The cars pulled up to the chapel. Kristine wasn’t surprised to see the same little chapel she remembered. It looked older but very much the same, even the abundance of flowers someone had planted outside. Ivy had grown along the walls and almost covered the exterior. It was beautiful. Keith stood outside the door waiting for them.
“Well now.” He smiled. “Aren’t ye the prettiest bride! I knew I shooulda grabbed you up before Ryan took ye away.”
“You snooze…you lose. Now you’ll just have to settle for the second prettiest. “ Kristine hugged him. “Is he here?”
“He’s here and worried ye wouldn’t be here. He’s been frettin…so’s I told him, I’d come out here and wait for ye.” Keith hugged her back.
“Well go tell them to start the music…I’m here and ready to get married.” Kristine said.
“Aye…I’ll do that.” He gave her one of his dimpled smiles and entered the church.
Everyone hugged Kristine and went into the chapel, leaving Kristine and her dad.
Kristine turned and looked out into the Irish countryside.
Her dad stood beside her and put his arm around her.
“So, baby. Are you ready?”
“Have you ever felt that you’re living a dream…and you’re so happy…and you’re afraid you’re going to wake up and it will be gone?” Kristine asked her dad.
“I know that you are real…and Ryan is real…and this is a real wedding that’s going to take place. You and Ryan are going for the” happy ever after”. And I know you’re going to get that happy ever after.”
“Well then…I guess I’m ready…bring on my “happy ever after”!!!” Kristine smiled at her dad.
“There’s my girl.” He gave her a quick hug and walked her through the door.
Kristine looked around. The chapel was filled with flowers. She heard a flute playing a tune and standing at the altar was her Ryan, dark and handsome, dancing green eyes and a huge smile. Next to Ryan stood Paul, with a big silly grin on his face. All the rest of the lads were lined up after Paul. Meagan and Teresa stood at the other side of the altar, big smiles on their faces too. Kristine walked up to Ryan. He grabbed her hand and smiled into her eyes.
The ceremony seemed to fly by. They said their vows and before Kristine knew it, Ryan was kissing her and twirling her around happily.
Ryan turned to their friends and family.
“You are all invited to the reception. If you would all follow us, I have a surprise for my new bride.”
He grabbed Kristine’s hand and led her out of the chapel. By now, Kristine pretty much figured out what the surprise was. Sure enough, he led her down the lane toward their old cottage. When they approached it, Kristine noticed the dance floor set up and the band equipment sitting next to it. Workers were busy setting out food on long tables. There were several tables set up to sit at. Kristine thought it looked wonderful. The lads did a great job.
“Who owns this cottage now? Don’t the owners care that were having a reception here?” she asked Ryan.
“Actually she doesn’t mind at all. The owner is you. I found this place 10 years ago and bought it. After we became engaged, I put the deed in your name. This is your cottage.”
“Ryan!!! Oh my God!!! I don’t know what to say! Can I go see it?” Kristine walked toward the front door.
“Let’s go.” He told everyone they would be right back and they walked in the house.
Ryan opened the door of the cottage. Kristine walked inside and a fresh sense of remembering flooded her. Their cottage. Not exactly the same as she remembered. There was newness to it, a fully loaded kitchen, flooring, curtains. But the essence was there. The fireplace, the fireplace she’d cooked their dinners on. The fireplace where Shannon’s cradle used to sit by. Looking old and blackened….she walked to it.
“I remember it as if it was yesterday.” She looked around with tears in her eyes, her arms wrapped around herself.
Ryan walked behind her and wrapped his arms around her and whispered in her ear.
“We have a second chance here. We can start right now…right here…build a wonderful life..just you and me.”
She turned toward him and looked into his eyes.
“Yes..Ryan.”
He pulled her to him and kissed her.
“Well Mrs. Kelly…let’s go out and begin our new life.”
