty quiet. It consisted of Phil asking me for directions to my house, looking at Toni through the rear view mirror, meeting eyes with her, clearing throats, looking at Toni, talking to Phil, and looking at Toni.
"Here ye are, Damian. Ye don't live far from us, I just noticed." Phil said, parking on the curb.
"Thanks Phil. Bye Toni." I said, looking at her through the rear view mirror. She waved and smiled. I chuckled and got out of the car, waiting for the Subaru to drive off before I went inside.
-----
We got home and ate dinner. Geraldine prepared chili and bread and I didn't want to be rude, but I had to tell both of them that I was a vegetarian. Geraldine quickly made salad and apologized for the misunderstanding. It was pretty embarrassing considering I didn't want to be rude, but I couldn't not be a vegetarian any more.
"The salad was delicious, Geraldine." I said, trying to make an attempt to get back in their good graces.
Geraldine laughed and said, "Go get some rest sweetie, ye have a big day tomorrow."
I sighed. "Oh yeah, school."
Phil laughed. "Good night."
I smiled and made my way up the stairs. As soon as I reached my room, I quickly changed and hurried off to sleep. It was only 8:30, but I have trouble falling asleep fast. I was about to crash when I heard my phone beep.
I grabbed it, thankful because I forgot to set my alarm anyway, and I started to beam. The Liverpool hater just texted me.
Damian: Hey ManU hater. U mke it home k?
I smiled. He would.
I replied: Yeah, thx. so wuts up?
I got a reply in seconds.
Damian: nothin. so wuts the craic with u?
I smiled and replied: nothing much.
It was at least 10 seconds until I received another reply.
Damian: remembr, i.o.u
I rolled my eyes and replied: yea sure. but i hafta go. hav a big day 2moro.
He replied back immediately: ok=] sweet dreams.
I couldn't believe it. It was my first day in Ireland, and I was already falling for a guy. Great.

I woke up earlier than my alarm, which never really happens to me. The last time I remembered waking up earlier than usual, it was the day of the first Celtic Thunder concert. Now all through these years I have been exhausted because I’ve been overworking or just plain tired. And I’m only seventeen!
Anyways, there was a special reason why I woke up. An idea came to me, but I had to work fast. I hastily took a quick shower and changed my clothes, not bothering to fully dry myself. I rushed downstairs and headed straight to the kitchen.
“Damo? What are ye doing up so early? Gemma’s not even up yet.” Emmett said, looking up from the newspaper he was reading.
I nodded distractedly, grabbing a wee bit of toast and butter. I couldn’t find the time to explain, but I knew it would be worth it.
“Is that all you’re going to eat?” Emmett said, looking at me, knowing full well this wouldn’t make me last through the whole day. “What has gotten into ye?”
“Nothing.” I said, getting up to grab a glass to fill with orange juice. “Just gotta do something.”
He raised his eyebrows. “Ye gotta do something at 5:00 in the mornin’?”
Well if he puts it that way, I know I must be crazy. But I couldn’t sleep at all. This is just one of the things you HAVE to do. I couldn’t find the words to explain so I just nodded.
“Well what are ye gonna do?” He pressed, folding his newspaper and crossing his arms.
“I, uh, don’t know yet.” And with those words, I grabbed my backpack and headed out the door.
“Wait! Damo!” Emmett said, as he rushed after me.
I stopped in my tracks, careful not to think about how much time was being wasted. I looked at the sky, praying that it wouldn’t rain today.
“What’s the rush? Where are ye going?” He asked, as he finally caught up to me.
“To Sean’s.” I said, tapping my feet to show how impatient I was getting.
“Ye know ye can’t take the car out, Gemma needs it for work.” He said, looking at me with a confused expression. “And by the way, it’s too early. I don’t want ye to disturb Sean and I sure as goodness won’t let my little brother walk around Derry at 5 in the morning.” He said skeptically.
I already had my answers. “Just tell Gemma not to worry, I’ll walk to school. Sean doesn’t live far from school. And I’ll finish breakfast at his house, it’s nothing.” I shrugged. “Sean’s just down the road, Emmett. He actually told me to come by.”
His expression saw right through my lie. “At 5:30 in the morning?”
I nodded. “Teenagers.” I said.
“WILL YE KEEP IT DOWN?!” A voice inside yelled. I wasn’t sure if I should be happy or mad to see my sister descending down the stairs in her pajamas. It was a good thing because she will surely keep Emmett occupied, but it was also a bad thing because Gemma doesn’t like to wake up early and it just reminded me of how much time was lost.
“I’ll see ye after school.” I said, sprinting off down the street.
-----
I have been awake since 5 in the morning. I honestly could not sleep. I was nervous and anxious to get the day over with. At first I forgot what day it was, but then I started to feel less groggy and more nervous. The only thing to make me forget for just a few seconds is re-reading the conversation Damian and I had last night through text messaging. I couldn’t take it anymore. At around 5:30 I was already dressed and ready for school. Phil and Geraldine aren’t even awake yet. Which leaves me sitting down on the loveseat in the living room for 30 minutes, waiting for one of them to descend the stairs.
I was too busy looking at my phone when I heard a yawn coming down the stairs. “Ye already awake?”
I turned and saw Phil’s wide-eyed expression. “Couldn’t sleep. I had breakfast and everything, too.”
He smiled. “Ye will have a grand day, Toni. Nothing to worry about.”
I was contemplating on what he said, until I heard the doorbell ring. I looked at the grandfather clock. Who on earth would come at this hour?
“I’ll get it.” I said, as Phil headed to the kitchen. I fixed my clothes and opened the door, being face to face with none other than Declan himself.
I grinned. “Your reason for being here so early?”
He chuckled. “Your reason for being fully dressed?”
“I’m American. There’s my reason. Your turn.” I challenged.
“I’m Irish.”
We both stood at the doorway, smiling at each other.
“Ah, Declan! Come on in!” Phil called from the kitchen.
I stood, staying where I was.
“Erm, can I come in?” Declan said, with a humorous expression. “I believe I was invited in.”
I stood there. “You still didn’t explain why on earth you’re here early. Being Irish is not an excuse.”
He smiled. “Well being American isn’t either, so I guess we’re in the same boat on this one.” He held up a basket. “I brought muffins.” He said in a pleading voice. “No one can’t turn down free muffins.”
I sighed and gave up. “Come on in.”
He went inside and closed the door behind him. We just stayed there, rooted at the spot, eyeing each other beadily.
“Can I help ye, Miss Coulter?” He said in a drawl.
I smiled as he used my new last name. “I’m just trying to figure out what kind of person visits before 6:00 in the morning.”
He pointed to himself. “The kind of person that wants to see ye, that’s who.” And he patted my back and headed to the kitchen, chuckling as my cheeks burned red.
-----
My plan was ruined, which makes me extra super grumpy. Now here I am, actually making my way to Sean’s house instead of the Coulter’s. Originally my plan was to go over to Phil’s and take Toni for a walk and just hang out. But as I made my way over there, I saw another person who was standing at the doorway, talking to Toni, who apparently was fully dressed. Was everybody waking up early today?
I saw them from a distance, careful to hide behind some hedges to get a better look. They were both smiling and laughing, just standing there at the doorway. Then it looked like she reluctantly let him in. That part made me smile. It shows that maybe she wasn’t happy to see him. But then she smiled, which made me frown again.
As the door closed, I kicked a nearby tree, letting my anger out. It didn’t really help because the pain made me more angry then I was. Now I had one hour to myself, and I couldn’t go back to the house because I wasn’t ready to face Emmett in the mood I was in. So I decided to follow my lie and go to Sean’s house, knowing full well he wouldn’t ask as many questions about why I showed up at his house at 6. It was around the time where walking to and from somebody’s else house was no big deal. Man, I really hated karma.
I walked and walked. People were already out, going to the nearby market or just to enjoy the sunrise. Here in Derry, people rarely used cars to get around that much. The scenery was just too beautiful, and the roads were always nearly filled with cars or they were sometimes to slippery from the constant rain. Or they were just narrow.
“Good mornin’ Mr. McGinty.” Mrs. Lynch, an elderly, kind woman, said.
I nodded, trying to smile. I wasn’t trusting my mood right now. Who knows what could happen when I opened my mouth. I wanted to spare Mrs. Lynch.
“Where are ye headed off, lad?” She pressed, stopping in her tracks.
I cursed silently. This wasn’t going to work. I had to answer her one way or another. I swallowed and said, “Off to Sean’s, Mrs. Lynch.”
She nodded. “Sean? Sean Clarke by the lake? All the way over there?” She looked at me like I was crazy. “That’s a long way off.”
I ignored the last part. Whatever she said didn’t change anything because she didn’t have a car to take me, even if she wanted to. Just casual conversation. My stomach grumbled.
“Oh dear, did ye eat breakfast yet?” She asked in a worried voice. Maybe my bad mood was set off because I was hungry. But I knew she was going to offer something to eat. The Irish never turn down an opportunity to be good neighbors.
I nodded. I guess I could just see Sean at school. I looked at Mrs. Lynch. She beckoned me over and then we started to walk the opposite direction.
“Don’t be shy, Damo. You’re a nice lad. My granddaughter is actually at the house and she is very hard to ignore.” She chuckled. “Tá tú fáilte i gcónaí.”
I didn’t know what that meant so I just nodded. She looked at me and translated, “Ye are always welcome.”
We walked together. Then I realized the distance from school and her house wasn’t that far. I couldn’t be late even if I wanted to. We reached her house, a tiny house with a barn far off. Typical Irish home. The very best.
“Watch your step.” She said, as she pointed out the 2 steps leading from the ground to the porch. She opened the door and said in a clear voice, “Dia duit.”
I then heard another voice coming from the kitchen, from the looks of it. “Fáilte ar ais mhamó.”
I heard that voice before. I smiled as I met the blue eyes of none other than Alice herself. It really is a small world after all.
-----
After turning down breakfast from Phil constant times and not bothering to grab a muffin himself, I was genuinely interested in why Declan even came here, if not to have breakfast. From the looks of it, Phil was just as interested.
“Declan, lad, not to be rude or anything. But why are ye here? I thought a good breakfast was what ye needed, but I’m afraid not.”
Declan looked at me with a smirk. “Phil, to be perfectly honest, I came by to ask your daughter if she wanted a walk to school.” I blushed, looking around for an excuse to do something.
Phil smiled and looked at me. “Will ye be permitting him, Toni?”
I looked up, meeting Declan’s pleading eyes. “I suppose so.” The air was so awkward. It was like Declan was asking to marry me, instead of just walking me to school. “Let me just grab my things.”
Phil nodded and looked at Declan. I quickly went to the living room and grabbed my backpack.
“So, do ye like her?”
That sentence alone made me stop in my tracks and wait for Declan’s voice to answer.
“She’s certainly something different.”
“Ah because she’s American, Declan.” Phil said, chuckling.
Declan started to laugh. I mean I guess it wasn’t an interesting conversation to eavesdrop on, considering my past, but it certainly did get me wondering. He didn’t say yes, nor did he say no. I opened the door. “I’m ready.”
Declan got up and looked at Phil. “Enjoy the muffins.”
Phil smiled and got up to grab the butter from the fridge. “Enjoy the walk.”
And with those words, we went and left the house. “You know, you were being a kiss up, bringing Phil muffins.”
We walked and he kicked a nearby pebble. “Just wanted him to warm up so he can’t say no.”
I watched as the pebble disappeared by some bushes. “Why did you even want to walk me to school? I barely know you. For all I know you could be kidnapping me and taking me hostage.”
He laughed at my sentence. “Or maybe I wanted to get to know ye better.”
I smirked and kicked a nearby pebble, mimicking his moves, although it didn’t go as far off as I intended it to.
“Do ye play football? Or soccer in America?” He asked, watching the pebble land inches ahead of us.
I shook my head. “Good.” He said, shoving me playfully. “If ye did, here in Ireland, ye would be shamed for a long time, let me tell ye.”
“I’m not really into sports.” I said. “I do watch them though.”
He looked at me. “Ye like Liverpool, don’t ye?”
I smiled, “Yeah. Do you?”
He nodded. “Of course.”
I started thinking. If he liked Liverpool, then we would actually have more in common than I thought. It was worth a try, after all.
We walked in silence. “See, you’re getting to know me already.” I said, bumping into him.
He laughed. “So what did ye think?”
I kicked another pebble, with the same results I had before. Great. “About what?” I said, looking at the direction of the pebble.
“The conversation with Phil and me. In the kitchen.” I looked at him in surprise.
“You knew I was listening?”
He nodded. “I’m a very perceptive person.” He chuckled.
I smiled, avoiding his question. Truth was, I was already smitten with another person, but let’s just see where this day takes us. Because when Declan came over, I completely forgot it was my first day, but as the view of the school came closer, all I wanted was to run the other direction.
