It felt like an icy chill came rolling in waves inside her body; one wave after another. No matter how much she tried getting rid of it, it would continue to roll. She let out a scream, but only found silence. It was also pitch black; she didn't know whether her eyes were open or not.
Caiomhe!
Ailis tried to scream louder, but still it was silent. Just like at the well, shouts had started to echo in her thoughts, much more bone-chilling than before.
RYAN! PLEASE SPARE HIM, I BEG OF YOU!
She felt warm tears erupt suddenly. The last shout caused her heart to ache with such a force. They wouldn't stop - the shouts - and each shout would only become much worse.
CAIOMHE, RUN!
Ailis began to sob. The shout had come from a man's voice and it sounded like he was also sobbing himself. Ailis tried to make a sound, as if it would make the situation less terrifying, but she was still silenced.
RYAN!
And just like that, Ailis could find that she could speak. And the next sound that escaped her lips were a heart-wrenching scream that mimicked the one echoed in her mind. It was as if she knew the voices.
"No, PLEASE! Everything will be fine!" Ailis found herself yelling, as if to reassure the woman's voice in her thoughts.
There were no more yelling; no more shouts. Ailis forced her eyes to close and her body suddenly became numb. She found herself wishing for the harsh, cold waves to come back. At least she was feeling something then.
----
Ailis opened her eyes to find a figure huddled over her.
"Ó, buíochas a ghabháil maitheas duit oscail do shúile, ní mór dúinn a cheap nach mbeadh tú tar éis.*" The figure said while walking over to sit down on the seat next to where Ailis was.
The figure was an elderly woman of about sixty years or so. The wrinkles on her face had shown Ailis that. Her hair was brown - but gray was suddenly becoming rather clear. It was her eyes that made Ailis believe she could trust this woman, regardless of the language she had spoken.
"Where am I? Why am I hurting?" Ailis blurted as she became aware of her body. Her bones were aching and she could instantly tell that her ankle was sprained.
"Ní féidir liom labhairt do theanga. Coinnigh ar, mo daor, beidh mé a fháil ar an aistritheora.**" The woman arose and walked out of the room, or tent, as Ailis had finally explored her surrounding.
She was on a cot in a darkened tent. She was outside, for the ground was covered in grass and dirt. It was a big tent, that also had a small, wooden table and a chest occupying it.
It only felt like minutes ago she was completely robbed of her senses, except only her ears. It had seemed they were working ten times more than usual, emphasizing every shout.
Ailis' eyes drifted off to the tent opening as the same woman walked in, this time with a younger woman. The younger woman had looked about Ailis age, give or take a few years. She had looked incredibly frightened, though.
"Where am I? Why am I hurt?" Ailis asked, hopeful that this new woman could understand her.
The younger woman looked Ailis in the eyes. "You do not know .. know where .. you came from?" She said in English, albeit broken.
Ailis almost breathed a sigh of pure relief. "No, I don't know. Can you tell me?"
The woman took a few seconds before saying, "You are in Ó Cathaláin clan. We have ... found you hurt in the forest. We do .. not know if .. another clan has in-.. injured you.
Ailis racked through her mind. She couldn't remember anything either Cliona or Clodagh have said about the Ó Cathaláin clan... was she still in the same time period?
"We .. recognize you to be Caiomhe of the Ó Ceallaigh clan... is that correct?" The woman said.
No! My name is Ailis!, she thought, but an instinctive state overcame her and she found herself nodding.
"I gcás Ryan***?" The words escaped from her mouth without her say. It had come out rather rushed and panicked.
The two women looked curiously at each other. This time, the elderly woman spoke. "Tháinig tú féin, beag amháin. Níl a fhios againn cad tá tú ag rá."
For some reason, Ailis had figured out what she said. A sudden rush of sadness overtook her.
----
Ryan bit his lip as he tried to stop the blood that was flowing from his leg.
It was a surprise and sudden attack. He concurred that there was a spy amongst his clan that had set it. His chest ached as he realized that they took no prisoners; the plan had been to kill them all. He hadn't cared if he had been hurt at all. The one thing that sprung on his mind was to get Caiomhe out of the clearing without sparking any interest.
He loathed himself, for he had led her right to an unsuspecting gypsy he had thought was loyal to him. The gypsy had begun to inflict terrible injuries in his Caiomhe. Ryan had barely managed to take the life of his 'friend' before Caiomhe had been stolen from him forever.
It was a rushed attack. He had found himself fighting, the years of experience coming to him automatically. He had lost Caiomhe though, with no sense or news that she was even alive.
Sobs begun to rack his body. She had to be alive. He couldn't think of anything that she had done in order for her death to appear so quickly. Suddenly, the piercing pain coming from his leg didn't matter anymore. He was deep in the forest now, with no other company.
He remembered the way he yelled for her to run, once more gypsies had appeared. She never did, however. Not until one of his own had took her hand and yelled that he would take her away from the scene. Ryan had not known if he was true to his word.
He crawled toward a huge tree. He would take a short sleep and let his leg heal before setting off. This was the forest - there were other gypsy clans scattered around, and he would set out to find one.
"RYAN! PLEASE SPARE HIM, I BEG OF YOU!"
The yell echoed in his mind and immediately caused his heart to pound. She had begged the gypsy that had been fighting Ryan to simply just let him go. She hadn't known that gypsy blood ran cold when they were fighting for their clan. It was no place for her to be.
He knew it would be an uneventful night, with her same plea echoing in his mind. Ryan forced himself to sleep. He would need all the energy in the next day to find a safe clan.
----
* Ó, buíochas a ghabháil maitheas duit oscail do shúile, ní mór dúinn a cheap nach mbeadh tú tar éis. - Oh, thank goodness you have opened your eyes, we have thought you wouldn't wake.
** Ní féidir liom labhairt do theanga. Coinnigh ar, mo daor, beidh mé a fháil ar an aistritheora. - I don't speak your language. Hold on, my dear, I will get a translator.
*** I gcás Ryan? - Where is Ryan?
**** Tháinig tú féin, beag amháin. Níl a fhios againn cad tá tú ag rá. - You came alone, little one. We do not know what you are saying.
