“Marry me?”
Sophia giggled, punching her best friend’s shoulder playfully. “Ryan, we’re 16, don’t you think we’re a bit young to be getting married?”
Ryan chuckled a bit. “S’pose so, yeah. But when we’re older, I do want to marry you.” He replied.
Sophia shook her head, still giggling. “You’re something else, Ryan Kelly, you know that?”
Ryan shrugged, turning his gaze toward the calm lake before him. He made no attempt to hide the frown that had taken over his facial features. The icy-blue eyed teenager was more than a little hurt that his best friend wasn’t taking him seriously.
“Hello? Earth to Ryan! Are you still with us?”
Ryan hadn’t realized that he was so deep in thought until he saw a rather petite hand go across his eyes. Immediately, he turned his gaze to Sophia. “Huh, what?”
His best friend laughed. “I didn’t mean to startle you, Ryan, but you haven’t said a word in nearly a half an hour. Are you alright?”
Ryan nodded. “Yeah, just thinkin’, I guess.” He picked up a flat stone from the ground beside him, turning it over in his hand once or twice before tossing it out into the water. The pair of teenagers watched as the stone skipped four times before finally settling at the bottom of the water. “We should head back, ya know. Your mum will be starting to worry before too long.”
“My mum?” Sophia questioned, accepting Ryan’s extended before he helped her up off the ground. “And what about your mum? She’ll be worried as well!”
“Nah, my mum knows I can take care of myself.” Ryan replied, not letting go if his best friend’s hand as the two made their way toward the tiny village known as The Moy.
“Oooh, I get it! You think you’re a tough guy, yeah?”
“Perhaps…” Ryan smirked.
Sophia laughed. “My, my Ryan, what am I to do with you?”
Ryan only shrugged as the pair continued their walk back to their neighboring houses, a comfortable silence falling over them. By now the sun had almost completely sank beneath the horizon, casting a dark shadow over the small village. Neither of the teens really had a set curfew, but it was understood that by darkfall, they were to be at home, or at least within the general vicinity of their houses.
“So, I guess I’ll see you tomorrow?” Sophia questioned as they stepped up onto her front porch.
“Of course. Would you like me to walk to school with you?”
Sophia nodded, smiling mischievously. “You know Ryan, we’ve been walking to school together every day since we were ten, you don’t have to ask anymore.”
Ryan chuckled lightly, scratching the back of his neck nervously.
“Yeah, I guess I don’t. Habit, I suppose. So, see you in the morning?”
“8:30 sharp.” Sophia stepped closer to Ryan and hugged him lightly.
“Goodnight, Ry.”
Ryan pulled her closer, tightening his arms around her waist slightly.
“Goodnight, Sophie, sweet dreams.”
After a moment more in the embrace, Sophia pulled away from the hug, murmuring another quiet “goodnight” before retreating into her house, leaving Ryan on the front porch staring at the door. The teen smiled slightly as he stepped off her porch and began walking toward his own. His hand had found its way into his pocket and was grasping the small circle of silver that he had been carrying around for quite some time now. Ryan carefully pulled the beautiful claddagh ring out of his pocket, smiling ever wider as the light from the moon played off the silver.
“One day this will be yours,my Sophie, if only I could get the courage to give it to you…”
