My first attempt at a story! Hope you enjoy it!
------------ Annie Donaldson sat staring out her bedroom window as her maid braided her long blonde hair, and pinned it up in an intricate fashion. She wore her best dress; a red velvet gown complete with gold trim and jewels. Today was a very important day, for her father, the king, was making an appearance in the village. Annie and her two younger sisters were to attend the event, in order to show off her family and their wealth. Annie’s mother, the queen, was killed a few years back by some of her husband’s enemies. King George had his fair share of enemies; however, he was a very powerful ruler. The crisp morning air made Annie shiver as they walked to their carriage. The unpleasant smells of the local village wafted into Annie’s nose, causing her to sneeze. The ride for the most part was uneventful. It was still early, so Annie closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep. Annie awoke in a daze not knowing where she was. She quickly sat up and found that she was no longer in the carriage, but in the forest. Annie suddenly became very frightened. Where were her sisters? Where was the king? Or more importantly, her father? Annie frantically got to her feet and looked around. She heard a faint noise off in the distance. Curiously, Annie wandered in the direction of the sounds. As she got closer, she could hear a man’s voice. She kept walking until she was able to make out a figure who was turned away from her. She cautiously inched closer, and was able to hear him more clearly. The man was singing! His voice was so pure and rich with sounds that it sent chills through Annie’s body. Annie was no longer afraid, but awed. Who was this man with the voice of an angel?
Annie sat down in the leaves, mesmerized. After a minute of so, the man stopped singing. “That was beautiful” Annie said almost in a whisper. The man whirled around suddenly, oblivious to Annie’s presence. “M’lady ,” He said, “I did not know you had woken.” “Where’s my family? And who are you?” Annie questioned. “My name is Neil. I’m a blacksmith in the village.” “What are you doing out in the forest?” Annie asked. “I trade with people from lots of other towns. Traveling is a big part of my life. These woods are basically a second home for me.” “And my family?” Annie asked again. “Unfortunately, I do not know where they are. I came upon the attack and I only found you.” Neil explained. “Attack? What happened?” Annie suddenly got scared again.” ”You better sit down, m’lady.” Annie slowly kneeled on the ground as Neil told her what happened. “I was on my normal trade route coming home, when I heard screams. I quickly rode in the direction of the cries and saw the Dark Destroyer and his clan of gypsies burning the royal carriage. Two of them were tying up King George, your father, and carried him to their caravan. I presume that your sisters were already captured. I proceeded on foot, and snuck over behind one of the gypsies and stabbed him. “ Annie glanced down and noticed Neil’s blood-stained sword hanging from his belt. Neil continued, “The Dark Destroyer saw me, and fled; gypsy caravan, and all. I would have chased after them, but I saw you lying unconscious on the ground. You must have been hit on the head.” At that comment, Annie touched the left side of her head and felt a throbbing pain. Neil went on, “So I picked you up and carried you back here.” Annie had a whirlwind of emotions rushing through her, and could not speak. “What am I to do?” She finally whispered. Tears were forming in her eyes. Neil got down on one knee right in front of her, and put his hand on her arm. “You go after the Dark Destroyer.” “How?” Annie wiped a tear that was running down her cheek. “You are the eldest daughter of the King. You’re in charge now. You have people who will do anything you ask and go anywhere with you. Even if that means going to the edge of the world to find your family.” Neil said gently. Annie sat thinking about the idea. Could she really go off on a quest for her father and sisters? But she had no idea where to go, let alone, where to start. Her fear had vanished, and now there was a strange longing for adventure in the pit of her stomach. She looked up at Neil, who was staring intently at her. “I’ll do it.” Annie’s voice quivered slightly. Neil got a little smile on his face. “On one condition.” She continued. “You go with me.” Neil was taken aback. “But I am merely a blacksmith, not a knight. I am not worthy of such a task.” “But you are!” Annie said truthfully. “You said it yourself that you travel these lands, surely you know them by heart. And you confronted the Dark Destroyer which shows your bravery. Will you help find my family?” Neil thought for a moment but could not resist the look in Annie’s beautiful, dark brown eyes. “I am at your service madam.” Neil said standing up. He extended his hand down and helped Annie to her feet. “Thank you!” Annie was almost jumping up and down. “I’m sure my father will thank you as well.” “Anything for you, m’lady.” Neil said with a slight bow. “And one more thing.” Annie said. “What’s that?” Neil asked. “Call me Annie.” “As you wish, Annie.” Neil said with a smile. “We shall leave tomorrow then!” Annie said. “May I offer you a ride back to your castle? Neil asked while mounting his horse. “You may.” Annie said grinning. Neil took Annie’s hand and hoisted her up so she was sitting behind him. She wrapped her arms tightly around Neil’s firm stomach. “Hold on tight.” Neil said with a wink and kicked the flanks of his horse. Annie let out a small squeal of excitement as the horse took off at full speed. ---------------

------------------- King George sat slumped in a corner in the back of the caravan as it rattled and bounced along the bumpy path. His two daughters sat tied up at the opposite side, both looking terrified. “Do not worry my children. They will not harm us. We will be safe.” George tried reassuring his daughters. “How do you know, father?” “Because I am the king, and they will not harm the royal family. If they do, they will be killed, and they know it.” George did not believe what he said, at least not completely. He knew most criminals would never touch the king, but the Dark Destroyer was no ordinary criminal. He was worse. The caravan came to a sudden stop and within moments the back was opened. A dark figure stood in front of the three prisoners as the bright afternoon sunlight flowed in around him. He let out a malicious laugh that sent chills through everyone’s body. “Welcome to the Pleasure Dome!” He yelled with his arms stretched outwards. George squinted his eyes and saw blurry figures moving around off in the distance. As his eyes adjusted, he could see more clearly what the figures were. Gypsy caravans. Lots of them. It must have been their secret hideout. George’s thoughts were interrupted by the Dark Destroyer. “You are in the Dark Destroyer’s territory now!” He yelled again. He had somewhat of a coarse voice, one George had never heard before. He then motioned to a fellow gypsy to grab one of the daughters. As he yanked her out of the caravan, the Dark Destroyer stopped her. “Now what might your name be?” he asked with a little smirk. The young girl was staring at the ground. “Ruth” she said softly. “Ruth, Ruth, Ruth,” The Dark Destroyer said shaking his head. “Are you frightened by me?” He leaned down towards her so he was only a couple inches away from her face. Ruth could smell a mixture of sweat and smoke wafting off of him. She tried not to breathe and said nothing. “Too scared to speak” laughed one of the gypsies. “Indeed.” The Dark Destroyer stood upright and slightly backed away from the young girl. Ruth could finally take a deep breath. “Well Ruth, you better be scared of me. I am a dangerous and powerful man.” The Dark Destroyer crossed his arms and had a proud look on his face. “Not as powerful as my father.” Ruth’s voice quivered as she looked up into the Dark Destroyer’s eyes. They were a light blue, but something about them was very cold and dark. She could see all the years of terrorizing and killing in his eyes, devoid of all romance and remorse. She felt as if he was looking into her soul, and was forced to glance away quickly. The Dark Destroyer’s expression quickly changed for the worst. His little smirk vanished and he uncrossed his arms as he moved towards her again. “What, did you say?” He asked in a low, cold voice that could freeze fire. Ruth was shaking, and could not respond. “That’s what I thought.” The Dark Destroyer said with the same tone of voice. “Take her to the cave. Take all of them. They cannot be rescued there.” As one of the gypsies grabbed the other daughter, the Dark Destroyer stopped her just as he had done before. “Now you’re a pretty one. What do they call you?” A crooked smile was wiped across his face. “Joyce.” She said confidently. “Well Joyce, you look to be the older of the two. What’s your age?” The Dark Destroyer was surely enjoying taunting the two girls. “22 years” She said coldly. “Ah, a grand age. Tell me Joyce, have you ever encountered a gypsy before? Do you know what they are capable of?” She shook her head, although it was barely noticeable. “You’re in for a real treat then! I hope you enjoy your new home here! It’ll be great fun!” He winked at her then motioned for another gypsy to take her away. With that he cocked his head backwards and let out another evil laugh until finally the king was brought out. “Well, well, well. Look at what we have here! A king? All dressed up and no where to go! Not so powerful now are ye? Your daughters are very nice—“ “If you so lay a hand on one of my girls, I promise you will not live another day!” The king bellowed. He could now see the Dark Destroyed clearly in the light. He was not a tall man, unlike how everyone described him. In fact, the king was taller. How could he be controlled and ordered around by this man? His black tangled hair matched his black clothes and jacket. For all the burning and killing the Dark Destroyer did, he was rather clean. “We’ll see about that” The Dark Destroyer whispered in the King’s ear and walked away, leaving his presence lingering over the King. ---------------

New post!! Yay! Thanks everyone! Enjoy!
------------ Neil woke with a warm ray of sunlight streaming through the little square window in the room. He sighed and rolled onto his back, still with his eyes closed. A moment passes until the memories of the previous afternoon flooded into his mind. His eyes shot open, not even taking the time to adjust to the bright daylight. “Am I really going to do this?” he said quietly to himself. “Do what?” Neil’s adopted younger brother Damian was standing in the doorway, already wide awake. He was wearing a gray tunic and trousers which were both very worn and ripped. Damian was also Neil’s apprentice learning to be a blacksmith. His hands and face were covered in black soot, and his short dark hair stood up in every direction. “Hmm? Oh nothing.” Neil slowly got to his feet as his dreams from the night faded away. “You don’t act like it’s nothing” Damian said as he entered the room completely. “Well…” Neil hesitated, unsure if he wanted to tell Damian what happened. “I met the King’s daughter yesterday.” Neil said at last. Damian gasped, “You did?! Which one?” His deep blue eyes were wide open and staring at Neil with great interest. “The eldest, Anne. Well, Annie. She goes by Annie.” Neil could feel his heartbeat get slightly faster as he talked about her. “Where did you meet her? Is she really as pretty in person as everyone says she is? Was the king there? Does he request a sword?” Damian’s mouth was racing and Neil could hardly understand all the questions that were shot at him. “Whoa, Damo, slow down! Long story short, I was returning home yesterday when I came upon the Dark Destroyer and his clan of gypsies burning the royal carriage. They kidnapped the King and the two younger daughters, but I was able to rescue Annie before they took her as well. And she is more beautiful in person than anyone can imagine. Her eyes are so dark, yet kind and caring; and the way her long blonde hair glistens in the sunlight…it’s magical.” Neil trailed off as thoughts of Annie captured his mind. Damian was speechless. For a moment he was living vicariously through Neil’s descriptions and the room was silent for a few moments. “You-you rescued her?” Damian said as his jaw dropped. “Well what was I supposed to do? Leave her there?” Neil smacked Damian playfully on the side of his head as he walked past him out of the room. “Neily, I’m so proud of you!” Damian said grinning. “Oh shut up. And don’t call me Neily.” Neil began to pack an extra set of clothes, and some food items in a bag. He picked up his brown vest that was lying in a heap on the floor, and slipped it over his loose, cream colored tunic. He grabbed his belt and wrapped it around his waist, fastening it in the front. “Where are my boots?” Neil asked scanning the floor. “They’re by the door. Where they always are.” Damian said rolling his eyes. Neil fastened on his black, worn- out boots and slipped his handmade sword into his belt. “Where are you going?” Damian remained where he was with a confused look on his face. “I….um…Annie and I are going after the Dark Destroyer. To find her family.” Neil swung the bag over his head and let the strap rest across his chest. “And I’m coming with.” Damian said proudly without even thinking. Neil stopped in his tracks and whirled around to face Damian. “No you’re not. I forbid it.” “Why?” Damian pleaded. “I’ve always wanted to go on a quest! Please?” “Damo, you’re only seventeen years of age. It is not safe.” “Well, who will watch over me during your travels? I get so lonely when you’re away.” Damian knew his plan would work; it always has. No one could resist the puppy-dog look in his eyes, not even Neil. Damian’s parents abandoned him when he was a small child, so Neil’s family took him in. As Damian got older, Neil treated him like his only brother, by caring for him and protecting him. Neil knew he was trapped. Damian always used this against him. “I really need to find a response to that, don’t I?” Neil said defeated. “Nope, works every time.” Damian said triumphantly. He grabbed a pack just like Neil’s and began stuffing what few belongings he had into it. He had no belt, which meant no sword. Plus, Neil would never let Damian have a sword until he was fully trained. Instead, Damian was only allowed a little dagger, which he strapped around his ankle. “Why are WE going to save the King? Aren’t there knights that do this sort of stuff?” Damian had to ask. “There are indeed, but Annie asked me to go with her. She wanted ME to do her a personal favor. I could not deny the request. Besides, the fewer people who know about this the better.” “But you’ve told SOMEONE, right?” “It’s all taken care of Damo, do not worry.” Neil and Annie had planned everything on their ride back to the castle the previous day. Annie had devised a plan that would cover until they returned. If they returned. Neil hadn’t thought of that. What if they don’t return? He suddenly became aware of all the dangers of the quest. But he pushed those thoughts aside and turned to Damian. “Before we leave, you must promise me this,” Neil began. “Do not do anything stupid.” Damian snickered until he realized Neil was serious. “Do not wander off on your own either. It’s very dangerous out there. Let me do the fighting; I cannot risk your life. And most importantly, if you hear singing, do not go near it!” Neil made sure this was drilled into Damian’s head. “What’s wrong with singing? You sing all the time.” Damian questioned. “Just stay away from it, do you hear me?” “Okay I won’t.” Damian dropped the conversation. He slung his pack across his body like Neil, and the two departed on their quest for the royal family. ----------------

New update!! The entire section was too long, so I split it up here. Not a very long post though. The one after this is somewhat of the same nature, just so ya know.
-------------------- Annie skipped into the courtyard of the castle after her ride home with Neil. Her long, wavy blonde hair bounced up and down, a split second slower than the rest of her body. A rush of different emotions flowed through her; some Annie had never felt before. She continued skipping down the dirt road under the giant trees which towered over her. She passed through the iron gate and as she closed the latch, she began to wonder if Neil had made the gate. He was in fact, one of two blacksmiths in the village, and certainly the most talented. The thought pleased Annie as she stood momentarily staring at the barrier which separated the road and garden. Her thoughts were suddenly interrupted by a soft whistling off in the distance. Annie’s smile vanished as she searched for a place to hide. She ran around frantically looking for a tall bush or tree to take refuge behind, but the garden consisted of only short plants and hedges. Desperately, Annie walked hastily in the opposite direction of the whistling. “Annie?” A voice called. Annie sighed and turned around. “Yes Paul?” She responded without even a hint of enthusiasm in her voice. She was so close to the castle door, if only she ran… Prince Paul hastened toward Annie setting a quick pace, and Annie could hear the swoosh of his black trousers as he walked. His open white tunic lay loosely over his broad shoulders, and allowed Annie to see the majority of his somewhat perspiring chest. Prince Paul was the man whom Annie was to marry. He was the prince, she was the princess, and their marriage had been arranged since the two were little children. But Annie did not want to marry Prince Paul. She did not love him. He was too….too prince-y for her. The more Annie thought about it, she didn’t even want to be the princess, or the future queen. “Where have you been today? I have not seen you around the castle. I got worried.” Paul said as he closed the gap between himself and Annie with a kiss on her cheek. Annie winced slightly, and wanted to run away from Paul; run away from the castle, the village, everything. Maybe even run to Neil. But she remained where she was. “Oh Paul, you worry too much. I was in the village, if you must know. Getting materials for my painting.” Annie lied in order to avoid a long discussion about what truly happened. She really HAD gone into the village for new brushes, but that was a few days ago. Luckily Paul didn’t know about that trip, so he believed Annie’s story. “Which reminds me,” Annie began as she turned and walked towards the castle door. “I must rest. I have another outing tomorrow. A longer one. Good day Paul.” Prince Paul grabbed her by the arm and swung her around so she was facing him. “May I ask why you aren’t talking to me often?” Paul had a look of hurt in his eyes. “I just want to keep you safe, Annie dearest.” He slid his hand down Annie’s arm and grasped her hand gently in his. His soft tone made Annie regret walking away from him. She knew he loved her, and the more she thought about it, the more she came to like it. She did care for Prince Paul, but she did not love him. He was a good friend, one Annie could always count on. Annie took Paul’s other hand in hers, and looked compassionately into his eyes. “I know you love me, Paul. And I’m sorry if I may seem distant. But I need you to trust me; I can take care of myself. And that one time I can’t, I know you will be there to help me.” She let go of his hands and wrapped her arms around his neck. “Just be careful” Paul whispered into Annie’s ear. The two stood there, locked in the moment of the sweet embrace, silhouetted as one figure by the setting sun. -------------
Alright I'm not dissing Paul here. No hard feelings towards him. Just getting his character set up, and how Annie feels about him. Yay! PMB! ♥

New post!! Kinda the second part of the previous one. :DDD
------------------ Prince Paul let Annie retreat to her bed chamber where she began to pack some of her belongings into a little sack. She had hardly removed all her jewelry when a knock came from the door. “Yes?” Annie called, not even looking away from her reflection in the mirror. Annie’s maid entered the room, carrying a pot of tea, and set it down on Annie’s bed- side table. She turned back around as if to leave the room when Annie stopped her. “Nicole” Annie began. “Come. I have something to tell you.” Nicole shuffled over towards Annie. “What is it, Annie?” she asked. “I have a favor to ask of you.” Annie began. “But you mustn’t tell anyone, do you understand.” Annie’s voice was quiet, but not a whisper. “Of course, dear. What is it?” Annie told Nicole the whole story of when she fell asleep in the carriage, to when she awoke listening to Neil’s beautiful voice in the forest. She told the same account that Neil told her, about the Dark Destroyer, the clan of gypsies, how her father and sisters were kidnapped, and how Neil saved her. “And so I rode back here with Neil on his horse.” Annie finished. She took a deep breath, for she did not realize that she was shaking with anxiety. Nicole was speechless, and her gaping mouth hung down. “So what will you do?” She finally managed to say. “I’m going after the Dark Destroyer.” Annie said finally in a whisper. The two were alone in her room, but for some reason Annie felt the need to be secretive. “But surely you are not traveling alone?! Is Prince Paul going with you?” Nicole was very worried. She had heard stories about the Dark Destroyer; bad ones. Tales of women lured in by him and his clan, killing and burning of villages, prisoners who never escape—she couldn’t bear the thought of losing Annie. “No, he’s not going with me. He does not know of my quest. And do not tell him, Nicole!” “But Annie, he’s your future husband, the prince—“ “Prince or not, he mustn’t know! He will worry too much! Besides, the less people who know of the situation, the safer I will be.” Annie knew that Paul would worry himself sick. He would try and go with her for sure. Annie could not risk that. And how would Neil react if she told him she was engaged to another man; a prince, as it were. Just the thought made Annie nauseous. “Neil is accompanying me.” She continued. “He knows the lands very well, and can find the Dark Destroyer’s hideou—“ “Neil? The blacksmith? But Annie, he is not a knight! Surely a man of his status cannot protect—“ “A man of his status?! Do not speak of him that way, Nicole! You do not even know him! He is a strong swordsman who knows how to fight, and I will gladly put my life in his hands!” Annie was fuming. She did not like yelling at her closest friend. The two girls had grown up together, living as neighbors before Annie moved to the castle. Nicole was no princess, or royalty for that matter. But Annie made sure that Nicole was accommodated in the castle, and assigned as Annie’s maid. They shared secrets and thoughts about Princes, all in privacy. Annie was told many times that she and Nicole were forbidden to speak, for Nicole was merely a peasant. But the two formed a sisterly bond that could not be broken by the King’s demands. “I beg your pardon, miss. I did not know you had such feelings for him.” Nicole said softly. Annie’s face turned a light shade of red. She really needed to watch what she said. “I-I don’t.” Annie stuttered. “It’s just….it’s difficult to say.” Mmhmm.” Nicole could see through Annie’s lies. She stared at Annie for a moment with one eyebrow raised, waiting for Annie to cave. “After all these years of our friendship, you think I don’t know when you like a man? I can see it in your eyes, Annie.” “It is forbidden. He is as you said, ‘not a knight’ or a prince. It’s only a dream, Nicole; it could never happen. The reality of this is that I am to marry Prince Paul and rule over these lands. That is my destiny.” Annie’s mood was sorrowful as she pictured her life with Prince Paul. He would be around her constantly, making sure she was satisfied. Then in the evenings he would read to her, since he loved to read. Annie was bored just thinking about it. And his singing! The man was constantly singing! She would be able to hear his unique and profound voice throughout the entire castle! “Oh god…” Annie mumbled to herself. She could imagine Paul strutting around the castle in the finest of clothes with his hair slicked back. Annie did not want to be stuck in the same routine each day. “What if your destiny is to be with Neil?” Nicole asked. “Don’t be silly, Nicole.” Annie continued packing the last of her belongings into the sack. “Well I must tell someone about your absence! How will I explain where the entire royal family has gone? To the village? Surely no one will believe that. And what happens if you’re away for days?” Nicole began to panic. Annie had never been away for a long period of time. “And what am I to do without you?” “You could keep Paul company.” Annie said with a little smirk on her face. “Oh, I can’t wait” Nicole said sarcastically. She had never really spent time with the prince. Never really talked to him either. Maybe it wouldn’t be too bad. He WAS the most handsome prince she’d ever seen. “Oh! I have an idea!” Annie’s face lit up as she grabbed Nicole’s arm and led her out of her room. “Where are we going?” Nicole managed to say through a laugh. “To Master Phil.” Master Phil was the most respected elder in the entire village. He had always worked for King George, and was a great family friend. Phil was very wise and full of experiences. Annie had heard lots of stories of his life, but knew not if they were true. She had always wanted to ask, though. “Master Phil will know what to do.” Annie continued. “Everyone trusts him. He’s perfect.” Annie and Nicole told Master Phil everything that happened. He remained calm and basically unresponsive until they had finished. “I will handle this.” He finally said. “You two must not worry, I shall not speak a word of this to anyone. And Annie,” he turned to face her. “Be careful out there, m’dear. The forest has unfathomable depths consisting of lurking creatures. I have experienced it. Do not get separated from Neil at any cost. I cannot bear to lose you.” Phil explained seriously. Annie made sure to remember everything Phil said. He was, of course, all-knowing. Annie said her “Goodnights” and returned to her room. She lay restlessly in her bed thinking about her upcoming adventures before finally drifting off into a deep sleep. ----------------
Okay, the plot is actually gonna start after this! Just had to get the introductions out of the way. Yay!

Hooray! New post! This is probably my favorite section so far.... :DDDD
-------------- Annie opened her eyes to a ray of light seeping in through her bedroom window. She lay in her bed thinking about the day in front of her before sitting upright. A smile inched its way across her face as she thought of Neil. She was able to go on an adventure alone with Neil! No one would object to it seeing as no one would know. She would finally get away from Prince Paul for a while. She hastily threw back the bed sheets, eager to get dressed for the day. As she slipped on her silk bathrobe, Annie walked over to the window. It was a rather cloudy day, and a light fog covered the vast garden below. Something didn’t seem right-- Annie had a peculiar feeling growing in the pit of her stomach. Her thoughts of Neil had disappeared, and now she stood confused. There were no sounds of animals, and Annie didn’t see any of the servants working out in the garden. Where was everyone? Nicole suddenly busted into the room looking panicked and out of breath. Her long dark hair was tangled due to all the running, and her eyes were wide with worry. “Annie! Come quick!” She turned and ran out of the room just as fast as she had entered. Annie ran after Nicole as she ran down the spiral stairs and through the great hall. Annie noticed that there wasn’t anyone else in the castle as they ran through it. The great hall was usually packed with people coming and going, and lively with soft chatter. Now it was silent. The sound of Annie’s footsteps echoed throughout the grand entry way, making a constant rhythm on the marble floor. “Where are you taking me, Nicole?” Annie said in between breaths. She did not have to yell for her voice traveled easily through the empty corridor. Nicole gave no answer, only the sounds of her heavy breathing. She slowed slightly and pushed open the two giant doors that led outside. The loud creaking of each door made Annie wince as she grew nearer. Nicole sped up again, and ran out through the garden until she reached the iron gate that led to the road. She unlatched the gate, and hurried through it, allowing Annie to catch up to her. Nicole led Annie down the dirt road, then veered off to the left into the heavy brush of the forest. Annie fought through the thick foliage, completely unaware of her shredding bathrobe. They finally reached a clearing in the trees, and Nicole slowed her pace to a brisk walk. Annie did the same and brushed away the perspiration that was forming on her forehead. She tried to slow her breathing down to a normal speed, but had no luck. “Nicole, where are—“ Annie followed Nicole’s gaze and saw two figures further off in the clearing. She squinted her eyes and was able to see that one of the figures was standing and the other kneeling. Curiously, Annie walked closer. As her vision became clearer, she was able to see that the person standing was Prince Paul. She could recognize his perfectly-done hair a mile away. But what was he doing all the way out here? Surely the prince did not venture into the forests. And who was the other person with him? Annie kept walking and noticed the fog was slowing moving into the forest. It was an eerie setting, and the peculiar feeling in her stomach returned. Finally she was able to see clearly, and what Annie saw, stopped her dead in her tracks. “Paul, no!” Annie cried, trying to run forward but her feet were locked where they were. She screamed his name again, but was unable to move. Her mind was racing, telling her feet to get off the ground, but nothing was working. The fog seemed to overtake the clearing in the forest, and Annie was slowly losing sight of the two figures. She looked back over her shoulder to yell for Nicole, but Nicole was no where to be found. Where had she gone? Annie was shaking nervously as she turned back around to the sight in front of her. “Please don’t, Paul! Please!” Annie cried out again. Still unable to move her feet, Annie fell to the ground. A tear slid down her check and disappeared into the grass. Annie tried to yell to Paul again, but no words came. Her mouth was open, but no words or sounds escaped. She put her face in her hands and started sobbing. What was happening? She couldn’t bear to look at Paul again. Prince Paul was standing over Neil who was kneeling on the ground. Paul had his sword drawn, with the blade at Neil’s throat. Neil was paralyzed with fear as he looked up into the hatred in Paul’s eyes. Neither man moved. They seemed like statues surrounded by the thick fog. “How dare you set foot on these grounds, Blacksmith!” Paul finally yelled angrily. “Come to steal my future bride, have you now? Well, I will make sure that never happens!” Prince Paul slowly raised his sword above his head. Neil knew what was coming. Nothing could save him now. He closed his eyes tightly, preparing for what came next. Annie glanced up at the last minute to see Paul’s sword through the fog. She let out a deafening scream, one that could be heard by every living soul for miles around. She watched as if it was in slow motion— Paul brought his sword down slicing the air and— Annie sat straight up in her bed screaming. Nicole rushed in looking concerned, and sat next to Annie on the side of her bed. “Annie, are you alright?” Nicole placed her hand on Annie’s arm. All the sheets on the bed were in a heap on the floor, and Annie was sweating. “What happened? Annie, breathe!” Nicole tried to help Annie slow her breathing to a normal rhythm, and wiped away the sweat from Annie’s forehead with a cloth. “It was just a dream” Annie said hardly audible. “A dream…” she repeated slowly as she calmed down. “It must have been a nightmare,” Nicole mentioned. “You’re shaking.” “Oh Nicole, it was so real! I was certain it really happened!” “What happened, Annie?” Nicole asked again. “It was Prince Paul. He was going to kill Neil. You were in it, and he found out about our quest and—“ Annie stopped in mid-sentence and hurried over to the window. Darkness. Annie let out a sigh, thankful it wasn’t a foggy day. “That sounds horrifying!” Nicole joined Annie at the window. “But it didn’t actually happen. Paul is asleep in his bedchamber, just like the rest of us. Surely Neil is safe in his own home as well.” “You’re right.” Annie said as she moved back to her bed. “Sorry for waking you, Nicole. Go back to sleep. I’ll see you in the morning.” “Are you sure you don’t want me to stay?” Nicole asked, concerned. “That’s not necessary, Nicole. Thank you. I will be fine.” Annie gathered up the pile of sheets on the floor and placed them back on her bed. “Alright, m’dear. Goodnight.” With that, Nicole left the room, leaving Annie surrounded by the terrifying thoughts of her dream. ---------------
YAY! Okay, so my last post, I said that the plot was going to start, but I lied. Change of plans. Maybe after this post it will start. I don't really know seeing as I haven't written it yet.

------------ The morning sunlight shone through Annie’s window as it rose over the horizon. Annie rubbed her eyes, making sure she was actually awake. Her nightmare still lingered over her, but she tried to push those thoughts to the back of her mind. Annie had hardly slept after the dream. She lay in her bed all night long tossing and turning, drifting into a light sleep only to be invaded by the same dream. Her soft, feathery bed, which was normally very comforting, seemed hard as a rock, and Annie could not help but squirm throughout the night. She sat looking out the window into the cloudless sky. It was a perfect day, completely opposite to her dream. Annie smiled, knowing the events from the nightmare were not playing out in the same manner. She opened the curtains fully so that the room filled with the warm light. Off in the corner a plain dress hung over the back of a chair. Nicole had let Annie borrow some of her clothes so that Annie would not be recognized as royalty. That was one thing Annie had not thought of. Of course she couldn’t go running off in her best outfits. Especially in Gypsy territory. She would be captured instantly, and the whole quest would have failed. Annie realized for the first time that this was a very big adventure and that she had not thought everything through. The one thing she did know, though, was that Neil would be with her, and they would be able to walk and talk together without anyone’s objection. The thought pleased Annie as she slipped on the brown dress from Nicole. Annie scanned her room one last time before exiting and hurried down the spiral stairs. She was able to sneak by the kitchen and library, hoping nobody saw her. Surely she would be questioned if she were to be seen in such an outfit. Annie hastily turned a corner and ran straight into Nicole. Both let out a soft scream and jumped backwards. “Oh, it’s just you, Nicole.” Annie said with a sigh. “I see you found the dress I put out for you.” Nicole said recovering from the sudden encounter. “Yes I did. Thank you, Nicole. I hadn’t even thought about that.” “That’s what I figured. Well you better get going then!” Nicole turned Annie around and nudged her slightly towards a side door out of the castle. “You don’t want Neil to be waiting for ye.” “Right. Thank you again, Nicole. I shall be back soon! With my father and sisters in tow!” With that, Annie slipped outside, letting the door creak shut behind her. “Be safe Annie dearest.” Nicole said to herself as she stood staring at the closed door. Annie set a quick pace down the long dirt path that led towards the village. She slowed as she came upon the portion of forest where her dream had taken place. A chill spread through her body as images of Paul and Neil flashed through her mind. Annie shook away the thoughts and continued walking. She and Neil had arranged to meet just outside the village at the edge of the forest. That way Annie could say she was staying in the village and Neil wouldn’t have to venture onto the castle grounds. As she neared the village, she could hear the faint neighing of a horse off to her right. Annie scanned the edge of the woods until she saw Neil’s horse grazing on a clump of bushes. As Annie approached the giant creature, she could see a man further in the forest packing things into what looked like to be a little sack. “Neil?” Annie asked as she set down her bag. The man, still a good distance away, stood up, and Annie knew instantly that this was not the person she was expecting. As the figure turned to face her, Annie realized this was no man at all, but merely a boy. She became very embarrassed by being deceived by such a young-looking face. He was certainly taller than she, and when he spoke, Annie was blown away by his deep, resounding voice. “Oh, hello! Neil is coming; he’s just picking up a few more supplies.” The boy picked up his sack off the ground, and started towards the horse to attach it. Out of instinct, Annie took a step back, obviously not knowing who the stranger was. As he moved more into the sunlight, Annie was caught off-guard by his stunning blue eyes. They were almost— soul piercing. Annie was entranced and could not tear her gaze away. “W-Who are you?” Annie muttered. This was obviously Neil’s horse. She remembered it from their first meeting the day before. But Neil had not mentioned anything about having another person aiding them on this quest. And a boy for that matter. Already things were different than how Annie had pictured them. Before the blue-eyed beauty could respond, another voice came from Annie’s left. Now this one she recognized. “Annie!” Neil shouted, quickening his pace towards her. “I apologize for not being here, I was getting some final supplies.” He stopped right in front of her, grinning. It had only been a day, an evening, since he last saw her. But it seemed much longer than that. He was carrying only a large leather case that was slung over his back. Annie guessed it held a guitar. “I see you’ve met this little devil here.” Neil let out a little laugh and walked over to ruffle the boy’s hair. “He’s not very little” Annie muttered under her breath. It was a funny thing to watch, though, for Neil was shorter than the boy, and had to reach up to mess with the dark blob of hair. Neil was obviously stronger, though. His shoulders filled out his tunic nicely, unlike the gangly limbs of the young boy. “This here is Damian. My wee brother.” Damian jerked his head away from Neil, quickly patting his hair back down. “Brother?!” Annie was utterly surprised. She would never have guessed that Neil had a brother. The two looked nothing alike. And the gap between their ages was quite large. “Well technically, no. Not by blood. He’s more like my adopted brother. I’ve taken care of him since he was an infant.” Annie didn’t know what to say. She just looked from Neil to Damian and back again. Neil seemed to read her thoughts, and before Annie could ask, he spoke again. “He has no one else to stay with, and I don’t trust him alone,” Damian gave Neil a false glare as if he was just insulted. Neil nudged him playfully and continued. “He wanted to come with us. A third person might be helpful. I can teach him everything he needs to know and it would be safer for your protection. If it’s alright with you, that is.” Damian looked at Annie with a puppy-dog look in his eyes. This was definitely not planned. Another person? Maybe it could be for the better. After all, he was quite tall, and could probably scare off most people. He certainly looked faster too. Annie could not resist the excitement in those wide, gorgeous eyes. “Yes, he may come.” The two brothers smiled widely. “Now let’s get going.” ------------------

Sorry it's taken me so long to update. I have exams next week and so I've been really busy. Since I most likely will not be able to update for a week-ish, I have a second post ready, you you can get two updates at once! Yay! Enjoy!
------------------- A narrow trail weaved through the forest, climbing up, then down again under the giant trees. Everything was shaded, for only a little light penetrated the dense foliage above them. Annie walked along the path staring at the vast scene in front of her. She had never been this far into the forest before— only to the edge. From time to time she would glance up at the trees branching out at the very top. She could not distinguish where one tree ended, and another began. She was so fascinated that she forgot to watch where she was walking. A root was sticking out of the ground in front of her and made contact with Annie’s foot. She began to fall forward, completely forgetting the trees, focusing only on that split second before she would hit the ground. Annie let out a small cry and stretched her arms out forward bracing for impact, but it never came. “Whoa there.” Neil said softly. He had whirled around and grabbed Annie’s arms before she hit the ground. His reactions were as fast as lightning, and Annie could feel his warm, secure arms holding her. Her heart beat rapidly under all the adrenaline, but she began to calm down as Neil positioned her upright again. She looked at Neil who had a little smile on his face, one that almost made Annie’s legs give out. Luckily he was still holding her, and Annie realized that she too, was grasping his robust forearms. They stood like that for a few moments, clutching each others arms, not saying anything. “You must watch where you step, Annie.” Neil finally said in a hushed tone. “These roots are the least of our worries in here.” He said still smiling in a joking tone. Annie let out a little laugh, but she knew that what Neil had said was the truth. The forest was filled with frightening creatures, and danger lurked around every corner. She had to be more careful. She could gaze at the trees when they stopped for a break, or at night, just not while they were walking. Annie knew there were lots of things she didn’t know about survival and the forest, but she had a feeling that she would learn very quickly— starting with this. “Come on slowpokes!” Damian yelled further down the trail. He had gotten ahead of Annie and Neil setting a quick pace, but the two could not keep up with the young boy. He turned back around and started walking again, only to vanish behind another hill. “Well, we best be going then.” Neil said finally letting go of Annie’s arms. He didn’t want to, but Damian was impatient, and would surely come back again to retrieve them. Neil bent over and picked up his sack that he had dropped in order to catch Annie. He slung it over his shoulder again and began to walk. “Neil?” Neil stopped and turned back around to face Annie. “Thank you. F-For catching me.” A light shade of red rushed to Annie’s face. “You’re welcome, Annie.” Neil responded with a slight nod of his head. The two said nothing more and continued on the path.
Throughout the rest of the day, the three travelers talked about whatever came to mind. Neil told stories of far away lands, Damian talked about his life in the village, and Annie told them about being a princess. Her life seemed so boring compared to Neil and Damian’s. Neil had traveled everywhere, fought vicious criminals, and met numerous amounts of people. Damian spent his days working; working as much as any man, yet still had time to gather with his mates. Annie knew that as a woman, a princess, she was not allowed much freedom. But now she was on an adventure, her own quest, her own mission, to save her family. Surely it would be a great story to tell her grandchildren one day. “Annie, may I ask you a question?” Annie, Neil, and Damian had been walking in silence for sometime. Neil had a question he was dying to ask Annie, one that had been bothering him the entire day. “Of course.” Annie replied gently. “Why did YOU want to go after the Dark Destroyer? There are knights and servants who would gladly die for you and do anything you ask, yet you’re going after him yourself. Why?” Neil clenched his hands, hoping Annie wasn’t offended by the question. The last thing he wanted was for Annie to feel like he didn’t want her on the quest. Neil was glad she was with him, accompanying him, but he was also scared. He was the one to protect her now, not some lousy knight simply carrying out orders. Annie paused for a few moments, collecting her thoughts then began. “Four years ago, my whole family was spending the autumn at our castle on the shore. One evening, my mother went for a walk. She never came back. We looked for her for days, but there was no sign of her.” Annie spoke differently now; she seemed distant, not looking directly at Neil. Neil remembered hearing the news of how Queen Carolyn had disappeared. It was a horrible tragedy, and the royal family worried themselves sick for weeks. Neil had been asked to help look in the woods for the queen, but the search had been called off early for some unknown reason. “We all looked for days, weeks, but she was no where to be found.” Annie continued. “After so many days, we stopped looking. We all accepted the fact that she was gone, and tried to move on. My father was devastated; he didn’t talk to us for weeks. He hardly ate, he hardly slept. Over the next couple years, I asked around trying to find out any information on her disappearance. The only bit I uncovered was told to me by a sailor. “Queen Carolyn was captured by the Dark Destroyer,” was all he said. He had no more information and so I was left with that. I didn’t know if she was alive or not, but I made it my life goal to find out. And that is why I am on this quest with you—to get back at the Dark Destroyer for what he did.” Something in Annie changed, Neil could tell. She no longer seemed like a princess, but was now a fearless fighter. A look of hate burned in her dark brown eyes, and a sense of determination was plastered on her face. “You have spent these past few years trying to solve the disappearance of your mother, the queen, and now I’m making it my duty to make sure you get your answer. I will stick by you no matter what, Annie, even to the death.” Neil’s words had a sharpness to them that pierced Annie. He understood why she was going, yet he did not stop her. He was supporting her, and was willing to die for her. Annie had no other response other than embracing Neil in a warm hug. “And I will do the same, Annie.” Damian insisted. “I know I’m not much of a fighter, but I am smart, and I am fast. We will help you find what happened to your mother.” Annie could not help but smile at Damian, and threw her arms around him for a hug. At that moment, Annie was happy— actually happy with her life. There was no nagging prince around, no servants, no orders, just herself traveling with two brothers. And two very good-looking brothers at that. She knew there were dangers ahead, possibly even death, but that didn’t scare her now. It might have frightened her a week ago, but a new fire was burning inside her, one that could never be put out. -----------------

------------ The three continued walking until they reached a small opening in the forest. It was a flat clearing— the perfect place to spend the night. “We best stop and set up camp here.” Neil suggested, lowering his pack off his shoulders. The ground was covered in a layer of grass, and there was finally a break in the trees above. “I’ll go look for firewood.” Damian called as he ventured off into the trees again. Before Neil could protest, Damian was out of sight. Neil shrugged and turned to see where Annie had wandered to. She was standing at the cliff of the clearing looking out over a slightly lower valley. It wasn’t much of a sight normally, but now Annie stood on the edge silhouetted as the orange and red glow danced around her. Her back was to Neil, and he could see the vibrant colors mixing with the blonde waves of her hair. It was a gorgeous sight— the sunset and Annie. Neil meandered toward her slowly, trying not to disturb the peaceful atmosphere. “Beautiful isn’t it?” Neil’s voice was hardly audible yet it pierced the silence in which they stood. He couldn’t focus on just the sunset, or just Annie. His eyes darted between both, soaking up all the beauty. “Breath-taking.” Annie murmured back. Luckily for Neil, she was too focused on the splendor in front of her to notice Neil’s gaze. “I’m guessing you don’t see the setting sun very often.” Neil said through a mixture of a sigh and laugh. “Rarely.” There was a sadness in Annie’s voice, Neil could tell. How could she not see the sunset? Surely it would bring life and color to the cold, bleak castle. Perhaps there were other things she must do. Still, it puzzled Neil, for this view of bright colors was nothing new to him. It became almost, habitual. “I never knew what I was missing.” Annie continued with the same tone of voice. Neil took a few steps closer, yet Annie didn’t seem to notice. He stood next to her, shoulder to shoulder, in silence, never wanting the moment to end. “Neily, come help me with this, will ya?” Damian shouted as he returned with an armful of wood. Perfect. Neil could see Annie’s shoulders droop in a sigh out of the corner of his eyes. Why did they ever bring Damian along? The boy had no sense of privacy. Neil let out a long sigh and dragged his eyes away from the fading sunset to help Damian. Annie remained a moment longer, the followed in the same manner.
Towards the end of the meal, the day light had almost completely vanished. The light from the fire flickered and danced in the middle of Annie, Neil, and Damian. They sat staring intently as the flames licked the dark sky with fiery tongues, only to disappear instantly. As it slowly burned to ashes, Damian yawned and rubbed his eyes which hurt from the heat and light. “Well, it’s about time for me to go to sleep.” Damian stood up from the log on which he was sitting. “Goodnight Neily. Goodnight Annie. Sleep well.” “Night Damo. See you in the morning.” Neil called to Damian. “Goodnight Damian. Sweet dreams.” Annie added. Damian lay down in the grass a surprising far distance from the fire. Normally he would sleep near the fire for the heat. Maybe he was getting the idea of privacy after all— even if it meant shivering throughout the night. “I suggest you get some sleep too, Annie.” Neil mentioned as he tossed one last branch into the fire. “We have another big day tomorrow. You must be rested.” “Right.” Annie picked up her sack and placed it next to the fire as a pillow. Neil did the same, making his makeshift bed close to Annie’s. He couldn’t bee too far away from her in case something happened during the night. Annie’s protection was Neil’s biggest priority. As Annie lay in the grass, she experienced another beauty. There was an opening in the trees above, and millions of stars were dotted across the dark sky. Annie gasped, completely taken aback by the magnificence of it all. One moment, she was sure she could see pictures in the stars, the next, gone. The mystery of it all fascinated Annie, and she could feel that somewhere, somewhere nearby, her father and sisters were staring at the exact same stars. As if reading her mind, Neil spoke gently, “Go ahead, make a wish upon a star.” “What do I wish for?” Annie asked, confused. Neil rolled onto his side, propping his head up with his hand. “Anything your heart desires. Anything in the world.” Annie’s mind was racing. There were so many things she wanted to wish on. Lucky for her there were plenty of stars in the sky. Finally she settled on a wish, and stared at a star as she thought it through. “Not so bad now was it?” Neil said with a smile on his face. Annie could hardly make out any of his features in the darkness. She answered nonetheless. “That was great. I wished tha—“ “No don’t tell me!” Neil interrupted. “Why not?” Annie asked. “Because it won’t come true if you tell someone. You may tell after it happens.” “I don’t believe it will come true at all.” Annie muttered. “You never know, when you wish, your dreams might come true.” Neil insisted. He thoroughly enjoyed introducing Annie to new natural wonders. Hopefully, though, this was the first of many other similar instances. “Well, goodnight Annie.” Neil rolled onto his back again and closed his eyes. He hardly heard Annie say a return “Goodnight” before drifting off to sleep. Annie remained awake a little while longer, staring at the beauty above her. Neil’s words lurked over her. She knew her wish would most likely not happen, but inside, she really hoped it did. --------------

----------- “Do you think she’s looking for us?” Ruth whispered softy to Joyce. The two girls sat huddled together in complete darkness, their eyes wide open trying to receive as much light as possible. They couldn’t even see their hands in front of their faces, let alone, each other. The cold darkness swallowed the girls, leaving them alone and shivering in solitude. “I don’t know…maybe. She’s probably sent all the knights in the castle after us” Joyce was not certain of this at all, though it gave confidence to her sister. Of course Annie wasn’t coming herself, that’d be way too dangerous. And with whom? Prince Paul? Joyce scoffed at the idea. No, Annie would gather a group of people to go for her. There wasn’t much more to be said. The girls were obviously scared and cold, and worried for their father. King George was not in the same—the same what? They didn’t even know where they were. Their father wasn’t nearby, that’s for sure. The only comfort Ruth and Joyce had was each other. They were both alive and together— for now at least. There was a small hole in the ceiling directly above them which allowed the girls to see the night sky. It was quite beautiful despite their living conditions. Tiny stars were splattered across the vast abyss, some brighter than others. “You should make a wish.” Joyce said gently. It was most likely useless, but no harm in trying. “You as well.” Ruth mentioned. The girls were silent as they wished upon the stars; possibly for the same thing even. Joyce thought that maybe Annie was looking at the same stars. No, it was late, Annie would be back in her bed chamber. But little did she know that Annie was closer than she thought.
Quickening footsteps shook Ruth and Joyce out of their peaceful state. They tightened their grip around each other, not knowing who was approaching so hastily. They could see a faint light as it bounded nearer until at last someone stood before them. The abrupt appearance of such a light was too great for their eyes, causing Ruth and Joyce to squint. The man needed no introduction as he let out a familiar malicious laugh. The girls shivered even more, not just from the cold, but from the corrupt, spiteful villain that stared down at them. “Enjoying your new home?” The Dark Destroyer said nastily in a taunting tone. “It’s not quite like your fancy castle, but it’ll do!” He let out another laugh and took a step towards the girls. They flinched and scooted further back into the corner, trying to be as small as possible. “W-Where is our father?” Joyce tried to sound confident, but had no such luck. The evil grin grew slightly on the Dark Destroyer’s face and he paused, letting the anticipation rise. “Oh, don’t worry. He’s safe— in the Man Cave. You’ll get to see him soon— that is, if you behave.” Ruth and Joyce had never fully believed all the stories about the Dark Destroyer. People spoke of this dark and evil gypsy, but the girls never knew if he really existed. Now that he stood before them, with a golden earring and his hair black as coal, they knew he existed, and that he was as bad as people say. No, he was worse. “Come.” He said yanking Ruth off the ground. She let out a small cry, only to be silenced by a cold glare. The Dark Destroyer hoisted Joyce up in the same manner and led them outside holding firmly onto their upper arms. There was no use in resisting or trying to escape. The Dark Destroyer was far too strong with lightning fast reflexes. And if they did escape, where would they run too? They were deep into the forest, far away from any town or village. No one had been able to find a gypsy camp before. The gypsies always moved from place to place, yet were very secretive and aware of their positioning. This is why some people were so skeptical about their existence. The girls looked around their dimly lit surroundings. It was a whole gypsy village! Caravans were all spread out in every direction, fires blazed in front of each, and different music and songs were faintly heard. A little further in the distance the girls could see a larger fire with smoke bellowing up into the dark sky. As they drew nearer the sounds became louder— talking, singing, and laughing. The Dark Destroyer pushed the girls down onto a log, and tied their hands together with rope. The heavy noise dulled to a low murmur, and everyone turned to stare at Ruth and Joyce. They had never encountered the gypsy type before, especially not at this scale. They looked around, becoming aware that the gypsies were just like normal people—some were beautiful, tall, short, fat, scrawny, big-nosed, old, and young. No wonder they blended in so well. Joyce and Ruth had probably seen gypsies their entire lives and never known it. The thought was both terrifying and calming. “My fellow friends,” the crowd hushed at the sound of the Dark Destroyer’s booming, raspy voice. “I’d like to introduce you to our guests! The princesses, Joyce and Ruth!” The other gypsies started muttering to one another, looking at the girls, then back at each other. The girls didn’t even bother to say their names were switched; that would only cause trouble. “They will be staying with us for a while, so let’s show them how we have a good time!” A while? How long was a while? The girls were so confused—the Dark Destroyer seemed so nice and generous around the other gypsies. Did they know he wasn’t truly like that? Their thoughts were interrupted by a sudden outburst of cheering and yelling. The gypsies were all on their feet now which, in turn, cued the music and singing. It seemed like quite the festive party. The girls sat and watched the dancing and singing around the fire, which was a relief to be able to warm up. The giant bonfire lit up the whole area and was so large neither Ruth nor Joyce could see who or what was on the other side. After what seemed like hours of singing and dancing and drinking, the Dark Destroyer stood up to speak again. The music died and the gypsies turned to listen to their leader. “I have two last surprises for the evening!” The Dark Destroyer was very excited about something. The girls could sense trickery brewing in his mind. There was cheering and clapping as the Dark Destroyer motioned to another gypsy. Two strong-looking gypsies slowly made their way toward the fire. Ruth and Joyce strained their necks to see who was coming, as did every other gypsy. They were dragging someone, someone tall which gave the two gypsies trouble. As they reached the fire, they dropped the person to the ground. Ruth and Joyce gasped and covered their mouths with their tied hands. The Dark Destroyer put his hands on their shoulders, holding them in place. The person who was dragged in moaned and slowly got to their knees. It was King George. He was hardly recognizable through all the dirt and blood, and his clothes had been torn. He looked like a poor peasant. The girls started crying, for there was nothing they could do but watch. “I give you the King! King George!” The Dark Destroyer yelled. There was a giant uproar from the gypsies as George tediously made his way to his feet. He looked over at his daughters with horror and worry in his teary eyes. He was completely powerless. The Dark Destroyer walked around in front of Joyce and Ruth and knelt down in front of them. He grabbed onto both their chins tightly, still with the same evil grin. “Are you ready for the next surprise?” His chilling whisper was so bitter and so mysterious the girls could hardly stand it. He didn’t wait for an answer before waving another gypsy in. Two people slowly sauntered into the crowd. George turned around and dropped to his knees again. “No…” was all he could mutter through a heart-wrenching sob. -------------

Let me know if the colors aren't working for you or you can't see it too well. Still trying to figure out a good color for all the skins. Enjoy!
-------------- “Carolyn? I-Is that really y-you?” King George could hardly form a sentence through all the shock and pain. His wife, the queen, had been gone for four years, possibly dead, but now she stood before them, alive as ever. “Yes George…” Queen Carolyn muttered. She was obviously aching to run and embrace her husband, but was held back by one of the gypsies. She looked slightly older, and her hair was much longer, but still as beautiful as ever. George remained where he was on the ground, completely in shock. “Mother!” Ruth and Joyce yelled as they tried to stand up. “Now wait just a minute,” the Dark Destroyer said as he stepped in front of the girls, blocking their path. “Such a nice family reunion, isn’t it?” He said smirking. “Let the adults speak first.” He pushed the girls back onto the log and motioned for two gypsies to keep an eye on them. The Dark Destroyer yanked George off the ground and nudged him toward Carolyn. Carolyn shook her arm free of the gypsy’s grasp and slowly walked to George. All the gypsies were silent, watching as the two lovers stared at each other. “Carolyn, w-what happened to you?” George whispered. He didn’t know whether he should trust her or not. After all, it HAD been four years and she never contacted him. Carolyn looked away from him, searching for the right words. There was an excruciating pain in her eyes, and her voice quivered as she spoke. “I-I was captured.” She began slowly. “I was captured by the Dark Destroyer and his gypsies and brought back to their camp. They said— they said they would kill you and the girls if I escaped or got a message to you. I couldn’t take that risk George, I just couldn’t.” She was beginning to cry now, hoping George would understand. There was a pause, and now it was George who was searching for words. “You’ve been here, with these, these villains for four years?! What have you been doing, Carolyn? You’re practically one of them now! I suppose you’re off to raid another village soon, aren’t you!” George took a step back from her. He was so confused. He hated being mad at his wife, but at the same time she let him mourn for her for four years. In the bottom of his heart he wished she wasn’t a gypsy. If she was, she would truly be lost. Carolyn took a step forward, closing the gap between them again. “I have been a prisoner, George!” Her voice was stronger now, hoping to explain what happened. “Three measly years I was a prisoner! A year ago, the Dark Destroyer made me a servant, making clothes and meals. I had no power as Queen here. Every day I thought of running away, back to you, but I couldn’t. Please George…” She trailed off. George had so many expressions on his face as he thought it all through. His heart had been broken the past four years, but now the pain he felt was less, and his love for her was stronger than ever. “I’m so sorry, Carolyn.” George wrapped his arms around his wife, holding her as tight as he could. “I love you.” He whispered in her ear. “I love you too, George.” Carolyn whispered back. She was crying harder now, never wanting to leave his arms. As Ruth watched the reuniting of her parents, she noticed the Dark Destroyer was no longer present. She looked around in all directions until something caught her eye. Off in the opposite direction were two dark figures, talking. She squinted, trying to see what was going on. One of them was short, the other, taller, and grasping the reigns of a horse. It was a quick meeting, for the taller of the two mounted the horse and rode off into the night, as the other turned to walk back toward the fire. She thought nothing more of it and turned her gaze back to her family. “Where are my girls?” Carolyn said after their long embrace. George turned to look at his two daughters who were sitting on the log, crying. “Ruth! Joyce! My sweets!” Carolyn ran over and hugged her daughters. “Where is your sister? Where is Anne?” She suddenly got worried again. “We don’t kn—“ “She’s back at the castle, mother.” Joyce interrupted her sister. She did not want to cause her mother more heartache. She would tell her the truth later, when everything wasn’t as overwhelming. At least for now, it gave the Queen comfort. “Oh, that’s good.” Carolyn said through a sigh. “I’m so glad to see you girls. You’ve grown so much in four years.” George joined his girls and knelt down beside them. “I’ve missed you so much.” Carolyn said as she hugged her family all at once. “Aw, now isn’t that just adorable!” The Dark Destroyer’s nasty taunting brought the family back to reality, back to the cold, evil gypsy camp where they were prisoners. “I hate to break up this family moment, I really do, but Carolyn, you have work to do.” His expression returned to a wicked scowl as Carolyn was lead away. “I love you all! We’ll be together soon!” Carolyn yelled over her shoulder as a gypsy dragged her away. “I love you too.” The three said softly through a saddening sigh. They didn’t know if they would see the Queen again, let alone when. There was nothing they could do either but sit and watch her being taken away, again. “Now for you three,” the Dark Destroyer looked down on the royal family, holding each other tightly. We’ve got a very busy day ahead of us tomorrow.” The girls noticed that the gypsies who were around the fire the entire evening were gone, and only three remained. They were definitely very sneaky. “Take them to the Man Cave. And DON’T let them escape.” The Dark Destroyer said to the three gypsies as he walked off. “Sweet dreams, Princesses!” he yelled back, as his signature depraved laugh faded into the dark shadows of the forest. -----------------

---------------- Annie awoke to the sweet sound of humming and the strumming on a guitar. It was almost as if she was still dreaming. The warm sunlight danced across her face as it made its way through the leaves of the trees above. She sat up and found Neil sitting next to Damian, completely engulfed in the song he was playing. He stopped and spoke to Damian, something that Annie couldn’t hear. She decided to get up. They best start their journey again. “Good morning Annie!” Damian’s face lit up when he saw her walking over. “Hello Annie” Neil said, setting his guitar on the ground, hoping she didn’t hear any of his song. “Good morning!” Annie tried to sound awake, but had no luck, and yawned. She had never traveled so far in one day. Even if she did, it most certainly was not by foot. Maybe there was a stream nearby so she could splash water on her face. That would wake her up instantly. Neil let out a little laugh, “How did you sleep?” “Quite well actually.” Annie said. She HAD slept peacefully, which came as a surprise to her. The cold, bumpy ground was nothing like her soft, feathery bed back at the castle. Maybe she was just too weary to notice. “I’m glad,” Neil said with a smile. “Why don’t you have something to eat so we can get going again.” Neil handed Annie some berries he had picked earlier that morning, and a piece of bread that they had brought with them. After their meal, the three packed everything into their sacks again and continued through the forest.
The majority of the day went by quickly. Besides passing a couple of travelers on their way, Annie, Neil, and Damian had no disturbances. They talked about whatever came to mind until the conversation died, leaving them to walk in silence. In the late afternoon, the sun began to set, signaling the time to find a place for the night. They came upon a very small village with several people and animals moseying around. Neil had been to this town before on one of his travels, and knew where they could stay the night. There was a barn-like structure which connected onto a larger house. Neil had become friends with the elderly man who lived there, and got permission to sleep in the vacant barn whenever he needed. After joining the man for their evening meal, the three retired to the barn. “I think I’m going to take a walk.” Annie said. “But we walked all day.” Damian mentioned with a confused look on his teenage face. “Oh it’s just a stroll. Besides, I’d like to see the village. I’ve never been this far into the forest before.” “Alright, well take the lamp with you.” Neil handed Annie the big lantern so she wouldn’t get lost. “Don’t get into any trouble.” He finished. That would be the last thing they wanted; trouble. Or worse, Annie could get hurt. He pushed the thought out of his mind. After all, they were in a secluded little village. “I’ll be back shortly.” Annie said quietly as she closed the wooden door behind her. The village was indeed small, and dim lights shone at each doorway. A slight breeze blew Annie’s hair back, causing her to shiver. She wrapped her cloak tightly around her and began walking. There was no one else outside but Annie. Before she knew it, she was at the edge of the village, staring into the shadowy forest looming in front of her. She held the lantern up higher now, trying to see into the darkness. There was a small trail at her feet, slightly covered by brush and leaves. Annie wandered down the path, glancing from her left to her right and back again. The trail then took a turn and fed into a small meadow. A light fog hovered over the ground as the moonlight reflected off it. Annie stared into the meadow and shivered again—not from the wind but from fright. She was not alone. A dark figure stood in the middle of the meadow, silhouetted by the moonlight. Annie wanted to turn and hurry back to the village, but something inside her pushed her further. She walked slowly, not wanting to disturb whoever was there. As she drew nearer, she noticed it was a man; a very built man. And a very tall one, as it were. An even larger horse stood impatiently next to him, tromping its feet and exhaling into the foggy air. The man never moved, even as Annie approached. He had been facing her the entire time, almost as if—as if he was waiting for her. Annie advanced further and was able to make out the features of his face and body. He was, as she predicted earlier, quite tall, and quite strong. His bare forearm was flexed as he held onto the reigns of his massive horse, and the other lay at his side. Annie could easily see his muscular shoulders, bulging as they held up his open white tunic. His bare chest shone in the moonlight, bordered by a light-colored vest. Annie glanced up at his face, his hair. The man had rather long hair, a light shade too, which was moderately different from anyone Annie had ever seen. It draped down around his face, framing his stunning features. His blue eyes reminded Annie of the sea, luring her in with all their might. Two faint shadows from his dimples appeared as he smiled slightly. She felt as if she was in a trance. She opened her mouth to speak, but was instantly silenced by the soft touch of the man’s finger at her lips. The warmth of his finger sealed his trust within Annie and she was reassured of her safety in his presence. He lifted her chin gently in an attempt to look at her more clearly by the light of lantern and the moon. In a case where any other girl would run, she stayed, entranced by the stranger's eyes. But although he was a stranger to her, this tall, dark figure knew Annie very well. The mysterious man drew Annie’s hand in his, softly turning it over so her palm rested open. He reached back to his horse and clasped something in his own hand before placing it into Annie's. He drew her close with her hand still enclosed his and whispered, "Go now, we will meet again." Annie turned whimsically and tried to find the path she had followed. She turned back to see if he was still watching her, and could see the two piercing eyes that belonged to the stranger whom she had just confronted. Annie slowly walked back to where Neil and Damian had been, but as she walked a mystical wonder eased her mind from the fear she had originally felt. ----------

I apologize for making you all wait so long for an update. Been a wee bit busy and had writers' block here and there. Working on another one after this too! Enjoy!
------------- The next morning came as a daze to Annie. She awoke with her hand grasped tightly around what the tempting stranger had given her the previous night. She placed it deep in her sack where it would be safe. Her head was spinning as thoughts bounced around in her mind. The more Annie thought about it, the less she could remember what had happened. She didn’t even remember coming back into the village. Once again, Annie awoke with Neil and Damian nowhere in sight. The gentle sound of a guitar drifted to Annie’s ears, calming the rapid thoughts and emotions to a lull. The sweet, melodic sound lured Annie out of the barn and around the corner. She was surprised to find not Neil playing the guitar, but young Damian. He sat slightly hunched over Neil’s guitar, strumming away a tune unfamiliar to Annie. His eyes were closed and he nodded his head softly with the beat. He was completely engulfed in the song, not even aware that Annie stood before him. The tune ended leaving the last note lingering in the air until the breeze swept it away. “Does Neil know you’re playing his guitar?” Annie couldn’t help but smile. She new Neil would never let Damian play it. It was far too special. Damian instantly tensed up, knowing exactly what Annie was after. “Of course,” he said hesitantly. Annie shot him a fake glare causing him to give in. “Well he’s not here at the moment, so I thought—ya know.” “Don’t worry Damian, your secret is safe with me.” Annie laughed slightly. “Where is Neil by the way?” She asked trying to sound casual. “He was at the market, last I saw him.” Damian returned his focus to the guitar trying to remember songs he had once heard. “Thanks Damian. I’ll be back shortly.” Annie ambled deeper into the small village, growing nearer and nearer to the market with each step. The sound of soft chatter caught Annie’s attention and stopped her dead in her tracks. Off to her left in the distance were two people conversing, one who was much taller than the other. She soon realized the shorter of the two was Neil. She’d recognize him anywhere. His short brown hair which revealed multiple colors in the sunlight, the way his shoulders slanted downwards at a small angle leading into his well-developed arms, and the movement of his hips as he swayed from one leg to the next, releasing the pressure of holding up his strong structure. She could not deny the fact that she had feelings growing for him. But she was able to conceal them. That was something she was surely good at. Annie struggled to shift her gaze away from Neil to see who the other man was. Her breath caught in her throat causing her to gasp. She had seen this man before. He was the stranger from the previous night. Annie could recognize his light blonde locks of hair as he brushed them out of his face, and clearly remembered those piercing eyes from when they watched her disappear back into the forest. His tall black horse was further off in the distance, though not so far as to be unrecognizable. The whirlwind of emotions flooded back into Annie’s mind as she stood, feet plastered where they were, and watched. Suddenly Neil turned around and motioned for Annie to join them. She did not want to move but her feet had a mind of their own. The same force as the night before dragged her forward, despite her mental contradictions. All the noises around her were drowned out by the sound of her own heartbeat, thumping rapidly as she approached. There she was; standing in front of the mysterious man again, only this time in broad daylight. A light shade of red was painted on her cheeks, hopefully not too noticeable. “Annie, I’d like you to meet someone.” Neil began once Annie had reached them. “This is Keith. He’s a traveler and trader. I’ve crossed paths with him several times. He may be able to help us.” Help? Annie didn’t want any help. She especially did not want others to know who she was. She hoped Neil didn’t explain very much to his new friend here. Nevertheless, she nodded her head slightly, greeting the man whom she had already secretly met. She hoped Neil remained clueless about the previous night. She would never be let out of his sight again if he knew she was seeing strangers alone in a dark forest. “Hello my lady.” Keith said softly as he responded in the same manner, followed by a small grin. The little dimples near his mouth were more apparent now, and Annie was able to see the light shadow of stubble as it ran around his chin. His voice was gentle, yet powerful at the same time. It was most certainly hypnotizing. He was younger than she had originally predicted though, and she became slightly embarrassed to be so drawn to him. The younger women must faint just by catching a glimpse of his smile. Annie remained silent, however. Neil suddenly became suspicious. There was obviously something troubling on her mind, but he could ask about that later. “Would you care to explain to Annie what you told me?” Neil continued, looking back up at Keith. Keith nodded again and began to tell her what he knew. “There is a village nearby, perhaps a day’s travel, which is hosting a festival at dusk tomorrow. It is a grand event with all the neighboring towns invited. A great feast, lively music, and plenty to drink await anyone who is willing to attend. This year is special, however. It is a masked festival. Those who show must be wearing a mask. Contests will be held for the most extravagant outfit, along with prizes and other surprises.” Keith paused. “And, it’s the perfect setting to learn clues about your family.” He trailed off. So he DID know who Annie was. Neil had apparently told him that detail. The idea of going to this festival appealed to Annie. She had never been to one before, and it was a way to talk with people while remaining anonymous. She turned to Neil and could see the ambitious look in his glistening brown eyes. A faint smile inched its way onto Annie’s face, which was soon mirrored by Neil’s. They both faced Keith again, and nodded in unison. Neil and Annie were going to the festival. The excitement returned deep in Annie’s stomach, even stronger than before. Perhaps Keith would be of help after all. “Well then, you’re going to need masks.” ---------

----------- “Had you met Keith before?” Neil asked Annie suddenly. They had been walking from the little village to the neighboring town for the festival; however, Annie was unusually silent. She wanted to tell Neil about her encounter with Keith, but feared what the outcome would be. Plus, she didn’t want Neil to get the wrong impression. What would he think of her if she was meeting strange, and not to mention attractive, young men in the forest in the middle of the night? Neil was supposed to be her protector, her guardian, and would surely be frowned upon for letting her explore alone. She did not want that to happen. Annie was hesitating. She didn’t want to lie, but what else would she say? “Not directly. I caught a glimpse of him at another village. It was just strange seeing a familiar face again.” Annie finally stated. There was truth to it. She WAS caught completely off-guard by seeing Keith again. Neil stopped walking, hardly convinced with what she had said. He looked deep into her eyes searching for the truth. Annie could tell he was concerned. He had every right to be. “If you say so.” Neil brushed it off and continued on the road. That was not the response Annie was preparing for. They both knew there were more layers to her truth. She hurried up to him, now redirecting the question. “Would it really matter if I had met him before?” she questioned. If her eyes didn’t give away the lie at first, this statement most certainly did. She mentally cursed herself for saying it and made sure to think before she spoke next. “No, not necessarily,” Neil began. “Though he’s an interesting fella. I wouldn’t trust him though.” “Why is that?” Now it was Annie who was confused. Keith seemed like a normal merchant and traveler, just like anyone else; just like Neil. “No one ever knows what his motives are. Or where he comes from.” Neil was cautioning Annie. Something wasn’t right about Keith. He could feel it. However, he thought against telling Annie that. He also left out the part of telling Annie not to see him again. Although he would never admit it, Neil thoroughly enjoyed Annie’s company. He dreaded the day after their quest when he would leave her and go back to his normal life. He dared not to think of that day. Annie had become a close friend to him, and he was able to get to know her more than most people. She was so different than what everyone describes, which is what drew Annie to him. The uniqueness and hidden talents were exposed more and more each day, making him grow fonder of her. But he was a blacksmith, not royalty. Nothing would ever come of it. Neil and Annie had decided to leave Damian back under the protective care of the elderly man in the village they had just left. After all, they were only going to be gone for one night. Neil had given Damian a sword and taught him a quick lesson on how to use it properly. Not like he would ever need to, however. After much protest, Damian stayed behind, keeping Neil and Annie’s belongings safe. Neil was somewhat glad to have more time alone with Annie too. Plus, they wouldn’t have to have a constant watch over Damian during the festival. The faint noise off in the distance interrupted both their thoughts. Annie and Neil could hear the gentle sound of music and gather of people as they reached the outskirts of the town. They were just on time, for the sun rested on the horizon and the clouds were painted with beautiful vibrant colors. Annie and Neil joined the wandering people as they strolled down the narrow dirt street toward the town square. Along the way, Annie noticed all the shops and houses were closed and locked up. This was a larger festival than she expected. As they neared the village square, the sounds and smells became more lively and exotic. Upon reaching the edge of the festivities, Neil and Annie stopped in their tracks, mouths gaping open. Hundreds of torches and candles lit the village center, giving off a warm, welcoming glow for miles around. Several tables lined an edge of the square, displaying an entire feast of food and drink. The delicious mixing aromas wafted through the air, brushing beneath Annie and Neil’s noses then vanishing into the dusk sky. The sweet, delectable smell of meat, breads, fruits, and pies filled the air, luring people over to the tables. In addition to the appealing smells, the sight of all the gorgeous decorations was almost overwhelming. Magnificent centerpieces of flowers, leaves, and homemade items covered each empty part of the tables, and multi-colored strips of cloth hung off them. Annie and Neil inched their way along the sides of the tables, squeezing between the throng of people. At one corner of the square, Annie spotted a table displaying gowns of all different colors. She hurried over to get a closer look, weaving in between the crowd. As she reached the table, Annie fully realized how young the merchant girl was. She couldn’t have been more than seventeen or eighteen years of age; though she was quite pretty, as her straight brown hair draped over her shoulders. Annie picked up the dress which had caught her eye earlier, and gazed at its beauty. It was a red velvet dress with varying shades of red throughout the entire fabric. A thin golden trim bordered the low neckline and traveled around to criss-cross in the back. It was perfect for Annie, seeing as it matched her mask Keith gave her. “Lovely, isn’t it?” The soft voice of the young girl broke Annie’s daze. “Very much so,” Annie replied. “What’s it worth?” “Three silver pennies, madam.” “Annie reached into a small pocket and pulled out the coin sack she was carrying. She handed the young girl the money and picked up the gown again. “You may change back here, if you’d like.” The girl said pointing to a curtain hanging behind the table. Annie thanked the girl and hurried to change, just as Neil emerged from the crowd. Once Annie had changed into her new attire, she passed through the curtain to see Neil and the girl waiting for her. Neil had been in deep conversation with the young merchant, though suddenly became speechless upon seeing Annie. His mouth hung open slightly and his eyes were a bit wider than normal. The girl turned to see what he was looking at and immediately imitated Neil’s reaction. Annie’s wavy hair framed her face and hung down a few inches below her shoulders. The light blonde color in her hair had turned a light shade of strawberry red from being outside for so many days. Both shades were visible as she stood beneath a weak light. Neil’s heart skipped a beat as he ran his eyes down her body. The velvet red dress fit her figure perfectly, showing each curve of her body. The tight sleeves flared out gradually at her hands they rested at her side. Neil couldn’t take his eyes off her. She looked completely stunning. “What do you think?” Annie asked through a slight grin. Neil tried to form words though his mouth was too dry. Luckily for him, the young girl spoke up, saying exactly what he was thinking. “It’s absolutely gorgeous!” she exclaimed, stepping closer to get a better look at Annie. “You think so?” Annie said still smiling. “Oh most certainly!” the girl continued. “Do you like it?” “Very much so.” Annie insisted. “Besides, it’s perfect for this evening.” She finished. Looking over at Neil, she realized he had purchased something new as well. Although it wasn’t much, he looked different. Instead of the plain brown vest he always wore, a new fashionable one took its place. It was a nice cream and back vest covered in gold stitching. The designs from the stitching were small yet very intricate and like Annie’s, his complemented his mask. Annie could feel her heart race as she looking him over. His deep down eyes which matched his short, somewhat spiky hair shimmered in the light, and the two of them stood staring at each other for a few moments. “I see you found something suitable here as well.” Annie said softly, breaking the silence between them. Although the hoard of people bustling around Neil and Annie were making a great deal of noise, to them, nothing else in that moment existed. “Well I couldn’t be walking around looking like a blacksmith all evening now could I?” Neil responded in a slight joking manner. Annie let out a soft laugh. “No, you couldn’t.” She replied in the same tone. Once again, Neil was at a loss for words. He wished he could just remain in the moment forever, though he knew that wasn’t possible. The music suddenly changed into an upbeat, dance sound, and Neil got an idea. “Would you care to dance?” he asked Annie, nodding his head in the direction of the music. ”I don’t know how to dance like that.” Annie said at she looked at the people already moving with the music. “Oh it’s easy. C’mon, I’ll teach you.” Neil insisted with a grin, grabbing Annie’s hand and leading her into the crowd. “Annie? Neil?” A familiar voice stopped them in the middle of the square. They both turned in the direction of the speaker, looking confused at the masked person who stood before them. -----------

Again, I'm sorry for the long wait!! I have another post ready after this so hopefully it won't be as long of a wait! Enjoy!
---------------- The tall masked figure in front of them removed his mask, and Annie and Neil instantly knew who it was. “Keith?” They both said simultaneously. Annie realized why he was unrecognizable, apart from the mask. He had changed outfits completely. Instead of his traveler attire, Keith now took on a completely different persona. High black boots covered his lower legs, rising up over his knees to the middle of his thigh and matching almost exactly to his dark pants. Instead of the loose white shirt he was dressed in earlier, a tighter dark blue velvet top covered his broad upper body. It was mostly plain with long sleeves and a slight flair out at the torso, though minute white stitching ran vertically from his chest to shoulders. His mask was a similar color, simple as well, though the thing that stood out the most was his hat. It was somewhat small, though there was extra room between the hat and Keith’s head, giving it an airy appearance. There was a narrow brim that circled the edge of the hat and a large bright blue feather extended off the side. Annie looked him up and down, trying to take in the drastic change. All in all, he looked fabulous and fit in with the crowd perfectly. “I see you made it alright.” Keith said grinning. His dimples were quite visible in the surprisingly well-lit village square, and his hair remained exactly as it was their first encounter. “That we did.” Neil replied simply. “With new clothes too. Very appropriate. You look wonderful Annie.” He said staring at her with a small grin. Annie blushed slightly, though hopefully not too much to notice. “Thank you Keith. You cleaned up quite nicely yourself.” Annie said with a smile mirroring Keith’s. “If you would excuse us Keith, we were actually on our way somewhere.” Neil broke up the conversation. He was dying to dance with Annie, though he tried not to show it. He still didn’t trust Keith either. His gut sensed something iffy and he wanted to keep his distance from him. Neil also hated how Keith looked at Annie. He attempted to convince himself he wasn’t jealous, though he had so such luck. “Very well then,” Keith said graciously. “I’ll leave you to that. Later.” He said and vanished as smoothly as he entered. Neil realized he was still holding on tightly to Annie’s hand. Once again the music changed and Neil guided Annie to where others were gathered for the dance. “I’m not so sure about this Neil. “Annie said hesitantly as he turned to face her. “Oh you’ll love it Annie. Just give it a try.” Neil was trying hard to convince her to dance. “I suppose if I’m ever going to be queen I must know how to dance.” Annie began. Neil’s expression grew and the all-too-familiar smile returned to his face. “And no better time to start than now.” Annie finished. Though was tentative and right on track for embarrassment, her desire to dance with Neil, to hold each other, to gaze into each other’s eyes, was much greater. “Thank you.” Neil said in an exasperated sigh. ‘You’ll love it, I promise.” The music began once again and Neil and Annie took their place with the other couples dancing. As the music came to a stop, Annie realized how much fun she just experienced. She had never smiled and laughed for so long in her entire life and during those few minutes, nothing else was on her mind but Neil. The swift turns and bows, exchanging of partners and the multiple lifts gave Annie a thrill that she never wanted to lose. She and Neil were both panting lightly, though they hardly noticed. The dance had ended with Neil lifting Annie off the ground slightly and now they stood staring and smiling at each other. Neil’s hands remained pressed against Annie’s hips and hers rested on his sturdy shoulders. “See? Now was that so difficult?” Neil said in a somewhat mocking tone. He was amazed at how well she had done. Aside from stepping on his feet several times, Annie flowed fluently with Neil, making them the perfect pair for the dance. “That was brilliant!” Annie let out a gentle laugh through her words. “I never knew that could be so much fun!” She finished, beaming. “Well you’re quite the natural! And a quick learner.” Neil insisted. “That’s only because I had an excellent teacher.” Annie said truthfully. She and Neil were still extremely close, leaving only inches between them. Once again though, they were not aware of the mass of people gathering around them. Neil was at loss for words again and all he could do was smile. Annie never ceased to amaze him, especially in these sorts of settings. Something came over him just then though, a burst of content and confidence. “Annie…” Neil began, not know where this was heading. Annie looked deep into his brown eyes, urging him to continue without actually saying a word. “Annie, I—” ----------------------
