The Adopted Daughter.
I was at a PBS studio in Dublin waiting for my cue to go into the filming room where six year old Cassie was waiting to meet me since I had adopted her. She had been taken from my priest who had been wrongly abusing her and taken away her innocents. But to me she was still an innocent little six year old girl who needed a good life and a good home. So I was giving both of those to her right now. I finally heard my cue and walked into the studio in front of the cameras and saw Cassie sitting in a high stool. She was only about the size of an eighteen month old child because of the healing her body was trying to do. She turned to look at who was walking in behind her; I saw shock and disbelief in her face. I smiled kindly and warmly at her to put her at ease and help her relax.
“Morning Cassie. You looking a little shocked there lass, you alright?”
She just nodded at me just a wee bit overwhelmed that I was adopting her. I took a rag doll out from behind my back and held it out to her. It had on a pink dress with long blond yarn hair. She smiled shyly as she took the doll from me. Then the interviewer turned to me.
“So what made you decide to adopt her?”
“Well I heard about her and those with her who had been rescued from their abusive home of my priest. So I told the adoption agency that I wanted to adopt her. They gave me all the paper work and now here we are at the end. I do not believe in what was being done to these children so I wanted to give her a good home and a good life. A time to grow without fear, and have a true childhood.”
“Well I can see she is defiantly shocked that it’s you who wanted her. She must be a fan of yours.”
“That is very possible.”
I looked down at her as I stood next to her with my hand on her back to calm her down a little.
“You ever heard of me before lass?”
She looked up at me and nodded again. I smiled down at her with the most calming smile I could. Then I picked her up and gave her a gentle hug and sat her on my right arm. Cassie grabbed the shoulder seam of my silvery gray suit coat with her tiny left hand as she held the rag doll I gave her in her right hand. I saw every emotion in her big blue eyes that looked so much like mine. The PBS station anchor that was interviewing me handed Cassie a HUGE box. More like she scooted it a crossed the floor.
“We put this gift box together for the wee lass as a little starter.”
“Look at that Cassie they made up this huge box just for you.”
Cassie just kinda looked at me not really sure how to react. I kissed her forehead before I set her down on the floor then knelt down next to her to help her open the box. There were stuffed animals, dolls, doll clothes, other toys, and lots of dress up clothes. In the short time we were on camera I had managed to get Cassie to giggle at my silly faces I would make. By the time we were done I was holding her again and she was sound asleep in my arms. She had her tiny little head burrowed into my right shoulder. I had brought a few blankets with me for her which I had covered her in by the time she started to get sleepy. The police handed me what few things Cassie owned and it was there that I saw the First Celtic Thunder CD that we had made and the one she would hear all tour long. I got her in the car seat in the back seat of my car to drive home. She woke up on the way home and started crying thinking I had left her. I reached back with my left hand and patted her leg to let her know that I was still there. She calmed down and started talking to me like any little girl would talk to her dad.
“Is it okay if I call you daddy?”
I looked at her in the rearview mirror.
“Of course it is honey.”
“Okay, daddy what are you going to do with me when you leave with your friends to go sing?”
“I’ll take you with me sugar; no way would I leave you here at home while I was out having fun.”
“But then I’ll be in your way.”
“Not at all, I want you to come with me honey.”
“Daddy?”
“Yes sugar?”
“I’m hungry.”
“How does a good home cooked meal sound to you?”
“Yummy!”
I smiled at the sound of her joyful little voice. I got her home where I cooked a really good spaghetti dinner for Cassie and I. Cassie ate like a little monster, or a bottomless pit. Then I got her a bath and in her little footed pajamas. We sat down on the couch to watch a movie when she fell asleep, and I mean she was dead out asleep. I took her to my room and lay her down on the bed and tucked her in. I went and got ready for bed then came back in the room to hear her crying again.
“Hey what’s my little girl crying for?”
“I want my binky!”
“Okay honey I’ll go get it for you, don’t cry baby it’s okay.”
I kissed her forehead then ran and grabbed her pacifier for her. I handed her pacifier to her and she promptly put it in her mouth and calmed down. I crawled into bed next her to and let her cuddle up to my chest. Once she was comfortable I sang to her till she fell into a deep, restful, peaceful sleep. I soon fell asleep after her. I woke up later that night to Cassie crying, she was still asleep but she was screaming things like no, I’m sorry, please stop. I knew she was dreaming about being back in that horrible place that she had been trapped in. I reached over and shook her gently to wake her up.
“Cassie, Cassie hun wake up it’s okay.”
She woke up with fear in her eyes, she sat bold upright and screamed. I reached up and brushed the back of her left shoulder.
“Honey I’m right here, it’s okay Cassie you have nothing to fear baby girl.”
She threw herself into my arms where she cried uncontrollably, I wrap my arms around her and sang softly to her till she dropped off to sleep again. I fell into a light sleep so I would wake up soon as Cassie woke again, or went into another fit in her sleep. I woke the next morning before Cassie did happy that she had slept peacefully after her fit late in the night. When Cassie started to stir a little and moan I whispered to her as I held her closer to my chest.
“Hush now Cassie I’m right here my angel.”
She slowly woke up in my arms. I watched as her eyes fluttered open then she snuggled up closer to me as I held her tighter but not tight enough to hurt her. I took Cassie shopping that day and got her tons of cloths and rag dolls and more stuffed animals. Days passed and finally the day came that Sharon was to come visit so she could meet the little girl I was taking on tour with me, Cassie. I heard a knock on the door and ran to answer it and there was Sharon.
“Hey Sharon! Glad you made it safely.”
Just then I felt two little arms around my right leg and a tiny little head resting against my thigh right above my right knee. I looked down to see Cassie standing there, Sharon knelt down to Cassie’s size.
“Well now you must be Cassie. You dad talks about you all the time you know that?”
“Cassie shook her head no too nervous to talk to Sharon, and to shy.
“He does, he’s very proud of his little girl. He says all kinds of good things about you all the time.”
Cassie just gave Sharon a shy little smile as she slipped behind my legs to hide herself. I turned and held both my hands down to Cassie who reached up to me. I bent down and picked her up setting her on my left hip.
“Of course daddy’s proud of his little girl, because he loves his little girl.”
“I love you too daddy.”
I smiled then kissed her forehead. I set her down and said.
“Now how about you go get your rag dolls and show them to Sharon.”
“Yes daddy. Would you like to see my rag dolls Ms. Sharron.?”
“You bet I would lass.”
Cassie ran towards her room.
“Walk Cassie, don’t run. Man that girl is a ball of pure energy.”
“They always are, trust me I have two of them. They are crazy little things.”
“I believe it, I love her to death but she is hard to keep up with some days.”
“I know how that is.”
“Excuse me Ms. Sharon.”
“Yes Cassie.”
“I got my rag dolls.”
“Oh okay, let’s go into the living room and look at them.”
I smiled as Cassie took Sharon’s hand and led her into the living room to show off her prized rag dolls. I could hear Sharon commenting on each doll as I got ready to cook supper for the tree of us. After Cassie showed off all her dolls she put all but one back in her room. I heard her little feet running down the hall to come back to Sharon and I. I was about to tell her to walk and not run when I heard a loud thud and then Cassie starting to cry. I dropped what I was doing and ran to the hall to see Cassie standing right next to the wall holding the left side of her forehead with her left hand. I picked her up and held her in my left arm to try and calm her down and see how bad she hit the wall with her head.
“Did you hit your head on the wall?”
She nodded her head and she dropped her head to my left shoulder. I finally got her to move her hand so I could look at her forehead. There was a little scratch where she had hit her head on the wall so I took her to the bathroom to clean the scratch off with hydrogen-peroxide. I grabbed a cotton ball and wet it with the peroxide then gently dabbed that on the tiny cut, which made Cassie scream even louder from the sting. I blew on the cut to make it sting a little less then I put a Band-Aid on it to keep the air from getting to it. I picked Cassie back up from the bathroom counter and carried her around as I cooked supper. Then I heard a knock on the door so I went to answer it. There was two officers standing there in front of me.
“Can I help you two officers?”
“We got a call that there was a screaming girl in this room. What’s going on?”
“Cassie was running down the hall and fell hitting her head on the wall. She scratched it a little so I cleaned it with peroxide to keep from infection. That’s why someone heard her screaming.”
One of the officers got Cassie’s attention and asked her.
“Hey there honey, what happened to your head?”
“I hit it on the wall.”
Then Cassie buried her face in my left shoulder again. I know the officers would get no more out of her then that. She hated men unless I was the man, because I had given her a home, love, and a life.
“How can we know you’re not making her say that?”
Just then Sharon walked up behind me.
“Paul, is everything alright?”
“They don’t believe that Cassie fell and hit her head on the wall they are thinking I was beating her.”
“Now, now sir that is not what we said.”
“No, but I know you’re thinking it. Do I look like someone who would beat my own child?”
“Paul calm down, arguing will only get you in trouble. I have this man’s application and all his legal papers for Cassie if you would like to see them.”
“Please ma’am if you would not mind.”
“Not at all, please come in and have a seat while I go get them.”
“Thank you ma’am.”
We sat in the living room to wait for Sharon. I sat in the rocking chair to try and rock Cassie to sleep for a little while. Cassie sat in my lap straddling my left leg, as I patted her back with my right hand and sang softly to her. I got her to sleep and covered up in a few of her really soft warm fleece blankets that my mother had made for her. My mum loved making tie throws for the grandkids so she made a whole huge box of them for Cassie with all kinds of animals and flowers on them. So I grabbed about three of them and put them over Cassie who sat leaning the right side of her face on my chest as she sat in my lap, sound asleep. Sharon finally came back in the room a few folders that held all the paper work the officers would need to look at. She smiled at Cassie sleeping in my lap. Cassie always looked like such a perfect little angel when she was peacefully asleep. Most of the time I would say she was an angel, because it was true. She was happy, bubbly, and laughed a lot now that she had been given a real life when I took her as mine. Both the officers smiled at my sleeping angel, because she was just too cute for words. They looked all the papers over then stood to leave.
“Sorry for the misunderstanding sir. That sure is a very adorable little girl you have.”
“Thank you officer. Cassie is my little angel, and ball of pure energy.”
“Aye, they sure are when they’re that size; she’s what, eighteen months?”
“No she’s six years old. She’s just really small.”
“Why is she so small?”
“I adopted her out of an abusive place where she had lived for six years being horribly violated taking away her innocents. So her body has a lot of heeling to do before she can grow like other girls her age.”
“Poor girl, she looks like she is really friendly and sweet.”
“If she knows you she is, but if you’re a stranger to her then she is really, really shy and won’t talk to you. She is just that way because of her past of being violated so horridly. To me she is still an innocent little girl because it was not her choice to be born into that home of the priest as the daughter of a concubine and turned into a concubine by her father.”
“Oh so she’s one of those little girls.”
“Yep. She’s one of those poor little angels.”
“She’s not so poor now that she has you to care for her and love her. But when you go on tour with this group Celtic Thunder what are you going to do with her?”
“Take her with me of course. I would never leave her at home while I was gone for so long.”
“How will you take care of her and work at the same time?”
“I’ll manage I can promise you that officer. She’s my baby and I love her more than anyone on this earth. No one could get more love from me than my little girl.”
“We wish you well on your new tour and with yours and Cassie’s new adventure.”
“Thank you officers, the well wishes are greatly appreciated.”
“Latter, sir, ma’am.”
They finally left and I got back to cooking the spaghetti dinner. Soon as the food began to really, really smell good Cassie started to wake up a little, but not really enough to know what you were saying to her or doing with her. Once I got supper on the table with Sharon’s help I woke Cassie up.
“Cassie, Cassie come on honey wake up. It’s time to eat supper baby.”
Cassie started moaning while she was waking up. She finally opened her big blue eyes and pushed herself off of my shoulder.
“Hey, welcome to the land of the living.”
“That’s not funny daddy.”
“Sorry honey, how about some food, a bath, a movie, and then bed. Sound good to you?”
“Yeah.”
“Okay we can do that.”
