That had gone smoothly enough. The trading had. THIS was something Damian felt proud of more than anything. This was something not only the adults did, but was normally reserved for George, the leader. That he had done it, and not messed a single thing up… he felt almost as though he fit Keith’s clothes better as he came back to the main part of the village. He couldn’t help having thrown in one extra piece of conversation with the men of the trade ship. All of whom looked just as Paul had described. He wouldn’t have liked Deirdre alone near them either. Still he’d asked it. “Has there been news… any place you are trading with… of a girl? Having gone missing that is? Have you heard anything about anyone looking for her?” His face was a little redder, but he’d made it through the question alright. The shipmates all gathered for a brief moment. But all the answers were negative. He’d have to tell Haley he’d tried, later. This clearly drew away from the idea of her being nobility. Word of a kidnapped or missing young noble would have crossed from every city to tiny village within the first two days. He wondered about when and if she finally found out where she as from, who she was. What if one day she awoke remembering everything? Or she was discovered and, like Deirdre taken away. The idea was not too appealing. But Damian kept his fears at bay thinking about how she clearly loved it here. The return to the village did not bring about as much talk as Damian may have hoped. As he returned the Men had seemed to as well, and were all gathered decidedly around Deirdre. He thought of a dozen questions, and didn’t know which to begin with. “Um… wha-?” Deirdre laughed, “Damian! Oh you’re back just in time for the news!” She waved a letter in her hand and beamed. Very few letters came to and from the village, and most all were for Deirdre. And any for her meant one thing. “From the princess?” He asked stupidly. “Soon to be Queen!” She continued her delighted laughter, and looked to read the letter, “The Princess Julianne is getting married!”
“Who’s going with you?” Was the main question that followed that declaration. There was no guessing involved in knowing that Deirdre would surely be going to the Princess’s wedding. The only question now was if she was going alone. She was still beaming as though the smile would not fade from her lips, and answered. “Well I assumed I’d be taking Paul. But…” “No one else?” Ruth sounded disappointed. “Well I can’t very well take the whole village!” Paul chuckled, “Embarrassed to be seen with such low-born people?” He teased her. She shook her head, laughing, “Oh not I! However, imagine it; an entire village of commoners crashing her highness’s wedding! Julianne loves you all, but she’d be appalled!!” More laughter. “Well, none of the kids would go, obviously.” Joyce said. Carrie, George’s wife, nodded, “And I would stay with them.” “And I’d stay with you.” George said with an arm on his wife’s shoulder. She grinned. Neil shrugged, “I’ve been to court a few times, not too interesting for me. I’ll stay behind.” He sent a smile to his fiancée, “You can go though.” Joyce shook her head, “No, I’ll stay as well then.” Damian watched this all with a tiny smile on his face. He’d forgotten just how many couples had emerged from the village in the past few months. Deirdre laughed at this discussion, “Well, I guess I didn’t need to add that this would be safer in a small group as well. A group with more people would likely get raided by gypsies.” Ruth laughed a that, “Not if Keith was along.” True, he thought. Keith had been the one to help release the 4 captured gypsies earlier that year. He supposed that meant they liked him, at least enough not to harm him or his friends. Keith debated this and then shrugged, “If it makes ya feel safer I’d be willing to take a trip out to the Royal City. Ruth?” “Of course I’ll come!” She beamed. “So Deirdre and I, and you two… that’s it?” Paul clarified. Deirdre paused, then, “Damian?” He and Keith both said “What?” She ignored Keith, “You’ve never seen the Royal City, have you?” Ruth grinned, “Keith, you were about 18 when you first went too. I remember that.” “You came to the Royal City, Keith? And you never visited!?” Deirdre laughed. The two of them on Damian’s side, again, was enough for Keith to only roll his eyes. “I was joking. He can come, of course.” He punched Damian in the shoulder gently and both grinned at each other. “Haley should come too.” He added with a wink. He, of course, wasn’t opposed to that idea. Haley ought to see the Royal City. And, again, it may be another chance for some more clues to who she was to come out. She’d like that. “I could ask her.” He said simply. Deirdre, who adored Haley, seemed happy with this, “Yes, do!” Laughing, he left to do just that. She wasn’t in her home, and he’d seen her coming from the coast. That left one other Haley place. He made his way to the stables to find her softly brushing one of the horses, her favorite. She smiled a soft smile at him, but didn’t say anything. That smile was the kind he never believed genuine. She wasn’t happy, right then. “Princess Julianne is getting married.” He began simply, “Deirdre is inviting some of us to come with her to the wedding. Would you like to go? You’ll see the Royal City?” She paused, her smile fading a little. Obviously considering it, and also not as excited as Deirdre may have thought the young lady would be. Damian had expected a little more of an enthusiastic response, himself. “We- you could figure out- you could see if anyone may know you. It could help you figure more stuff out.” He added, quickly. Haley’s eyes widened a bit but she finally gave him an assuring and firm nod. ‘Yes, I’ll go.’ that look said. With that she set the brush aside to walk past him. In that moment something felt wrong. “Haley?” She turned, her eyes asking the question; ‘what?’ “Are you alright?” A distant smile and a shrug, ‘I’m fine.’ And she turned again, walking back into the small village without a word. Without a word. She could not be fine, Damian thought as what felt wrong finally caught up with him right then. Haley was no longer speaking to him.

So a few days later the small group of six people began the days ride to the Royal City. It was clear, and relatively warm for mid-autumn so the riding was easy and probably for the others, quite pleasant. Damian had never felt more agonized in his life. He rode beside Haley, only because everyone else was occupied with each other and he couldn’t help feeling out of place with them. She had been given one of Deirdre’s fancier gowns for riding, and would probably receive one more so for the wedding. While the clothes were even larger on her she looked absolutely stunning, but equally uncomfortable. He wanted to make some polite comment about that, but was unable to concentrate past the fact that she’d stopped speaking to him. Her silence had been awful enough when he’d thought she COULDN’T talk! Thinking that she had, and now wasn’t was unimaginable. That he couldn’t hear her quite whisper of a voice, never hold an actual conversation. And have no idea how she was faring any longer. He couldn’t handle that. “Haley.” He hissed to her as they lagged a little behind the others. She’d smiled at him throughout, clearly acting as though her silence was nothing. The smiled wasn’t there now, though. Damian knew she knew he was upset about all of this. ‘What?’ “What. Is. Wrong.” She shook her head quickly, trying a smile that may have fooled him before. Not now. ‘Nothing is wrong.’ “Then why aren’t you talking?” All attempts at smile faded. Haley’s eyes were wide and somewhat panicked and she glanced at the riders ahead. He knew he’d spoken too loudly, anyone could have heard that question. And no one else was supposed to know she’d ever spoken. She pursed her lips in a silent ‘Shhh!’ “I am not going to be quiet until you’re honest Hales.” He whispered to her, stubbornly. Panic gave way to irritation in her deep eyes and her lips tightened. “Haley, please. Tell me what’s wrong? I told you I’d be here for you. Just tell me what’s happened.” He had hoped to mollify her, but she glared. Those stunning black eyes were quite unnerving when they weren’t happy. He’d never had to deal with that before. He hoped right then he’d never have to deal with it again “Haley?” “You also told me if what I’d been through kept me silent you would never force me to speak about it.” She hissed furiously. Damian nearly stopped his horse, “What? You remembered something?” Wrong thing to say, as it caught up with him what she had angrily slipped out. So she’d remembered something, but didn’t want to talk about it. How could he make her? He HAD told her that he wouldn’t make her talk about whatever had happened. That, however, had been when he thought she’d known about it. Now that he had become so very worried about who she was he wasn’t sure he could keep that promise. But if it helped Haley… he could cope. But he didn’t have time to apologize for that particular mistake. She sucked in her breath in anger at his words and kicked her horse forward riding ahead of him. She settled her gait beside Deirdre and he saw her give the confused woman her smile attempt. Which, of course, fooled her. It was torture, seeing her up there. Damian so longed to drag her away and apologize for not thinking. At the same time he wanted to ask her so much about what she had remembered, about what had left her scared speechless. But he could not do that. He could never do that. Especially now with Deirdre by her side. So in a silence of his own, he sat back and let the ride to the Royal City continue. Knowing it was not going to be the most enjoyable experience.
It was surprising to discover he wasn’t the only one who knew Haley was not herself. As they pulled at last into the stunning and bustling city Ruth fell into step next to him. He knew he probably seemed sulky and was prepared to be questioned about it. But the question surprised him. “Is Haley alright?” He blinked. He’d been wondering the same thing. “I- I think she’s fine.” He lied, “Why?” She shrugged, seeming to suddenly second guess it herself, “Well, she is always so happy around you, I guess I am surprised she left your presence for Deirdre. Though I mean she likes Deirdre too. Who doesn’t? But I was just, you know – if anyone knew she was unhappy you would.” “I don’t know, but I think she is alright. Hard to tell with her, you know?” “I do.” She smiled, “You should talk to her though, if she’s upset you’ll surely help her.” “I think she’s mad at me.” The words slipped out. Ruth cocked her head a bit to the side, looking at him, “Mad at you? I can hardly imagine that. But if she is just apologize, she surely can’t remain so.” Damian shrugged, “I don’t know, but I can try.” He certainly wanted to try. Haley furious at him was not a pleasant. He worked in his mind what on earth he could say in apology. He had been stupid, he hadn’t thought. He was sorry and if she never spoke to him again he’d be alright with that. But he could never be alright knowing that he had angered her. But when on earth could he get a time to apologize to her? Would he have to wait until this whole ordeal was done and they were back home? He didn’t believe he could wait. He wasn’t sure when the wedding was to be, or what they would be doing in their spare time. But Deirdre answered that all fairly quickly. “The wedding is tonight, luckily enough we’re in time. So I’ll show you all to where you can get ready for it, I’ll be speaking with Julianne.” She beamed, “If you are done early enough, which I doubt, you can wait in the hall or on the balcony behind. It’s hard to miss.” Agreeing, she then showed them where they were to get ready.
Getting ready was far more elaborate than Damian had anticipated. He supposed it was a royal wedding, and while he was far from, he’d have to be dressed like some kind of noble as well. But it still shocked him to see the clothing lined up for him to wear… And he’d thought KEITH’S clothes were nice! He distantly wondered what Haley would be clothed in. Unlike Deirdre had thought, he did get ready fairly quickly and realized there was still an hour left. Wanting to wait for another person he knew, but unsure of where TO wait, he made it uncomfortably to the hall where this wedding was to be held. The castle was remarkable enough already. But the hall, before a celebration was nearly breathtaking. Ribbons of the Royal colors were streamed everywhere along side the colors of a flag he didn’t know. Most likely that of the lord fiancé of Princess Julianne. Awkwardly, he didn’t make eye contact with anyone who was already in the room. He may have looked noble but he was certain anyone there could tell he was not. With that he found the back of hall was indeed a balcony looking out into the night. For it being a lovely temperature, no one else was outdoors, so Damian happily basked in the silence while he could. He didn’t really know how long he’d stood there but footsteps distracted him. He turned to face Haley. Her expression equally uncomfortable. The pale pink dress on her, heavily embroidered, was positively gorgeous, but still slightly large and he could see the places it had been pinned back to fit her better. He wondered if he may ever see the girl in something that fit her truly. “Haley-“ He was ready to begin the apology. “I’m sorry.” “I’m sorry.” “I should have known that-“ “I should have thought before I-“ He cut off with her and they both took a breath. She sighed and gestured for him to speak. Taking another breath, he did. “I wasn’t thinking, Hales. Of course you shouldn’t be forced to speak. I was just- I was worried about you, but that isn’t really an excuse. So, I’m sorry.” Haley shook her head and continued in the quiet whisper of a voice, “No, I shouldn’t have gotten so angry. I knew you were only trying to help me and that I should be grateful – I don’t know, I don’t know what made me so upset.” Damian smiled, “You’re stressed; you can’t be expected to have a clear head. I wasn’t making it any easier if you remembered something that upset you.” “I did.” She whispered, “And I know this is going to sound so, so petty after how I treated you earlier… but I- I need-“ “You want me to listen?” A hesitant smile cracked her embarrassed face, “Please.” He settled his back against the balcony and grinned, “Surely. What did you remember, Hales?” She stepped closer, leaning her side on the balcony as well, and glanced at the party indoors. No one would disrupt them. After a long silence she took a began. “When I came back from the coast that day the ship came in, I came back to Deirdre talking to Ruth and Joyce. I only caught a bit of the conversation but it was enough to – It made me- I remembered a little from the night you found me.” Damian was silent, not about to probe into this any further than she wanted to go. But curiosity was getting the best of him there. “Yes?” Her voice wasn’t steady anymore, “I remember… someone… another girl, maybe near my age. I don’t remember if we- we knew each other… or were close. But we were… we- something happened… and one of us… or both of us… we had to run.” She stopped and shuddered, “I remember I- I hit my head while running, and I- I lost sight of her. I-I don’t know how… and I don’t know what happened and… I know I know more b-but now I feel I don’t know anything.” She had begun to shake and was looking decidedly at the ground between them. He stared at her, trying to work out everything that had just been told to him. He couldn’t imagine it. He could, however, see why she didn’t want to talk about it. Everything confused her, everything worried her, and that she was now getting random clips and memories that terrified her. He put a hand gently on her shoulder. She glanced up at him, and he was amazed she was not in tears, even after all of that. “I’m sorry I made you tell me that.” He said gently, “I can understand you not wanting to think about it…” Haley smiled, “No, I needed to talk about it, I think. Thank you for – for always being there. I’m glad my moods haven’t scared you off.” He laughed awkwardly, “Hales, you’re never gonna scare me away. Face it, you’re stuck with me.” He put his hand on her other shoulder and pulled her into a little hug. She stiffened a little at that, and pulled away. He let her, he’d only meant for it to be comforting, of course. She stared up at him for a moment, her face unreadable, and black eyes shining even in the night. The few seconds he looked at her there felt like an eternity and suddenly the quite night was pierced by the sound of trumpets blaring from inside the hall. Haley broke the stare between them and looked inside. “I t-think the wedding is starting.” She stated awkwardly. Damian realized he had momentarily forgotten all obligations of that night, and blushed. “I guess we should head in then?” A nod for that, and then, “Thank you Damian, why are you always so sweet to me?” He shrugged, “You don’t deserve any of this, I want to help you…” He took a breath, “And, well, I just like you. I like being around you.” Haley sighed a little, “I love being around you too.” And then she mumbled something in audible for him, but before he could ask she smiled and moved in for the wedding.
