Sharon, however, was not as easily fooled. When she saw the procession coming inside with the two of them in the lead, she groaned and muttered, “Boys; they will never change,” before leaving them standing there.
The rehearsals for the rest of the day were grueling, considering that Paul kept on forgetting his lines whenever he suddenly remembered a pair of emerald green eyes. At the end, Ryan rolled his eyes expertly and pulled him off to the side.
“Byrom, nice to see that you’ve got a new friend, but at least TRY to focus, okay?” Winking, he gave the tenor a light push back onstage.
As soon as he could escape the warehouse for the day, Paul called the number she had given him, smiling when he heard her voice.
“Hey, Mary, it’s Paul.”
“Why are you calling me now? Don’t you have work to do?” she asked.
Glancing at his watch, Paul saw that she was still at work, but there was nothing he could do after Sharon had told him to go rest for the rest of the day since he was half-asleep on his feet and completely out of it. “I did, but we stopped for tonight a little early. I was wondering…would you like to just, I don’t know, go somewhere tonight? If you don’t work too late, that is.”
There was a pause and a rustle of papers, and then she came back. “Paul, I would love to, but you need to rest as well. You’ve been on your feet a lot lately, and I don’t want to have you get in trouble because of me.”
“Oh, it’s no problem; I’m fine. So, what time?”
She laughed but agreed. “How about eight?”
“Sure, see you then,” Paul said, ending the call when she hung up, and limped over to where he could catch a cab back to his apartment.
