"That was easier than I thought", Emmet said as they exited the theatre back onto the busy street.
"I have never been given an answer that quickly!", Ronnie laughed excitedly,"I think I'm still in shock."
"You and me both!", he grinned,"We should celebrate."
"I can't", she said adjusting her bag,"I have to work and I have some errands to run."
"I have the day off, I could help with the errands",he offered.
"It's okay", she shrugged,"I'll call you later", she kissed his cheek.
Emmet kept her hand in his for a moment,"Something's off with you, I don't mean it in a bad way. But you're not you."
"I'm fine, honest", she gave him a smile,"Just busy, that's all."
He sighed,"If you say so."
"I do say so, Ireland, so stop worrying about me. Like I said, I will call you later. Plus you should go call your family back home and tell them about your big break."
"See ya later", he said as he began the walk back to the subway station. He knew something was up with Ronnie, normally he couldn't shut her up and today, aside from their reading she had barely said anything. This wasn't the woman he was used too. He pushed the thoughts aside and descended the stairs to the train station. He went back to his apartment and phoned his family in Ireland. He laughed as he heard the cheering in the background and was struck with a pang of longing. He missed home, it had been over a year since he had last seen the rolling green hills, stood on the cliffs over looking the North Atlantic. Too long since he had sat in a noisy pub on a Friday night, listening to local muscians and to people tell stories around the turf fires that burned on cold nights. He was making a life for himself and doing what he had to, too get by. But a large part of his heart was still home in Ireland.

Manhattan was noisy and full of people. Tourists and native New Yorkers alike, people stopping to take photos, yelling for cabs and cursing the cold, whipping wind. Emmet didn't mind it, in some ways it reminded of him of Dublin, especially in the summer time. He had decided some time away from his flat would be good, there was no sense in sitting home and pining away. Not when he could out and about in the city, the city which surpisingly he hadn't seen much of due to work and auditions. It was always get from point a to point b and not get lost. He strolled through and looked up at the towering buildings, stopped to get a cup of coffee and a pretzel. He was munching on his pretzel when he spotted Ronnie across the street looking into a window. He was about to shout out to her when he spotted the small child with her. A little boy who looked to be about five or six years old, then two older people joined her. He looked with confusion as what appeared to be a family began talking and laughing as the little boy held his arms out to be lifted. Emmet watched as they disappeared around the corner, was this the reason she had seemed off? Who was the child?

Emmet's head swam as he rode the train back to Brooklyn. Was the little boy Ronnie's son? Who was the older couple? Why wouldn't she have talked about any of it with him? He thought it irresponsible in a sense, to leave a child with someone else while she was in New York. She was chasing a dream, a pipe dream some would say. He knew that he was getting ahead of himself and that it was unfair to make an assumption. But he knew that she had hesitated in getting closer to him and that she barely spoke of her family. He only knew that they lived in North Carolina. He climbed the stairs to his apartment and tossed his bag onto the couch. He warmed up some left over chinese and settled in for a movie, he had to get his mind to stop spinning.
***************************************************
Emmet was awakened with a knock on the door,"Coming!", he called stumbling over his shoes,"Ronnie", he said surprised.
"Hey there!", she smiled breezing past him,"You were sleeping?"
"Yeah", he said raking a hand through his mussed hair,"What's up?"
"Don't know", she smiled pulling a beer from the refrigerator,"It's still early so thought I would pop by for a visit."
"Thought you had to work."
"I wasn't needed", she grinned,"Any plans for the night?"
"Not really", he shrugged,"Can I ask you something?", he sat on the arm of the couch.
"Sure!"
He thought carefully before proceeding,"I was in Manhattan earlier, I had just wanted to get out and wander around. I saw you."
"You saw me?", she said suddenly interested in her finger nails.
"I did", he said with a nod,"With the little boy and an older couple. Who are they?"
"Emmet, you wouldn't understand", she began pacing the small space.
"Try me", he said softly,"I care about you Ronnie and I am just trying to figure you out."
"I'm twenty two, that means I was barely seventeen when I had Austin."
"So he is yours", he looked at her.
"Yes, he's my son and you are probably wondering why I am here and he's there."
"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't"
She nodded and continued,"He lives with my parents because I am trying to make a life for he and I. I have yet to get the break I need, with the money I need to support him."
"Is he why you don't want to get close to me?"
"Yes", she said as tears unexpectedly burned her eyes,"You are so amazing and wonderful and every time I'm with you, it's like nothing else matters. But then I remember that I have a child, a wonderful, beautiful, phenomenal child and............... and I can't let myself feel for you."

"Why didn't you tell me?", he asked as she leaned against the counter, keeping her eyes averted.
"How do I start that conversation?", she laughed with a shrug,"Hey, nice to meet you, by the way I have a child who lives with my parents."
"Would have been nice to know."
She shook her head,"And what would you have done with the information? Judged me just like everyone else? Backed away from me? Or better yet, look at me the way you are right now," she pulled her purse over her arm and kept a hand on the door," I made a decision when I was young and stupid. I thought I was in love. But out of that decision came my baby boy and I will not apologize for that."
"I wasn't saying you had too. What I was trying to say is that you should have been honest with me! All this time you have kept at a distance and everything has been by your rules, I have respected that. But you could have been honest."
"No", she said softly,"I couldn't because this is the result. You are just like everyone else."
"That's an unfair assumption, you want me to be like everyone else so you can have it your way."
"Because it's safer that way! I don't get hurt, my son doesn't get exposed to someone who will just run away in the end!"
"Seems like you're the one running", he said nodding towards her bag.
"I'm done here", she said turning the door handle.
"Guess I am too", he said as the door slammed behind her. He picked up a bottle throwing it against the wall, listening as the glass shattered and sprinkled across the floor. She was angry at him? What had he done, aside from caring for her? He had played everything her way and taken things at her pace only to be lied too. The thought of having to see her and work with her burned his mind like a red hot poker.
