The wheels of the large air bus plane touched down on the tarmac with a screech and a puff of smoke from the burning rubber. Savannah woke abruptly, rubbing the sleep out of her hazel colored eyes as she looked out the window. The day in Galway, Ireland was as she suspected dreary and rainy. The vacation brochures only showed the sunny bright side, the rolling green hills and the crashing seas. She sighed placing her chin in the palm of her hand.
“We’re here Savy!,” her best friend Taylor exclaimed.
“I can see that Tay, thanks,” she replied rolling her eyes at the ridiculous nickname he called her.
“Cheer up! Soon we will be on our way to the little outer lying villages and some good pubs with great beer,” his blue eyes lit up at the word.
Savannah laughed despite her feeling cramped in the coach seat. Her 5’10 frame had not enjoyed the 10 hour flight. Her dark chestnut hair was pulled back in a loose braid, she could feel the oil from the long flight building in it,” A hot shower and stiff drink is just the ticket.”
“Come on, let’s get the heck off of this plane,” Taylor stood up leading the way to get their bags out of the over head compartment.
Savannah followed suit to her friend as the passengers all began to de-board. She could feel the chill in the jet way that was connected to the plane. She pulled her sweater tighter around her. She had just graduated from college at the age of 27, her degree in education. The trip to Ireland was a present to herself. Taylor had wanted to go and there was no way she could tell him no, they had been friends since middle school. Now she was looking forward to 3 weeks of relaxing and exploring the Irish country side. They made their way through customs and then on to claim their bags. They sat outside the airport as Taylor lit up a Marlboro light.
“God that tastes good,” he said inhaling deeply.
“That is such a nasty habit Tay,” Savannah scolded playfully.
“And I enjoy every second of it”, he blew out a puff of smoke and inhaled another long drag.
Savannah watched him for a while growing more frustrated, “Can you smoke that thing any slower?”
“Sorry I have been cooped up on a plane for ten hours, with no cigarettes I might add. I’m thoroughly intending on enjoying every bit of this one.”
“I just want a bed”, she said leaning back against the wall.
“Try to get a cab while I finish this.”
Savannah groaned as she pulled herself away from the wall and walked to the edge of the sidewalk. She stuck her hand out waving it up and down trying to hail a cab. A mid size blue van finally stopped. The lit up taxi signed burned brightly against the steely sky.
“Where will I be taking you? “, the driver asked in a thick brogue.
“McNeilly’s bed and breakfast”, Savannah replied.
“Know just where it is”, the round older man gave a cheery smile,” Climb in and I’ll get your bags.”
“Thanks”, she smiled,” Taylor! Let’s go”, she called to her friend.
Taylor quickly stamped out his cigarette and climbed into the backseat with Savannah.
“Where are you all visiting from?”, the driver asked pulling out into traffic.
“Tulsa, Oklahoma,” Taylor answered.
“Never been to the states my self. My name’s Charlie by the way.”
“Charlie, I’m Taylor and this sleepy head here is Savannah.”
“Nice to meet you both,” he said cheerily.
“Say Charlie, are there any good pubs near our bed and breakfast?”, Savannah asked.
The driver laughed,” You’re in Ireland dear, there are plenty of good pubs here.”
“Walked into that one”, she smiled.
“There’s one called Nikki’s Tavern with in walking distance of the b-n-b. Usually have singing and loads of people. Food is great too.”
“Sounds like fun to me”, Savannah yawned,” After a nap anyway.”
The remainder of the ride was quiet except for Charlie’s cheerful humming. Savannah and Taylor both looked out the window at the passing scenery. The city went from tall buildings to quaint shops and then cottages dotted the landscape. The cab pulled up to one of the larger cottages. It was two stories, painted a light blue, and a small sign read McNeilly’s in green script. Charlie helped them to unload their bags and wished them well. They made their way inside. The house was warm and welcoming. The scent of fresh baked bread permeated the room.
“Hello there”, a young woman with short dark hair and hazel eyes greeted them,” My name’s Lauren, how may I help you?”
“Savannah Flanagan and Taylor Hanson, we have a reservation for two rooms”, Savannah replied.
“We’ve been expecting you! So glad you made it in okay,” she beamed,” We have two rooms adjoined by the bathroom. Suites number four and five,” she made a few quick strokes on the keyboard,” here are your keys,” she finished with explaining the location of their rooms.
“This is beautiful!”, Savannah sighed walking down the garden path,” This is going to be perfect for relaxing and enjoying nature.”
“When the sun comes out”, Taylor laughed.
They were in their rooms and settled shortly before noon. Savannah lay on the bed and before she realized it she was fast asleep.
Ryan Kelly closed his brief case at his father’s accounting firm. Another nine to five day gone by. It was the weekend and for that he was grateful. He smiled as he thought about his performance scheduled at Nikki’s Tavern. He may have a degree in accounting, but his heart was in the music. He sang each weekend at different pubs. He ran a hand through his short black hair as he made his way out to his car. The wind whipped about as he climbed into the suv. He drove home humming a tune he would sing later. He lived in the edge of town in a roomy four bedroom house that he had inherited when his grandfather passed away. He looked forward to building a fire and relaxing before heading out again. Once at home he changed into a pair of jeans and an old sweat shirt and went out to the log pile. He built a toasty fire and settled into his favorite recliner. He sipped on the warm liquid and felt the stress from the work week slowly lift from his body.
Savannah was awakened by a pounding on the bathroom door that connected her room with Taylor’s,” Sav wake up, I’m hungry!” Taylor called.
She got up and slowly rubbed her eyes, she opened the door glaring at him,” I hate you.”
He flashed a grin,” I’m starving! Let’s go to that tavern Charlie mentioned.”
“I just want to sleep”, she whined.
“Come on Savannah don’t make me use your middle name Flanagan. Throw something on and we’ll go get trashed and come home to pass out.”
“I really don’t like you right now.”
“Yes you do” he planted a kiss on her forehead,” Get dressed and let’s go.
Savannah gave in and took her items into the bathroom. She relished in the hot water and steam of the shower as she washed her hair. She wrapped a towel around her as she decided what to wear. She chose a pair of loose fit jeans with a simple white button down, accompanied by a leather jacket and a pair of black boots with a chunky heel. She allowed her hair to dry naturally and pulled it away from her face fastening the sides with small barrettes. The rest she left down.
“Ready?” she said opening the door to Taylor’s room.
“Bout dang time woman,” he sat up and slipped his wallet into his back pocket. He was dressed in black jeans with a cream colored sweater,” Looking to pick up an Irishman tonight?” he teased.
Savannah laughed,” If I can’t get a man in America what makes you think I can get one here?”
“Just saying”, he held up his hands defensively and laughed.
They chatted on their short walk to the little tavern. The light had faded and the small lamps lit the roadside. As they approached the small stone building the scent of beer and pipe tobacco emanated from the front door. Wood smoke curled slowly from the chimney, thick colored glass blurred the ability to see inside.
“Irish tavern on a Friday night”, Taylor said.
“It looks great!” Savannah replied as they made their way through the door. They were greeted with laughter, talking, and soft music.
“Welcome to Nikki’s Tavern”, a young blonde woman smiled brightly,” just two of you?”
“Yes please”, Savannah answered.
“Follow me”, she led them to a booth near the small stage,” Our specials for tonight are shepard’s pie and beef stew. Plenty of good beer and stout on tap.”
“Sounds wonderful,” Savannah replies,” Can I get a whiskey on the rocks?”
“Indeed you can”, the girl laughed,” for you lad?”
“Guinness sounds perfect.”
“Coming right up”, she left the table.
“Going straight for the hard stuff huh?” Taylor said as he took in their surroundings.
“I’m an Irish girl and I enjoy my drinks so thank you.”
“Wonder if someone’s singing”, he nodded toward the stage.
“Local guy named Ryan Kelly,” the waitress answered placing their drinks on the table,” Have you decided on your dinner?”
“I think I’m having the beef stew”, Savannah answered.
“Make it two”, Taylor replied.
“Great! Can I make a few more drinks for you?”
“Absolutely!” Taylor smiled,” and some water as well.”
“Will do and show starts at 7:30.”
Savannah and Taylor nursed their drinks and the waitress brought more.
Ryan had spotted the chestnut haired beauty the moment he walked into the tavern. She was seated near the stage with a man. He had watched them for a few minutes and had not seen any intimate gestures. He watched as she brought the small glass of amber colored liquid to her lips. Must be an Irish girl in order to drink whiskey straight. He was brought out of his daze by a shove against his shoulder.
“Ryan, you’re on in ten minutes”, his friend Keith said roughly.
“Yeah I know”, he answered,” Ever seen her before?”, he gestured to the girl.
“Not round here no,” Keith answered,” She’s a looker though.”
“Back off Harkin, I saw her soon as we walked in.”
“Relax Kelly, not my type," he laughed," You’re up pal.”
“Ladies and gentlemen, Nikki’s is proud to welcome our very own Ryan Kelly!”
“Thank you”, Ryan said sitting on a small stool provided,” Always great to be here with my friends,” he gestured to the audience,” and of course Keith on guitar and Paul on piano,” the two guys behind him gave a wave,” thought I’d start the night with an old favorite, Desperado.”
Savannah felt her pulse begin to race at the first chords of the song.
“Desperado, why don’t you come to your senses, been out ridin fences for so long now”, Ryan sang.
“It’s okay Savannah,” Taylor gave her hand a squeeze.
It was too late Savannah could not stop the tears that streamed from her eyes. Her father’s face flashed before her eyes as the song continued. It had been his favorite song and played at his funeral. It had not been this haunting version though. Ryan’s voice gave it a raw emotion and tenderness that she felt shake her to the core.
Taylor watched as his best friend struggled to compose herself. She was trying to control her breathing and the shaking of her hands, all he could do was whisper words of encouragement. As the song came to a close Savannah fled the table to the restroom.
Ryan had watched the beautiful mystery girl cry and then leave the table. He had to stop himself from running after her. He launched into his next song, one about being a heart breaker.
Savannah splashed water over her face and took several deep breaths ,” Two years,” she said quietly,” two years and a song can rip the wound open again,” she refused to let the memories consume her in such a public place. She knew she would cry herself to sleep. She finished quickly and made her way back to the table.
“You okay Savy?”, Taylor asked his eyes full of concern.
“Yeah”, she forced a smile,” didn’t expect that to happen.”
He nodded,” The food’s great, have some.”
Savannah complied nibbling at her beef stew. She chugged the rest of her second glass and requested more. She sipped the warm liquid she looked towards the stage for the first time. The eyes that looked back caused her to quickly avert her gaze to her food. They were blue, bluer than any she’d ever seen including Taylor’s.
“What the heck was that?”, Taylor looked towards the stage and then back at Savannah.
“Is he still staring?”
“Staring is an understatement,” he laughed,” I think he’s aiming to drill holes in your head.”
“He’s gorgeous Tay”, she said quietly taking a moment to look again. His hair was black, short, and slightly spiked. He wore all black which made the blue eyes stand out even more. He smiled while singing showing off a set or perfect white teeth. She felt her heart beat accelerate.
“Sav, you’re blushing”, Taylor teased.
“I may need fresh air”, she laughed”, probably just the alcohol.”
“Or the fact that you haven’t had a date in three years.”
“Shut up”, she laughed.
“Thank you everyone!”, Ryan said clearing his throat,” Hang tight and we’ll be back in a bit.”
“We’re hitting the bar”, Keith said.
“Be there in a few”, Ryan responded taking a deep breath. He made his way over to the table where the mystery girl and friend were sitting,” Hello”, smiled.
“Hey there!”, Taylor replied,” You did a great job up there.”
“Oh… thank you. I uh……saw the lady here crying during a song and I um……..just wanted to make sure she was okay.”
Taylor saw his opening and took it,” Are you okay Sav?”
Savannah wanted to be swallowed by the floor, her palms were sweaty and her throat felt dry,” I’m fine”, she smiled up at the singer,” Thank you for asking though.”
“My name is Ryan Kelly”, he extended his hand towards Taylor.
“Taylor Hanson and this shy thing is Savannah Flanagan.”
“Interesting name”, he shook Savannah’s hand next. He felt a jolt of electricity at her hand in his. She must have felt it too as they held each others gaze.
“Ryan, why don’t you join us”, Taylor suggested.
Ryan quickly let go of Savannah’s hand,” I don’t mean to intrude.”
“You’re not at all, have a seat. We’ll get some more drinks. Savy, slide over so Ryan can sit.”
Savannah attributed the lightheadedness she felt to the alcohol and not the scent of Ryan’s cologne as he sat next to her.
“Where are you guys from?”, Ryan asked.
“Oklahoma back in the U.S.”, Taylor answered. He had to stifle a laugh because Savannah was not seemingly coherent.
“Here’s some more drinks. Ryan, your usual Guinness extra stout,” the waitress placed fresh drinks on the table.
Finally something she could speak about with out feeling inadequate,” How can you stand that stuff?”
“Guinness?”, he asked turning his eyes to her. The green flecks in her eyes stood out under the light.
The accent, the Irish accent that slowed from his lips and Savannah was grateful she wasn’t standing due to the new weak feeling in her knees,” Yes Guinness, it tastes like dirt.”
“Then you’re not a true Irish gal”, he flashed another dazzling smile.
“I prefer a good whiskey”, she answered taking a swallow from the new glass.
“She can out drink most guys back home”, Taylor added.
“A girl that can drink with the best of ‘em, always good.”
“Thanks Taylor”, she shot him a glare.
“Just speaking the truth Sav,” he laughed at her obvious discomfort.
“So, you’re from the U.S.?”, Ryan turned his gaze to Savannah.
“Ummm…..yeah, Tulsa Oklahoma”, she nodded.
“What, exactly, brings you to Ireland?”
The way he said Ireland, one more way to find him attractive,” A vacation after graduating from college.”
“Very nice,” he drank more of his beer.
Savannah watched the way his lips moved and allowed her eyes to wander down his neck, she stopped herself and drank more,” Plus all of my heritage is here.”
“It is a beautiful place”, Ryan said watching the light catch the highlites off her hair.
Ryan did not go back on stage, instead he sat with his new found friends. They drank and talked until nearly 2 a.m. Savannah had had too much and Ryan knew it.
“Fantastic first night!”, Taylor said as they made their way out of the tavern.
“I second that!”, Savannah giggled trying to pull her jacket on.
“Let me help”, Ryan said taking the jacket and holding it for her.
“Thank you, you’re sweet”, she smiled sliding her arms into the sleeves.
“All set”, he said placing his hands on her shoulders. He breathed in the warm scent of her perfume, her skin was heated from the alcohol.
“Yeah…. I’m fine”, she answered aware of the weight of his hands on her shoulders and of how close he was to her.
“Can I walk you home?”
“Sure you can!”, Taylor piped up,” I’m going on ahead. See ya in the morning Sav”, he kissed her cheek and walked ahead of the two.
“So you’re staying at McNeilly’s?”, Ryan asked.
“We are”, Savannah said tucking her hair behind her ear,” It’s beautiful.”
“Tis indeed, they’re friends of my parents. They opened the inn when I was about five. Spent a lot of summers there.”
“Bet you had a lot of adventures with all the rooms and places to hide.”
Ryan laughed,” Yeah my siblings and I. We let our selves run wild around that place.”
Savannah felt herself growing sleepy and she stumbled over a rock.
“Careful now”, Ryan caught her under the arms.
“Sorry”, she said quietly,” I get sleepy when I drink.”
“Understandable. Are you all right?”
“Yes”, she answered softly.
They walked quietly the rest of the way, Ryan keeping his hand at Savannah’ selbow just in case,” What room are you in?”
“I’m in suite 4,” she pointed down the walk way,” My room is connected to Taylor’s by the bathroom.”
“How long have you two known each other?”
Savannah laughed,” Since we were about twelve years old. We met at school and became pretty much inseparable. He is literally my best friend.”
Ryan smiled at the story and stopped as they got to her door,” Here you are.”
“Thank you again for walking me home, Ryan. It was nice getting to talk with you”, Savannah said nervously.
“You as well”, he smiled.
“Well…………. Thanks again”, she turned the key in the door.
“What are you doing tomorrow, well technically today?”, he asked quickly.
Savannah was grateful for the dark as it hid the crimson in her cheeks,” Besides sleeping, I’m not sure.”
“Would you like to have dinner with me?”, he held his breath after the words left his lips.
She wanted to throw her arms around his neck and kiss his mouth that was so inviting, instead she replied,” That would be nice.”
Ryan released his breath slowly,” I’ll pick you up around seven then?”
“Sounds good”, she tucked her hair behind her ear again.
“Perfect”, he smiled,” I’ll see you tomorrow night then,” he leaned in kissing her cheek.
“Night,” she said trying to slow her racing heart. Savannah nearly fell as she went inside. Her heart was still hammering and her head was spinning.
“How is Ryan?” Taylor walked in laying himself across the bed.
“Uh…………..well,” she stuttered,” I have a date tomorrow night.”
“What? He asked you out?”
“He did”, she smiled,” and kissed me on the cheek.”
“Sav, that’s great! He better take you some where nice.”
Savannah took off her boots and lay next to Taylor,” I have a date with a gorgeous Irish man.”
Taylor laughed,” I know and you’ve been here for nearly a whole day! Now we just need to find a woman for me.”
This caused a groan from Savannah,” Good night Taylor”, she stood and pulled him onto his feet.
“I do need a woman”, he protested.
“I said good night”, smiled shooing him from the room. She closed the door and rubbed her eyes. She quickly readied herself for bed, as soon as she lay down her eyes were closed.
“What happened to you?”, Keith asked as Ryan helped them to pack up equipment at the tavern.
“I met someone and got side tracked.”
“Mystery girl?”
Ryan smiled,” Indeed, I sat with her and her friend and we talked.”
“What’s her name?”, Paul asked.
“Savannah Flanagan”, he said enjoying the way her name flowed.
“Where she from?”
“The states, which surprised me with her name.”
“You gonna see her again?’, Keith asked as they loaded the cars.
“Tomorrow night for dinner. Not sure where to taker her though,” Ryan answered.
“What ever you do, don’t do the touristy thing,” Keith advised,” Take her to a place the locals would know about, she’ll appreciate it more.”
“Thank you both for all of your friendly questions and advice”, Ryan laughed,” It’s almost 4 am, and I don’t know about you lads, but I am exhausted.”
“I second that”, Paul yawned,” see you gents later”, he gave a wave as he pulled out of the parking lot.
Ryan and Keith followed suit. Ryan drove home thinking about his date with Savannah. He didn’t know how long she would be in Ireland and he didn’t want to waste any time. He had planned out their evening by the time her crawled into bed at five in the morning.
Savannah awoke with the sun streaming through the curtains in her room. She blinked trying to get her eyes to adjust. The room was a sunny yellow with white and blue flowered curtains, a fire place sat at the opposite side of the room. A wood pile was stacked and ready. She stretched and rolled over, it hit her suddenly, The whiskey from the night before was making its return as she rushed to the bathroom and emptied the contents of her stomach several times.
“That’s why you pace yourself darling”, Taylor said opening the bathroom door, he wore only a pair of jeans with no shirt.
“Ugh, shut up”, Savannah said brushing her teeth.
“Do you remember last night? Well namely the guy you met?”
Savannah felt the blood rise in her cheeks as she thought about Ryan Kelly. His blue eyes, the way words flowed from his lips, the perfect mouth, the way he had helped her through her stumbles,” Yes I remember Ryan.”
“Awww, Savy you’re blushing”, Taylor nudged her arm.
“Get some clothes on, you’re nauseating me”, she bantered.
“Ooo harsh hangover and harsh words”, he closed the door chuckling.
Savannah finished up in the bathroom and climbed back into bed. She pulled the comforter up over her head and curled into a fetal position to stem the nausea. She had a date later in the evening and she didn’t want to be sick. She smiled as she remembered Ryan’s obvious nervousness at asking her out, she had been nervous at the slight touch of his hand. She began to drift to sleep as her thoughts meandered,
“You are not sleeping Savannah!”, Taylor said pulling the blanket away from her.
“Tay, I’m hung over, give it back”
“Look, I’ll go get us some breakfast, but you get up and dressed. We are in Ireland and we should explore.”
She sighed,” Fine, I want bagels and strong coffee.”
“That’s a girl”, he tossed the comforter back on the bed,” be back soon.”
Savannah pulled herself up and went to take a shower. The hot water seemed to lessen her headache and the steam helped her nausea. Afterwards she dressed quickly and dried her hair.
“Bagel and strong coffee”, Taylor said as she emerged from the bathroom.
“You are amazing”, she replied taking the bag and the cup from him,” So what are the plans?”
“Well, being that you have a date in oh, six hours, I figured we could just go into town and explore. Maybe see some cool sites.”
“Works for me”, she said happily tearing off a piece of the bagel.
The pair was town by early afternoon. They explored the small shops and took pictures. They enjoyed lunch at an outdoor café that looked out over the town square. The stone on the streets gleamed in the sun light, the flags waved in the cool breeze. The sun moved behind a pale layer of graying clouds.
They were back at the inn by six p.m.,” I only have an hour before Ryan gets here”, Savannah said tossing her bags on the bed.
“He may have been here already”, Taylor said examining a bouquet of fresh wild flowers.
“Is there a card?”
“Yep, let’s see”, he cleared his throat,” Savannah, I will see you at 7 and please enjoy the flowers. They grow in the field near my home.”
Savannah grinned and grabbed the flowers and the card,” Not exactly how I should feel”, she inhaled the sweet fragrance.
“Creeped out or flattered, those would be mine”, Taylor laughed.
“Exactly”, she placed the flowers on the night stand,” Well then, I need to get ready.”
“Don’t forget that you need wardrobe approval”, he said heading to his room.
“Yes sir,” she laughed after him. She let out an audible sigh and began rummaging through her suitcase.
She carefully pieced and outfit together. She wore jeans, with a form fitting, black turtleneck with her black leather jacket. Her ballet style flats made the outfit nice but comfortable. She went to Taylor’s room,” How do I look?”
“Let’s see here”, Taylor stood up and circled her tapping his index finger against his chin,” Just add a little makeup and you’re good to go.”
“Awesome!” she kissed his cheek.
“Your butt looks great in those jeans!”, he teased.
“I know!”, she laughed disappearing into the bathroom.
Taylor followed her,” So what are you guys doing tonight?”, he pulled himself up onto the counter.
“No clue, he just asked me out and set a time.”
“I see,” he sat up straighter,” Okay, remember, no nookie on the first date. A kiss good night is fine, he should pay for you”, he ticked the items off on his fingers.
“Tay, shut up. You sound like my mom.”
“You’re my best friend Sav and I would never forgive myself if something happened to you.”
“I know Taylor and that’s why I love you”, she replied applying a sheer coat of lip gloss as they heard a knock on the door,” Please get that so I can finish up in here.”
“You should leave your hair down, it looks really good”, he slid off the counter and went to let Ryan in,” Come on in”, he said opening the door.
“Thanks”, Ryan said,” Savannah ready?”
Taylor laughed,” She’s a girl, are they ever really ready?”
“Very true,” Ryan echoed Taylor’s laugh.
“She’s a great girl,” Taylor said bringing on a serious tone,” She can be a little fragile at times, but it’s because she’s been through a lot.”
Savannah heard Taylor and rolled her eyes,” It’s just a date Taylor, but thanks for sharing the information with him.”
“Its okay”, Ryan smiled,” he’s being a good friend.”
“I’ll be back later”, she grabbed her things and brushed past Taylor,” ready to go?”, she looked at Ryan.
“If you are”, he answered following behind her,” I respect your friendship with her”, he said to Taylor,” I’m not a bad guy.”
“Thank you for that, have fun”, he closed the door after them. He went back to his own room to change and go out.
“I’m sorry about Taylor, we’re the same age and not related. He can kind of get that big brother attitude”, Savannah apologized as she and Ryan walked down the pathway.
“I understand, I have siblings, a younger sister and I know how I with new guys in her life.”
“At least you’re related though”, she laughed.
“This one’s mine”, he said opening the passenger door of the land rover.
“This is weird, I feel like I should have a steering wheel.”
Ryan laughed as he closed her door,” I’m sure I would feel the same if I went to America”, he said climbing in on the other side.
“So where are we going?
“It’s a surprise”, he flashed a crooked smile.
Savannah felt herself come undone a little more at his smile. His car smelled of him and while she was looking out the window his hand found hers. His fingers were warm and sure as they laced through her own,” You won’t even give me a hint?”
“Not at all, I’m a Kelly and we do not tell a surprise.”
“Fine”, she gave him a wide smile,” but I’ll remember this.
Ryan chuckled as they drove on. They chit chatted about random subjects. He pulled into the parking lot of a dimly lit restaurant and the sign read “Flanagan’s Fine Dining”, Here we are.”
“You did this on purpose”, Savannah laughed.
“Guilty”, Ryan smiled exiting the car and coming around to open the door for her.
“Well thank you”, she said accepting the out stretched hand.
Ryan enjoyed how her hand fit so naturally into his and how she didn’t pull away as he walked closely to her,” I figured you’d have enough of the touristy stuff and want to enjoy some off road cuisine.”
“That is quite perceptive of you Mr. Kelly.”
Ryan held the door as they went inside.
“How may I help you?”, a man dressed in a suit smiled.
“Reservation for two under Kelly”, Ryan answered.
“Ah yes,” the man checked a list,” Come right this way.”
They were seated at a small table next to a window. An oil lantern sat on the end of the end of the table next to the window. The scents in the restaurant were a mixture of sweet and spicy. The hum of low conversations blanketed the air. Ryan watched as the lamp light made Savannah’s eyes sparkle. Her chin rested against her palm as she looked over the menu. Her skin was soft against the lighting and he could not deny the way her shirt hugged her perfectly.
“What’s good here?”, she asked breaking into his thoughts.
“Pretty much everything,” he replied,” this is a family owned place so the food is amazing.”
He could talk all night as far as Savannah cared. His words were like a song, one that she wanted to keep on repeat and never stop listening to. After ordering their food they fell into a comfortable silence.
“What are you thinking about?’, Ryan took Savannah’s hand across the table.
“Just that this is the first time in three years that I have been on a date,” she smiled shyly.
“You were just waiting for the right guy”, he gave another crooked smile.
“And it had to be in Ireland right?”
“Indeed”, he said giving her hand a squeeze.
They separated as the waiter came to deliver their dinners. They enjoyed a quiet meal with intermitten conversation. Savannah found herself at ease with Ryan. He laughed at her stories about her and Taylor. How they had snuck out and how Taylor had ruined it by breaking his leg. Ryan seemed to be genuinely be listening to her every word.
“Would you like to have dessert and maybe a nice Irish coffee?”, Ryan asked.
“I don’t think I could eat another bite”, she laughed putting a hand over her stomach,” The food was wonderful.”
“I’ll take care of this”, he said picking up the bill,” then we can head to our next destination.”
“Where is that? Or are you going to make me wait?”
“I think I might make you wait”, he grinned.
“Torture,” she sighed playfully.
Ryan laughed and placed money inside the bill envelope and stood up,” Shall we?”, he offered his arm.
“Why yes we shall”, Savannah slipped her arm into his. His body was warm next to hers as they went to the truck.
“I meant to tell you how great you look tonight.”
“Thank you, and you look great as well”, she blushed.
“You blush easily Savannah Flanagan.”
Her name rolled off his lips in a way that made her speechless,” Guess you can thank my ancestors,” she tucked a loose piece of hair behind her ear.
“It’s very cute actually”, he opened the door for her.
She climbed in and took a moment to catch her breath. She had been lost in his words and his voice. She wanted to swim in the crystal blue eyes that held her in their gaze.
“We have some nice wine waiting for us at our next destination,” Ryan announced as he pulled the suv out of the parking lot.
“Trying to get me tipsy again?”, she raised her eyebrows.
“It was fun watching you last night,” he said with a laugh.
She shook her head and covered her eyes,” I felt horrible this morning.”
“Good Irish whiskey will do that to you”, he laughed,” Have to admit , I was surprised that a girl would be drinking straight whiskey.”
It was Savannah’s turn to laugh,” My father taught me about whiskey. He had one every night after work. Just one, and when he would tell me goodnight I could smell it. It was comforting in a way,” she smiled at her memory.
“When did you first try it for yourself?”
She pondered for a moment,” I guess when I was about eighteen. I was so sick and my father made me drink about a quarter of a cup. I coughed and sputtered, but it made me sleep. The next day my fever was gone and my cough was a lot better.”
“How old are you by the way?”
Savannah gave a mock gasp,” A gentleman never asks a lady that”
“If I’m interested in dating you, then I should know”, he countered with a smile.
“You first”, she looked at him.
“I’m just 30, thank you. Old, I know, but I’m pretty happy.”
“You are not old, shut up”, she laughed.
“Fine, now you’re turn.”
“I’m 27.”
He let out a deep laugh,” Yes! A younger woman!”
“By three years,” she tossed back laughing.
“You are difficult to get information from,” he pulled into a parking spot at a marina.
“What ever”, she said letting herself out.
“So if I ask Taylor what will he say?’, Ryan said putting an arm around her waist.
Savannah was aware of the intimate gesture, but she enjoyed how it felt,” Don’t ask Taylor anything. He’s on a constant mission to embarrass me.”
“Then I get to see your cheeks all rosy”, he placed a gentle kiss against her cheek. He as they approached a boat anchored to the dock,” This is our boat.”
“Ryan, it’s beautiful,” Savannah gasped. The small sailboat was decked out with Christmas lights around the rails. Blankets were folded on the bench near the bow.
“Thought a night time cruise would be nice”, he stepped into the boat and held his hand out to her,” Come aboard and get comfy. Blankets are up front, it can get pretty chilly out here. I’ll go make us a drink.”
“Sounds good”, she made her way to the bench and sat down cross legged. She unfolded the blanket and laid it across her lap.” Who’s driving?” she asked as Ryan approached with a glass of white wine.
“I am, one glass of wine after a meal will not impair me”, he assured her.
“That’s fine,” she took a sip of wine,” Just wondering if I would have company on the bench.”
Ryan smiled down at her,” You will don’t worry,” he ran a finger over her cheek,” Let’s head out and then I’ll drop anchor a little off shore,” he went to the wheel after taking off the casting lines and starting the engine. They sailed in to the black water, the city lights dotted the shore line and a soft wind rolled across the water. Ryan drove them about three miles of shore before cutting the engine. He dropped anchor and went to join Savannah. He brought his glass of wine,” Was the ride okay?”
“Absolutely beautiful,” she smiled as he filled her glass,” Is the boat yours?”
“It is, one of my splurges when I got my job at the accounting firm.
“ I wish we had something like this back home. We have a river and it is beautiful, but nothing like this,” she took a swallow of wine.
“What is Tulsa like?”, he leaned his head against his hand propping his elbow against the rail.
“Very flat”, she smiled,” but beautiful. Outside the actual down town area is very rural and green. Behind Taylor’s house is the river. We used to go all the time when we were younger.”
“Sounds lovely,” he said watching her face.
“Where did you grow up?”
“Here in town, wasn’t quite as built up as it is now. We lived in a place right outside of town. Woods and all to run and play in, we would get so scratched up with bumps, and bruises. We loved it.”
“I miss being a kid sometimes”, she said as a brisk breeze blew across the water causing her to shiver.
“Here”, Ryan said slowly pulling her into his arms and spreading another blanket over them,” Warmer?”
“Much”, she said softly gazing into his eyes.
“You look beautiful”, Ryan said cupping her face in his hand and stroking her cheek with his thumb.
“Probably the wine”, she joked bringing her hand against his.
"I can assure you it's not", Ryan smiled.
Savannah slightly pulled herself out of his arms, she was getting closer to him and while she was enjoying it, she was scared as well. Scared of a past that she didn't want to remember," Have you always enjoyed sailing?", she asked breaking the silence.
Ryan looked at her confused and then decided not to say anything," For the most part, something about the water. The way it will rock the boat and well, the water just has it's own rhythm."
She nodded," I love swimming and just being out in nature in general."
"So I did well by bringing you out here?"
She gave a small smile," Yes you did," she freed herself completely and stood up.
"Where are you going?"
"No where", she took a deep breath," just thought I would stretch."
"You're a strange one Savannah."
She tried to shove the nervousness away," Because I wanted to stretch my legs?"
"No," he sighed, he wasn't sure where he had taken a wrong turn, but he knew he had to get back on the right path," I just thought we were enjoying ourselves that's all."
"I am", she nodded," We are", she tried to correct herself.
Ryan watched her fidget and then turn her back. She was watching the black horizon and gazing at the diamond like stars. The girl he had been with earlier had some how gone away," If you're uncomfortable we can head back," he said gently taking her hand.
Savannah nodded," I'm not uncomfortable Ryan, I just...... sometimes.........this is just confusing."
"How long are you here for?"
"Three weeks," she answered.
"We'll make the best of it then."
"Or we can head back and pretend that none of this ever happened."
Ryan felt as if he had been hit, he quickly composed himself," Don't say that Savannah. We have been on one date and not even a full date at that. We're still on it."
"It's complicated."
"If you make it that way."
She turned to him," Can we get some where warm?"
Ryan sighed," Promise we'll talk once we get back."
"We'll talk, but no promises," she agreed. She watched as he turned to pull up the anchor and start the engine. She mentally kicked herself for saying those things to him. He had done nothing but be amazing all night, but in truth that is what scared her the most. The way he looked at her and watched her, the fact that he asked questions and she knew more questions would follow if they continued to date. She knew she was making a mountain out of a mole hill as they pulled into the marina. Ryan helped her out of the boat and then tied the lines.
"I'll turn on the heat in the car", he said as she rubbed her hands together. He didn't reach for her hand this time. He was utterly confused as they walked in silence and drove in silence.
Savannah sat staring out the window. The moon was hidden by deep clouds, the stars no longer twinkled, there was only black road ahead. She could feel Ryan's presence next to her, but he wasn't speaking. The ease and warmth that had flowed between them was now a cold blank space. She kept her hands inside of her jacket and could feel her palms begin to sweat. She knew that if he were to touch her again that it would be more than she could take.
Ryan broke the quiet as he pulled in the bed and breakfast," What happened back there?", he asked quietly.
Savannah stared at the floor and shook her head," This has been an amazing night Ryan, but I just don't think it should lead to any more."
"Why not?", he demanded softly.
"Because it will end just like everything else does", she said opening her door.
Ryan followed suit," Savannah, you are being unreasonable. We had one date! One date and suddenly you want nothing to do with me?"
"You don't get it", she said as angry tears built in her eyes.
"What don't I get?", he grabbed her arm and made her look at him.
She swallowed the lump in her throat," That this won't work. You live here", she gestured with her arms," I live thousands of miles away. Last night at the pub was great and tonight was great, but it has to end before it gets too far."
Ryan looked at her with stern eyes," How can it end when it has barely begun? I'm not asking for more than simply spending time with you. Getting to know you. If things go in a different direction and we never see each other again, then that's what happens."
Savannah could feel her wall crumble slightly under his words, the constriction around her heart was making her nearly breathless. She wanted it to be simple, she wanted to get to know him and trust that they had time to do it. Three weeks would simply become a threshold to nothing or the rest of her life and the gaping gorge in the middle that she had to leap over petrified her.
"All I'm asking for is time with you over the next few weeks."
She watched his eyes as they searched hers for an answer, she ran a hand through her hair and finally nodded," Okay......okay."
Ryan sighed and smiled his crooked smile," Can I walk you to your door?"
"Better make sure I get home safe", she laughed.
Savannah unlocked her door and turned to Ryan," I really did have a great time tonight."
"Me too", he smiled," Can I see you tomorrow?"
She felt the color creep back in her cheeks," Possibly...."
"Lunch maybe? I could come pick you up, take you on an actual day on the beach."
"That sounds nice."
"Great", he grinned," I'll be here say noon time tomorrow?"
Savannah nodded," Noon tomorrow."
"Goodnight Savannah Flanagan," he lifted her hand and kissed the back of hit softly.
She felt her breath catch in her throat," Good night Ryan," she slowly with drew her hand from his and closed the door as he waved. Her heart was beating so loud she was sure he would have heard it. She sat on the edge of the bed and removed her shoes," What is wrong with you Flanagan?", she scolded herself quietly. Her mind was still racing with every reason why going out with him was a bad idea, but her heart was telling her to try.
"I thought I heard mumbling in here", Taylor said walking out of the bathroom in boxers and a t-shirt," How was it?"
Savannah sighed," Perfect until I nearly screwed it up."
He sighed," What happened Savy?"
She threw her hands up in frustration," My logical side kicking in, the hurt re surfacing, me being scared to let someone in."
"All of this came out of one date?"
She nodded," Taylor, I have to be honest, my attraction to him scares me. I met him last night and I want to be near him, I want to see him. That cannot be healthy."
Taylor put his arm around his best friend and pulled her to his side," Savannah, you have been through so much. You have been hurt and here is someone that has no pretenses about you. Some one who sees you, it's not unhealthy to feel an attraction."
"He wants to have lunch tomorrow."
"Are you going?"
"I said yes and I want too. I don't want you to think I am bailing on you."
He laughed," You aren't bailing on me, you had a chance meeting with someone and now who knows. I'm a big boy and I am perfectly capable of entertaining myself."
Savannah lay her head on his shoulder," I just wish I could get my brain to just stop for a while."
"You have a great brain Sav", he laughed," Just listen to that little thing in your chest called a heart."
"Even if it can lead to nothing but heart ache?"
"Doesn't matter if it leads you to a road of disaster, as long as you enjoy it while it lasts."
"Thank You Taylor", she hugged him.
"Now get some sleep, you have a make up date tomorrow."
"Will do," she smiled. She waited until he was out of the room and then put on her pajamas. She sat in the middle of the bed and ran through what had happened during the evening. She decided to take a walk around the inn, pulling on a heavy green sweater she took her key and walked out the door. The night air greeted her briskly. It was nearly icy as the wind blew. She pulled the sweater tighter around her and walked down the pathway to the gazebo. It was a small white gazebo with wooden benches inside. She sat down and pulled her knees to her chest. She closed her eyes and let the wind flow over her. It cooled the warm tears that trickled down her cheeks.
Savannah cried tears of confusion and tears she knew would come later. Her head told her that continuing with Ryan would be nothing but a heartache that she didn't know she would be able to survive. She pulled back the sleeve of her sweater to see the visible markings of the last time she had trusted someone. She shuddered at the thoughts as the wind grew stronger and angry lightning flashed outside of the small gazebo. She gathered herself and her thoughts, she pushed the sleeves of her sweater down thus pushing away the memories threatening to crash around her like the gathering storm. She walked quickly back to her room, her mind made up.
Ryan packed a small basket with items for a day on the beach. He knew it would be chilly as Ireland tended to be in September, he made sure to bring a thermos of hot tea and extra blankets. He had been up late trying to make sure that he had planned the perfect day. He didn't want Savannah to slip away like she had the night before. He knew there was an underlying current to her behavior and he wanted to know what that current was. He made sure to put his guitar in its soft case and put it in the car. Kindling for a fire was the last item placed in the basket, packed carefully in a bag. He dressed casually in jeans, a t-shirt, and a sweater over it. After working gel into his hair he drove quickly to the inn, he arrived right at noon," To punctual?", he questioned himself," What does it matter, you are driving yourself nuts Kelly", he climbed out of the truck and made his way to Savannah's room. He knocked softly and waited.
Savannah heard the knock and felt her stomach twist with excitement, just the thought of the face on the other side of the door made her pulse begin to race," Afternoon", she smiled opening the door for him.
"Good afternoon", he gave s light bow", How are you today?"
"I am wonderful, I am pretty much ready to go," she flitted about the room picking up a few things.
Ryan laughed as she ran to get her jacket, she was dressed in jeans as well with a black sweater and her hair braided neatly. He couldn't help but notice the scent of perfume she wore, it reminded him of a fresh spring day when the flowers were just beginning to bloom.
"All set?", she asked cutting into his thought.
"If you are my dear", he said offering his arm.
"So the beach, In Ireland, and September?" she questioned.
He laughed deeply," Brilliant idea right?"
"For you maybe, for a poor little yank like me, I'll freeze."
"That is why I have brought provisions," he grinned," fear not my lady, you won't freeze."
Savannah laughed at his old world canter," Guess I'm just going to have to believe you huh?"
"Do you have a choice?"
She shrugged," I could stay cuddled up in my nice big warm bed!"
"Now what's the fun in that?", he said raising an eye brow.
Savannah laughed and felt her face burn.
The sky was a steely gray and the waves crashed relentlessly against the rocks that jutted out below the cliffs. The shore was strewn with rocks smoothed over by the ever flowing water. The wind whipped noisily throughout the shore and a fine mist hung in the air.
"Now I know I am nuts", Savannah said as she and Ryan walked down the beach.
Ryan laughed," Just a little further, there is an alcove, kind of hides you from everything."
She followed him holding her jacket tighter around her, soon though she saw the alcove. It was nestled between the cliffs. As the made their way over the wind slowed down and she could actually hear herself talk. She waited as Ryan removed the blankets from a basket," Can I help?", she asked as he spread them out on the ground.
"By sitting down and relaxing", he smiled up at her.
"I think I will", she said sitting down on one side of the blanket, she watched as Ryan sat next to her.
"Feeling better today?", he said resting his elbows on his knees.
Savannah swallowed hard and nodded," There are just things about me and things that I have to work through."
"Things you may tell me?"
She laughed lightly," Ryan I have every reason to run from you right now, but I don't want too."
He smiled warmly," I'm glad you're not inclined too because well, I'm not in the mood to go running down a cold beach after you", he reached over and took her hand.
This cause Savannah to laugh as she moved closer to him," What did you bring to eat, because I am starving!"
"A few tastey items," he said pulling items out of the basket. They had fresh fruit, muffins, and bagels. He pulled out styrefoam cups and poured them each a cup of hot tea," MY special blend of tea."
"So it's spiked?!", she giggled.
"No, I promise. I just make it differently," he held a cup out to her.
Savannah held the cup up for a toast," To new beginnings?"
Ryan tried to hide the surprise on his face," Beginnings?"
She took a deep breath," I can't you out of my head Ryan Kelly, for the last 48 hours all I have done is think about every reason why this shouldn't happen, but then more reasons why it should."
He felt the smile spread across his face," To new beginnings and to the future what ever that may hold."
They toasted their cups and drank the warm liquid," This is delicious!", she said.
"Old family recipe."
"Well you did a great job."
"What can I say? I'm just naturally talented."
Savannah laughed," Not full of yourself at all there huh?"
"Nope, I just like making you laugh."
She blushed, but quickly recovered," So, I'm just a joke then?", she teased.
"You know that's not what I mean", he said putting an arm around her shoulders.
"I know, I know", she smiled. She hesitated briefly and the lay her head on his shoulder. She felt his cheek cool against her hair. Their hands were intertwined and the quiet was comfortable," I see you brought your guitar."
"Yeah, thought I could build a fire and maybe play a little."
"I would like that", she replied.
"How about a walk first?"
"Out there?", she pointed to the crashing waves and wailing gulls.
He chuckled and pulled her to her feet," Don't worry, I won't let the birds eat you." They started out down the beach talking about their families and making jokes. Ryan was beyond happy that Savannah was not becoming distant as she had the night before, she seemed more comfortable and resigned to simply let things go where they would between them. He could not deny that the thought of her leaving was beginning to create a void in his heart. He took the time to study her as she talked. The way she nervously tucked her hair behind her ear, when she got excited her tone sped up and got louder. When something was truly funny she would slightly snort when she laughed and this would spur laughter from the both of them.
They made their way back to the alcove to start the fire and warm up from their walk. Savannah settled on the blanket while Ryan took out the bag of kindling. Savannah sipped on another cup of tea as she sat and watched him begin to build the fire. His black hair now lay slightly flat after the being out in the mist for most of the day, his brow was furrowed in frustration as he tried to get the kindling lit. She memorized his jaw line and how his lips were pursed in concentration. Since they had started their day together her heart had been doing a steady gallop and she knew her cheeks had been more flushed than she let on, she blamed most of it on the whipping wind.
"There we go", Ryan said as the flames began licking the air and finally catching.
"Took long enough", she teased.
"Didn't see you helping", he bantered as he sat down.
"I see how it is", she started to move away from him.
"Oh no you don't"he said playfully grabbing her around the waist.
She giggled pushing at his hands playfully," You said I didn't help, so you don't need my company."
"You are just pushing further to ask Taylor questions", he said teasingly.
"Ugh", she groaned," I already told you that questions to Taylor are off limits."
"Well then, stay here and no questions. Deal?"
She stared at him,"You are unbelieveable!"
"Really? You think so?", he grinned.
She pushed his shoulder lightly," Doesn't matter what I say does it?"
He shook his head and smiled," I like you Savannah, and you're going to have to deal with it."
The color rose yet again for the millionth time that day, heart sprinted rather than the steady gallop.
"And she is speechless! I win," he cheered.
Savannah broke into a fit of laughter," You don't win, I just couldn't think of a come back at the moment."
"And now?"
She shrugged her shoulders," Change of subject, are you actually going to play the guitar?"
"I thought about it", he said removing it from its case," special requests?"
"Hmmmm, I think you should choose," she said pulling a blanket around her.
"Okay", he said tuning the guitar and strumming," It's an old Irish song, just called an Irish Lullaby."
"Original", she laughed.
"Make you a deal", he began," kiss for a song," he tapped his finger against his cheek.
"Very smooth", she laughed," fine", she placed a soft kiss against his cool skin. She could swear that she felt the heat rise as she kissed his cheek," Happy?"
"For now", he grinned, he hummed to find his note and then began to sing,"Over in Killarney,
Many years ago,
Me Mither sang a song to me
In tones so sweet and low.
Just a simple little ditty,
In her good ould Irish way,
And l'd give the world if she could sing
That song to me this day."
Savannah closed her eyes and let herself drift to the sound of his voice and the crashing sea. His voice brought about the feel of tears, but she quickly pushed them down inside and let her mind simply focus on the moment. She was warm between the blanket and the fire. Ryan switched songs and she felt herself slip further under the spell of his voice.
"Hey sleepy head", Ryan whispered kissing Savannah's forehead.
"Hmmm," she muttered," Did I fall asleep?'
He laughed lightly", Just for a bit, I didn't want to wake you."
She let her eyes adjust, the light was beginning to fade and the temperature was dropping," It's late", she stretched.
"You hungry?", he asked.
"Yeah," she laughed as her stomach rumbled.
"Let's head back to town, have some dinner."
She nodded and yawned. They packed up their stuff and headed back to Ryan's suv. They held hands and walked close together, Savannah enjoyed the way Ryan walked by her side so that she wouldn't be near the water. They drove back into town and went to Nikki's Tavern for dinner.
Savannah felt her eyes growing heavy as they left Nikki's. They had enjoyed a quiet meal, the chaos around them seemed to melt away as they slipped into their own world together. Ryan making her laugh and smile despite the exhaustion she felt creeping over her.
"Think you can walk to your room?", Ryan asked as he pulled into the inn.
"Pretty sure", she yawned.
He opened her door for her and steadied her as they walked," Did you enjoy today?"
"Very much", she answered," didn't think I would be so tired."
"Being out in the elements will do that to you", he laughed as they got to her door.
"Would you like to come in for a few?"
"Um.... seems like you're pretty tired," he answered smoothing a hand down her hair.
"I think if I just get comfy then I should be fine."
He shrugged," If you would like me too then I will."
She smiled," Yes I would like for you to come in."
"Right then", he said following her inside," I can get a fire going if you want to change," he offered.
"That would be great", she said pulling some clothes out of a small closet and going to the bathroom. She wore flannel pants and a short sleeve t-shirt. She took her hair down and ran a brush through it. She felt slightly more awake after splashing cold water on her face. She re entered the room and a cheery fire was already crackling," Wow, much faster than this after noon."
Ryan laughed," Still harping on that huh?"
She grinned," You have to admit, it was funny."
"You weren't the one lighting it."
"True, true", she said sitting cross legged on the bed.
"So tomorrow is Sunday, any plans?," he sat next to her.
She shook her head," I have spent the last two days with you, so I really haven't had the chance to really plan much."
"Think Taylor would kill me if I stole you again?"
She shrugged," I don't know, I should probably hang out with him. Maybe tomorrow night?"
"That works, you can come to my place. I'll cook."
She smiled," SO you not only sing, but you cook as well?"
He laughed," All of that on top of being an accountant."
Savannah sputtered with laughter," sorry", she said catching her breath," Sorry, you just don't hear someone say singing and accounting in the same breath."
"Yeah well, I'm a little different," he ran a finger over scars on her right arm that extended from the outside of her upper arm down to the elbow and slightly further ," What are these from?"
Savannah stiffened pulling her arm away, why hadn't she thought about covering up the series of scars on her forearm. The scars were not large, but they were still noticeable. She could clearly see the memory surface," Years ago", she said staring at the blanket.
Ryan sighed," So you're not going to tell me about it are you?"
She shook her head," It was something that some one did to me a long time ago and forgive me if I don't want to drag things back out."
"Are they on both arms?"
She sighed," Are we playing twenty questions?", she glared at him.
Ryan nodded," I didn't mean to push you," he placed a finger under her chin bringing her eyes level with his," Just know that it won't make a difference."
She closed her eyes and nodded, she felt her breath catch as he kissed her forehead, followed by each of her cheeks, her nose and finally his lips were gently against hers.
Savannah felt her heart come undone under the gentleness of his kiss, it was the most perfect first kiss she had ever received. She opened her eyes as he pulled back from her. SHe knew her face must be a deep red from the heat that was emanating from it.
" I think you should get some rest", he said quietly.
She nodded in agreement," Thank you", she said hugging him.
"For which part exactly", he teased.
She smiled," For everything."
"You are welcome and I must say thank you as well. You are an amazing, mysterious woman Savannah and I can't wait to unlock the secrets behind everything."
She pulled her arms from him and stood up," Not everything", she mumbled to herself.
He stood up and walked to the door," Did I say something?'
"Ryan, just please understand. There are things, things about me that you don't know. Things I may not be able to tell you."
He nodded his head," They are your secrets and your burdens Savannah, just know that I only want to help you."
She fought with her emotions and the rush of words she wanted to say, but she quickly composed herself,"Dinner tomorrow night right?"
Ryan frowned at her quick change of subject," Yeah dinner tomorrow," he kissed her cheek and held his hand against the side of her face," Just think about what I said ok?"
"I will", she nodded," Good night."
"Good night", he said walking down the path way.
Savannah shoved away the thought to run after him and throw herself into his arms and tell him everything. She should be reveling in the feel of his kiss, not fearing the nightmares she knew would come. She locked the door and prepared for bed.
The car was going fast, too fast. The trees were rushing by, the sun light was slanting through the leaves and casting long golden fingers to reflect of the windshield.
"Please slow down," she begged.
"Not until you answer me", came the voice next to her.
"What do you want me to say", Savannah cried digging her finger nails into the palms of her hands," Brendan, please I am begging you."
"You said you don't love me, I want to know why!", he yelled above the roar of his engine.
She had started to cry," I don't know why, I just know that I love you, I'm just not in love with you. It's not working anymore."
He growled with anger," And that is supposed to be okay?"
"I am being honest, now please slow down!"
It was too late, the curve was too sharp and he was going to fast. Glass showered over her as she held her arms up to protect her face,"Help!!!!", she screamed.
"Savy", Taylor shook her," Savannah wake up."
"Brendan, no, too fast", she pushed against him.
"Honey wake up", he said soothingly.
Savannah woke up drenched in sweat and saw Taylor's worried eyes. She grabbed onto his shirt and buried her head against his chest," I saw
