The tour bus rumbled to a stop outside the final venue and Colm released an audible sigh. It had been a long tour and he was looking forward to the vacation that he had planned after the final show. Just a few more hours and he would be in a hotel bed and finally free. He grabbed his laptop bag and few other things before joining his band mates inside the performing arts center.
They sat through a meeting with their manager and wardrobe people and finally were free for some down time before the sound check. He went to the dressing room and removed his contacts, opting for the glasses he preferred. He felt like for the last few weeks that he had been running on auto pilot and was constantly tired. He drank a cup a cup of tea, responded to a few emails and then stowed his bag in the green room. Standing up with a stretch, he contemplated the idea of a walk in the fresh air. Keeping his all access badge in his back pocket he opened the heavy backstage door. He threw a wave to a few of the drivers and began to walk away from the building.
His body felt lighter as he saw the building grow smaller with his distance from it. He dug his hands into his pockets against the brisk winter air. He looked up as lace like snow flakes began to fall quietly to the ground. A smile crossed his face as he walked, he loved snow. Even when it was wet and miserable, he still enjoyed it. He stopped as he heard soft cries coming from near a dumpster. He shook his head and started to walk again, but stopped as the cries became audible. His curiosity got the better of him as he went to investigate the sound. He was stunned as he saw a small, too skinny dog, not even a dog, it had to be a puppy; sitting among a torn duffle bag,"How did you get here?", he said looking at the animal. He looked around and saw no one, the street was empty and the puppy cried again. "Come on then", he removed the jacket he wore and wrapped it around the shivering animal. He carried it quickly back to the venue.
"What's that?", Emmet asked as Colm swept quickly through the door.
"I.....I found her," he said stroking the small bundle.
"Found who?"
"Someone threw away a puppy, she's not very old." he moved the coat to the side, showing the puppy to his band mate.
"She's got to be hungry", Emmet felt a pang of sympathy for the pathetic looking animal.
"We should call someone."
"Who? We're not from here", he shrugged.
"Get your phone", Colm instructed,"We can look up a place."
"okay", he agreed pulling his phone from his pocket. Together they looked up shelter information. Emmet called a few different ones until they found someone who was available to look at the dog.
"We still have time before soundcheck", Colm said looking at his watch.
"How are we getting to this place?", Emmet questioned.
"Cab"
"Sharon will kill us if we are late."
"We won't be" he said feeling the puppy move inside the jacket. The two called a cab and left without being seen.
"Leave it to you to find a dog", Emmet said as they climbed out of the cab and walked into the office of the shelter.
"She needed to be found", Colm replied looking at the now sleeping bundle of brown and white.
"Can I help you?", a young woman with bobbed, brunette hair asked.
"Yes, we called about finding a puppy", Colm said.
"So glad you could make it!", she ushered them back into a small room,"I'm doctor Conrad."
"Colm and he's Emmet", he placed his jacket on the small examination table.
"Poor baby", the doctor mumbled stroking the dog as she listened for a heartbeat and examined her body,"She's definitely malnourished, but aside from that she looks good. We have to run tests and call the police. Just for an official report. Where did you find her?"
"We actually have a show to do in about three or four hours. Is it possible to give you all the information?", Emmet asked.
"I have witness statement forms, but first I am going to give her to one of our techs. She needs food, water, and some rest."
"Can I say goodbye first?", Colm asked.
"Of course", she smiled as the young man leaned down so he was eye level with the puppy. She felt her throat catch as the dog's tail wagged slightly.
"You're in good hands now wee one"he kissed her on the head and stood up,"We'll wait in the lobby."
