“Eejit! What’d you do that for??”, Prince Paul complained. Ryan had just ruined a perfectly good shot for his brother’s archery practice.
“I need to talk to you”, Ryan told him. Paul’s look was disbelieving. “You messed up my aim! It was perfect too!”
“Oh get over it”, Ryan rolled his eyes. Paul had always been the dramatic one of the family. “This is more important than archery practice.”
“Maybe to you”, Paul complained. “Can’t believe…”
“Where’s everyone else?”, Ryan interrupted. “I need to talk to you guys about something important”
Paul must have heard the desperation in his voice because he put down his bow and looked at him seriously. “What is it?”, he asked.
Ryan thought about how he wanted to word this. It was so complicated, none of his brothers even knew about Bridget. “It’s about my marriage”, he finally said. “Now where are the others?”
An hour later, Ryan was in his personal sitting room, with all his brothers around him.
“So, what’s up?”, Keith asked, taking off his heavy robe and making himself comfortable.
“It’s about me getting married”, Ryan said. “Dad got tired of waiting for me to chose my oen wife, so he chose one for me. But I can’t marry her.”
His brothers all stared at him for a second. “Why not?”, Damian finally asked.
“Yea, I mean, ya can’t wait forever Ryan”, Keith put in. “Is it really that hard to find a girl ye like?”
Ryan took a deep breath. “I already found a girl. I’ve loved her for 3 months and I never want to be a part from her. She’s the reason why I can’t marry Dad’s princess.”
“ But that’s great!”, Paul exclaimed. “Just marry her then. What’s the problem?”
“She’s a servant”
Silence.
“A servant?”, Damian asked. “Like, here in the castle?”
Ryan smiled a bit, thinking about her. “Yea”
More silence.
“Geez Ryan… what were ya thinkin’? A servant?”, Keith asked.
“How did you even meet her?”, Paul asked. “Or had a chance to get to know her?”
Ryan chuckled a bit, remembering how they met. That fateful night when she tripped, nearly breaking her ankle and spilling coal all over his floor. That was a night he would never forget. “She’s my chamber maid”, he told his confused brothers. “I got a chance to talk to her when she was preparing my rooms one night”
“And you love her?”, Paul asked.
“With all my heart”
“Does she love you?”, Keith wanted to know.
“For some reason, yes, she does”, Ryan smiled.
Paul cleared his throat. “Well, that’s all well and good for you, but what does it have to do with us?”
“Right”, Ryan remembered the reason why he was telling them this. “Dad made it very clear that I can’t marry anyone other than who he has picked out for me. And I can’t marry anyone other than Bridget, so we’re going to run away. We’re leaving.”
“Uhh… I think Da MIGHT notice you’re gone, Ryan”, Damian pointed out. “Then he’ll send out a search for you.”
Ryan rolled his eyes. “Thank you, Prince Obvious. That’s why Da’s not going to know that I’m running away.”
“Well, what else is he going to think when he finds you gone?”, Keith asked. “And when he finds you, it’s not going to go so well for yer girl”
“I already told you, he won’t come looking for me”, Ryan repeated. “He’s going to think I’m dead”
Silence again. Then a burst of arguments all at once.
“What?!”
“That’s crazy!”
“How are ye goin to do that?”
“You can’t”
“WHY would you do that?”
“Stupid eejit!”
Ryan held up his hands. “Hold on lads, let me explain. I’ve been thinking this through for a long time. There’s no other way.”
“How exactly were you thinkin of pulling this off?”, Paul asked.
Ryan explained his plan to them. It was slightly discomforting, planning his death. But if that’s what it took to keep Bridget with him, then he would do it gladly.
