The hotel lobby is teeming with Thunderheads, and the roar of sound is almost deafening. Paul and Keith are hanging out behind some potted plants, unseen by their fans, but watching. Old friends are greeting each other, and people are meeting one another for the first time in person. The front doors open and two people walk into the packed lobby, just out of the Thunderheads’ view.
They check in, and the taller figure in a plaid shirt and jeans pulls their bags along as they walk farther into the lobby. Wearing loose clothes, a backwards baseball cap, and sunglasses, nobody can tell just what gender the person is. The other person, a woman, is familiar to Paul. He recognizes her as a really big fan of his, Mindy, and apparently so do the other Thunderheads. They flock to her to say hello, and only then notice her tall, quiet companion.
Turning away from the crowd of people, the tall figure unbuttons their shirt to reveal a curvy toned figure in a dark tanktop. Now quite apparently female, the woman also removes her sunglasses and places them on top of one of their suitcases. She looks nervous, but steels herself and forces herself to smile. She then removes her hat, and turns to face the crowd of people as she takes her hair out of its’ tousled bun.
A loud shriek across the room catches everyone’s attention, and the entire group quiets down enough to hear the words shouted by the same excited girl just a moment later. “Captain! Mindy!” A bright blur weaves its’ way through the crowd, in the shape of a running girl of about 15 years of age. The tall woman in plaid, still holding her hat, stiffens perceptibly under the watchful gazes of the two men in the foliage.
The teenager runs full tilt into the woman, who catches her about the waist. Who then swings her into the air in a hug, dampening the force of the impact. Placing her on her feet, the tall woman smiles, and feels her ribs jokingly to make sure nothing got broken. The girl then pelts over to throw herself at Mindy, and hugs her tight.
The two men watch with interest as the newcomers are mobbed by about 20 people. They are even kind of shocked when the two women are held up for photo after photo. Keith shoots Paul a disbelieving look as a young girl asks the taller woman “Captain” if she can have a hug. “They’re like mini-celebrities! I know one of them, but who is that other lady? I’ve never seen her before!” Paul exclaims in awe.
Keith shrugs, and they turn their gazes back to the crowd. Just in time to see Mindy and Captain peel off and escape with their luggage toward the elevators. Shifting slightly to peer through the plants, they see Captain leave one bag outside the elevator doors as she loads the other one on. A slightly taller dark-haired man is holding the doors open politely so that she can get everything on safely. With both pieces of luggage aboard, the woman thanks the man, and winks at him just as the doors slide shut.
Turning around, the man goes to walk by, but Keith nabs his arm and pulls him through the bushes and into the little hiding area. “What the…” the man starts to exclaim, but is cut off by Paul, who places a hand over his mouth, and a finger on his own lips. “Ryan keep it down! We’re hiding!” Keith hisses.
Rolling his eyes, Ryan nods to assure them he will be quiet, and Paul releases him. “What the heck are you two DOING!?” he whispers harshly. They look at one another, then simultaneously point through the branches of a leafy tree, toward the Thunderheads in the lobby. Catching on, but still a bit confused, Ryan whispers “You’re hiding from fans?”
“No mate, we’re watching them in their natural habitat!” Paul says, his eyes creasing with suppressed laughter. Keith’s head bobs in gleeful agreement, and the two of them lean forward to peer between the branches. For lack of anything better to do with his time, and not a little curious, Ryan joins them.
Laughter, flashing cameras, and lots of happy faces fill the lobby. The crowd of people is milling about, greetings are being exchanged, and the air is filled with an almost holiday feeling. The elevator doors ding, and open to reveal the two women from before, but in clothes more suited to this southern climate.
Mindy has on comfortable pants and nice sneakers for walking. Captain is wearing a soft cotton t-shirt and cargo shorts, her shoes a pair of beat up old sneakers. They walk back over to the group of waiting Thunderheads, and everyone settles down a bit, sitting on every available surface.
One girl pulls out a bag of gummy worms, and Captain’s eyes go round, then she smiles. She makes a puppy-dog face at the girl holding the bag, but the girl shakes her head and is obviously not wanting to share. Without hesitating, Captain drops to her knees on the carpet and puts her tongue out, cocking her head to the side in a very puppy-like pose.
The crowd of people sitting around start jeering, urging the girl to share. Calls of “Look at that! You’re making The Captain beg!” and “Mutt is acting like a mutt!” echo around the lobby. Finally Mindy says simply, “Just give AM one of the gummy worms before she starts licking you!” and the girl makes a mock disgusted face, holding a worm out between two dainty fingers.
Carefully, Captain stretches out her neck, gracefully taking the gummy worm between her teeth, and then pulls it out of the girls fingers. The girl pulls her hand away, and everyone breaks into fits of laughter, obviously pleased with the outcome. Captain then stands and walks over to a free chair. Flopping into it, she stares off into space and chews on her prize, completely ignoring everyone as her ears burn red.
The three men hiding in the shrubbery are surprised by this scene, and aren’t sure what to think of it. Ryan looks bewildered, Paul has a half smile on his face, and Keith has one hand over his mouth, stifling his laughter. Paul just shakes his head, and whispers “That was interesting, but look at the rest of them. She hasn’t lost a speck of respect from any of them! It’s almost like they expect her to do something like that!”
Completely confused, the men settle in to watch the crowd of Thunderheads, anxious to see more of what their fans are like when they aren’t there. Before anything else really odd can happen, another girl walks in through the front doors. Late teen, maybe a young adult, and she’s carrying herself like a local.
She greets the Thunderheads, and they all get up to follow her outside. Apparently the girl is their local guide, a friend who’s eager to show off her hometown. On their way out the doors, she tells them that she thinks that Celtic Thunder might be staying at the hotel, so they should all keep an eye out for the guys. The three men shrink back, afraid of being spotted, but the people are too excited to notice them.
Captain exclaims loudly to all those gathered “You mean I might get to meet George finally?!” in an ecstatic tone, and all of the others smile and pat her on the back, obviously happy for her. “Oh! I almost forgot to tell you, now that everyone is here!” she says, stopping just before the doors. “Mindy’s court and my crew need to meet here after the show tonight. I have a surprise for everyone, and I think you’re all going to want to be there.”
Ignoring their excited looks and pleading questions, Captain and Mindy stroll through the doors, arm in arm. The three men hiding in the plants look at each other, the same question forming in each of their minds. Ryan is the first one to ask it. “Do we dare come back here after the show? Just to see what’s going to happen?” After a few moments of thought, they all nod agreement, and step out from behind the planters. A shout from behind them alerts them to the newly arrived George, with a sulky looking Damian in tow.
Excitedly, the others run over to tell them all about what they witnessed, and the five of them make a pact to meet back here in the evening. With their plans settled, they set off in search of something to eat. Lurking and watching people is hungry business after all.
