ok, i'm done with this story!!! The day of the funeral was dismal and dark, rain pouring down in buckets and turning the world into a dreary, gray mass with no difference between anything. There were only a few people there, just close friends and relatives, the latter was only Kathryn's brother. Afterwards, they headed back to their house, and Roger went into his room, shutting the door and leaving Paul standing there with Kathryn near that couch again. “I guess I should get going,” he said softly. “Unless you need me to stay.” “No, it’s alright, you can go. You’ve done so much already,” she replied, gently touching his arm. “Thank you.” “You’re smiling,” he commented, returning the tentative curve of her lips with one of his own. “No, no, keep it. It lightens the day, you know that?” Kathryn blushed, looking away and then walking out to the balcony. After a moment, he followed her outside, silently closing the door behind himself and leaning on the railing in a familiar gesture. “Kathryn…I was wondering…” he trailed off, not sure how to continue, and awkwardly glanced down at his hands. “Before you say something you’ll later regret, I…” she stopped, and he realized what she was trying to say was just as hard as what he was trying to get out as well. “Just friends?” he asked, keeping it as simple as possible, although he could not keep the rejection out of his voice. She nodded mutely, not meeting his eye. “Just friends.” They stood there side by side for the next few minutes, watching the people continue down below with their daily lives, not at all aware of what had happened just a few meters above. Just friends. THE END
