****Inspired by the song "It Ain't Pretty" by Lady Antebellum. More to come, comments are always welcome ****Had a feeling I was feeling all right, and it just happened to be Saturday nightIt was Saturday night and Saturday nights were spent out. But that hadn't been her Saturday night for weeks now. Her nights had been spent curled up under a blanket on the couch, the only company a pint of Ben and Jerry's and one of two types of movies; romantic comedy or a heart breaking drama. This Saturday was different though, she felt different. She felt, all right, if that was even a viable feeling. She straightened her chocolate brown hair that was usually a tumble of confused waves and curls, and donned a black, sleeveless dress. She pulled a pair of heels from the back of the closet and dusted them off; it had been that long since she'd worn them. Looking in the mirror, she applied a final coat of lipstick. Red like the models in the commercials wore, a color that she had never dared to try. Now seemed like a good time though, if ever there was going to be a good time. Grabbing her essentials such as ID, money, keys and her courage, she took a deep breath. The sweet ocean air of Santa Monica poured through the open windows of the small, green Fiat she drove. She found the small bar that she had been looking for and pulled into a vacant spot. Another deep breath and she climbed out, locking the doors and making her way inside. She slipped to the back of the bar and ordered a drink. Taking the fruity cocktail to a corner booth she watched as people smiled and laughed. Talking and enjoying themselves, she picked at the corners of the napkin as she pulled out her cell phone. Scrolling through the names and figuring who, if anyone she wanted to call.

Found my way to the bathroom mirror, standing next to some girl spilling beer. She didn't notice I was drying my tears."
She escaped the music and laughter in the bathroom; staring at her hazel eyes as mascara began to pool at the corners. She dabbed them quickly and looked to the girl next to her. Overly bleached hair and blue eyes that were already glazed with too much drink. The beer she held sloshed over the side and into the sink as the girl giggled.
She looked back at her own mirror with a shake of her head. Why did she come here? Who was she fooling? Her heart wasn't into the evening and it was difficult watching the other couples. The smiles and laughter, stolen kisses; it hurt to watch. She sighed and attempted to pull herself together. She washed her hands and checked her make up. Squaring her shoulders she opened the door, not looking and was met by a solid mass.
"Sorry", she mumbled quickly.
"Quite all right", came the lilted response,"Don't mind running into someone so lovely."
"Right", she laughed as she looked up into a pair of vivid blue eyes that were slightly covered with disheveled blonde hair,"I should go."
"Can I buy you a drink?", he jerked a thumb towards the bar.
"No, really, it's fine", she waved him off.
"It's the least you could let me do", he crossed his arms.
She bit her lip and smiled,"Fine, one drink."
"After you", he held out an arm, allowing her to pass. He followed her to the booth and a waitress soon came over to take their orders.
"I didn't get your name", she said over the music, sipping on the appletini.
"Keith and yours?"
"Ariel."
"Nice to meet you, Ariel", he sat straighter,"Why is a pretty girl at a bar alone on a Saturday night?"
She shrugged and stirred her drink,"Don't know, thought I would get out of the house. Probably not the best idea."
"Sure it was! Why not, it's Santa Monica after all."

Cause I just kissed a boy & I barely even know his name. I let him take me by the hand, pull me close while our old song played.
Glasses sat empty between them as they talked. New ones had been brought as the bar had become busier in the later hour. People were up and dancing, something not typically seen any more, but this place was different.
Ariel watched as couples turned and spun on the floor, their laughter almost contagious. There was an inner pang that struck and then vanished as Keith touched her hand.
"How about a spin?"
"What?", she shook her head.
"Out there, on the floor. I believe it's called dancing."
"I'm really terrible at it."
"You've had a few, so I'm sure you can't be that bad."
"You asked for it", she laughed taking his out stretched hand. They weaved their way to the make shift dance floor and joined the other couples.
"See, not so bad", Keith grinned as they moved to the slow pace.
"Guess you're lucky then", she smiled up into the blue eyes,"What is a guy from Ireland doing in California?"
"Music", he answered spinning her away from him and then pulling her back,"Working on a second album and wanted to do some writing away from everything."
"What do you write about?"
"What ever I feel", he shrugged,"I may even write a song about tonight."
She couldn't help but laugh,"And what would that be like?"
"Something about meeting a pretty girl named Ariel, all alone in a bar. Sharing a dance and waiting on a kiss", he winked,"You know stuff like that."
"Sounds like a hit", she said with a nod as the song changed. Her body stiffened as she heard the opening chords.
"What?", he looked down at her.
"Nothing", she tried to relax,"Just the song."
"Can I guess?", he pulled her closer against him.
"Guess what?"
"You obviously don't like the song, so can I guess why?"
"No", she leaned her head against his shoulder willing the tears away.
"Someone hurt you, didn't they?", he said close to her ear.
She turned her head and his face was closer than she realized,"I don't want to talk about it."
"That's fine", he stroked a thumb across her cheek as he lowered his lips to hers.
She began to lose herself in the moment and pulled away almost as quickly,"I'm sorry."
"No", he shook his head,"I am, I shouldn't have."
"If you want to settle the tab", she pulled money out of her clutch.
"No, I'll take care of it", he folded the money back into her hand,"We can go outside for some fresh air."
"Sure", she nodded as she watched him walk away. Once he was out of site she dug out her phone and called for a cab. Slipping off her high heels she went quickly to the entrance and gulped the fresh, late night air. She kept an eye trained on the door as she waited for the taxi to arrive.

I almost dialed your number, to remind you what you did. I think it might be better, to just let this night end.
Ariel looked at her phone as the taxi drove through the darkened streets. His number and photo, the one who had broken her heart stared back at her in the harsh light of the phone. She sighed and turned the screen off, calling him would do no good. It had been nearly two months and they hadn't spoken to each other. Why should that change now?
She felt the mascara stream down her cheeks as she paid the driver and climbed out into the rain that had started to fall. She felt pathetic and lonely as she climbed the stairs to her apartment. She unlocked the door, dropping her shoes and heading for the bathroom. Maybe a hot shower and getting under the covers would help heal the mess of emotions that had started to over flow.
***************************************************
Keith stretched out on the deck of the boat with sunglasses over his eyes. He had tried making sense of the night before, but nothing came together. One moment Ariel had been telling him to settle their tab and the next she was gone, as if she had vanished into thin air. What did he expect? He had been the moron to kiss her, but he knew he wouldn' t have taken that brief moment back for anything.
He wondered if he could draw out a song from their short time together. Her face was definitely one that would stay with him; hazel eyes framed by dark hair, lips that had been painted red. The color wasn't her, she had obviously stepped out of a comfort zone by wearing it. He bolted up right and grabbed the pen and notebook that sat close by. Lyrics formed in his mind as he scribbled and scratched out ideas.

Ariel pulled her hair away from her face as her phone rang,"Hello?", she answered squeezing toothpaste onto her toothbrush.
"Hey, it's Zac", came her friend's voice.
"Hey you!", she said happily,"It's early, what's going on?"
"Kate and I were going to take the boat out today, thought you might want to come along."
"That sounds fun. I was just going to run to the office to check on a few things."
"On a Sunday?"
"I know, I know", she sighed.
"Be ready in an hour, we'll swing by to get you."
"But.....", she stopped as he cut her off.
"No excuses!", he said with a laugh,"You'd better be in a bathing suit and shorts with in an hour."
"Fine, if you're going to make me."
"I absolutely am. See you soon!"
"Bye, Zac", she ended the call and finished brushing her teeth. She did feel better after a full night's sleep and eating something more substantial than a cereal bar. She made her bed and packed a bag for the day.
She thought of Keith as she opened her lap top. She had no plans of seeing him again and figured that a little Google searching couldn't hurt anything. Her eyes went wide as the search engine popped up with his website, the group's website, youtube, facebook, and more. She watched videos and listened to his original songs, his voice was stunning. Folk mixed with rock and even a meloncholy ballad here and there.
She jumped as she heard the car horn. Closing the lap top and pushing Keith away from her mind, she grabbed her bag and headed downstairs.
