I tink this will more than make up for the horrible cliffy, but then again, maybe not. You be the judge.
“Hi,” he started, “I'm Paul, lovely evening don't ya tink?”
“Yeah, yeah it is, isn't it?” Ryan decided. “I'm Ryan, and this is my girlfriend, Siobhan. Nice to meet you Paul.” he introduced.
“Yes, it's a pleasure to meet you Paul.” Siobhan agreed. “Ryan has just moved to the area, so we haven't really met anyone from this side of town.” she told him.
“Really, it's great to meet the both of you then. I've lived here for as long as I can remember. So, it's great to meet some new blood so to speak.” He confessed. “So, I saw you sign up Ryan, any idea what you're going to be singing for us tonight?” Paul asked purely curious.
“I have an idea of what I want to sing, but I want it to be a surprise for Siobhan.” Ryan smiled at Siobhan.
“Ah, I more than understand, so what about you Siobhan, are you going to grace us with your singing tonight.” Paul asked.
“No,” she said simply. “Are you singing tonight?”
“Why of course I am, wouldn't miss it for the world.” he smiled.
“So what are you going to sing?” she asked him
“She” he stated.
“Beg your pardon?” Siobhan asked confused now.
“She” he said once again, “It's the name of a song.”
“Oh,” Siobhan buried her head in Ryan's shoulder, completely embarrassed.
“It's nothing to be embarrassed about Siobhan.” Paul started. “Most people have never heard of the song. Some would say it's 'Out of Date'” he quoted with his fingers, while rolling his eyes.
Just then the announcer called for everyone's attention. “Ladies and Gents,” he began. “Tonight, Tara Hadley is going to kick off our little karaoke session.” He motioned for Tara. “Tara, come on up.”
A blonde headed girl walked up on stage. She looked nervous, which was understandable. But she shrugged it off, and told the announcer what she was to sing. He nodded, with a small sad smile, and started the music. Tara took the mike and sat down on a lone wooden stool placed in the center of the stage. As the music started, she never looked up, just down at her lap.
Ryan immediately recalled the song, and partially understood why the announcer had given her the sad look. He looked down at Siobhan, this wonderful girl, he had somehow come to know and lightly placed a kiss on the top of her head, he took a second to just smell her hair and revel in her presence before the song took it out of him.
“You can have my heart
But it isn't new” She started, the room hushed, and she slowly raised her head. She was absolutely beautiful, but anyone could tell that this beauty had been broken. Some how, somewhere down the road, something had happened to her that broke her, and she still hadn't recovered.
“It's been used and broken
And only comes in blue
It's been down a long road
And it got dirty on the way
If I give it to you will you make it clean
And wash the pain away”
A few tears rolled down Siobhan's cheeks, and Ryan noticing pulled her closer. Whispering in her ear. “I've got you.”
A small gasp could be heard from Paul sitting across from them. He couldn't take his eyes off of her. At one point he thought she looked at him, and for a moment, his heart beating strongly in his chest, stopped. He was smitten, for some reason with this broken angel before them, baring her heart for all to see. He longed to run to her, but knew he must hold his seat. This was not the time, but that time would come, and he would be ready.
From her seat on the stool, Tara glanced out at the audience. She knew how vulnerable she must look. She could see that on some of the faces. If only they knew, she told herself, if only they knew why, they wouldn't give me two seconds notice. At one point her gaze fell upon a gorgeous man, who looked at her as if she were the goddess Venus herself. But that couldn't be right she told herself, and forced her gaze elsewhere.
“You can have my heart
If you don't mind broken things
You can have my heart if you don't mind these tears
Well I heard that you make old things new
So I give these pieces all to you
If you want it you can have my heart”
“So beyond repair
Nothing I could do
I tried to fix it myself
But it was only worse when I got through
Then you walked right into my darkness
And you speak words so sweet
And you hold me like a child
Till my frozen tears fall at your feet “
Once more Tara found her gaze frozen upon the mystery gent, and once again she saw the same longing look in his eyes. As she gazed at him, a lone tear escaped and gently rolled down her cheek.
Paul was mesmerized. His heart tugged at him, but not just for the sadness of the tune, but at the same time, for joy. Then he noticed the single teardrop, and his world changed. His heart screamed at him, to do something. This angel should not be crying it told him. But he couldn't move, not yet.
“You can have my heart
If you don't mind broken things
You can have my heart if you don't mind these tears
Well I heard that you make old things new
So I give these pieces all to you
If you want it you can have my heart.”
She finished, her last perfect note hovered in the air. The room was silent. So silent, a fly could have had a heart attack and everyone would have heard it. The emotions flowing could have been sliced with a knife. By the end of her performance, she had commanded the room, and many women could be seen trying to hide their tears. Slowly she descended the stage and took her seat. No one said a word, not wanting to be the inconsiderate one who broke the mood. Slowly the announcer took the mike once again.
“Thank you Tara for that moving performance.” She nodded at him to continue, and he did. “Next up we have one, Paul Byrom. Paul will you come on up?”
Paul smiled at both Ryan and Siobhan, and walked up on stage, whispered what he wanted to sing to the announcer, who looked puzzled but obliged, and started the music.
“She” He started and the room hushed.
“May be the face I can't forget
A trace of pleasure or regret
May be my treasure or the price I have to pay
She may be the song that summer sings
May be the chill that autumn brings
May be a hundred different things
Within the measure of a day.”
Siobhan began to nestle into Ryan's shoulder, surrendering herself to the essence of the music. Allowing herself to feel the warmth and love that flowed from her loving boyfriend right next to her. While the rest of the pub, listened on in complete silence.
While Siobhan was cozying up with Ryan, Paul's eyes were searching the room, face to face, a small smile here or there, maybe an eyebrow there, before resting on a set of bright blue eyes.
“She” he sang now with conviction.
“May be the beauty or the beast
May be the famine or the feast
May turn each day into a heaven or a heck
She may be the mirror of my dreams
A smile reflected in a stream
She may not be what she may seem
Inside her shell”
Tara blushed when she realized that this god before her was singing not at her, but to her. From the moment their eyes locked, he hadn't looked at anyone else, and though she was highly embarrassed, she was, if she admitted to herself, she was a bit giddy. No one had ever looked at her with such intensity. It was intimidating, but she knew somehow, that this Paul, was special, and if he wanted to, she would give him a shot. Even if after learning the truth about her, he dumped her flat on her rear, she knew that she needed to give someone a chance.
Paul grinned when she blushed. He couldn't help it, he was somehow drawn to this girl. He had never seen her before, but something about her spoke to him, something in her somber attitude, cried for him, called to him. Maybe he was the one that would make her smile. Maybe it was up to him, to bring this angel back to the world of the living. But he knew he must finish the song before he could go to her, so he made it his mission to make sure that she knew that this song was for her.
She who always seems so happy in a crowd
Whose eyes can be so private and so proud
No one's allowed to see them when they cry
She may be the love that cannot hope to last
May come to me from shadows of the past
That I'll remember till the day I die
She
May be the reason I survive
The why and wherefore I'm alive
The one I'll care for through the rough and ready years
Me I'll take her laughter and her tears
And make them all my souvenirs
For where she goes I've got to be
The meaning of my life is
“She, she, she” He finished. The crowd rose to it's feet in applause, but Paul didn't acknowledge them, instead he descended the stage, as if from heaven, and advanced upon the girl, taking her hand bringing it up to his lips and gently kissing it, he introduced himself. “Hi” he breathed, “I'm Paul.”
“Hello” she said, blushing a bright rose. “I'm Tara”
While Paul and Tara were making nice, Siobhan and Ryan who had witnessed the entire thing from their booth, smiled at one anther before he gently kissed her.
“I didn't realize he could sing.” Ryan said, “but that lad, has got something special. He seems like a great guy though.”
Siobhan nodded. “Yeah, that he does.”
From the stage the announcer called for everyone's attention once more, “Well, I wouldn't want to be the one to follow those two. Well done Paul.” Everyone applauded again. He then called out a name and someone else took the stage.
The night carried on for a while, and then the announcer called Ryan Kelly to the stage. Ryan gulped, smiled, kissed Siobhan and headed toward the stage, whispered his song choice in the announcer's ear, and prepared to sing.
The music started, and Siobhan smiled to herself, realizing which song he had chosen, and that it most certainly was meant for her.
Paul from his seat, now next to Tara, stopped his chatter, pointed at Ryan and whispered that he knew him, and wanted to hear.
Look into my eyes - you will see
What you mean to me
Search your heart - search your soul
And when you find me there you'll search no more
Don't tell me it's not worth tryin' for
You can't tell me it's not worth dyin' for
You know it's true
Everything I do - I do it for you
Look into your heart - you will find
There's nothin' there to hide
Take me as I am - take my life
I would give it all - I would sacrifice
Don't tell me it's not worth fightin' for
I can't help it - there's nothin' I want more
You know it's true
Everything I do - I do it for you
There's no love - like your love
And no other - could give more love
There's nowhere - unless you're there
All the time - all the way
Oh - you can't tell me it's not worth tryin' for
I can't help it - there's nothin' I want more
I would fight for you - I'd lie for you
Walk the wire for you - yeah I'd die for you
You know it's true
Everything I do - I do it for you
The whole while he was singing, his eyes remained locked on Siobhan. Upon finishing his last note, the crowd for the second time that night stood to it's feet, in applause. Ryan nodded, accepted a few pats on his back and made his way back to Siobhan.
“Oh Ryan,” she breathed kissing him, “I had no idea you were so talented. Thank you.”
“Only for you.” he whispered in her ear before taking his seat net to her. Pulling her in close.
“What about Paul, and that girl, Tara?” She asked
“What about them?” Ryan questioned not getting where she was going.
“Did you see the way they were looking at each other?”
“Mmm...” he breathed in her ear.
She batted at him. “Stop it Ryan, I'm being serious.”
“I know, he sighed, I don't really know what to make of it. It seams like something out of one of those romance novels in your office.”
“Ryan...” She played hitting his shoulder once again.
“I know, I know, you think I should call them over?” he asked
“Sure!” she said, getting excited.
“Ok, just a second.” he got up and walked over to Paul, tapping him on the shoulder to get him attention. It took him a moment, and then he was back on his way over with Paul and Tara tailing behind him.
Once everyone was comfortably seated, introductions were made, along with small talk. Siobhan and Tara seamed to hit it off right off the bat, and Ryan could see why. They were almost the same. Quiet and reserved, but he hoped that with time, like Siobhan, Tara would come out of her shell. And then the most unexpected thing happened.
“Siobhan Brodie, Siobhan come on up.” said the announcer.
