Thanks Swim! Here's the next bit!
and I shut my eyes, Neil’s good hand around my neck in an attempt to shield me. A breeze sweeps over our head as yet another wolf joins the fight. I turn, trying to get a glimpse of the wrestling animals. Neil only covers my eyes again. I squeal into his shirt.
ohnoohnoohnoohnoohnoohnoohnoohnoohno.
“It’s okay…you can look now.” It is not Neil’s voice I hear. But a woman’s. Inside my head. And so I look up, my cheeks stained with tears I didn’t know I cried. The abnormally sized alpha male lays at the feet of its mate. The she wolf is settled on its haunches, panting. It gives a yip and raises a paw, at the same time lowering its head below it’s raised paw in a greeting. It gets to its feet and lopes towards us. Neil pushes me back, at the same time stepping in front of me.
“How nice of you to protect her.” The she wolf stops, tilting its head at us in amusement.
“It speaks.” I murmur. The guitarist trembles, falling to his knees. I gasp, moving to help him up.
“…You’re hurt.”
The she-wolf starts towards us again, steps away from Neil.
“Don’t…touch me…” he says, voice shaking among its utter boldness. She paused, now two steps away from us. The wolf stretches out her tongue cautiously. I clutch at Neil’s side, nervous. The wolf turns her head towards the guitarist’s left shoulder, and laps at it with her tongue, before settling on its haunches, “There. Done.” I watch as the wound heals, closing in out itself.
Neil barely notices as he asks the wolf, “What are you?”
She pulls her muzzle back into a wolfish grin, I am a wolf…I respond to your friend there. They both look at me.
“Me?” I squeak, “What do you mean?”
“Did you not call me?” [/i]she blinks at me, “You have met my pups have you not?” My memories flash back to the park and to those times with Piper.
“But you only respond to Piper.” I say at last, “Never to me.”
Piper?” the she wolf bows its head to me, No. Always to you. Name me. Bind my soul. I do only what you will.”
I consider, “Brisingr. Are you sure you don’t know Piper?”
“Yes.” the she wolf replied, her voice echoing in my head. “Brisingr.” I say again, “I hold you to that name.”
“Your wish is my command,”[/i] the she wolf -no…Brisingr… yips at me again, ”And my pups?
“Echo. Delta. Snuffles.” I answer, “I’m sorry about your…ah…friend.”
“Do not be.” She wags her tail, “It’s not your fault. You have great power Miss Rosa.[/i]
The wolf turns and pads into the distance, shrinking to the size of a regular wolf, her voice fading within the contents of my mind, “You’ll do great things my dear. I have faith in you.
Time restarted. We are back in Dublin on our blanket on the grass, overlooking the city.
“That was weird.” I say.
He manages a wary smile, “If they hurt you…” Neil takes my hand.
“They wouldn’t dare.”
“I believe you.” he murmurs.
“So. Where do you wanna go next?”[/color]
