Ryan raked his hands through his hair and over his face. He took slow deep breaths attempting to slow his hammering heart and racing pulse. The dream had felt so real, he could feel her face against his, he could feel the damp morning. The way the sun slowly spread its rays, waking the world, and welcoming the start of a new day. The way her skin warmed under his hands as he held her there in the small garden. But her face, her face had faded the moment she turned in his arms. Had he actually spoken his native tongue in the dream, calling the woman "my love". It made no sense to him; had it even been him in the dream? Who else would he dream about and who was the woman? He pushed the comforter away and stumbled across the open suitcase and went to make coffee. As his mind began to clear he saw the two empty beer bottles on the counter. He understood why he would have dreamt about a woman, he had spent the bulk of the evening with Penny. He smiled when he thought of the sweet, blue eyes, the musicality of her laughter. He thought of the sparks he felt every time he even brushed her hand. There had never been such an istantaneous attraction to any other woman. He thought of the woman he had left back in Ireland and just as quickly pushed the thought from his mind. He checked his watch and saw he had to quickly get ready.

"You were certainly out late", Lucy looked at her room mate her stirred cream into her coffee.
"Nothing happened, Luc", Penny said sipping the hot liquid and taking a bite of a bagel.
"You can't expect me to honestly believe that", she dumped her dishes into the sink.
"I do, because it's true. We went to Charlie's."
"You went to Charlie's and didn't bring me anything?", she cut her off.
She laughed swallowing the bite she had just taken,"My mind wasn't exactly on you."
"Obviously", she teased,"What happened after?"
She shrugged,"We went back to his place and had a beer. Sat out on the balcony just talking."
"Talking? That's it?"
"I know, for your overly romantic mind that it's hard to believe, but it's the truth. He was a gentleman."
She studied her friend and then shook her head,"You're hiding something."
"What? I am not!"
"Yes you are, I have known you for way too long Penelope Carter. You like this guy and something more is going on."
"You are insane, Lucy!", she rolled her eyes and poured her remaining coffee into a to go container,"Let's drop it and get to work."
"Okay for now, Carter", she followed her room mate out the door,"You will have to come clean eventually."

Penny busied herself as soon as she got to work. The busier she was, the was the less time she had to think about Ryan and the strange dreams. The one last night had been new. She had heard herself speak and the lilt in the way she talked. She had never been to Ireland, why would she have an accent? But the man in the dream, who was he? The way he held her said that they were intimately acquainted. Everything had felt real, as if she had lived the moment. She sat at the nurse's station in deep thought over the dream.
"Hello, Penny", Ryan said leaning casually against the counter to look over a chart.
"Dr.Kelly", she looked up startled,"Can I help you with something?"
"The premie we delivered last night, I need to look over the blood tests."
"We have the results here", she fished the papers out from the baby's file,"His stats were good this morning. He'll be on a feeding tube for a bit longer, but the mother can come to see him."
"Good news", he smiled and cast his eyes back down at he test results,"Do you have plans after shift today?", he closed the folder and looked at her.
"Not at the moment", she quickly found files to sort through.
"Dinner tonight then? I can cook", he offered.
"I.....I don't know", she shrugged, not meeting his eyes,"It was late last night and.........well."
"It's just dinner, Penelope", he chuckled using her first name.
She mustered up the courage to finally look at him,"Maybe.....another night? I'm just tired."
He nodded,"Another night then", he quickly capped the pen in his hand and placed it in his pocket.
"Ryan", she said quickly and stopped as another nurse passed by,"I did have a nice time last night, I'm not just blowing you off."
"I'm a persistent man, Ms.Carter", he flashed a perfect grin before walking away.
She sighed, sinking back into her chair. She wouldn't be able to avoid him, everything in her body knew she wouldn't and knew she didn't want too. But her mind feared what sparked between them when he was too close or when he touched her. She wanted to turn off her over analytical brain and just go with the flow. She could usually manage that, but with Ryan, it was something else entirely. The rest of her shift was spent methodically responding to calls and making rounds on patients. It was eight o'clock when she was finally getting ready to leave for the day. She was grateful that Lucy had left earlier, she had planned a stop at Starbucks and then the grocery store. The store was quiet at that time of night. She was able to wander the aisles and enjoy the quiet after the hustle and bustle of the hospital.
Ryan spotted Penny as she cam down the aisle, a list in her hand and a pencil stuck in her hair. He smiled and pushed his cart towards her,"You shop at night as well?"
"Excuse me", she looked up and felt a heat run through her body as the icey eyes that smiled back at her,"Ryan," she said with a start,"Surprised to see you here."
"Needed a few things, suppose I should keep food in the house if I want to eat."
"That would be a good thing", she laughed,"I just needed a few things and it's always quiet at night."
"Something soothing about grocery stores", he looked around.
"It was nice to see you", she attempted to push the cart past him.
"Do I make you nervous, Penny?", he gently took her arm and enjoyed the jump in her pulse.
"No", she pulled her arm away,"Why.....why would you say that?"
"You have been avoiding me today and you seem to suddenly stammer when I talk to you."
She felt herself grow warm,"Maybe I'm just not used to someone like you."
"What does that mean?", he took a step closer to her.
"Nothing", she shook her head,"I'll see at work", she carefully stepped to the side and quickly left the aisle.

Over the next few weeks the dreams became different and more vivid. Penny was barely sleeping more than a few hours at night. She would awake crying or in a sweat. Dreams filled with images of a house, time spent over looking the green sloping hills of Ireland. Standing on the cliffs over looking the ocean as the mist clung to her clothes. In every dream there was a man. His face would never fully come into focus, but he was there. She could feel him, hear him, she had cried on his shoulder. But who was he? None of it made any sense to her. She had a few days off from work and decided to visit her parents.
"Mom, dad?", she called out entering the house.
"Look who's here", Kevin, her father said coming out from the living room.
"Hey, dad", she hugged him.
"Everything okay pumpkin?"
"Fine, just a day off and thought I would stop by."
"You're sure everything's okay?", he looked at the dark circles under her eyes.
She nodded,"Just working a lot, we have a new doctor in our wing and I have been taking on some more work. Just the usual."
"My daughter, always an over achiever", he laughed,"Your mother's out back working in her garden."
"Thanks", she kissed his cheek walking towards the kitchen. Grabbing a bottle of water from the refrigerator she made her way outside,"Hi, mom."
"Penny!", Lori, her mother looked up at her daughter,"What a nice surprise", she stood up wiping her hands on her jeans.
"Thought I would come by for a visit, I don't get here often enough. Water?", she held the bottle out.
"Thanks", she took the bottle and drank thirstily.
"Everything looks beautiful, mom", she ran her fingers over the petals of a rose. The garden had been her mother's haven since she could remember. She remembered helping out on summer mornings. Her friends would swim or go play, but all she wanted was to help her mother in the garden. It had been their place. To talk in confidence over boys or makeup. An upcoming dance. She sighed audibly, rubbing her eyes.
"Come sit", Lori took her daughter's hand and led her to the lounge chairs on the back porch,"You haven't been sleeping, have you?"
She shook her head,"Remember those dreams I started having when I was about thirteen?"
"The ones about the boat sinking and the man?"
"Those are the ones", she clasped her hands in her lap.
"Are you having them again? Did Lucy give you the psychiatrist's card?"
"Mom", she groaned,"I don't need a therapist, please. Can I just talk about this with you?"
"Okay", she studied her face, the deep dark circles that were etched under her daughter's eyes,"I'm just worried about you, Penny, that's all."
"I know, mom", she felt the lack of sleep settling in,"I'm having more dreams now. They involve Ireland and the same man. In one we're standing in a garden, in another I'm looking over cliffs, then I'm crying to him about not wanting to leave and about being afraid. But, I don't want to be without him. It's a physical pain when I think about not being with him. Then the one about the boat. I just...........just....I don't understand."
"Honey, you need to talk to a professional about this. You're not sleeping, I'm sure you're not eating properly. You need some help and there's nothing wrong with that."
"What if they think I'm crazy?"
"You're not crazy, Penny", she took her daughter's hands in hers,"This could be one of those things you hear about with the past lives and things like that. It wouldn't hurt."
"What's even stranger", she sniffed blinking back tears,"The dreams started to change when the new doctor came onto the staff."
"What new doctor?"
"He's from Ireland, his name is Ryan. We went out to dinner and ran into each other at the grocery store. I have been doing everything to avoid him and yet when I see him or even brush by him, it's the oddest feeling. There's a flash behind my eyes, almost like an electrical charge. Then the dreams started to change. I don't understand how he could be connected to any of it."
"That's very odd", she said,"Listen, call the psychiatrist, get an appointment. There's nothing wrong with just talking to someone. Especially someone who is equipped with the knowledge of what to say in order to help."
"I'll think about it", she agreed. She yawned widely and closed her eyes,"Can I take a nap?"
"Absolutely sweet heart", she helped her up and into the house,"Stay for dinner, I'll wake you up when it's ready", she kissed her cheek closing the door on the bedroom.

Ryan had been on call for nearly forty eight hours. The coffe and red bull was wearing off and he knew he needed to sleep. He checked in with the nurse's station and then found an empty on call room. He locked the door and nearly collapsed onto the small bed. His dreams had been ever present and shifting. Even when he did sleep he awoke as if he hadn't slept at all. Waking in cold sweats, or with a deep seeded fear that he had hurt someone. That he had left someone alone. The woman in his dreams, he had left her. They were in love and he had left her, the ship was going down and he was drowning. He would hear her when she called to him, it was always so real and when he would try to see her face she would vanish in a haze still reaching for him. He was asleep before he had time to process anything else.
***************************************************
The cold mist swirled in off the North Atlantic in an angry winter storm. He blew on his hands for warmth as he beded the horses down for the night. As he left the barn he saw the small lantern in the window glowing warmly. A warmth spread through him as he thought of the woman just on the other side. The woman who owned his heart,"Molly", he said her name suddenly as he walked into the small house.
She looked up and her face, he saw her face clearly. Sweet blue eyes and waves of red hair that moved like flames about her face with the breeze of the closing door,"Aye, Collin, are you all right?"
"Better now, love", he traced her jawline with the tip of his finger.
"You look you've seen a ghost", she pressed her cheek against his hand.
He shook his head,"I've just missed you", he felt the pain in his chest,"I've missed you for so long."
"I've been right here", she whispered as she began to fade from him.
***************************************************
It was him in her her dreams, it was Ryan. Penny sat up with tears streaming down her face. Only he wasn't Ryan, she had called him Collin.

Penny fidgeted nervously as she took in the office of the psychiatrist. She chewed absently on her finger nail as she looked at the degrees on the wall and listened to the murmers of conversation between the receptionist and the person on the phone. After the last dream, she had made the decision to make an appointment. It couldn't hurt right? To talk it out with someone who was a professional. She just didn't want to be thought of as crazy. She knew she wasn't and she knew what she had dreampt and how often it had been happening since Ryan had shown up at the hospital.
"Penelope", a shorter woman with graying her called out.
"Yes", she stood up.
"I'm doctor Raymond, it's a pleasure", she shook her hand,"Come on in."
"Thank you", she followed her into the small room. A couch was situated under a window, a chair sat opposite of it.
"It says here you have been having odd dreams and not sleeping well. Is that correct?"
"Yes ma'am", she nodded.
"Have a seat, dear", she motioned to the couch as she took up her seat in the large arm chair,"Tell me about these dreams."
Penny watched as the woman took out a pen and a pad of paper. This was it, the moment she had been dreading. Letting someone else know what went on inside of her mind. Taking a deep breath she began timidly, unsure as to how she should say everything.
"Penelope", Dr. Raymond smiled kindly,"You can speak openly, I am not here to judge you. I'm here to listen and help, what you say in this room stays with me and only me."
"Okay", she nodded. She continued on feeling stronger and more sure of herself. She talked about feeling odd or not normal because of the dreams. How often she wouldn't sleep because she couldn't take the emotional duress night after night. That even when she did sleep she would wake feeling tired, lost, and lonely. And then she started to talk about Ryan. The shifts in the dreams, her attempts to avoid him. The confusion she felt with him. Before she realized it she had been talking for nearly two hours,"I'm so sorry," she stopped,"Did I go over my time?"
"It's fine", the woman said,"You were my last patient of the day and it seems to me you needed to get this out."
"I did", she replied feeling a slight relief.
"First off, I am going to prescribe you a sleep aid. With being a NICU nurse, you need to sleep. The other thing I would like to try is something called a regression. Done under hypnosis."
"What does that do?"
"We may be able to regress back into what may be a past life and figure out who this person is."
"Is that possible?", she asked.
"It's not widely practiced, but I have helped a few people in your similar situation. We don't have to try it right away, we can work up to it."
"Okay", she agreed taking the prescription,"Thank you Dr. Raymond."
"Carlene at the desk will schedule your next session."
"Thank you again", she said as she went to the receptionist to schedule her session. She dropped her prescription off and headed home for dinner. Her stomach growled loudly at the idea of food. She saw Lucy's car as she pulled in the driveway. She knew her best friend would want to know what happened at the appointment with the therapist.
"Hey there!", Lucy said as her room mate dropped her purse and keys on the table.
"You are a saint, Luc", Penny smiled as the scent of lasagna drifted through the house.
"I know it",she laughed,"How did the appointment go?"
"Good", she said sneaking a tomato from the salad,"Doctor Raymond was very nice, she listened to me for almost two hours."
"What did she say?"
She shrugged wiping her fingers on a paper towel,"I'm not crazy", she laughed,"She gave me a sleep aid, which I have to pick up in about an hour and she has some therapies she would like to try."
"See, I told you it would be fine", she hugged her friend,"You'll feel better being able to sleep."
"I know", she nodded,"How was work?"
"A certain doctor asked about you", she teased,"Said you have been avoiding him like the plaugue. His words, not mine."
"I know", she sighed,"I feel bad, I have just needed some time to think about things and to figure out this whole therapist thing."
"Well, don't worry because he will be over here for dinner in about",she looked at her watch,"thirty minutes."
"Lucy!"
"What? The guy is nice, you won't talk to him, so now you have too."
"That's not fair."
