Swiftly, sharply, the isle's song is sung, A whisper on the breeze, low but melodic. 'Tisn't a ballad with lyrics that can be spoken But only carried in the hearts and minds Of those who from birth know the clandestine tune. From mild Pacific to Atlantic chill Dublin town to Derry Quay From the cities of the US of A, Cross the seven seas, till the island Appears once again out of nowhere. Like a lighthouse from the stormy sea If ye roam far from home And do lose your way, Remember just the song you learned back in your early days. Singing from the highest mountain peaks From halfway round the world, A nation's silent anthem Can be heard in the hearts of her people. As far away as ye shall go And though you may wander thousands of miles Your heart will always lead you home. Back to your hometown, To your family, And back to where Ireland's tune Is the loudest, Echoing like a thunderous crash of a summer storm. -Deirdre McCann, November 24th, 2011. Written about my homeland. Hope you like, comments please! I'm not great at poetry, just thought I'd give it a shot. What do you all think?
