Keith realized what position he was in just milliseconds after Abby walked in the door. He was laying on the floor, with out a shirt on, with Claire on top of him, with their faces not even a fingers width apart. Crap.
Abby didn’t say anything. Tears filled her eyes as she took in the scene in front of her.
“Abby”, Keith pushed Claire off and stood up, quickly walking over to the woman he loved. “Abby, that wasn’t what it looked like.”, he started to reach for her arm.
Abby held up a hand. “D- don’t…. touch me”, she said in a low, shakey voice.
Keith respectefully backed off, but his heart was breaking inside. He had to explain. She had to know the truth.
“Abby”, he pleaded. Abby shook her head, tears falling silently down her beautiful face. Keith literally ached with the need to go to her, to comfort her. But he knew that trying to touch her again was NOT the best idea at the moment.
“Please let me explain”, he begged.
“You said that you loved me!”, Abby pointed a finger at him.
Keith was speechless. How could she- how- how could that thought even enter her mind?? “Abby, I DO love you!”, he reached his arms out to her.
Abby looked between Keith and Claire. “Really? You have a funny way of showing it!”
Claire took a step forward. “Abby, it really wasn’t-“
Abby turned on Claire. “Don’t even start! You really think I want to listen to you right now?”
Claire’s eyes filled with tears as well. “Abby, please listen”
Abby ignored her and turned back to glare at Keith.
Claire stood still for a second, then quickly slipped out the door. Keith didn’t try to stop her. Right now, he had to explain everything to Abby. She was his top priority.
“Abby… Sweetheart…”, he took a step toward her.
“No!”, Abby yelled.
“I love you”, Keith tried to reassure her.
Abby shook her head. “Don’t lie to me Keith”
“I was going to propose to you!”, Keith exclaimed. That threw her for a second. Abby paused and a softer expression lit her eyes for a second. But then she shook her head again.
“I love you”, Keith repeated.
“How can you say that? After what I just saw?”, Abby pointed to the floor where they had fallen.
This time, Keith DID go to Abby and wrapped his arms around her. He didn’t care that she struggled at first, she needed to know that he cared. “How can you doubt me?”, he asked softly in her ear. “After all the times I’ve told you… after all the times I’ve shown you?”
“All I know”, Abby said in a broken voice. “Is that I walked in the door and saw you laying on the floor, holding another woman. And you’re half naked at that!”, she pulled away from him.
“But- I- If you would just let me explain!”
“Please leave, Keith”, Abby whispered.
“Nooo…..”, Keith groaned. “You have to listen to me”
Abby started crying again. “Just go”
Keith didn’t know what to do. He couldn’t ‘just go’. Not when she was upset with him. But he didn’t know what else to do. And then there was the fact that he had felt something when his lips were inches away from Claire’s. He couldn’t deny that. He was so confused. Of course he loved Abby, but then why was part of him still with Claire? Keith wanted to sit down with Abby and force her to listen. But he couldn’t do that when he, himself, wasn’t sure of what he wanted.
So even though he hated himself for leaving, because to him, leaving seemed to be admitting that he didn’t love her, Keith silently walked to the door. But before he left, he looked back at Abby.
“I love you”, he said firmly. “I will always love you. And I would never do anything to hurt you.” And with that, he walked out the door.
