“Rebecca, you have to listen to reason!”
“Phoebe!” Rebecca Harkin’s face was bright red. “I don’t even know why we’re friends! How can you betray me like that?”
Phoebe threw her hands in the air in exasperation. “I don’t know why we’re friends, either! I just told my brother that who you liked. What’s the issue with that?”
“How can you ask?” Rebecca demanded. “I know you and your brother are close, but lord! Of course he would go and tell David!”
Her best friend blew up. “Well, finally! It was time that you stopped crushing on him and actually told him how you felt! You’re just being immature. Seriously, he likes you, too, so what is the problem with that?” Phoebe gave a huge sigh. “Becca…”
Rebecca frowned and turned on her heel. “See you later,” she shot over her shoulder, but it sounded more like a threat than a promise.
Phoebe stood there, frowning to herself. “How could Alan be so stupid?” she yelled at the sky after a while. “How could he?” she whispered. “Idiot.”
Keith jumped when Rebecca stormed into his room. “Um, hello, Becca. What’s up?”
“Men are idiots,” she snapped. “And best friends are never a good idea.”
Keith turned to Emmet. “You hear that? Leave, now.”
“This is serious!” Rebecca said.
“What did Phoebe do? This is Phoebe, your best friend for right now, right?” Keith smirked. “You switch best friends so fast, I never know.”
“Yes, Phoebe! And she is not my best friend anymore.” Rebecca glared at Keith. “I’m not talking to you now. You never take me seriously.” She turned to Emmet. “Will you listen to me complain?”
“Sure,” he said warily. He knew Rebecca’s moods well enough to be slightly scared of her.
“So, you know… no, you don’t. There’s a guy at university who, well…” she blushed slightly. “You can guess. Anyway.”
“I can’t,” Keith butted in. “What about this guy?”
“Oh,” she said angrily. “I think he’s rather cute. And nice. Anyway. Emmet.” Rebecca turned her back on Keith. “I told Phoebe that I thought he was rather cute and nice, and she told her brother. She and her brother are really close. And then her brother goes and tells David!” She threw her hands up in the air. “I mean, what am I supposed to do? Now he knows how I feel and I see him all the time!”
Emmet sucked in a deep breath. “And so you’re mad at Phoebe?”
“That is not the point.” Rebecca said it slowly, calculating. “The point is, I don’t know what to do.”
“Just act naturally,” Emmet said. “That always seems to work. And if he casually seems to ask you out, then you’ll know that he likes you, too.”
“I never said that I like hi—”
“And if he doesn’t, then you’ll know that he wasn’t the lad for you.” Emmet smiled. “It’ll work out. And maybe you should apologize to Phoebe. How rude were you to her?”
“Not at all!” Rebecca said, indignant.
Keith snorted.
“Okay, maybe a little. But she deserved it, spilling my secrets to her brother like that!”
“You should apologize,” Emmet said. “I’m sure she warned her brother that it was in confidence. But he is human. And so is she.”
“Why are you so… so… right?!” Rebecca asked, upset. “I can’t ever say anything without you being right about what to do.”
“I’m a natural,” Emmet said smoothly.
Keith snorted again. “Think again, lad. I think you’re just used to having women troubles.”
“What does that mean?” Emmet asked.
“Nothing.” Keith nonchalantly checked his phone and Emmet just rolled his eyes.
“Do I really have to apologize?” Rebecca asked dubiously.
“Yes,” Keith said. “You need to prove that you’re still her mate.”
“Alright,” Rebecca sighed. “Will you come with me?”
“Me?” Keith demanded. “No! I’m busy! You can work out your own problems! I have to go wax my surfboards.”
Rebecca appealed to Emmet instantly and he sighed. “Fine, I’ll come with you. But it’ll turn into a shopping expedition, I know it. You will make up and I’ll be dragged along to shop and do silly girl stuff.”
“Aw, you love that silly girl stuff, mate,” Keith said. “And better you than me.”
Rebecca smiled at Emmet. “Thank you for being so nice. Unlike my brother. Why have you remained best friends for so long? I’m never best friends with someone that long.” She laughed and walked out, having cooled down just as quickly as she had flared up. Emmet rolled his eyes and followed her out.
Keith just shook his head and laughed to himself. “Wax my surfboards, yeah, right. They didn’t think that through. It’s December!”
