"That was very pretty Lauren." Sharon smiled. "Thank you for singing for me."
"You are very welcome Sharon, and thank you for letting me sing." Lauren replied, standing and curtsying.
"Lauren," Keith started talking. "I just talked to Sharon, and well, um-"
"What Keith is trying to say," Sharon interrupted, "is would you be interested in traveling with us on our first tour in the US?"
Lauren smiled. "I would love to, but I'm not sure if the Thompsons would let me, even though they don't pay much attention to me."
She had been right, the Thompsons hadn't allowed her to go with Keith and the lads.
They had stated that it was bad for little girls to travel without their guardians, and that she couldn't miss any school.
She would have easily been able to miss school however, as she was a very bright child and had skipped the second, third and fourth grades to be in the fifth, and was at the top of the class.
When the lads came back from the US, they told her funny stories of what they'd done, and the crazy people they'd met.
They showed her pictures, and Keith brought her a teddy bear with a little surfboard from California.
Two months after the lads and Sharon came back, the Thompsons told Lauren that they no longer wanted to take care of her, and that the adoption agency had already found another family to take her.
The family lived in Texas, the father was a banker, the mother an artist, and their twin teenage sons were on the honor role at school.
They were giving her two days to pack and say goodbye to her few friends, before people from the agency came to get her.
She had immediately run off to find Keith, who, as usual on his breaks, was at his favorite bit of beach. A place that before Keith showed it to her, only a few surfers, mostly Keith's friends, knew of.
"Hey Lauren! How's our favorite wee lass?" Some of his friends called out when she reached the beach, slightly out of breath.
"I'm fine. Thanks for asking, Brian, Aiden, Brenden and Aslin. How are you? Where's Keith?" She called back.
"We're good!" Aiden said just as Aslin jumped in with "Keith's out on the water, he should be riding in on this next wave."
"Thanks! I need to tell all of you somethin' when he comes in, though."
Just as she answered, Keith rode the wave in, shouting "Yeeeoooooowwwwww!!!!!" Running up the beach, he smiled when he saw Lauren.
"How are ya sis?" He asked.
"I'm fine Keith. Well, sorta, anyway."
"What's wrong?" He looked very concerned.
"I'm moving." She said, her voice trembling. "To Texas. The Thompsons don't want me anymore, and I have two days to pack an' say goodbye to you and the rest of the lads." As she said the last bit, she started crying. "I'm not sure why I'm surprised, I mean, I knew I wouldn't be here long, and I usually make sure I don't get too attached to people, or places, but Ireland is different! The people are nice, they have manners and everything is beautiful!"
