At 6:45 the next morning Mercy stopped at the nurse’s station to pick up her charts. “So Mac, anything exciting?”
The charge nurse sighed and cleaned her glasses. “Luckily no, we’ve got three discharges this morning and two are moving to recovery. Looks like you’re going to have three patients besides Sam, your rock star, and whoever decides to act a fool and end up in here.”
“Sam’s still here?” she asked. “Why haven’t they taken her to the floor yet?”
The older nurse rolled her eyes. “The P.D. are still having issues with the whole custody battle and we’re on babysitting duty until it gets sorted out. The team on the floor is swamped and they know we can keep a better eye on her down here.”
Mercy shook her head as she flipped through the charts. Sam was a sweet little nine year old who had been caught, literally, in the middle of a nasty domestic dispute. She had been too shocked to tell the police anything and both parents were denying the incident.
“All and all it seems pretty slow but you know that won’t last,” said the charge nurse while finishing up her duties.
“Ain’t that the truth,” mumbled Mercy while going to relieve Darrel, the night nurse.
Mercy couldn’t help but smile when she saw Darrel, he was like a giant teddy bear with a personality to match. He could be tough as nails when the situation called for it but overall he was easy going and made the hectic life of the ER a little more bearable.
“How’s it going, Der?” she asked.
The nurse turned and smiled. “All’s quiet on the Western front,” he replied. “No major drama and Sam made it through the night without any nightmares.”
Mercy glanced over his notes and jotted down any pertinent information. “How’s the patient in six?”
“His fever broke about an hour ago but he still hasn’t woken up. He’s got a nasty bug, it’s a good thing that you were there or this could have ended badly.”
Mercy shrugged, “Right place, right time. And he would have been fine, just a loss of consciousnesses due to an accelerated pulse.”
Darrell grinned to himself as Mercy looked over her patients’ reports. She had a handsome young man on her hall and she was only concerned with his vitals. Sometimes he wondered if she had a romantic bone in her body.
“Anything else?” she asked while tucking her hair behind her ear.
“I think that’s all. I’m going to head home. See you tonight.”
“Drive safe,” called Mercy over her shoulder before beginning her rounds.

Glad Mercy allowed the Lads to see Neil before they left. Also happy that Neil's fever broke! And I have a feeling somehow Sam is going to play a part in Neil's and Mercy's Romance! NOW ALL NEIL NEEDS TO DO IS WAKE UP!

Mercy’s morning was pretty quiet and she thanked Cindy, otherwise known as Mac, for putting her in observation instead of in trauma. Two out of three of her discharges were already awake and didn’t want any breakfast since they would be leaving soon. The other discharge was still sleeping and Mercy did a final check of his vitals before slipping out of the room.
Both of her transfers were awake and she made a note to get their breakfasts ready. Little Sam was still sleeping and Mercy frowned when she saw that the girl was sucking her thumb. Gently she pulled the digit from her mouth and smoothed back the girl’s blonde hair before going to check on her other three charges.
Neil was Mercy’s last patient and was still sleeping when she entered the room. Checking his vitals she was pleased to see that his temperature was down to 99 and sinking at a steady rate. He still wheezed with every breath and Mercy wished there was something she could do. She would have to wait until he was awake to give him something to ease the blockage in his lungs, in this state he could choke if he started coughing.
She was about to leave when Neil let out a low groan. Turning Mercy saw that he was beginning to stir and was immediately at his bedside.
It took several minutes for his eyes to flicker open and he looked around in confusion. Neil started to sit up and Mercy eased him back down onto the bed. “Take it easy, Neil.”
He tried to speak but all that came out was a ragged croak. Mercy picked up a glass of water and brought a straw to his lips. “Small sips or you’ll make yourself sick.”
Neil complied and after a moment attempted to speak again. “Where am I?” he asked. His throat felt like sandpaper and it took every ounce of effort he had to form the words.
“You’re in the hospital. Can you remember anything from last night?”
A crease formed between Neil’s eyes as he attempted to recall the previous night. The concert had been a struggle, he had fought all night against a throbbing headache and the persistent ache in his chest. Somehow he had finished the show and remembered that Declan and Brendan had to help him off of the stage. He had gotten changed and had bumped into Ryan in the hall…after that everything went black.
“Not much,” he finally admitted.
“You collapsed backstage after the show and gave everyone quite a scare I might add.”
Neil frowned and took another sip of water. “Have we met? You seem familiar.”
Mercy smiled slightly. “I was there when you went down. You probably could hear me talking.”
“Why where you…” Neil’s voice trailed off as the realization hit him. “You’re Dom’s friend, aren’t you?”
Mercy nodded and Neil felt his cheeks flush with embarrassment instead of fever. Last night he was supposed to meet the lovely friend of Dominique and had ended up making her acquaintance by passing out on the floor.
The young woman picked up on his discomfort and smiled knowingly. “If it makes you feel better I’m used to seeing people at their worst.” Standing Mercy made her way to the door. “Try and get some rest I’m sure your friends will be here soon.”
Stepping into the hall Mercy glanced back towards Neil’s room and grinned. “If that’s what he looks like at his worst I may not survive seeing him at his best,” she laughed to herself then headed down the hall to get everyone’s breakfasts and morning medications ready.

When Mercy made her next set of rounds Neil was sitting propped up and had company. All five of Neil’s band mates were scattered across the room and Dominique was joining them.
“Dom, what are you doing here? I thought you had a flight?”
“We do but we wanted to check on Neil first.”
“And we wanted to thank you again,” said Paul with a smile. “You really went above and beyond last night.”
Mercy shrugged off the compliment and began to clear Neil’s breakfast tray away. “Just doing my job. Now you two better get going or you’ll miss your flight.” Dominique hugged Mercy quickly before leading Paul out of the room.
Picking up Neil’s chart she glanced over at the young man. “Feeling any better?”
“A bit,” Neil croaked. “But I feel like there’s a two ton weight on my chest.”
“I brought something to help with that,” she grabbed a small paper cup from the side table and handed it to him. “This will help break up the blockage in your lungs. It’ll make you cough but you’ll feel better, I promise.”
Neil took the two pills and eyed Mercy warily as she pulled a syringe from her pocket. “Don’t look so worried, it’s essentially hospital grade Dayquil. It’ll help with the aches and will boost your immunity since you’re extremely susceptible right now.” Neil nodded and watched as she injected the serum into his IV line.
Even through his discomfort Neil could tell the young woman was stunning. Her skin was fair and smooth which was offset by raven black locks and striking green eyes. Her hair was pulled back into a practical bun but she was constantly tucking an errant strand of hair behind her ear. Neil suddenly realized that he was starting and quickly averted his eyes.
Mercy nodded her farewell to the group as she took Neil’s tray away. “I’ll be back to check on you later. Just press the call button if you need anything and let him rest, guys. I don’t want to have to chase you out of here.”
“Yes ma’am,” replied Keith as Mercy headed back down the hall.
“How are you doing this morning, lad?” asked George while settling himself in one of the chairs.
“Better,” Neil managed before beginning to cough. His chest felt like it was on fire but Mercy was right, whatever was clogging up his chest was beginning to release its grip. He noticed that his friends were oddly quiet and he frowned.
“What?”
“Well…” Ryan started. “We were all going to head home for the break but since you’re sick…” his words trailed off and Damian picked up the thread.
“None of us felt comfortable just leaving you here. You should have heard the argument between Dom and Paul last night.”
Neil shook his head and forced a weak smile. “Don’t worry about me guys, go home and enjoy the break. Sharon sent me an e-mail this morning and she’s set up a place for me to rest and relax until the tour picks back up. I wouldn’t be able to travel anyway and I don’t want you guys to miss the break just because of me.”
“Are you sure?” asked Keith. “None of us would mind staying.”
Neil nodded and settled back against the pillows. “I’m sure. Go and enjoy yourselves. Just remember that you all owe me a pint when I get out of here.”
The group laughed and one by one said their goodbyes. Neil waved as they departed and felt his eyelids growing heavy. He let himself drift off and dreamt of a dark haired beauty with green eyes.

Wow! That must have been some fight between Paul and Dom! But Dom won! Even Sick Neil is still the sweet unselfish Irishman we all know! Love how Neil is as smitten with Mercy as she is with Neil! Something tells me Neil is going to have the better break!

Neil slept for most of the day and found himself looking towards the doorway to see if Mercy was there each time he woke. He only saw her twice and each time it was only for a few minutes. Apparently her patient load had grown and she was constantly running around to check on everyone.
Right before dinner the day shift doctor, Stephanie Rogers, came to check on him. After listening to his lungs and checking over his vital signs Dr. Rogers told Neil he’d be able to go home the next day. “You’re still going to have a persistent cough but that should fade in a few days. Dr. Carter will examine you one last time in the morning but I’d say your safe to head home tomorrow. Just take it easy, you’re still quite sick and you’ll end up back here if you over do it. Any questions?”
Neil shook his head and thanked the doctor as she left his room. A few minutes later Mercy appeared carrying his dinner tray and he beamed. “You seem to be feeling better,” she said as she placed the tray on the side table.
“I do feel a bit better. Still tired but I can actually breathe now so that’s an improvement.”
Mercy laughed and Neil felt his heart skip a beat. She glanced around conspiratorially then grinned. “I brought you a present.” Reaching into one of her pockets she withdrew a popsicle and it was Neil’s turn to laugh.
“Thank you! How did you know I’d want ice cream?”
Mercy handed him the treat and shrugged. “Whenever my throat hurts all I want is ice cream. After such a rough day yesterday I figured you deserved something special.”
“I appreciate it,” replied Neil before tearing into the sweet treat. The cold liquid felt like bliss on his ravaged throat and he smiled.
Mercy set up his dinner tray and turned to leave when Neil stopped her. “Mercy? Do you have a minute?”
“Of course, what can I do for you?”
Neil shifted slightly then smiled shyly at her. “Well, I’m so used to being around the other lads that I…well…”
“You’re lonely.”
Neil blushed and nodded. Mercy smiled in understanding and settled herself in the chair next to his bed. “I can spare a few minutes while everyone eats their dinner. But you have to eat while we talk.”
Nodding, Neil finished his popsicle and pulled his tray closer. “How long have you been a nurse?”
“I started working in hospitals straight out of college so almost ten years now.”
“Really? Why nursing?”
“My freshman year of college one of my friends collapsed outside of class. I was absolutely terrified because I didn’t know what to do and hated feeling so helpless. I never wanted to feel like that again so I enrolled in the nursing program.”
“Do you like it?”
“I love it. Sometimes it’s hard and it does wear on you but the satisfaction of knowing that I helped save a life is worth the pain.” Mercy paused for a moment while Neil ate then leaned forward. “Okay, my turn. So you can sing, play the guitar and play the drums. What other instruments can you play?”
The two spent the next fifteen minutes chatting before Mercy glanced at the clock and jumped up. “I’ve got to get everything ready for the night shift and make my last rounds. Sorry, but I’ve got to go.”
Neil nodded and waved at her. “Will I see you in the morning before I leave?”
“Probably, I’m back in at seven and I doubt they’ll release you before then. Have a good night, rock star.”
“Goodnight, Mercy.”
