"Where were you tonight anyway", he removed his helmet tucking it under his arm.
"Don't do that", she said unlocking the car,"You lost the right to know anything when you signed the divorce papers."
"The divorce that you wanted, not me," he countered.
"The divorce I wanted because you cheated!", she stopped as she noticed some of the crew watching them,"I am going to a hotel, have the fire marshall call me when I can come back and get some of my things."
"Look, why don't you just tell me what hotel and I can bring your things there."
"No, I don't want you in my house going through my things. That's what divorces are for. Tell the fire marshall to call me when I can come back", she slammed the door and gunned the engine. She drove back to the hotel, in a blur of tears and confusion. How had her house caught on fire? Why would Kelly offer for her to stay with him? She swiped the tears as she came to a red light. She pulled out her phone and messaged Colm,"Emergency, can I stay with you?"
"Of course, I'll wait in the lobby"
She placed the phone back in the console as she drove. Pulling up in front of the hotel, she pulled her purse and phone from the car and handed the keys to the valet.
"What happened?", Colm said jogging towards her.
"There was a fire", she said as he wrapped his arms around her.
"At your house?", he kept an arm protectively around her as they walked to the elevator.
"Yes, it apparently started in the garage and went into the kitchen before they got it under control."
"Did they say what started it?"
"Frayed wiring," she shrugged as she rubbed her tired eyes,"Sorry to come back like this."
"Don't be", he said pressing a kiss against her hair,"I'm glad I could be here," he slid the key into the door,"It's not a suite, but it works."
"It's not on fire, so I'm happy", she laughed taking off her heels.
"They'll be big, but I have some sweats you can put on and a shirt", he pulled a few things from his suit case,"They're clean, I promise."
"Thanks", she said taking them and going into the bathroom. She changed quickly and ran a brush through her hair. Her body was exhausted, it was getting close to two in the morning and she had been awake since about six the previous morning.
"I think you may look better in my sweats than in that dress", he teased as she turned the bathroom light off.
"Charming, really", she laughed.
"Before you say anything", he said noticing her eyeing the one king size bed in the room,"I'll happily sleep on the floor, or maybe this chair, it seems comfy", he slouched down and propped his feet on the small table.
"Look, the bed is big enough for two people. No reason for you to sleep on the floor or a chair for that matter. We're adults right? I think we can handle sleeping in the same bed", she pulled back the blanket and arranged the pillow.
"Hope you're not a kicker", he said doing the same on the opposite side.
"Should ask you the same thing", she said clicking off the bed side lamp.
"Suppose we'll see who has bruises when we wake up", he followed suit and turned off the other light.
"Go to sleep", she said with a laugh.
"Fine, fine", he said as the dark room fell into silence. He lay awake listening to her breathing, turning on his side, he noticed that she was still awake,"The staring thing is creepy."
"I wasn't staring", she replied,"I'm just tired and apparently my mind won't shut down."
He moved closer to her,"Well your house was on fire and it's been a long night."
"Kelly was there", she said as his arm came around her.
"Why was he there?"
"He's part of the rescue squad, they get called out with the truck to most fires."
Colm thought for a second as her head lay against his shoulder,"Do you think he would have started it?"
"What?", she raised her head,"Kelly setting a fire? It doesn't make sense."
He nodded,"Sorry, I know, he's part of a fire unit. I shouldn't have said that."
"It's okay", she lay back down, but the truth was she had already had the thought herself. It just didn't make any sense to her as to why he would have done it. She had learned though, Kelly Severide was capable of a lot.
"Don't do that", she said unlocking the car,"You lost the right to know anything when you signed the divorce papers."
