The Healing has begun! Now Emmet just needs to get the rest of the Lads to understand what has been going on with Shane. Because Shane needs the other Lads to help her Totally Heal!

I'm grinning like an idiot and my brothers are noticing. BUT I don't care! That was wonderful!...thank goodness Emmet stuck by her. Amazing update. Meg, I know how you feel.

Two weeks passed and each day Shane was improving. She still had bad days, days where she couldn’t get out of bed and couldn’t stop crying. On those days Emmet stayed with her and held her when she’d let him or keep his distance when she asked. Shane tried not to push him away but instead was learning how to ask for her own space.
Even though she had her bad days she also had her good days. There were times when she sat on the couch and listened to Emmet’s stories from the past tour, laughing until tears spilled down her face.
She seemed to have an endless supply of jokes, some of which made Emmet’s ears turn very red, and would randomly work them into their conversations. But her favorite thing was to listen to Emmet play his piano. She would curl up on the floor on a stack of pillows with her notebook and draw as he played. They spent many, many days like that and more or less ignored the outside world.
Unfortunately reality eventually hit and before they knew it Emmet was due for rehearsals for the new tour.
“Here’s the address for the rehearsal hall. If you need anything, just call and I’ll be here as fast as I can, okay?”
Shane nodded and played with the scrap of paper he handed her. “Do you think I could go?”
“What?”
“I wanted to talk to everyone. Do you think that would be alright?”
“I don’t see why not.”
“Do you think they’ll even listen to me? They hate me.”
Emmet sat down on the coffee table in front of Shane. “Listen to me, no one hates you. I know that they’ll listen to you.” He tipped her chin up and met her eyes. “Are you sure you’re up to this?” Shane had been up most of the night with horrific nightmares and looked absolutely exhausted.
“Yes, I want to do this. I need to do this.”
“Okay, let’s go.”

Emmet was the last one to arrive at rehearsals and received several raised eyebrows. The others knew that Shane was in town but they didn’t know that she was staying with him nor did they know anything about her recent breakdown. The tenor had been scarce ever since the taping of the special and everyone was wondering what was going on.
“He lives!” exclaimed Keith.
“We thought you fell off the face of the Earth, lad,” said George. “Where have you been?”
“I’ll get to that. But before we start we actually have a visitor.” He stepped to the side and a buzz went through the room when Shane walked through the door.
“That’s my cue,” said Brooklyn.
“Wait, Brooke, you can stay. This actually applies to you.” She took a shaky breath and glanced at Emmet who gave her a nod. “I um…I just wanted to say that I was sorry. Now I know those words mean nothing, less than nothing to you but there’s nothing more I can say.”
“I was selfish, I hurt you, I caused you all pain and I’m sorry. I can’t take it back and if I could I would. There’s no excuse for the way I acted but if you can bear to listen to me for another minute then maybe I can try to explain things.”
No one said a word and Shane shoved her hands in her pockets. “I don’t need to explain my past, you’ve all heard the sob stories, and please don’t think I’m using my past as a crutch. It’s a part of me and it made me who I am.”
“Anyway…I have never been surrounded by a group of people who cared so much. At first I thought you were all just being friendly, making the new girl feel at ease but then I realized that you actually cared and that scared me. Whenever I let someone get close to me they always end up getting tired of my drama and leave me. It hurts so much that I couldn’t go through it again so I tried to push you all away. And it worked…”
She glanced up and noticed that no one would meet her eyes. “I um…I even tried to take it even further. I had myself convinced that you all hated me so I…I…” she stopped and Emmet reached over to squeeze her hand tightly. “I tried to kill myself.”
“You did what?” exclaimed Ryan.
“Why? When?” asked Sharon.
“I tried the night that you asked me to come back for the taping. After I got out of the hospital in April I started to have panic and anxiety attacks so my doctor wrote me a prescription for these pills. At first they helped but soon I had to take more and more just to fight off the attacks. When you asked me back I had the worst attack yet. I took pill after pill but they weren’t working and before I knew it half the bottle was gone. I was so drugged I couldn’t move, I couldn’t breathe and I thought I was dying. I was actually happy about it because I knew I would be free, that you would be free and you’d never have to deal with me again. I thought I was doing you all a favor.”
“You could have said no,” said Sharon who couldn’t hide her tears.
“I know.”
“And where are the pills now?” asked Neil.
“Emmet dumped them down the sink.” She glanced back at the tenor and gave him a slight smile. “I had a bit of a meltdown after the taping and Emmet’s been helping me get through it. It hasn’t been easy. Sharon, I think you need to give him a raise or make him a saint or something for dealing with me for nearly a month.”
Shane sighed and turned back to the group. “So that’s my piece. Again, please let me say that I’m so, so sorry about everything. I’m not asking for forgiveness, I’m not asking for anything. I just wanted to let you know what’s been going on and to tell you all goodbye properly.” She nodded and let out a breath. “Now, I’ve wasted enough of your time with my rambling. Have a good rehearsal and stay safe on the tour.”
Turning to leave a voice made her stop. “Shane wait.”
Keith walked over to her and ran a nervous hand through his hair. “You shouldn’t be the one apologizing. The minute that you walked into rehearsal the first day with that shiner I knew something was up. Then when everything happened with Jason I was so proud to stand up with you but when you got hurt in March I got scared. We nearly lost you and I couldn’t deal with that. When you ran I thought you hated us and seeing Emmet hurting was too much to deal with. I’m sorry, Shane. I acted like a jerk. Can you ever forgive me?”
The young woman stood in stunned silence for several moments. She couldn’t believe that Keith had acted the way he did because he was scared. She didn’t think Keith was scared of anything. “I…of course I forgive you.”
“Can we just start over?”
Shane nodded. “Sounds good.” She took a step back and held out her hand. “Shane Thompson.”
“Keith Harkin.” The blonde shook her hand and grinned before pulling her into a tight hug. She stiffened for a moment then returned the gesture. One by one she felt herself surrounded and soon was in the middle of a huge group hug.
As they broke apart more than one person was turning away to quickly wipe away tears. Shane smiled at the group then stood to the side with Emmet for a moment. He said something to her and she nodded and squeezed his hand before heading for the door.
Again she was stopped but this time it was by Sharon. “Shane, before you go I have a question for you.” The young woman turned and waited for the producer to catch up with her. “We haven’t found a junior lighting director yet and I’m sure Glenn wouldn’t mind stepping down…”
“No.”
The blonde’s face fell. “What?”
“No, let Glenn have his moment. I won’t come back as the senior lighting director but, if you’ll have me, I’ll be honored to be your junior lighting director again. If the kid can’t handle it then we’ll see.”
Sharon beamed and across the room Emmet’s smile lit up the space. He hadn’t known how he was going to get through an entire tour without seeing Shane and now his fears had been erased. He was going to be able to spend the tour with the woman he loved.
____________________________________________________
The weeks flew by all too quickly and before they knew it the cast and crew were arriving in St. Johns to prepare for the first show of the new tour.
When she had time Shane visited with the other cast and crew members, letting them in for the first time and really getting to know them while they got to know her. It was a little awkward at first but eventually they were able to put the past behind them and move on.
She enjoyed getting to know everyone but she really enjoyed the slagging that Emmet got from the others. It was obvious that they were together but it was difficult to define their relationship. They were always together and Shane hadn’t bothered to move out of Emmet’s guest room but aside from the impulsive moment in her hotel room months ago they hadn’t even kissed. Neither one seemed to mind, they just enjoyed being with each other but Shane did get a kick out of watching Emmet blush when the others teased him.
The night before the first show Emmet was watching a movie in his hotel room when Shane knocked on the door. He let her in with a smile which widened when she curled up next to him. “Is everything alright?” he asked while wrapping an arm around her waist.
“Yeah, I can’t get to sleep.”
“It’s still early, just relax.”
Shane zoned out the movie and tried to convince herself to sleep. Dimly she felt Emmet pull her closer and smiled slightly. Just as she was drifting off she felt his thumb brush across one of the scars on her stomach and she stiffed then pushed his hand away.
“Don’t.”
Emmet pulled his attention away from the movie and turned to glance down at her. “What did I do?”
“My scars. Please don’t touch them.”
“Does it hurt?”
“Not exactly it’s just…my scars have always been on the inside and I’ve been able to hide them. But these scars are there for everyone to see. It’s like I’m putting my pain out there on display.”
Emmet frowned and raised himself up on one arm so he could look down at Shane. “Well I happen to like them.”
Holding her gaze he ran his hand along her torso, bunching up her shirt until it pooled at her ribcage. Lowering his head he pressed a gentle kiss to the long scar that ran vertically down her stomach and felt more than heard her suck in a breath. He kissed the thin scar on her hip which had been caused by a shard of glass from the mirror, feeling her stomach tremble beneath his lips, then turned her arms over. Gently he brushed his lips over each of the fading scars on her forearms, smiling to himself when he saw goosebumps break out across her skin.
Raising himself up he pressed a kiss against the nearly invisible scar on her temple then smiled down at her. Shane’s eyes were wide yet she didn’t pull away from his embrace. “Your scars are beautiful because they’re part of who you are. They are beautiful. You are beautiful.”
Shane let out a little snort of amusement and shook her head. “I’m not beautiful, I’m tragic.”
Emmet paused for a moment and his thumb absently brushed the ‘Wicked’ logo tattooed on her hip. An idea hit him and he grinned. “Tragically beautiful?”
The techie thought for a moment and shook her head. “No. Beautifully tragic.”
“Perfect.”
Shane smiled and laughed then wrapped a hand around the back of his neck and pulled him down for a kiss.
THE END
