Damian McGinty was standing on a corner of a street in Dublin. He wasn’t really looking at anything and yet he was looking at everything. “You scouting girls again Damo?”, Keith, his brother, came up behind him. Well, he wasn’t REALLY his brother, but he may as well have been. They were in the same singing group, Celtic Thunder, and Keith slagged him constantly. Currently, the whole group was in Dublin for recordings and rehearsals for their upcoming tour. “No Keith”, Damian responded. “I’m not scouting girls. I’m justy looking” Keith laughed. “You JUST got rid of the last one. Give it time, mate” “She wasn’t my type”, Damian defended himself. It was true. The last girl had been too whiney. Keith rolled his eyes. “Any girl who’s interested in sticking around for more than a week isn’t your type.” Damian opened his mouth, about to defend himself about that too, when another group member, Paul walked up. “That was the worst movie ever”, he announced. Damian lauged. They had all just come out of the cinema. They, being the lads of Celtic Thunder. “Oh come on Paul”, Damian said. “It was hilarious!” Paul shook his head. “Worst. Movie. Ever.” “I liked it”, Ryan Kelly said as he walked up. “Why are you guys just standing here?” “Damian’s looking for a new girl”, Keith jumped in. “Again” Damian sighed. “You guys make me sound like some messed up, twisted, creeper. I’m not. I’m just looking” “Sure, sure”, Paul waved him off. “But hey, I’m going back to the hotel. I’ll see you lads later” “Yea, I’m out as well”, Keith said as he pulled out his cell phone. “I’ll see you two later” Ryan looked at Damian. “Come on Damo, I’ll take you to a pub” Damian grinned. “Lead the way” Ryan and Damian headed down the street, Damian staring at all the girls as he walked past. As they were sitting down, a mutual friend of theirs, Cassandra, walked up. Being that they always used the same studio for recording, the lads frequented Bailey’s Pub often and knew most of the workers there. Cassandra was one of the waitresses, 19 years old, and very pretty. “Hello you two”, she greeted with a smile. “What can I get you?” Damian winked at her. “Well, it all depends on what your selling” Cassandra just laughed. She was used to this kind of talk from him. And for that, Damian was glad. He liked being able to playfully flirt without women expecting a relationship. Because a relationship was NOT what Damian was looking for. He had tried that before… it hadn’t worked out. Damian tried to push those thoughts away as he focused on what Cassandra was saying. “I’m not serving anything that’s not edible”, Cassandra said with a smile. Damain grinned. “Oh there is a LOT I could say to that” “But you’re not going to”, cassandra finished. “Now Ryan, why don’t you set an example for young Damian and order a drink” Ryan, who had been listening to the conversation silently, laughed. “This lad needs more than a good example to set him straight. But I’ll have a Guinness.” Cassandra turned back to Damian. “See? That wasn’t too difficult. Now you try” Damian laughed. “Okay, okay. I’ll have a Coke” “Will do”, Cassandra wrote it down. “I’ll be back in a sec” “Hurry back”, Damian called after her. Ryan laughed. “You never stop, do you?” “Nope”, Damian grinned. “Wouldn’t you rather just find ONE girl and have a real relationship?”, Ryan asked. Damian looked down at the table. Ryan knew better than to get into this. “It’s not worth it Ryan”, he said. “You know what happened last time” Ryan nodded. “I’m just saying…” Just then, Cassandra came back with their drinks. Damian sighed inwardly. Looks like Ryan was in the mood to talk. But Damian didn’t want to talk....
as always... honest opinions and any constructive critisism is greatly appreciated . enjoy!

Cassandra put their drinks down and left, but not before Damian winked at her. Cassandra good naturedly rolle her eyes and left. Damian turned back to the table to see Ryan giving him a pointed look. “THAT’S what I want to talk about”, Ryan said. “Oh come on Ryan”, Damian groaned. “It’s not hurting them. In fact, I bet girls LIKE the attention” Ryan shook his head. “No. If you know them well enough, maybe they might feel comfortable playing along. But most girls don’t-“ “Ryan”, Damian interuppted. “It’s not like I go hitting on random girls on the street. That’s just creepy.” Ryan gave him another pointed look. “What??”, Damian asked. Ryan chucckled. “Nothing. I’m just wondering how long you’re going to keep this up. I mean, I know it’s been 2 years, but-“ “Ryan…”, Damian started. He really didn’t want to get into this. Ryan knew the story and he knew Damian’s reasons for not wanting a relationship. So why was he bringing it up? “No Damian, listen. Not all women are like that. Most are actually very mature.” Damian tried not to scoff, but Ryan caught it anyway. “I’m serious”, Ryan insisted. “Can we please not talk about it?”, Damian asked as Ryan’s phone started ringing. Ryan gave him a look, as if to say the conversation wasn’t over, and looked at his phone. “Hey Keith”, he answered. Ryan continued to talkon the phone and Damian started to zone out, thinking about the conversation he had just had and what had happened two years ago, just a year after he had started Celtic Thunder… “Damo”, Ryan’s voice broke into his thoughts. “What?” Ryan grinned. “Come on, we’re going back to the hotel”, he took one last sip of his drink. Damian blinked. “Why?” “Keith has a surprise for us”
Damian and Ryan walked into the lobby of the hotel and saw Keith talking to a red headed girl, who’s back was to them. “Well, well, well. Look who decided to show up!”, Keith called to them, looking over the girl’s shoulder. The girl turned around to see who Keith was talking about. Damian grinned when he saw Keith’s little sister, Rebecca. “Rebecca!”, both he and Ryan called in unison. Rebecca beamed and ran over to them. “EEEK! Hey you two! I missed you guys!”, she squealed. She gave Ryan a hug first and then turned to Damian. “Well, don’t you look pretty”, he said as he kissed her on the cheek. Rebecca giggled. “Why thank you, Mr. Flirt. Come over here, I want to introduce you two to my friend.”, she led them over to where Keith and another, brown haired girl were standing. Damian hadn’t noticed this girl before, but looking at her now, she was very beautiful. Her long mane of brown, curly hair framed her face and accented her blue eyes. “Damian, Ryan, this is Shannon, a friend of mine. She’s here visiting with me”, Rebecca introduced. “Hello Shannon, it’s good to meet ya”, Ryan shook her hand. Damian held out his hand as well. “Hello, I’m Damian. What’s the craic?” Shannon smiled and shook his hand. “Hi, it’s great to meet you too” “Now how much did Rebecca have to bribe you to come here?”, Damian asked. “I mean, these lads are really quite boring.” Keith laughed. “WE’RE boring? What about you? The one that just sits around and watches the footy all day?” “I think that’s WHY Rebecca brought her”, Ryan put in. “Because she knew she would bo so bored that she wanted to bring someone to keep her company” Rebecca was laughing now. “That’s exactly why”, she said sarcastically. “Where are the rest of the lads?” Keith shrugged. “Who knows” Damian grinned. “Well, it’s their loss. They don’t get to be in the presence of two beautiful ladies”, he winked at Shannon. Shannon smiled, which had been Damian’s goal. For some reason, he wanted to get this girl to open up to him. This was going to get interesting…

“So did you get everything settled in your hotel room, Rebecca?”, Ryan asked. Rebecca nodded. “Yep! So we want to go do something. And we want you boys to pay for it” Damian laughed. “You’re funny Rebecca. Would that be implying that you would like to go on a date?” “Well, it depends. Are you asking me?”, Rebecc joked back. Damian raised his eyebrows at her and Rebecca laughed. “Seriously though, do you lads have rehearsal or something? Cus Shannon and I don’t want to be on our own tonight.” Keith gave his sister a one armed hug. “Don’t worry, we’re not going to abandon ya. We don’t have rehearsal until tomorrow morning” “Good!”, Rebecca beamed. “So what do you want to do?”, Ryan asked. Damian looked at Shannon. “I think Shnnon should decide”, he smiled at her. “She’s the guest” Rebecca put her hands on her hips playfully. “And what am I?” “You’re the family member that’s a guest, but you’re family, so you don’t get treated like one”, Damian grinned at her. Rebecca just rolled her eyes. Damian went over to her and wrapped his arms around her in a hug. “Come on, you know I’m only joking”, he said. He really loved joking with Rebecca like this. She was one of the few that actually played along. Probly cus she was one of the few that actually knew he was only joking most of the time. He turned to Shannon again. “So. What do you want to do?” “Oh I don’t know”, Shannon shrugged. “We could all go to a movie” “Just did that”, Ryan replied. “Unless Keith and Damo don’t mind going again…” “Well… actually…”, Keith hesitated. “We’ll go”, Damian replied. Keith turned to him, giving him a disbelieving look. “Shannon wants to go see a movie, so we should go see a movie”, Damian said to him. He tried to signal to Keith with his eyes to get him to go along. “Oh no”, Shannon protested. “If Keith doesn’t want to-“ “It’s fine”, Damian insisted. “Anything for a pretty girl. And besides, Keith doesn’t really mind. Right Keith?” Keith gave him a look that said Damian was going to get an earful later, but then turned to Shannon. “Of course I don’t. Like Damo said, you’re the guest” Shannon looked between the two of them, as if trying to decide whether Keith was sincere in his wanting to go to the movie or not. Of course he wasn’t, but Shannon didn’t need to know that. “Come on”, Damian smiled at her. “Keith really doesn’t care” “Nope”, Keith shook his head. “I really don’t” Shannon laughed. “Okay. If you’re sure. So what movie do you want to see?”
10 minutes later, Keith, Ryan, Damian, Rebecca, and Shannon walked into the theatre. The lady gave them a strange look as she recognized the three lads coming back a second time, but didn’t say anything. Going inside, Damian made sure to sit next to Shannon. No harm in getting to know the young girl. “So, how old are you?”, he asked. “17”, she answered. “Just like you” Damian was taken aback at that comment at first until he realized that Rebecca had probably told her. “Aye, I am”, he replied with a smile. “Are you in school?” Shannon nodded. “I’m going for music.” “Good choice”, Damian grinned. “I bet you have a really pretty voice” Shannon shrugged. “I’m not terrible, but it definitly needs work”, she laughed a bit. Damian highly doubted that. She had the look of a born singer. “I highly doubt that”, he spoke his thoughts aloud. “I think you should sing for me sometime” Shannon’s face started to get adorably red. “Umm… I don’t know. I don’t usually sing in front of people unless I know them well” Damian grinned. “Well, we could get to know each other. Well.” She had kind of walked into that one. Just then, the lights went down and the movie started. But Damian continued to look at Shannon, waiting for a response. “Well of course we’re going to get to know each other. I’m going to be here for a month”, Shannon tried to blow it off. Damian chuckled to himself, enjoying how she was avoiding the point. “At least sing for me once before you leave. Please?” “I’ll think about it”, Shannon replied as she turned to watch the movie. Damian turned to the movie as well, but he didn’t pay attention to a single minute of it. He was too busy thinking about the girl sitting beside him.

The next morning, the lads went down to meet Rebecca and Shannon for breakfast before rehearsals. Well, some of the lads. It was Keith, Damian, and Neil. The other lads were off doing their own thing. The 5 were sitting at a table in the hotel dining room, enjoying pancakes, Damian putting extra syrup on his. “But that’s not the point”, Keith was arguing. “With football, you just get all sweaty and you end up getting kicked in the shins a lot.” “Not if you run fast”, Damian countered. He and Keith had this argument pretty often. The two girls were just sitting back and watching the debate. Damian took a bite of food as he answered. “I mean, I WANT to learn to surf, I just don’t have time. And I don’t want to get eaten by sharks”, he added, almost as an afterthought. “They wouldn’t go after you anyway”, Keith slagged. “You don’t look appetizing at all, mate” Damian just laughed. “What do you think?”, he turned to Shannon. “Do you think I look appetizing?” Shannon giggled. She seemed to be getting used to Damian’s comments. “Maybe if you combed your hair a bit. But it would just get messed up in the water anyway, so I think you’re safe” Damian was about to reply with some witty comment, but then he saw a very familiar figure out of the corner of his eye. “There she is!”, he called as his dance partner, Haley Jo, walked up to the table. “Hey everyone!”, Haley greeted. She was a very bubbly, friendly, girl who was always full of happiness and laughter. Damian fully enjoyed working with her. He stood up to give her a hug and a kiss on the cheek. “What’s the craic?”, he asked. “Not much”, Haley beamed. “Haleyyyy!”, Rebecca squealed as she jumped up tp greet her. The two girls squealed and hugged and did whatever else girls did when they saw each other. Damian had never understood that. Whenever girls got together, they acted as if they had been seperated for years. “Haley, this is Shannon”, Rebecca introduced. “She’s a friend from home” “Hey Shannon!”, Haley greeted her like an old friend. “It’s great to meet you. I hope this lot hasn’t driven you insane yet” Shannon laughed. “Oh no, not yet.” “’Yet’ being the key word”, Rebecca said, giggling. “Hey!”, Keith objected. “Come on, we’re not THAT bad” Rebecca and Haley both turned to him with dubious looks and raised eyebrows, causing Damian to laugh. The girls ignored this. “Oh Haley, me and Shannon have to talk to you about something then”, Rebecca said. “Okay…”, Haley responded slowly. Damian watched them, they seemed to be having some sort of girl conversation with their eyes. “Talk about what?”, Neil spoke for the first time. “Nothing”, Rebecca smiled sweetly at him. Damian looked at the other lads. They seemed just as confused as he was. “Well”, Keith stood up suddenly. “We have to get ready for rehearsal, so we’ll leave you girls to your talk” “We will?”, Damian asked. He didn’t want to go yet. He wanted to continue talking with Shannon. “Yep”, Keith went over and clapped him on the shoulder. Neil stood up as well. “Come on Damo, let’s go” Damian stood up and reluctantly followed the other two out of the room. As soon as they got outside, Keith turned on him. “What. They heck. Are you doing?” Damian was taken aback. “What?” Neil looked between the two lads. He somehow seemed to know what Keith was talking about. “You’re such a flirt Damian”, Keith continued. “Seriously, at least give Shannon a chance to get to know the group before you scare her away” Damian almost scoffed. He had thought Shannon was enjoying her time here. “I’m just being meself, Keith”, he said. “Maybe that’s the problem”, Keith replied. “Just… be careful. I’ve known Shannon forever. She’s Becca’s best friend. I don’t want her thinking you like her or anything…” “What if I do like her?”, Damian asked. It was true. For some reason, Damian loved making this girl laugh. He enjoyed trying to get her to come out of her shy shell. Keith raised his eyebrows. “I meant she might think you actually want to get into a relationship with her. I know your terms of ‘like’ Damo. You flirt and go out once, maybe twice?” “Exactly”, Damian said, reaffirming that point to both Keith and himself. Because he didn’t want a relationship. And not even beautiful Shannon was going to change that.

Damian was an eejit. He really was. It was after rehearsals and he had been about to curl up in his bed and watch Lost reruns. Until he noticed that he had left his phone back in the studio. And that was why he was an eejit. He hurried his steps as he walked back, not really paying attention to what he was doing. When he got inside, he stopped suddenly when he saw Shannon standing in the middle of the set. What was she doing? And why was she alone? “Shannon?”, Damian asked, slight amusement showing in his voice. Shannon whirled around. She had been just standing there, taking everything in. “Damian”, she said in a surprised voice. She had obviously thought she was alone. Which she had been, until 2 seconds ago. Damian smiled. “What are you doing?”, he asked as he walked up to her. Shannon shrugged. “Just looking. I’ve never seen a set like this before” Damian nodded, remembering his amazement when first seeing sets up close, not to mention this one, which was especially large. “Where’s Rebecca?”, he asked, sticking his hands in his pockets. Shannon turned to look back at the set. “She’s off with Keith somewhere. But I don’t mind. I wanted to explore a bit anyways” Damian chuckled. “So you like adventures then? Exploring?” Shannon smiled, her dimples standing out against her creamy skin. “I like theatre sets” “Ya know, this set isn’t even as big as the original one we had in Toronto”, he explained. Shannon looked at him in disbelief. “It’s not? I mean, Rebecca showed me the DVD and they look the same…” “Oh they are”, Damian assured. “It’s just that this one’s smaller and more cramped. The other set was too large to take on tour, so Sharon modified it. Now we have to learn a lot of new choreography to fit the smaller stage” Shannon nodded, as if it all made sense now that Damian had explained it. “Do you want me to show you around?”, he asked. “Come over here”, he led Shannon over to the bench. Damian sat down and patted the seat next to him. “Here, sit down” Shannon carefully sat down on the bench, as if it would break if she wasn’t careful. “This is the bench I use for Standing On The Corner”, he explained. “I liked that one!”, Shannon commented. “And you had to wear that golfing outfit”, she giggled a bit. Damian pretended to be offended. “Hey! I like that outfit! You know it’s actually mine? I really wear it when I golf” Shannon’s eyes got wide. “Really??” Damian laughed now. She looked genuinely concerned that she had offended him by giggling. “No, I’m only joking. It’s just a costume”, he grinned. This time, Shannon’s blue eyes went from being wide with worry to and exasperated roll. “Oh ha. Ha. You’re too funy”, she said sarcastically. “I really thought you were serious!” Damian grinned again. “Aye, I’m sorry. I was just slaggin’ ya. I only wanted to see those dimples again”, he winked at her. Shannon couldn’t help but smile at the unexpected complinent, efectivley making those adorable dimples show themselves. “There they are!”, Damian teased her. He had an urge to pinch her cheek. And oddly, he didn’t know why. “You’re such a flirt Damian”, Shannon said softly as she shook her head. “I don’t know, Dimples”, Damian made the nickname up on the spot. “It’s not my fault you smile a lot, now is it? I’m just pointing out an obvious fact” Shannon just shook her head. “I need to go”, she said slowly as she stood up. “Go? Why?”, Damian was caught off guard by her sudden departure. He had just gotten there… Shannon started walking away. “I need to get back to Rebecca. I’ll see you later”, she called. “Tomorrow?”, Damian asked. Shannon smiled a bit. “Yea. Later!”, she said as she rushed out the door. Damian sat there, staring at the place where Shannon had been sitting 2 seconds before. Why had she run off like that? He sighed and slowly stood up. He was walking out when an object sitting on the fountain caught his eye. Damian picked up his forgotten cell phone and sighed again, slowly walking out the door.

“And where were you?”, Paul asked as Damian walked back into the hotel. Paul and Ryan were just coming out of the elevator, looking like they were ready for a night out. “I forgot my phone back at the studio”, Damian held up the phone to show them. “Way to go, mate”, Paul clapped him on the back to go along with his sarcastic congratulations. “At least you got it back though”, Ryan put in. “If Keith had found it, then you really would have been in trouble.” Paul laughed. “He would have called every number in your contacts, just to wind you up” Damian chuckled. “Yea, probly” Ryan looked at him in that way of his. It was that concerned, calculating look that he always gave when he could tell that something was wrong. Paul had still been coming up with stuff to do to Damian’s phone, but Ryan turned to him. “Paul, shut up a second. What’s up Damo?”, he looked at him. “Nothing”, Damian played dumb. Ryan didn’t need to know about his girl problems. And Damian didn’t even know if he wanted to talk about it yet. Wait, girl problems? Damian didn’t have girl problems, cus he didn’t have a girl. And that’s the way it was going to stay. He had spent the last two years trying to get to this point, he wasn’t going to let one girl ruin it all. Even if this girl WAS extremely pretty, and smart, and funny, and cute, and- “Oh don’t play dumb Damian”, Ryan interrupted his thoughts. “Oh he doesn’t have to play”, Paul slagged. Damian rolled his eyes. “Thanks Paul” Paul put a hand on Damian’s shoulder and looked him in the eye. “Seriously though, mate. You’re not your usual happy days, always laughing, self. What’s wrong?” Damian looked between the two lads. He knew that they weren’t going to let this go. “Okay”, he said. “There’s this girl..” “Shannon?”, Ryan asked. Damian was surprised. Was he really that obvious? “How did you know?”, he asked. Paul laughed. “From what I’ve heard, you’ve been a complete jerk to her. More of a flirt than usual” “I’m actually surprised that Keith and Rebecca haven’t gone off on you yet”, Ryan put in. Damian looked at his shoes. “Well, Keith kind of already has” Ryan and Paul looked at each other. “Listen Damo”, Paul said. “I don’t know what you’re thinking about Shannon, but all this flirting has to stop. And not just with her, with all girls” “It’s not fair to them”, Ryan added. “Look, I know you’re afraid of getting hurt again, but not all girls are like Jennifer” Damian looked down again, it had been so long since he had heard her name. All the other lads had just known that he hadn’t wanted to hear it. And just like that, at the sound of her name, a flood of memories came puoring back into his brain. Jen’s smile, her laugh, her soft hair, they way she would tease him and put up with all his crazy antics… but then she had ended it. Damian may have only been 15, but he had really loved her. And now… “Damian”, Paul’s voice came to him. Damian looked up. “What?” “It’s okay. You’re better off without her. Now, about Shannon….” Right. Shannon. “What about her?”, he asked, knowing the answer. “Well, you came in here all depressed because of a girl. We know this girl is Shannon, so what’s up?” Damian sighed. “I don’t know. I mean, I love being around her, she’s not like other girls. She doesn’t react the same way… and that just makes me want to tease her more. But then I feel bad for treating her that way. I mean, she… I don’t know,” he finished lamely. Paul and Ryan grinned at each other. “Well Damo, you’re not treating her like one of your regular flirts”, Ryan said. “Yea, you’re worse”, Paul added. “And if you love being around her so much, something’s up” Damian nodded, thinking. Paul was right. There was something about this girl... “So, you like her then?”, Ryan asked, although it came out as more of a statement than a question. Damian sighed, “I guess.” He was feeling the same way as he had when he was with Jennifer. And that scared him.

sooooo sorry it took so long!!! stupid college.... anyways.... here's your update!!
“So what are you going to do about it?”, Paul asked. Damian thought for a minute. What should he do about liking her? He liked Shannon, despite all his efforts not to. He knew that he was taking a risk. But thinking about it, about her… “I’m going to ask her out”, Damian said with determination. “How?”, Paul asked. Damian paused. “I’m not sure yet”, he said. He hadn’t gotten that far. “When?”, Ryan added. “I don’t know that yet either”, Damian said in a slightly exasperated voice. “You want some help?”, Paul asked. “I could show you my line book. It’s a tiny book where I have all my usefull pick up lines stored.” “Wait, you have a line book?”, Ryan asked. “Why didn’t you tell me??”, Damian added. “I could have used that!” Paul rolled his eyes. “You were doing just fine on your own, Damo. Flirting around… creeping out all the girls. My old pick up lines are the LAST thing that you need” “It would have come in handy”, Damian muttered to himself. “Seriously though, I’m waiting for the right time to ask her. Just give me time”
The next day, the lads were all at rehearsal and Rebecca and Shannon were watching. Damian was on stage, practicing Standing On The Corner with Haley. “Brother you can’t go to jail for what you’re thinking/ or for that woo look in your eye/ standing on the corner watching all the girls/ watching all the girls, watching all the girls go by”, Damian was singing. It was kind of hard to concentrate on dancing and singing when he knew that Shannon was watching him though. He wondered what she thought of the whole thing. He finished the song and put his arm around Haley for the final note. “Brilliant!”, Belinda, the choreographer called from the floor. “Haley, point your toes a bit more during the second refrain. Okay, Keith! You’re up next!” Keith ran up the steps to the stage and clapped Damian on the shoulder as he passed. “Nice dancin’ mate”, he slagged a bit. “I learned it all from you!”, Damian joked back as he jumped off the stage with Haley and walked over to the girls. “So, what did you think?”, he asked when he got over there. Shannon smiled. “I loved it!” Damian stood in front of her with his hands on his hips. “Really? You didn’t think it was weird?” Shannon shook her head. “Not at all” “You were great, Damo”, Rebecca smiled at him. “Thanks!”, he grinned at her. He looked back at Shannon, making sure she was sincere in her praise. “I’m sure you were havin a laugh though. You see, I can’t dance” Shannon shook her head. “I liked it”, she repeated. “Hey Damian!”, Belinda called. Damian turned around. He knew that whenever Belinda interrupted a rehearsal, it meant that she wanted something. “Yea?”, he called back. “Keith took the last water bottle. Could you please go get 2 more cases for me?” “Sure”, Damian replied. “You wanna help?”, he turned to Shannon. Shannon glanced at Rebecca for a second, then turned back to him. “Alright”, she shrugged and gave him a smile. Damian smiled back and chuckled a bit. “Well, let’s go then”, he led her out the door and down the hall to a small kitchen. “So what do you think of you’re visit so far?”, he asked as he held the door open for her. Shannon flashed her adorable dimples at him in return for opening the door. “I love being here! It’s so exciting, getting to see an actual set and actual rehearsals” Damian grinned. “So we’re not boring you then?” he asked, referring to their first conversation. Shannon laughed, catching the reference. “Of course not! I don’t think I’ve ever been LESS bored!” Damian grinned. “Well I’m glad”, he led the way over to the fridge where the cases of water were kept. “It’s great havin ya here. Makes rehearsals much more interesting. A bit more distracting, maybe, but a lot more interesting”, he handed her a case of water. Shannon took the case, but gave Damian a confused look. “Distracting?” “Well, yea”, he replied. “Knowing that there’s a beautiful girl, only 10 feet away, watching my every move.. it’s only a wee bit distracting”, he winked at her. Shannon blushed and ducked her head a bit. An act that Damian thought was absolutely adorable. “Damian…”, she trailed off. “Shannon…” “You can’t do that”, she said softly. Damian looked at her, confused. “Can’t do what?” “You can’t be so sweet and charming” Damian chuckled, relieved. He had thought that he had actually done something wrong. “And why can’t I?”, he asked, amused now. Shannon looked him in the eye. “Because. You just can’t” “That doesn’t answer my question though…”, Damian said softly. He took the case of water from her hands and set it on the table so she wouldn’t have to hold it while they were talking. “You’re just too charming for your own good”, she smiled grudgingly. Damian rose an eyebrow. “Meaning…?” “Meaning that you’re a flirt, Damian!” “But a very sweet flirt, aye?” Shannon rolled her eyes in a very exasperated manner. Another act that Damian found entransing. “I’m gonna bring this back”, she said as she picked up the case of water to bring back to Belinda. “Shannon”, Damian called when she was about halfway across the room. Shannon paused and then slowly turned around. “Yes?” “Do you wanna hang out sometime? Like, just you and me?” Shannon’s eyes widened the tiniest bit. “You mean on a date?” Damian took a deep breath. He didn’t know where that had come from, but it was a bit late to take it back now… “Yea”

“Damian…”, Shannon said in a slow voice. “I don’t think that going on a date would be the best idea..” Damian’s heart sank in his chest. Of course. Of course, the one time he decided to risk going after a girl again… the one time he had risked getting hurt… he got hurt. She said no. Go flippin figure. “I’m sorry…”, Shannon continued in a soft voice. Damian cleared his throat, trying to seem okay with this. “No, It’s fine. I understand”, he said. “Why though? If you don’t mind my asking…” He didn’t know why he had asked that. He wasn’t even sure if he wanted to know the answer. “You’re sweet Damian. You really are”, Shannon’s face looked sympathetic. “It’s just that you’re too much of a flirt. You’re always flirting with me, Haley, Rebecca, then Haley again… I need someone who’s loyal. I don’t want a boyfriend that flirts around with girls all the time” “What if I changed?”, Damian asked. “What if I stopped flirting with other girls?” Shannon shook her head. “Rebecca told me about how you flirt. CAN you change? And how do I know you won’t change just until I agree to go out with you, then go back to flirting after a while?” Damian shook his head. “That won’t happen, I promise you. Just give me a chance, Shannon. I’ll change. He knew he was almost begging, but he couldn’t help it. Shannon’s eyes looked sad and sparkled with unshed tears. “I’m sorry Damian. I wish I could say yes…” “Then do!” Shannon shook her head again, grabbed the case of water, then walked out the door. Damian stood there for a full minute. She had said no. It wasn’t as if he was surprised or anything, just… not happy. He took the case of water back to the rehearsal area and tried to get back out as quickly and with little interaction with other people as possible. He wandered around the building, looking for Paul. He knew the lad was around here somewhere… he had to rehearse as well… but where was he? He finally found Paul in a room with George, doing something with his new phone. “What are you two doing?”, he asked, walking in and sitting dejectedly in a chair. Paul laughed. “I’m owning George at air hockey!” George didn’t look up. His eyes were concentrating on the little iphone between him and Paul. Damian sat up, semi interested. “George knows how to use an iphone?” Paul laughed again. “Nope! That’s why I’m winning.” Suddenly, he let out a victorious cheer. “Yes! I am the air hockey champ!” George looked up. “Come on, Paul. That’s not even real air hockey. It’s on a tiny screen. Try playing Damo. He’d beat you” Paul turned to Damian and held out the phone. “Wanna try?” Damian shook his head. “Not now… I just asked Shannon out” “Shannon?”, George asked. Paul looked surprised. “Already? I thought you were waiting for the right time” Damian sighed. “Aye, I was. We were getting cases of water from the kitchen and she just looked so cute and I asked her” Paul raised an eyebrow. “In the kitchen? While getting water?” “Yea” Paul let out a puff of air. “Damian, you don’t ask a girl out like that! What were you thinking, lad?” Damian turned to George. “How did you first ask Carrie out?” George smiled. “It was after one of my performances at Jinty’s. We had been friends and I asked her to come see me sing. I asked her afterward. But don’t feel bad, Damo. The location shouldn’t matter. What did she say?” “That I was too much of a flirt”, Damian said, looking at the floor. Paul coughed. “Well, you are that, mate” For some reason, Paul wasn’t making Damian feel better about any of this. George put a hand on Damian’s shoulder and looked him in the eye. “Damian, do you like this girl?” Damian nodded. “Aye” “A lot?” “yea…” George smiled and pointed a finger at Damian, his hand still on his shoulder. “Then you need to shape up, lad. I know ye like girls, but they like a lad that pays attention to them. Just stop flirting around, show Shannon that you care. She’ll come around” Damian smiled. He loved George’s fatherly advice. He trusted it, even if it didn’t always make sense. But it made perfect sense this time.

As it turned out, not flirting was harder than it sounded. Damian wondered if that made him a jerk, or something worse. But honestly, it was just a habit. It was a habit that he didn’t even think about. Winking at girls when they looked at him, complimenting them… So over the next few days, when he didn’t flirt at times when he previously would have, he noticed some odd looks being directed his way. Not from the other lads, they knew his plan, but from the crew and the girls. It was one of those, why are you acting so differently, kind of looks. Damian hadn’t tried to talk to Shannon again. Well, of course he talked to her, but not privately. He didn’t try to confront her to ask her out again. He wanted to show her that he could stop flirting. But then again, what was he doing?? He didn’t want to get involved in a girl again. At least that’s what his brain was telling him. His heart, however, was telling him to do whatever it took to get Shannon to listen to him. He needed to talk to someone. More specifically, he needed to talk to Rebecca. Damian found Rebecca in her hotel room, checking her myspace on her laptop. Shannon was off with Haley, learning some dance steps, so Rebecca was alone. Thankfully. Rebecca looked up from her laptop and smiled. “Hey Damo!” “Hey Rebecca”, Damian went in and sat on the edge of the bed. “Uhh… I need a favor” Rebecca raised her eyebrows in a way that was too much like her brother’s. “When you say ‘favor’ you really mean you want me to convince Shannon to go out with you, right?” Damian took a deep breath. “Not really. I just want to talk to her. Get to know her a bit better” “She told me about that day in the kitchen, Damian”, Rebecca said. “About how you asked her out and she said no” “It would only be as friends”, Damian assured her. “I only want to get to know her better as a friend.” Rebecca sighed and put her laptop aside. “I’m not going to give you her number, Damo. What kind of friend would I be if I did?” Damian looked down at the carpet, knowing that she was right. He looked back up after about a full minute of silence. “I love her, Rebecca. Maybe I shouldn’t, but I do. I’ve tried my best to stop being a jerk and a flirt to everyone, what else am I supposed to do? What should I do to get her to trust me?” Rebecca thought for a minute. “Just talk to her, Damo”, she said in a soft voice. “Keep showing her that it’s her you want. That’s all I can really tell ya” Damian nodded, doing some thinking of his own. “Thanks, Rebecca”, he finally said, smiling at her. Rebecca smiled back. “You’re welcome. Good luck” Damian left the room, his brain working overtime. What was he supposed to do? How could he talk to her without her thinking he was hitting on her? He decided to get out his guitar and play a bit while thinking. Playing his guitar was something that could always relax Damian when he was confused or stressed. He would play a bit and let his mind clear. Damian started to play a very simple tune and the guitar music attracted Keith. This attracted Neil, which attracted Ryan, and pretty soon, there was an all out jam session going on. Even Ruth and Joyce showed up with their violins. At one point, Damian felt someone looking at him. And when he looked up, it was only to meet the deep blue eyes of Shannon.

Damian smiled back at Shannon, then turned away. He didn’t want her thinking the wrong thing. He turned back to focus on the song and joined in the cheers when it ended. “Yeeehooo!”, Keith’s signature cher could be heard distinctly. “What song should we sing now?”, Ryan asked, strumming his guitar in eagerness. “I wanna hear Keith and Damian’s song”, Rebecca requested. Keith looked up at her. “Huh?” “Keith hasn’t played that one for you yet?”, Damian asked, surprised. Rebecca shook her head. “He hasn’t had a chance to play it for me” Neil looked between the two lads. “You two wrote a song?” Keith chuckled. “Well, it’s really Damo’s song. I only helped a bit” Damian laughed. “Oh no! You’re not pinning that on me! We both wrote it” “What’s wrong with pinning it on you?”, Keith asked. “That was, if it’s a horrible mess, I don’t have to take all the credit”, Damian laughed again. “I’m sure it’s great”, Rebecca said impatiently. “Let’s hear it” Keith looked at Damian. “You wanna give it a go?” Damian hesitated. It was bad enough to sing and dance Standing On The Corner in front of Shannon and that wasn’t even his song! It was a cover that someone else had wrote. But to sing and play one of his own compositions? One that had never been played in public before? But everyone was looking at him expectantly… how could he say no? “Aye”, he nodded. “You ready?” Keith grinned. “Whenever you are, Little Bro” Damian couldn’t help but grin back at Keith as he strummed the opening chords. “It’s called, ‘Faith’”, he announced to anyone who might not know. He tried not to think of that ‘anyone’ as being mainly Shannon. He sang the opening verse, trying to forget his audience, just concentrating on the words. And when Keith came in in harmony, Damian knew they were nailing it. He put all he could into the song, loving being able to play it again. Playing it brought back so many memories. Memories of the long bus rides and of Keith randomly running up to him backstage, in the middle of a show, with lyric ideas. Damian looked over at Keith as his mate sang the last verse by himself, feeling a great sense of contentment. He knew that everything would work out. And that’s what the song was about, having Faith. Together, they sang the last refrain and ended the song perfectly. The room was silent for a second, then burst into applause. The other lads were grinning, having already heard the song, but Damian looked past them. He looked to the girl he loved, knowing that her opinion was the only one that mattered. And that girl was beaming back at him, clapping with the others. “That was amazing”, Ruth finally said. Rebecca nodded. “Another hit. I love it!” “I tink you two should record that one”, Neil said. Damian laughed. “You really think it’s that good?” “I think it is”, Shannon spoke up, smiling. Damian looked at her. “Really?” Shannon nodded. “I think it’s great!” Damian grinned back at her, knowing that whatever resistance he might have had about getting into a relationship was now long gone. He was willing to risk getting hurt for this girl. He was willing to risk anything, actually. Damian then got up, and left the group for a minute to get a drink. And to clear his head. He was still going to keep his distance for a bit, he couldn’t be acting like a love sick puppy. He had to keep his cool. For how long, Damian didn’t know. But he knew that he was willing to wait.

Damian looked both ways as he stepped off the corner and into the street. Across the street was a bridge that he liked to look over, the bridge where he did all his thinking. It over looked a small stream and watching the moving water seemed to put Damian in a trans of sorts. Kind of like watching the flames of a fire. It was a small street, so it wasn’t too busy, but the occasional passerby did come along. Damian was thinking about Shannon. Again. It seemed as if most of his thinking was centered on her lately. He wanted to ask her out again, or try to get her number like he was talking to Rebecca about. But how? Had he given her enough time? All these thoughts were swirling around in his head when he heard a voice. “Hey, I like your shirt” Damian turned and saw that a pretty, but overdone, blonde girl had come up next to him. Usually, Damian would have flirted back at this point. He could feel a come- back burning on his lips, but he pushed those words aside. No more flirting. Besides, he didn’t really want this girl anyway. He had Shannon. Well, he was TRYING to have Shannon. She was a million times better than this girl anyway, Damian thought as he took in the girl’s forward outfit and dark makeup. “Thanks”, he responded simply and turned back to the water. The girl stepped closer and held out her hand. “I’m Marissa” “Damian”, he nodded, ignoring the hand. Marissa gave him a smile. “I’m from America and don’t know the city very well… do you think you could show me around?” Damian looked at her and shook his head. “Sorry. I’m on a very tight schedule and can’t really-“ “I’m sure you could find time. You look like a very good tour guide…” Damian couldn’t believe this girl. Had he been this bad? She was close enough that if she got any closer he could touch her. But Damian didn’t want to touch her. “Sorry, you’ll have to find someone else”, he said. “I’ve got to go.” He turned around and came face to face with Shannon. He felt both overjoyed to see her and worried at the same time. How much did she hear? Did she think that he had been coming on to Marissa? After he had done his best to convince here that he would stop, that would not be good. At all. “Shannon. That wasn’t what it looked like. I promised that I would stop hitting on girls and I have. SHE came up to ME. Seriously. I tried to get rid of her… what are you doing here?”, he paused in his rambling to ask. “I was taking a walk”, Shannon replied with no expression. “And I wanted to tell you that I liked your song” “Oh. Well, thanks. And I promise I didn’t do anything.”, Damian continued. “I wouldn’t want to hit on her anyway. She’s too shallow looking. I mean, that and I’d rather have you. I mean, I love you. She’s just a random girl that I don’t care about-“ “Damian”, Shannon interrupted. Damian stopped talking. “I saw what happened”, Shannon said softly. “I saw you trying to get rid of her” Damian sighed with relief. “Okay, good” Shannon stepped closer. “But I have one question…” “Anything” Shannon looked down at the ground for a second, then looked back into his eyes. She seemed nervous for some reason… but what did she have to be nervous about? This was all on him. “Do you really love me?”, she asked softly. Damian let the breath he had been holding in a soft laugh. That’s what she had been worried about? “Of course I do”, he said. “More than anything” Shannon seemed to be arguing with herself in her mind about something. “What’s wrong?”, he asked, putting a hand on her shoulder without thinking. Shannon looked at his hand and Damian dropped it, afraid that he overstepped the line. “How can you be so sweet now?”, she burst out suddenly. “How can you be so caring now when you were such a creeper before?” Damian paused, wondering if he should tell her. “Because of you”, he finally said. “Me?” Damian nodded. “About 2 years ago, I had a girlfriend that I liked very much. But then she broke up with me. Over a text, while I was on tour. She said she couldn’t handle it. Me being away, all the screaming fans, how I never had time… it kinda made me hate relationships. I knew that she was right and every other girl was going to think the same way. So I kept me dates short, never going in for another serious relationship. And I became the creeper- slash- flirt, as you saw.” Shannon nodded, her face sad and sympathetic. “But then I met you”, he continued. “And I didn’t want that life anymore. I tried not to like you, but I just couldn’t help meself. And when I found that the only way to be close to you was to shape up, I tried my best. I love you, Shannon. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for you. Just say the word. Now, all that being said… why do you ask?” Shannon smiled the tiniest bit, her dimples showing. “Because I think I love you too” Damian’s face went flat and he just looked at her. “Are you for serious?” Shannon nodded, he grin widening. And Damian knew, that in that moment, he was the happiest man alive. He moved forward and wrapped his arms around her slender body. “Can I kiss you now?”, he asked after a few minutes, whispering the request into her coconut smelling hair. Shannon pulled back a little with a mischievious grin on her face. The only answer she gave was to press her lips to his.
The End
