It was a warm June day in San Diego, California. Summer had just begun and every girl and boy spent every waking minute with their friends on the beach. The girls were relaxing in their bikini’s trying to get a head start on their tans, and the boys were playing in the waves. The boardwalk was crowded with couples holding hands and smiling together. On the bench closest to the beach was Maddie and Dylan, San Diego High School’s hottest couple. They had been together for seven months and every single teenager was jealous of them. Maddie was beautiful. She had wavy blonde hair with natural brown highlights in them that swayed down her back and green eyes that popped. Dylan had long, light brown hair that swept across his forehead. Maddie was the captain of the dance team, and Dylan was the star of the basketball team. They came straight out of a fairytale. They sat on that bench, hand in hand. As happy and perfect as they looked, no one knew the pain they were dealing with within their relationship.
“I can’t believe this is the last time I’m going to see you until school starts again,” Maddie told him as she looked into his bright hazel eyes.
“You know I wish I didn’t have to go,” he said apologetically.
“I just wish London weren’t so far away,” she confessed.
“Me too, babe,” he said as she rested her head on his bare, tan shoulder. “I’ll text you every day.”
“I know, but with the time difference it’s going to be hard to hold out an actual conversation.”
He took his free hand and picked her head up so that she was looking at him. “Don’t be so negative, we can make this work,” he told her.
“But how? A summer is a really long time Dylan, what if things change?” she asked him, knowing this conversation was taking a sharp turn.
“What would change?” he asked her. “I should be the one nervous about this whole thing! Look at yourself Madz, you’re beautiful. Any guy could take you from me in a heartbeat.”
“What so now you don’t trust me?” She knew that maybe she was over reacting, but she didn’t like the idea of having a boyfriend all the way across the world. After all, summer was a time to be young, wild, and free.
“Maybe I don’t! You know what’s changed Maddie? You have. You’re not the girl I asked out seven months ago.” He yelled at her, getting worked up. He didn’t know why Maddie was acting so strange, but because he was leaving soon, it was better if they got this out of their systems now rather than later.
Maddie suddenly got hit with reality. She had changed. No one was to say whether or not it was in a good or bad way, but things were different. The major thing inside of her that changed was her need for adventure. She was sick of the same old thing over and over again. “Are we breaking up?” she asked softly as the anger in her eyes faded. Just then, Dylan’s phone beeped.
“It’s time for me to leave, see you when school starts.” He said sadly as he stood up and started to walk away. She quickly jumped up and raced after him. She put his hand on his shoulder, signaling him to turn around.
“Where does this leave us?” she asked confused. She honestly didn’t know what had happened in the past five minutes. His feelings were mutual.
“I think we should take a break. Just have fun this summer. Don’t worry about me.” He told her as a tear ran down his cheek. This wasn’t what he wanted, but he knew deep down she wanted to be free. And he wanted her to be happy. She wiped his tear away and kissed him on the cheek.
“Have fun,” she turned around and walked towards the beach to tell her friends exactly what had just happened. Then, it hit her. Her first love just ended. The slight smile on her face quickly faded and the tears started pouring out of her eyes. She stood at the edge of the boardwalk, searching for the hot pink umbrella her and her best friends always used. She ran towards it as fast as she could and jumped onto her beach chair in the circle with her friends.
“Maddie what’s wrong?” her best friend Lyla asked her, concerned.
Maddie tried to speak but she couldn’t find the right words.
“Girl I know you’re upset about Dylan leaving but he’ll be back before you know it!” her other friend Jordyn added, trying to be helpful. This usually would be helpful, if they hadn’t just broken up.
“Yeah, it’ll be like he never left!” another friend Lacey added.
Finally, Maddie was able to speak. “Dylan and I broke up,” saying this only made her want to cry more.
“WHAT?!” Lyla yelled shockingly. “How did that happen?”
“I don’t even know. I’m not even sure if were broken up or not. He just said we should take a break.” She said confused.
“You’re better off without him,” Jordyn said, trying to say the right thing.
“Amen to that!” Lyla said, grabbing Maddie’s hand and pulling her up.
“Where are we going?” Maddie asked. “I really don’t want to do anything. I think I’m just going to head home now.”
“No way,” Lyla told her. She was always the one who knew how to have fun. “We’re going to show you that you DON’T need guys to make you happy.” Lacey and Jordyn stood up after them and they all headed towards the boardwalk. “First stop, ice cream. No break up is official without ice cream.”
This got a little chuckle out of Maddie.
They headed over to their favorite ice cream shop and ordered what they wanted. Maddie was a lot quieter than usual, and they all knew why.
“Maddie, this is going to be a summer to remember, I promise you that.” Lyla said, looking into her eyes. Lyla was a surfer. She had the tannest skin out of the four of them and dark blonde hair that landed just below her shoulders.
“You might have to prove it to me first. Can you guys sleepover tonight? I think I’m going to need people to distract me,” she asked her best friends.
“Hun you know I wish I could but I have to go to my cousins wedding tomorrow,” Lacey said apologetically.
“And I promised my mom I’d help her with dinner tonight,” Jordyn added.
“I’ll be there,” Lyla said knowing Maddie needed her there. Maddie didn’t mind Jordyn and Lacey couldn’t come. She loved them, but Lyla was her true best friend, and there were some things that Maddie just couldn’t talk about around the two of them.
After an hour or too, the four of them left each other and Maddie and Lyla walked back to Maddie’s house, which was only a five minute walk from the beach. After they showered they decided to go back to the boardwalk for dinner. Maddie put on short denim shorts with a leather braided belt and a white, flowy tank top. She let her beachy blonde hair fall naturally. They walked into their favorite pizza shop and sat at their usual booth. They were talking when suddenly Maddie noticed a group of girls crowding around a boy who looked flattered and annoyed at the same time.
“Classic pimp,” she whispered to Lyla and nudged her head in his direction.
“Oh my god! Maddie do you know who that is?” Lyla asked surprised, not taking her gaze off the boy.
Maddie examined him. He had snow white skin and dark brown hair which spiked up in the front. He had a small gap, which she found adorable. Still, she didn’t recognize him. “No, why do you?”
“That’s Damian McGinty. He’s a member of Celtic Thunder, that Irish band I told you about a few months ago.” Lyla said excitedly. “Isn’t he cute?”
Maddie couldn’t deny it, he was attractive. “Totally. He’s probably one of those cocky celebrities,” she replied.
“He seems pretty down to earth. Either way, he’s crazy talented. I’ll show you some of his stuff when we get home.” Lyla offered. Maddie nodded and they continued their previous conversation. They finished eating and left after they paid. “Ready to go?” Lyla asked.
“Not really,” Maddie replied. “I kind of want to walk around. Let’s go to the rides.” They walked towards the flashing lights, got their tickets, and walked towards the center of the area. They looked around and Maddie caught sight of the Farris Wheel. She saw couples sitting together, holding hands and kissing as they got to the top. After a half hour of not thinking about him, Dylan popped into her mind. “Hey Lyla, I think I need to get some air, I’ll meet you back here in a few, ok?”
Lyla agreed and walked over to some friends from school she saw. Maddie walked out of the crowd on the boardwalk and faced the beach. She took her shoes off and ran towards the beach. She stopped at the border of the water and sand. She closed her eyes and took in a deep breath of salty air. The wind blew her hair out of her face and she closed her eyes so she could just focus on the sound of the waves crashing.
“This is a nice place to get away from everything, isn’t it?” a voice interrupted Maddie’s focus. She jumped a little bit and opened her eyes. Next to her was Damian McGinty.
“I can’t believe this is the last time I’m going to see you until school starts again,” Maddie told him as she looked into his bright hazel eyes.
