"Your mom's in the kitchen making lunch" Edward led them towards the back of the house.
Emmet almost did a double take at the large white kitchen and adjoining dinging nook. The double french doors led out to a pool and screened in patio. This was something he had definitely never seen before and was very surprised that Ronnie hadn't mentioned how she was raised.
"Veronica!", said a woman with salt and pepper hair. He eyes were the same caramel as Ronnie's.
"Hey, mom", she hugged her,"Mom, this is Emmet Cahill."
"Welcome!", she hugged him,"I'm Edith."
"Nice to meet you", he said as she pulled back,"Your home is beautiful."
"Thank you", she beamed,"Veronica, why don't you two go upstairs and get freshened up. Austin is in the play room."
The two made their way upstairs to the bedrooms,"You get the guest room and I will be in my old room."
"Separate rooms", he winked.
"Stop", she laughed,"I don't want to give my parents anything to grill me on. Plus with Austin."
"I know, love, I know. I was only joking."
She showed him the guest room and then went to her own room. Emmet looked out the window over the large expanse or property that led down to a boat dock on the water way. A boat bobbed lazily in the current and the reeds on the shore swayed in time like a wave. It was beautiful and part of it made him long for home.

Emmet wandered back downstairs looking over the photos that hung on the wall. They were all of Ronnie and then her with friends or with her parents. He had never thought to ask if she had any siblings, but it was evident from the photos that she was an only child. He noticed the ones of Ronnie and Austin, they began from they day he was born, he couldn't help but smile at the young new mother holding the squalling child. Austin had his mother's eyes and the same sweet, easy smile.
She had become a mother at such a young age, but had prevailed none the less. Not becoming a statistic, but staying on her path. He had respect for that idea, but he knew she missed her son terribly. She had become more open about him and he enjoyed listening to her talk to him on the phone. It was a different side than the woman he had first met over a month ago.
"Lunch is ready", Ronnie said as she wiped her hands on a towel,"You found the wall."
"Yes, I did", he grinned,"You're quite photogenic."
"That's what happens when you're an only child."
"I tried not to be that way with Austin but........... you can see that didn't work out too well."
"You're a mom, it's endearing", he kissed her cheek as they went into the dining area.
"My mother cooked for an army, so I hope you're hungry."
"I'm Irish, half our time is spent eating."
"Figures", she laughed as they joined Edith, Edward, and Austin who were already seated.
"Emmet, help yourself", Edith said passing him a tray of hamburger patties.
"Thank you", he replied.
"So, Ronnie said you're from Ireland", Edward said fixing his own plate.
"I am, yes. I moved over after university."
The next hour was filled with questions from Edward and a few from Edith. Emmet answered everything obligingly and knew they only wanted to know the person that their daughter had brought home. Austin simply watched him with a child's curiosity, as though he was figuring out who this person was.
When they were done Austin hopped out of his chair and ran to his mother's side,"Can we go down to the water?"
"Sure, sweetie", Ronnie said,"Would you mind of Emmet came too?"
"I guess", he shrugged his small shoulders.
"You can show him grandpa's boat and how to find shells."
"Okay", he agreed with a nod.
"Mom, do you mind if we go down? I don't want you to be left with clean up."
"Oh no!", Edith smiled,"You all go on and have fun, I'll get your dad to help."
"It was delicious, Edith", Emmet said sliding away from the table.
"Did you have enough?"
"Plenty", he laughed patting his stomach.
Emmet, Ronnie, and Austin followed the brick path from the back of the house down to the water front. The late afternoon sun washed over the water in golden tones with hues orange and pink. The current moved like sparkling gems beneath the surface as the breeze moved the blades of grass and reeds on the shore.
Emmet hung back and watched Ronnie with her son. The easy way they had with each other, laughing, and talking as if they hadn't spent any time apart. He felt like a stranger who was intruding on a private seen and yet there was a warmth that coursed through him. He was used to Ronnie being a constant on the go person who never seemed to stop and here he was able to watch her interact with her child as he found shells and told her what he had been up to since their last visit.
"What are you doing back there, Ireland?", Ronnie stood up brushing sandy hands on her jeans.
"Watching you", he smiled,"You're very natural with him."
"Well, thank you", she tucked her arm into his,"He's my life."
"I can tell", he kissed her temple.
"Emmet, want to go see the boat?", Austin called as he waded in the water.
"Absolutely!", he said walking down to the shore.

Down town Wilmington was bustling in the evening twilight. People out to dinner or out for a stroll. The trees along the sidewalk were beginning to come to life with white strands of lights. Their branches and leaves casting odd shaped shadows.
Emmet, Ronnie, and Austin ducked into an ice cream shop who's line was nearly out the door.
"Popular place", Emmet observed.
"Best in town", she said,"You haven't lived until you've had one of their waffle cones."
"That good?", he laughed.
"It's awesome!", Austin chimed in,"Can I get the chocolate cone, mom?"
"All you need is more sugar", she laughed ruffling his hair,"But since it's the weekend, yes."
"You'll have to tell me what to get, kiddo", Emmet looked at the little boy,"We don't have this place back home."
"Okay", he nodded,"The cone with the chocolate around it with chocolate ice cream is the best."
"Chocolate and chocolate, sounds perfect", he held out his hand for a high five and laughed as Austin jumped to slap his hand,"Good shot!", he said shaking his hand in mock pain causing the five year old to laugh.
They ordered their cones and took them outside to walk along the illuminated docks. The moon cast it's fingers over the silken surface of the water. It looked as though tiny, silver faeiries danced along the current. Austin darted back and forth from the two adults to just a few feet ahead of them.
"How come you've never mentioned all of this?", Emmet asked wiping his mouth with a napkin.
"All of what?", Ronnie looked at him.
"Your house, your parents; you obviously come from another world than I thought."
"I didn't think it would matter in the grand scheme of things", she kept an eye on the bouncing child ahead of them.
"It doesn't, I guess", he replied,"I just didn't know I would be walking into a place with people like your parents and with their degrees and a house with a pool."
"Does it bother you?", she looked at him.
He shrugged,"I don't know......I've just never been good at the whole people with more thing. I guess because I didn't come from a whole lot."
"That doesn't matter to me", she took his hand,"I like who you are and where ever it is that you come from. It made you who you are."
It did make him who he was and he didn't want to be bothered by where and what she came from. But she came from another world, one which he had never been a part of and knew he wouldn't be a part of. He felt as if it were only a matter of time before she came to that realization.
He looked up and flashed a smile as she gave his hand a squeeze. She was so beautiful in the moonlight with glittering eyes and the spring breeze tossing her hair about. He pulled her close as Austin ran back towards them babbling about the dog he had seen up ahead. He was a talker just like she was.

Emmet awoke with a start as he heard voices outside the bedroom door. He sighed laying back against the over sized pillows. He had never felt more out of place than he did in the last twenty four hours. He was fine with Ronnie and Austin, but her parents with their large home and lush lives, it just wasn't him. But he was here for Ronnie, not for them.
He crawled out of bed and went for a shower, hoping it would clear the thoughts from his over crowded mind. He dressed and brushed his teeth and began straightening the bed. He did have manners after all,"Come in", he said as he heard a knock.
"Morning", Ronnie said brightly,"Sleep okay?"
"Yeah" he replied,"I like this bed compared to the one back home."
"My parents are known for this type of thing", she laughed,"My mom invited some people over for a brunch. Some friends of hers and some of my old friends as well."
"More questions and weird looks, got it", he said it a bit more harshly than he meant too.
"Come on, Ireland. Don't be like that", she said crossing the room to him,"I didn't know she had done this."
"I just don't want to be paraded around like a specimen. That's not why I came here."
"I know", she said with a nod,"It will just be for a few hours."
"Just a few hours?", he said wrapping an arm around her waist.
"Promise", she said bringing her lips to his.
"Or we could stay here a few hours", he teased.
"Nice try", she murmered against his lips,"Come on, let's go down stairs."
"I am hungry", he said patting his stomach.
