This is the "sequel" to George Wouldn't Lie! (because George is cool). Hope you enjoy! (It's not very long, sorry )
“All right, people. Here’s the deal. I have to go rescue my lads from some people in the middle of nowhere, Oregon. So you get to draw straws to see who’s going to babysit Daniel.” Sharon looked at them very sternly.
“Oh, that’s okay, Sharon,” Nicole said. “He’s such a sweet lad, it won’t be any trouble.”
“Yeah, he’s the littlest one. How much trouble can he get in?” Declan scoffed, doing drum imitations in the air.
“Declan, do you remember Damian at that age?” Sharon asked.
Declan nodded slowly.
“Now, draw straws.” Sharon gave them all The Look and held out a batch of straws.
They all drew at the same time and looked at their straws. They matched them up to find out who got the shortest. Sharon was watching them all closely.
Declan looked at his straw. “Oh, okay. I’ll watch the lad.”
Sharon gave a slight groan. “All right, Declan. No more than six pieces of candy and he needs to be in bed by eleven at the latest. Preferably ten. No movies beyond PG, and you have all my numbers if you need me. And make sure he brushes his teeth. I don’t want any of my lads having to go to the dentist while here. All right? Don’t let him out of your sight.”
Daniel walked in. “What’s goin’ on?” he asked, sucking a slushie.
Sharon groaned. “Daniel, what did I tell you about that?”
He grinned. “Me mam sent me the money for one.”
Sharon rolled her eyes. “Declan, remember what I said. Okay? I’ll be off, then.” She picked up her luggage and walked out the door. There was silence for a few moments as everyone waited for her to come back. It didn’t take long. She popped her head back in. “And remember that—”
“Sharon! Go!” everyone yelled at the same time.
“We know! We’re not kids!” Declan finished. He grinned at Daniel. “Wanna watch football and pig out on junk food?”
“Sure.” He grinned. “And then I want to go to Starbucks. I have about a bazillion gift cards that Sharon won’t ever let me use. She’s rationing them out. But I know where she keeps them!” He looked so innocent and happy.
Nicole stepped in. “Wait, lads...wait. Sharon said that you can’t do that kind of stuff.”
“What do you care? She’s just your boss!” Declan said.
“And yours, and I kinda like my job. I get to dress up!” She grinned. “And play pretty music. Anyway, if you want to keep your job, I suggest that you do as Sharon says.”
“Aw, she wouldn’t fire me. We have a three year contract. And it runs out a year from now. So I have a year to get her good will back.” He grinned. “Come on, Daniel! To Starbucks we go!”
Nicole rolled her eyes and went with them to make sure they didn’t do anything rash.
Daniel ran straight to the bass drum and unscrewed it so that he took off the front of the drum. There was a huge stack of gift cards. And something else. “That’s where my gummy bears from Denver, Colorado went!” He took a bite of one. “They’re still good.”
“Oh, can I have one?” Declan asked.
Nicole made a face. “Daniel. That was almost a year ago.”
“Yup. And they’re good. Right, Declan?”
Declan nodded happily.
She rolled her eyes.
“Wait,” Declan said, eating another gummy bear. “Is that what that funny sound was, rattling around in my bass drum? I was wondering about that!”
“Yeah, that’s why it’s a good idea to play instruments that you can’t hide stuff in,” Nicole smirked. “Like a harp. Let’s just go to Starbucks.”
Daniel grabbed a huge stack of Starbucks gift cards.
Nicole shut her eyes for a moment. “Daniel, you do not need that much coffee.”
“But I’m going to treat the whole band,” Daniel said, his big eyes looking completely innocent.
“Oh!” the pianist said from the corner. “He needs that many gift cards.”
Nicole sighed. “Sure, whatever, Daniel. Just hurry it up, okay?”
Daniel grinned. “Okay. You can have this card, you can have this one, you can...Declan, you can’t have that card! That’s a lot of money! I want it! Nicole, you can have this one, and here ya go. This one is mine. The rest...well, we can put those back when we want to.” He shoved them in his pocket. “Let’s go!”
They all went to Starbucks. And who should be just getting their coffee as they walked in but Joyce and Ruth O’Leary (aka Sephira, for the gentle reader).
“Hey!” Declan said. “How are you?”
“Declan!” Ruth yelled.
“Ruth, don’t shout,” Joyce said. She turned to Declan. “Declan!”
“How are you two?” he asked, grinning.
“Good!” Ruth said. “How are you?”
“Babysitting little Daniel here,” Declan said, grinning. “He’s a sweet lad.”
“A-hem,” Daniel cleared his throat.
“Declan, do you remember when Damian was this age?” Joyce asked. “He was a lot of trouble. I’d watch out if I were you.”
Daniel walked up to the counter, pretending not to notice the conversation around him. He pulled out his card and gave it to the man. “I would like an extra large hot chocolate with extra whipped cream.”
“You should order it Soy,” a person in front of him said.
“Why would I do that?” Daniel asked.
“Because it’s better for your voice.”
“What does that mean?” Daniel asked, slightly nervous.
“Well, you’re a singer, aren’t you? My little sister loves you.” The person accepted their drink and walked away, grinning at Daniel.
“No Soy, please,” Daniel said.
Declan and Nicole talked with Ruth and Joyce while everyone else ordered coffee. Next thing Declan knew, Daniel was pulling on his sleeve while holding three chocolate muffins. “Hey, hey,” he said.
“What?” Declan asked.
“Can we go back? There’s a match on that I wanna see.” He looked at Sephira and blinked innocently three times. “Please?”
“Aw, sure!” Ruth said.
“You can come to our place,” Joyce said.
“Everyone knows that we can’t trust Declan to watch you,” Ruth continued.
“Yeah, yeah,” Declan grumbled. “At least I’m better than Neil.”
“Yeah, considering Neil can’t keep track of himself,” Nicole laughed.
They all laughed.
“Where’d Daniel go?” Nicole asked nervously.
Declan spun around. “Uh oh...Sharon’s gonna kill us.”
They were frantically running around, looking for him. Two of them were looking through the store and two others went to Barnes & Noble next door, while the rest combed the streets.
Daniel watched them all with a smirk on his face. He pulled out his phone, sitting in the corner booth, and started playing Angry Birds.
