“You did what?” Neil exclaimed, nearly spitting out his drink.
“I told her I loved her.”
Keith hadn’t planned on telling Andy how he felt. After dancing the night away at the bar the two had walked back to Keith’s place which was only a few blocks away. The balmy night air had helped clear their heads and also gave them more time together.
He had spread a blanket out on the deck of the ship where the two of them laid shoulder to shoulder, hands intertwined, for hours trying to find the stars amid the constant glare and smog that surrounded Los Angeles.
Scooting closer Andy let her head rest on Keith’s chest with her arm draped across his waist. She listened to the steady beat of the heart beneath her ear and against her will her eyes began to close.
Keith wrapped his arm around her and held her close as her breathing began to even out. The gentle movement of the boat, the stillness of the night, and the memories of the past few months blended together and caused a smile to tug at Keith’s lips.
“I love you.” The words were out of his mouth before he could stop them.
At first he thought Andy hadn’t heard him but after a long moment she raised herself up on one elbow and met his eyes. “What did you say?”
His face burning in embarrassment Keith tried to turn away. “I…I didn’t…I mean…”
Andy gently touched his cheek and forced him to meet her eyes. “Answer me. What did you say?”
Taking a ragged breath Keith repeated himself. “I love you.”
Leaning down Andy kissed him very gently. “I love you too.”
“Well…what did she say?” asked George, the Scot’s voice bringing him back to the present.
To the surprise of his band mates Keith actually blushed as he started into the depths of his pint glass. “She said she loved me too.”
His four companions started at him in shock. Keith ‘I-don’t-have-a-girlfriend-and-I-don’t-want-a-girlfriend’ Harkin was not only dating someone but he was in love with her.
“Wow,” replied Ryan before taking a drink of his beer. Usually he could always find something to say but for once the young man was at a loss for words.
“Well tell us about her,” said Emmet who finally managed to break the awkward silence. “You can’t just spring something like that on us without giving a few details.”
Slowly Keith began to describe the young woman who had started out as a thorn in his side and become the love of his life.

Keith checked his watch once more as he paced back and forth in the airport. By a stroke of luck or the right alignment of the planets or some miracle Andrea had agreed to fly out and see him while on tour. She was actually going to be working, there was a stack of contracts a mile high that she needed him to go over and sign, but the fact that he was actually going to see her for the first time in nearly three months was what was causing him to pace around the bustling space.
Finally he caught a glimpse of her through the crowd, standing on her toes in an attempt to see him. Keith waved and a smile broke out across her face once she spotted him. Dropping her bag Andy laughed when Keith scooped her off of the floor in a hug.
Before she could speak his lips were covering hers in a kiss that left her breathless. Holding her tightly Keith pressed a gentle kiss to her jaw. “I missed you.”
“I couldn’t tell.” Her answer caused the blonde to laugh and shake his head. She kissed him once more before grabbing her bag and heading towards baggage claim.
“You must be Andrea, it’s a pleasure to meet you.” Sharon held out her hand and shook Andy’s warmly.
“And you must be Sharon, I’ve heard a lot about you.”
“All good I hope.”
“Well…” replied Andy with a smile.
“Let’s introduce you to the other lads,” said Keith quickly while steering her down the hall and away from a laughing Sharon.
Everyone adored Andy, her quick wit and dry sense of humor made her easy to talk to. She seemed comfortable in almost any situation and it was nearly impossible to catch her off guard. Everyone was also impressed with the transformation that came over Keith when he was with her. He didn’t try to dominate the conversation or to be the center of attention, he seemed to be content to sit on the sidelines and listen. By the end of the night everyone had agreed that Andrea Connors was the best thing to happen to Keith in a long time.
---------------------------
The next morning Keith opened his eyes with a groan. He knew that Andy was awake because he could hear her typing and wondered how she could function so early in the morning. She had attended the show then hit the town with them afterwards. Luckily they had today off but at first glance she seemed like she wasn’t any worse for the wear.
“Good morning.” Andy came to sit next to him and Keith rolled over to face her.
He took her hand in his own and pressed a kiss to her knuckles. “I love you.”
Andy toyed with his already messy hair and smiled. “I love you too.” Closing her eyes she took a deep breath before she spoke again. “Keith, we need to talk.”
The surfer felt his stomach drop. “About what?”
“There’s another reason why I came out here. Don’t get me wrong, I wanted to see you but I could have just faxed those contracts over.”
Keith squeezed her fingers gently. “What is it?”
“Verve is assigning me to another client.”
It took a few minutes for her words to penetrate Keith’s foggy brain. “I don’t understand, you always have multiple clients. What’s the big deal?”
“They think you’re ready to do this on your own.” Seeing the look on Keith’s face broke Andy’s heart. “It’s nothing personal but I usually only have a client for three months, sometimes six at the most. I’ve been with you for nearly a year.”
“But…next year is when my album comes out. I wanted to do some gigs during the promos, then we have the shows in Atlantic City, we’re filming the new special, then the album will drop and the tour and…”
Andy placed her hand over Keith’s mouth. “Stop it. I know it’ll be a transition but everything will be fine.”
Keith shook his head and stroked her cheek gently. “I can’t do it without you.”
Swallowing past the lump in her throat Andy covered his hand with her own. “Yes you can.” He turned his head away and she sighed. “Keith please…don’t make this any harder than it already is.”
“I don’t understand. Did I do something wrong?”
“What do you mean?”
Raking a hand through his hair Keith sat back against the headboard. “I had to have done something wrong or they wouldn’t be taking you away from me.”
“You’re not being punished, Keith, it’s a privilege. This means they believe that you can go at it on your own.” The singer didn’t reply, he sat picking at the blanket as he processed this new information.
Watching Keith brood brought a frown to Andy’s face. He shouldn’t be this upset. Yes it was jarring but it wasn’t like they were breaking up. Another thought hit her and made her sick to her stomach. What if there was another reason behind his outburst? What if he only cared about her because she was always at his beck and call? What was going to happen to them now?
Lost her in own thoughts she jumped when Keith spoke again. “What if I hired you?”
“What?” Andy was starting to think that Keith was losing it.
“My life is going to be chaos next year and I can’t do this alone. What if you were my personal assistant?”
The dark eyes widened beneath her glasses. “Keith I…I don’t know. I’d have to break my contract with Verve and there would be a conflict of interest now that we’re together and we’d be touring and I don’t know what I’d do about my apartment and…”
It was Keith’s turn to stop Andy’s rambling but instead of his hand he used his lips. “Just consider it. Technically you would still be working for Verve seeing as I’m one of their artists and they knew that we were dating before all of this so there wouldn’t be any conflict of interest. You could tour with us or you could still stay in L.A., the choice is up to you. And you could keep your apartment too even if you did tour with us…it’s important to have someplace to go home to. Andy, it could work…that is if you want it to.”
Andy smoothed her hair back from her face. Keith’s last words struck a chord deep inside but she fought to keep her reaction neutral. “This is a lot to take in at once.” She pulled off her glasses and pinched the bridge of her nose. “Let me think about it, okay?”
Keith placed her glasses on the side table and kissed her again. “Of course.” He took her face in his hands and smiled. “I love you. Now come on we only have one day together and let’s not waste it.”

“Andy! Are you ready? We’re going to be late.”
“Hold your horses, Harkin. We have plenty of time.” Keith buttoned his jacket and glanced over where Andy was trying to force a stack of paperwork into her bag. “What was taking you so long?”
“I was finishing an e-mail to Sharon.”
Andy hadn’t felt comfortable taking Keith’s offer to be his personal assistant but Sharon had stepped in with a counteroffer. Sharon’s personal assistant had recently turned in her resignation and with such a busy year she was scrambling to find a suitable replacement. After some cajoling Andy had reluctantly agreed to be both Sharon and Keith’s assistant.
“Couldn’t it have waited?” Keith snapped. After seeing the shocked look on Andy’s face his expression softened. “I’m sorry. It’s just…tonight’s very important.” Tonight was the last meeting of the executives at Verve before Keith’s album went into final production. He was going to perform a few numbers with the band as well so the execs could hear how the music would sound live on tour.
“I know and you have every right to be nervous. I’m sorry to have kept you waiting.” Andy squeezed his shoulder and flashed him a tight smile in the mirror. “Ready?”
-----------------------------
Andy stood at the back of the concert hall and smiled when she heard the praise that flowed over Keith. The new material was brilliant and everyone at Verve was absolutely thrilled with the album. There were still a few final touches to be added and the photo shoot for the cover was next week but overall it was finished.
Checking her watch Andy sighed and headed out towards the parking lot. She had planned on making Keith a celebratory dinner that night but it seemed like he was headed out on the town. It looked like she would be eating alone…again.
In a way it was beneficial, she had a ton of work to get done for Sharon and this would give her an extra few hours to get caught up. If she needed something from Keith she could just ask, if she needed something from Sharon she had to deal with an entire ocean and several time zones.
Locking her front door Andy tried to keep herself from glancing at the table set for two and failed. Steeling herself she kicked off her heels and sat down at her desk but no matter how hard she tried she couldn’t concentrate on the screen in front of her.
For the first time she allowed her thoughts to wander towards the topic she had been avoiding for months: Was taking Keith up on his offer a mistake?
At first things had been great. Verve didn’t really mind at all, Celtic Thunder had recently been signed over to them so she was still working for two of their clients. She could spend more time with Keith but she was also pushed to her limits by Sharon, something that she absolutely loved.
The tour in Australia was bliss. Yes, the guys were busy and she barely had a moment to breathe but she wouldn’t have changed anything for the world. The time spent walking on the beach with Keith, watching him surf crystal clear waves, nights on the bus where they crammed into a tiny bunk just so they could hold each other. It was an experience that she’d never forget.
But lately things had started to change. Besides helping Sharon with the promo tour she had been responsible for setting up all of Keith’s solo gigs as well. Normally that wouldn’t have been a problem except Keith only gave her a month to set up the entire thing.
Andy had performed miracles in order to make things work but she had hit a snag with the gig in Kansas City. She had begged and pleaded but the venue that Keith wanted refused to stay open so late.
When she told Keith they had their first real fight.
“Keith?”
“What is it, love?”
“I’ve hit a snag with the Kansas City gig.”
He sat up from his sprawled position on the couch and frowned. “What kind of snag?”
“They won’t stay open late enough for your gig.”
“What?”
Andy perched on the back of the couch and tried to explain. “You and Emmet won’t finish at PBS until eight at the very earliest. By the time you change and make your way to the venue, run a sound check, and get the fans in it’ll be nine or later. They will only stay open until eleven, not a minute later.”
“That’s ridiculous!” His outburst made Andy jump. “Aren’t you even trying?”
“Of course I’m trying. I’ve talked to everyone under the sun but…”
“You do know I only have enough time to do a dozen or so of these gigs, right? I have to make every single one count.”
Trying to keep her cool Andy counted to ten before answering. “I understand that. I’ve found another venue. It’s not quite as large but…”
“No.”
Andy was hurt and angry. She had run herself ragged trying to put this tour together and he was acting like she was just sitting around doing nothing.
“Where is this coming from? I’ve practically killed myself to get this stupid tour together and this is how you’re thanking me?”
“Forget it.” He grabbed his coat and headed for the door. “I’ll ask Sharon to do it. At least she knows what she’s doing.”
Andy hadn’t spoken to Keith for five days after that.
The following morning a massive bouquet of flowers had appeared at her door but she threw them away. She did the same with the other four bouquets that he sent. Finally on the sixth day Keith had shown up with holding a single rose. She had been reluctant to let him in but eventually she had relented.
Keith had apologized at length for what felt like hours. He said he didn’t know what had come over him, that the stress had just been building up and he had let it out on her. He told her how much he appreciated her hard work and that none of this would have been possible without her.
Andy had been skeptical, she had never seen this side of Keith and to be honest it frightened her. Eventually she had forgiven him but she was still wary. Part of her wanted to just forget it ever happened but she still couldn’t stop thinking about the look on his face when he had stormed out of her apartment.
Rubbing her eyes she wiped away the tears that she told herself were caused from staring at the computer screen. Pulling up her e-mail account a sudden thought hit her. Keith hadn’t given her a flower after the show. She knew it was something simple and petty but it meant a lot to her. After every single show, whether it was at an arena or in a dingy bar, he always appeared with a flower and a smile to thank her for her support.
“He’s just busy,” she whispered to herself hoping that if she said it often enough she would believe it.
