Meagan soon found out there wasn’t really anything to do on the day of the show. Everything was set to go. People just milled around talking and laughing. Some warmed their voices up and some warmed up on their instruments. Paul kept bugging her, trying to find out where her mother had gone. Meagan kept telling him, she didn’t know but knew she went to get Paul’s surprise. He was like a big kid right before Christmas. Damian and Keith decided to go and work on “Old Spotty” to make sure it was going to work for the show. Meagan decided to tag along and watch. So did little Fiona, Keith’s little sweetheart. They turned on the spotlight and it seemed to work fine. Meagan saw Fiona reach out and touch it lightly. The spotlight immediately shut off. Fiona giggled and disappeared.
“Hey …uh…guys? I think I know what’s wrong with “Spotty”” Meagan said.
“Yeah? Well I know what’s wrong with it too….it’s a piece of crap!” Keith said.
“Yeah well…did I ever explain to you about how electrical things can go haywire around ghosts?” Meagan told them.
“No…I believe that’s one detail that was missed. What’s up Meagan?” Damian asked.
“Well…I think the spotlight is being sabotaged by Fiona. I just saw her touch it, and it shut off.”
“That little stinker!” Keith laughed. “I’ll go find her and explain things to her.” He took off and left Meagan and Damian.
“Well…I guess we’re alone…wanna make-out or something?” Damian asked smiling grabbing her and pulling her in.
“I don’t know, I might have to wash my hair or get a pedicure or something.” Meagan hesitated. “Well…ok...looks like I don’t have anything better to do.” She grinned up and him. Damian smiled pulled her close and started kissing her. He pulled away and looked down at her.
“Meagan…..” He looked like he wanted to say something.
Say it. Ask me to stay!! Meagan thought to herself. But still he didn’t say anything. He just shook his head and kissed her again.
“Let’s head back down. We have to do a soundcheck and then get something to eat before showtime.” He grabbed her hand and they headed back to the stage area.
Finally!!! One hour before showtime. Meagan dressed in her emerald dress stood in the lobby and welcomed the people coming to the show. There were no tickets so people could sit wherever they liked. The first rows had been roped off for VIPs and of course the ghost audience. Damian had introduced his family to Meagan when they arrived. His Mom and Dad, his brother and sister and his grandma and grandda were all there. Some of his friends showed up too. She saw her mother across the lobby talking to Paul. And Paul looked to be stunned. Standing next to her mother was the famous Italian Tenor, Andrea Bocelli! Meagan ran over there.
“Mom! What have you done!” Meagan whispered in her Mom’s ear.
“Meagan! Andrea, this is my beautiful daughter, Meagan. Meagan, Andrea Bocelli. He’s a singer…” Her mom introduced them.
“Mom! I know who Andrea Bocelli is. It’s very nice to meet you sir. What brought you to this little theater in Ireland?” Meagan asked politely.
“I met your mother in Italy at the opera house. Of course I was enchanted! I wanted her to stay and hear me sing but she says…”No, I have to go and hear my favorite tenor sing.” I say to her “What! I am not your favorite tenor?” and she says to me “No..my favorite tenor is in Ireland” And so I come to see who can sing so good that he can replace me in my angel’s heart. Perhaps I would like for him to sing with me at the opera house as my special guest.” Explained Mr Bocelli.
“I’m so very glad you came. I have a very special seat just for you, right next to my mother.” Meagan told him.
Paul was still looking stunned. Meagan leaned over and whispered in his ear. “Looks like the pressures on big guy. Better sing like ya mean it.” She teased.
Finally the first strains of music started and everyone was seated. Meagan stood backstage and watched the show. Everything was going perfectly. The audience seemed to be enjoying the show, even the ghost performers, which was impossible since they couldn’t even see them. The night seemed magical. That thought stuck in her head….magical…magical…she looked out into the audience. Sean and Maura were singing their duet on stage. She looked out at the audience again. They seemed to be watching the stage…like they could see and hear the song. Meagan moved down the side and walked up an aisle. She saw Mrs McGinty seated at the end of the aisle.
“So. How do you like the show so far?” she knelt down and whispered.
“It’s so wonderful. Who is this couple singing now? They are amazing!” His mom said.
Meagan told her she would tell her later..said her goodbyes and moved backstage again. She motioned Damian over.
“You are not going to believe this!” Meagan whispered. “It’s a miracle or something!”
“What! “ Damian asked
“They can see the ghosts! The audience can see and hear the ghosts! I don’t know what’s going on but it’s some kind of miracle!” Meagan said excitedly.
“Whoa…I guess you’re right. I was standing here watching them and didn’t even realize it.” They looked around and all the lads were watching the pair onstage, fascinated since they had never seen them before.
Keith and Fiona were up next. Keith had written a beautiful song for Fiona. He stood on the stage and sang while she floated and danced around him. You could see the affection and the love they had for each other, the surfer and the little girl ghost. Meagan shook her head. She would never have believed it if she didn’t see it with her own eyes.
The show went on…”Danny Boy”, “The Old Man” and “The Green Fields of France”. Next up was her and Damian’s song. Meagan’s stomach was doing somersaults. Curtains closed. Audience clapping. Oh dear Lord…why was she doing this? Next thing she knew, Damian was leading her out on stage.
“Just look in my eyes…forget the audience.” He whispered to her. Spotlight on. Kristine started to play. Damian first. Oh God Oh God…I can’t do this! Her turn. She started out shaky at first. Her voice kind of quivery. Then she looked into his eyes. He was looking at her with so much love and holding her hand so tightly. Her voice grew stronger. Before she knew it the song was over and everyone was clapping. The pair smiled at each other and hugged then turned and took a bow. Then Damian put out his hands to quiet the audience down. The curtains behind them opened up. There was a wall of roses behind her. Meagan turned and stared at Damian.
“I just want to tell Meagan something ,before all of you, that I have been wanting to say for a long time.” He turned toward Meagan. “Meagan, I love you. I have loved you almost since the minute I met you. I have never been surer than I am right now that I want you in my life forever.” The theater was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. In fact Meagan heard a little ping and a roll. Damian and Meagan both looked down. Rolling toward them and landing at their feet was Maura’s wedding claddaugh ring. Meagan looked over to Maura. She had tears in her eyes and she nodded yes. Damian got down on one knee and picked up the ring. He looked up at Meagan. “Meagan. Would you consider staying here in Ireland and being my wife? Will you marry me, Meagan?”
Meagan had happy tears running down her face. “Yes. Yes..of course I’ll marry you.”
Damian smiled and put the ring on her finger. Heart faced inward. They kissed and everyone stood and clapped. There were whistles and whooo hooo’s. Damian picked her up and whirled her around. Meagan had never been so happy.
• They walked to the side…finale time. Paul stood center stage, spotlight on him. The finale song was “Let There be Peace on Earth”. Paul sang the first verse, accapela. The rest of the lads joined him on the second verse. The third time through everyone joined. It was very moving and brought the audience to their feet.
Suddenly the show was over, everyone was taking their bows. Damian and Meagan got an extra loud cheer. Afterwards everyone went backstage to congratulate everyone else. Suddenly there was a very bright light shining.
“Whoa…who’s playing with the spotlight?” Damian said.
“Shhh Damian…that’s not the spotlight…that’s God’s light.” Meagan said reverently.
She could see the light! Already some of the ghosts were walking toward it.
Meagan’s mom walked over to them. “I’ve never seen it! The light. I’ve never actually seen it before. Isn’t it beautiful!”
Barry Fitzmauris came to say goodbye. “Well…you lads did fine. It was the best show I’ve ever directed. Thank you, all of you for helping me.” He turned toward the light. “There’s Mari! I’m coming my love.” He walked into the light
Sean and Maura walked up to them. “It looks like it’s time for us to go.” Maura said. “I just want to thank you for everything you did for us.”
“I’m glad everything worked out. Thank you for the ring.” Damian told her.
“It seemed to belong to you.” Maura said. She turned to Fiona. “Fiona, time to go.”
Fiona was standing next to Keith. “Will you sing me a song before I go?” she asked him.
“Sure. “ He picked up his guitar.
“Confess, your kiss still knocks me off my legs.
The first time I saw you was like a punch right through my chest
I will forever, ‘cause you’ll forever be
My one true broken heart, pieces inside of me and you’ll forever, my baby be.
You will rest your head, your strength once saving.
And when you wake you will fly away,
Holding tight to the legs of all your angels.
Goodbye my love, into your blue, blue eyes,
Your blue, blue world, you’re my baby blue.”
Fiona kissed Keith’s cheek. “You’re my “forever love” she said and laid her hand on his cheek. By then everybody’s eyes were full of tears. Keith smiled at her. “Yes, Fiona…you’re my “forever love” too.”
“Come Fiona, it’s time to go now.” Maura told her. Fiona walked over and held each of her mom and dad’s hand. Together they walked into the light.
The light blinked out. All the ghosts had moved to the other side.
Meagan’s mom turned to her. “Well I guess you’ll be staying here then.”
“Yes, sorry I can’t go to Paris with you.” Meagan said
“Oh…I’ve decided to take a 2 week holiday in Dublin.” She said smiling. “Then maybe a visit back to Italy. Andrea invited Paul to sing at the opera house. I better make sure there are no lingering ghosts, huh?”
“Mom! Your terrible! When did you decide this?” Meagan asked.
“Hmmm…I guess tonight.” She turned and looked at Paul. He smiled back.
The theater seemed so empty after everyone left. Damian and Meagan locked it up and walked home. At the door of the bed and breakfast they turned toward each other.
“So you going to be my “forever love” too?” Damian asked.
“Well depends…does it come with a lifetime of Meet and Greet tickets at every concert I go to?” Meagan asked smiling.
“Now you know that I have no control over those. That’s a PBS thing. But I can guarantee you a meet and greet with that gorgeous, handsome, sexy, adorable young singer, Damian McGinty, every day, for the rest of your life.” He smiled.
“Well now…can’t beat a deal like that.” She smiled back.
“Smart mouth…always the smart mouth.” He pulled her close and kissed her.
“Yes…You’re my forever love.”
